Where have all the clean sheets gone?

That’s what Ederson‘s (£5.4m) owners will have been asking themselves recently, with only two arriving in the last 13 league matches.

Having averaged 19.5 shut-outs over the previous four seasons, Pep Guardiola’s side currently has just eight of those in 2022/23 – and there are only 13 games left of the campaign.

So are there reasons for this, or is it just bad luck?

Let’s delve deeper into this issue.

THE DATA

Using Premium Members Area statistics, we can compare this season to the last few, as well as break 2022/23 down into pre- and post-World Cup.

In several areas, only the 2019/20 campaign stands out as being worse. Yet despite their internal standards slipping, Man City still rank as the league’s best (per game) in all of the above categories.

Studying data since the winter restart, their per-match numbers have deteriorated only slightly from 0.81 to 0.91 for expected goals conceded (xGC) and from 7.29 to 8.27 for shots conceded.

But interestingly, their recent rate of conceding shots on target (1.82) is better than ever before.

ISSUES WITH EDERSON

Does anyone have a clue about Toney and when his suspension is about to start?

No but if it’s gonna be one of those where it’s a 6 month ban for example they’ll want it done asap so they can potentially sell him or have him for near the start of next season I’d imagine

Lots of changes yet to come I’m sure but here is what I’m looking like atm:

        Raya // Ward
James Gabriel Zinchenko // Mee Trippier
Saka Maddison Rashford Mitoma // Mac Allister
        Haaland Kane Toney

If Toney ban looks imminent then I’d do:
Ward Zinchenko Max Allister Toney > DDG Estupinan Odegaard Mbuemo

Idk about you but my team looks stinky this week, WC makes it looks amazing for a while for the 2 doubles coming up and covers the blanks and then can FH in one of the later doubles.

I always play my WC early too so any excuse I guess

        I guess so,

This is my team this week, and pretty happy with it, I held Mitoma through the blank.

        Kepa
        White, Mee, Tarky
        Rashford, Salah, Mitoma, Saka (C)
        Haaland, Kane, Nketiah

Without WC it would be this:

          Raya
          Trippier White Tark Bueno
          Saka Odegaard Maddison
          Gnonto

It’s not great it’s basically a 6 man team when you consider 3 of them are Tark Bueno and gnonto

I have done a fair bit of analysis on this and the reason they're not keeping clean sheets is because the teams they have played keep scoring.
I think they may well keep clean sheets in the future if the teams they play then don't score.

Anyone else will play WC instead this week? Have actually good team for this week and activate WC next week.

Players I have now but won't have if WC active now:
    Tarkowski v Nfo
    Kepa v Leeds
    Kane v Wol

Only issue is Darwin and Robertson against Mun what I don't like. Have 1 FT so could transfer one of them out as one week punt. Oh yes and Mahrez, not sure would he start or not.

    1. Eleven Hag
      • 8 Years

      - NFO have scored in every home game so you are looking at 2 pts from Tark

    Food for thought !!

Can navigate upcoming blanks and dgw´s on a mere -8 hit.

GW 27 -» 3 DGW (Dunk, Mee, Toney)
    GW 28 -» Can field 11
GW 29 -» 12 DGW -» Can even use BB on Ward* Halland Saka Odeggard :

    Kepa* Ward*
    Trippier* Mee* Dunk* James* Shaw*
    Rashford* Maddison* Barnes* Saka Odegaard
    Watkins* Toney* Halland

Is it worth saving chips for later? Thoughts are considered. 🙂

Well I can't sell Rash, Shaw or Haaland. I could sell Andreas, Mitro, Salah, KdB and Leno. Bueno might not even play, so even if I use 3 FT's plus take my first hit I still might not get XI out as I will have XI with Bueno for -4 but will have a train wreck of a team for DGW29 and only one FT to deal with it.

Looks like I'm FH'ing! Think I'll roll this week and decide next. Could use 2 FT's next week to build for DGW29, then FH BGW28 and have a decent team of doublers all ready.

When you dont stick with same defense for even two consecutive games, how can you expect a consistent and stable performance. Having rotation in defense is different from rotation in attack. Last time Pep has used same defense in 2 consecutive games was vs Everton and Leeds, thats 10 games of continuous rotation.

    vs BOU: Ake-Dias-Akanji-Lewis
    vs NFO: Laporte-Dias-Walker
    vs ARS: Ake-Dias-Walker
    vs AVL: Laporte-Dias-Walker
    vs TOT: Lewis-Ake-Akanji-Walker
    vs WOL: Laporte-Ake-Akanji-Lewis
    vs TOT: Ake-Akanji-Stones-Lewis
    vs MNU: Cancelo-Ake-Akanji-Walker
    vs CHE: Ake-Stones-Walker
    vs EVE: Ake-Akanji-Stones-Lewis
vs LEE: Same as Everton game

But the defence has still conceded the lowest xGC. They're not conceding many big chances. So is the defence really to blame?

Ederson is not saving shots that he should. The defence are doing their job, Ederson isn't. Can't blame rotation for that.

      1. Holmes
        • 12 Years
        2 years, 9 months ago

Communication might be an issue. Lets see last 5 goals they have conceded.

        vs BOU: https://youtu.be/Gs6sn4K2q9U?t=404
        vs NFO: https://youtu.be/o3auJDyJk3s?t=100
        vs ARS: https://youtu.be/InSyB5cxttc?t=229
        vs AVL: https://youtu.be/GEhC-lVPouk?t=392
        vs TOT: https://youtu.be/9PSFewEohn8?t=9

Other than conceding penalty vs Arsenal, I'm not sure what Ederson could have done differently for other goals.

      2. Holmes
        • 12 Years
        2 years, 9 months ago

Just my opinion obviously, Pep knows better. Ederson might be playing poor but I dont think we can entirely blame him for not keeping CSs. It could also be possible that they are just unlucky with opponent's goalscorer being present in right position at right time.

IMO rotation in defense cant generate CSs consistently.

It's clear Pep picks defenders based on opponents. If he wants buildup from the back, he picks Laporte, if he wants a better defensive option then goes with Ake. Injuries have also played a part in the rotation

Most I've seen are going Haaland, Watkins, Toney and leaving money ITB to buy Bruno in gw29 as you say.

It's a difficult one because Kane has good fixtures, but I think the blanks and doubles make him dispensable.

Brighton have better xGC than Brentford in the last 6 but not much in it.

The way things are going, it looks like 3x Chips used in consecutive weeks:

    GW 28 - FH
    GW 29 - BB
    GW 30 - WC

    What are other people’s strategies?

    1. Ask Yourself
      • 9 Years
      2 years, 9 months ago

      WC now
      BB29
FH later down the line. Either one of the doubles or even GW38 in case it’s one of those where a few teams have nothing to play for

I don’t want to get caught out by the “end of season / lack of team effort” scenario

          • 5 Years

Using the FH is a decent way to avoid this. Look at which teams double and which teams have favourable fixtures and have something to play for. If say the title or top 2/3 are wrapped up by GW35/36 then we'll likely see a lot of rotation so the notion of nailed players with these teams goes out the window

    2. Nate(U)dog(ie)
      • 5 Years
      2 years, 9 months ago

      GW29 - BB
      GW30/34 - WC
      GW37 - FH

Still unsure on TC, FH may change if needed.

    3. Piggs Boson

      Currently thinking WC27, FH28, BB29

My bench boosts don't usually have huge money on the bench, so shouldn't have cleanup to do after.

As long as the money is on good value players, it doesn't matter if it's in the XI or the bench during a BB. And a 4.5m mid/def getting 4-5pts is good value.

Piling money into the bench doesn't nessessarily increase your BB points, because you're taking it out of the XI.

    4. Probably FH29, WC 33, BB 34 but not 100% set on anything yet. May need to decide in the next couple of days.

      1. Hy liverpool

I've played my WC already so looking at
      32- FH
      37 - BB

If I still had WC, I would be looking at something like the exact same thing above but
      29- WC

Starting to shift away from BB in week 29 and FH in 28 seems like a waste to me.

Interesting... don't you think it'll be difficult to prepare a BB that nails 15 starters with beachiness kicking in by GW37?

          • 5 Years

Not really a fan of the beach theory: tends to be just one or two teams in the middle of the pack who I would likely avoid anyway. And I like the look of the gw37 fixtures even before any others get added.

£2.2m per Premier League place, so owners won't be happy if managers of mid-table teams play their kids and drop 3-4 places in the last couple of weeks.

Haha not sure that's true - but I played WC in week 23 so am embracing the slightly more differential strats this year.

Might still BB in 29; cup draw tonight will dictate whether FH is worth saving for week 32.

As things currently stand, I should be able to navigate the next 4 GW's with no chips and just two hits, whilst fielding a pretty strong team each GW.

specifically: 3 dgw players in 27, a full 11 players in 28 and 10 dgw players in 29.

Afterwards, I'll most likely FH in 32 and WC ahead of a BB in 34 if that's the next big DGW.

    Sanchez, Ward
    Trippier, Gabriel, Estupinan, Kristensen, Mee
    Rashford, Saka, Ødegaard, Maddison, Mitoma
    Haaland, Kane, Toney

    Transfer down the line:
    GW28: Kane to Watkins
GW29: Saka/Ødegaard and Gabriel to Salah/Bruno and Shaw

    BENCH: Ward Gnonto Bueno Thomas

Genuinely think I’ve nailed the WC. Gets me 5 doublers in 27, 11 playing in 28 and 12 doublers to go along with Haaland, Saka and Gabriel on a BB29 only using FTs.

    Save in 27, Kane + Estupinan > Watkins + Schär in 28.
    Odegaard > Bruno in 29.

    No Toney ban version:

    Raya // WARD
James Gabriel Estupinan // PINNOCK Trippier
Saka Odegaard Rashford Maddison // MARCH
    Haaland Kane TONEY

    Toney ban version:

    Raya // DE GEA
James Gabriel Estupinan // MEE Trippier
    Saka Odegaard Rashford Maddison MITOMA
    Haaland Kane // MBUEMO

I have a very similar plan/team. I'm moving Kane and Davies --> Watkins and double DEF in 28 to give me BB29 team:

      Ward*. Sanchez*.

      Saliba. Mee*. Trippier*. ??*. Shaw*.

      Saka. Maddison*. March*. MacAllister*. Rashford*.

      Mbuemo*. Haaland. Watkins*.

Depending on Estupinan and (to a lesser extent) March injury news, Sanchez, Mee, & March could be Raya, Estupinan, & Mitoma.

Looks great. Starting with Watkins would give you a little more leeway for IB issues, but Kane v NFO is probably worth booking the transfer. Would prefer Estupinan over Mee/Pinnock in 29 (and as a hold for future BHA doubles) but with the extra game in 28 your version probably nets more points in 28-9 alone.

How is this for a plan? Saves FH for both BGW 28 and 32. Copy freely if you like it

    WC27 with the following team:

    GK: Sanchez, Ward
DEF: Mee, Henry, Shaw, Trippier, Mings
MID: Mitoma, Maddison, Almiron, Rashford, Saka
    ATK: Mbeumo, Haaland, Watkins

8.7mil itb for basically any wished upgrade possible

    5 doublers in GW27

    GW28 - Mitoma>Odegaard and field 11 players
    DGW29 - Odegaard>Mitoma and play Bench Boost (13 doublers + Haaland&Saka)
BGW32 - should already have 9 players couple of weeks before and free transfers to field full 11
    DGW34 or 37 - Free Hit
