Our series of articles focussing on key targets from the promoted clubs continues with a look at one of West Ham’s defensive assets. Hammers centre-half James Tomkins missed a single league game last term and was one of only two players from Sam Allardyce’s side to feature in the npower Championship team of the season, along with midfielder Mark Noble:

The Statistics

A product of the Hammers’ youth academy, Tomkins signed for the club at the age of seven and has worked his way up through the ranks. The centre-half made his debut in the 2007-08 campaign after a spate of injuries handed him a chance and went on to win the Young Hammer of the Year award after making six first-team appearances. Aside from a brief five-week loan spell at Derby the following season, Tomkins has been a one-club man.

The centre-half has struggled with injuries and failed to gain the trust of certain managers over his time at Upton Park; prior to Sam Allardyce’s arrival last summer, he had made just 60 league appearances in his first four seasons at the club. Installed alongside Winston Reid at the heart of the Hammers backline, Tomkins – who occasionally featured in a defensive midfield role under the former Bolton boss – was a stand-out performer as Big Sam guided the club back into the Premier League at the first attempt, returning four goals and a couple of assists. In total, he has played 104 league matches, scoring six times and providing three assists, and has represented England at youth level from Under 16 – Under 21.

The Prospects

Costing 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 4.1 in the Sky Sports game, Tomkins is pricier than his fellow Hammers defenders in the latter game, with Reid matching his valuation in FPL. His guaranteed game time, however, has helped him pick up plenty of suitors and he is, resultantly, the most popular West Ham defender in both games, despite cheaper alternatives in Allardyce’s backline.

While many Fantasy managers are eyeing up the Hammers defence as we look for cut-price rotation options, it’s worth bearing in mind that Allardyce’s side were statistically more impressive away from home in the 2011/12 campaign. Not only did West Ham win more games on the road (13 to 11), they picked up 10 away clean sheets compared to just seven at home and also conceded less goals on their travels (22 v 26). A repeat pattern could well prove frustrating for Fantasy managers looking to mainly utilise their Hammers defensive assets at home, perhaps suggesting Jussi Jaaskelainen may be more reliable in FPL due to save points, though Tomkins’ ability to register blocks could prove essential in boosting his EA SPORTS Player Performance Index score and help him pick up bonus.

Tomkins’ involvement with the Great Britain Olympic squad has many worrying over his game time at the start of the season but even if Stuart Pearce’s team reach the final on Saturday August 11, it still gives the defender a full week before the Hammers get their season underway at home to Aston Villa – considering how integral Tomkins was to the team’s defensive performances last term, it seems unlikely this will affect Allardyce’s selection policy.

With (FUL, SUN, SOT) all set to visit Upton Park by the end of Gameweek 8 and trips to Swansea, Norwich and QPR also on the agenda, the Hammers are picking up plenty investment due to what is clearly one of the kindest opening schedules around. If Allardyce can engineer a quick start out the blocks, Tomkins has the potential to immediately flourish and establish himself as one of the best value defenders on offer to Fantasy managers for the season ahead.

I'd be really interested to know at what stage people usually play their wildcard each year? I usually play mine at the first internatinoal break so I can get the first set of price rises.

Didn't do it last year as tried to make do with the GW2 debacle/free transfer but I'm still thinking GW3 would get me the price rises to set me up for the marathon over the following 35 gameweeks?

I like this. All 2m people are involved as opposed to say December or Feb when the active numbers have dropped and you can get the bigger rises like Silva (which I missed last year).

Lets you have the money to play with for the second half of the season?

Joking aside, I'm going to try to hold on for as long as I can, unless my first draft turns out to be a disaster.

gw3 rises are a tempting reason to go early.. but I might allow myself a couple of hits instead, if things are going well.

Choosing 1 out of Aguero and Tevez is troubling me :'(

Tevez is obv. 2.5million cheaper and would allow vast impovement in the rest of the team. Problem is he isnt as nailed as Aguero (although Tevez situation may be more clear with the community shield etc) and even if he does become a regular I feel Aguero will score more. Aguero tends to stay high up pitch around the box whereas Tevez drops back and gets more involved

I've had Aguero in my team since the start but I'm growing slowly more tempted by the prospect of getting Tevez. While he won't score quite as much I think he'll get more assists and I think baps will be pretty close between them both also. Also I could really do with that extra bit of money.

Where exactly does this 'not as nailed on as Aguero' thing come from?

Maybe he isn't - we'll see - but I think Tevez is the real magic up front.

Guess its not fact but its the general consensus here and also my personal opinion. Aguero was a beast last year and the main man for goals, surely he is no1? although Tevez wasnt present for basically all of last season.

Tbh though I can see them both playing regularly, but Tevez more liable to be rotated with Balotelli.

I'm starting to think I might not bother with a City striker and get Adebayor (if at Spurs) or Cisse instead. Speaking of Cisse, why is he not in anyone's team? Ok, we don't know how Europa will affect Newcastle but their best players should be rested, at least in the early games. Cisse's first 12 are TOT, che, AVL, eve, NOR, rdg, MUN, sun, WBA, liv, WBA, SWA. They really don't look bad to me. The first two aren't ideal but I don't see Spurs keeping a cleanie in that one and Cisse scored a brace at Stamford Bridge last time.

For those thinking of wildcarding after GW3 like I usually do I'm v tempted by 3 Chelsea and at least 2 Man City - I had three until the news about City looking at another defender gathered pace (so Lescott is currently out whilst I play with other rotating defenders). City have SOT and QPR in first three - alot of price rises and a lot of points to be had.

Mata because he's proven class in the Premiership, I'd expect him to be even better in his second season.

I have doubts over Hazard, he wasn't amazingly consistent in Ligue 1 let alone the Premiership. I've also trusted him less since he said Gervinho was the best player he's ever played with 😐

If Tevez pays the Charity Shield game who is gonna choose him over Aguero? I think I might take the chance and as a backup put either Nasri/Yaya in too. Frees up soo much cash to field a really good team.

He is already firmly in my team, in anticipation of starting the charity shield. Can't see him not playing. And even if he doesn't, I'd still be tempted. He will definitely come on at some point worst case and it doesn't necessarily mean he won't start their first league fixture.

The added value to the rest of my team is worth it.

Assuming you're doing Torres -> Rooney in GW2 , personally I'd like to have Bale/Siggy/VDV over Valencia as spurs coverage is essential from GW2 . Stadard team otherwise .

I don't know what people see in Hughes or other Fulham defenders. IMO they won't keep many cs this season. Also Wilson has bad fixtures. I would rather get Demel and Saylor than Hughes and Wilson.

    Hows this looking?

    Foster
    Ivanovic / Hangeland / Ridgewell
    Mata / Dempsey / Valencia / Noble
    Tevez / Bent / Jelavic

    Mignolet / Maloney / Demel / Cuellar

1.0 in the bank incase Tevez doesn't look like playing as much as I think and then I can trade Mata/Tevez to Silva/Adebayor. Otherwise Mata will swap straight to Bale.

I have double rotation with Foster/Mignolet & Rodwell/Cuellar which maybe slightly risky but I fancy it to do well.

Noble & Maloney also rotate well.

Not mega happy TBH but I have a feeling he wont go as nuts as many think and it enables me to have alot more balance.

Tevez if playing / Mata / Dempsey & Valencia are all decent captaincy options that I would be happy with. Infact looking at it I could just start with Silva/Ade and would have less risk of rotation than with Tevez.

I've gone for the safe option of selecting quite a few Premier League veterans that have proven their ability in the top flight for many years.

Let me know what you think.

    Friedel

    Cole A / Lescott / Hangeland

    Lampard / Bale / Larson / Noble

    Rooney / Tevez / Petric

    Bank: £2.5m

There's uncertainty over Lampard's role in the starting 11 - that said I've got him in my team on the basis Chelsea need some old heads in the 11 and Lampard should still be on pens, some FKs and some corners.
