It’s time for our semi-regular look at which Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players are on penalties, corner-kicks and free-kicks for their respective clubs.

Our soon-to-be-refreshed Set-Piece Takers tab rounds up our estimated pecking order but these shorter-term recaps look at what’s happened in the Gameweeks just gone.

Our last such article came out at the turn of March, so here we focus on Gameweeks 26-30.

KEY OBSERVATIONS AND NOTEWORTHY CHANGES

  • Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) scored a penalty in Gameweek 29 with Bukayo Saka (£8.6m) off the pitch but Gabriel Martinelli (£6.7m) on it. Saka had taken Arsenal’s only two previous penalties this season.
  • Julian Alvarez (£6.0m) scored a penalty in Gameweek 30 with Erling Haaland (£12.2m) and Riyad Mahrez (£7.3m) off the pitch but Kevin De Bruyne (£12.1m) on it. Mahrez previously scored a penalty with Haaland on the field in Gameweek 23 but Pep Guardiola said after the game that the Norwegian striker is “normally… the first taker”.
  • Frank Lampard’s first match back as Chelsea caretaker in Gameweek 30 saw Reece James (£5.8m) take all eight of the Blues’ corners and their only indirect free-kick. James hadn’t previously taken a corner since Gameweek 1. Ben Chilwell (£6.0m), prominent at set plays under Graham Potter, only played the last 22 minutes of Saturday’s defeat to Wolves, however.
  • Michael Olise (£5.4m) has taken all 14 of Crystal Palace’s corners and two of their three crossed indirect free-kicks since Roy Hodgson was re-appointed Palace boss ahead of Gameweek 29. There was more of a job share with Eberechi Eze (£5.4m) under the previous regime but Olise has the upper hand for now.
  • Bruno Fernandes (£9.6m) has featured a lot more at set plays over the last couple of months, firstly thanks to the medium-term injury sustained by Christian Eriksen (£6.2m) and then the more recent issue picked up by Luke Shaw (£5.1m). Eriksen is now fit again, however, returning as a substitute in Gameweek 30.
  • Brennan Johnson (£5.7m) had taken all of Nottingham Forest’s penalties in 2022/23 up until Gameweek 27, when Andre Ayew (£5.0m) deputised – and missed – in Johnson’s absence.
  • Alexander Isak (£6.7m) has scored two penalties for Newcastle United in the current campaign, in Gameweeks 8 and 28 – but hitherto first choice Callum Wilson (£6.9m) was off the pitch in both instances and we’ve yet to see Newcastle win a spot-kick when both players were on the field.
  • Mohamed Salah‘s (£12.8m) status as Liverpool’s first-choice penalty taker could be under threat after he missed his second spot-kick in four matches. After the latest miss in Gameweek 30, Jurgen Klopp said:

“That’s something we will talk about but not here.” – Jurgen Klopp on Mohamed Salah remaining on penalties

With 2 FTs are Rashford and Maddison to Grealish and Martinelli a no brainer this week?

    Raya
    Trippier Chilwell Moreno
    Rash Maddison Mitoma Bruno
    Kane Haaland Watkins
    Kepa March Botman Estupian

Thinking same but will Grealish start? As Maddison or any replacement probably a hold for Salah in 33/34 I might just go for a one week punt on Mahrez or Olise

  3. Rashford out for "a few games"

Can’t do that move for free. If I go Grealish, then I’ll want Rashford in for Saka in 34. So no midfield slots left for Salah. Also don’t wanna take hits at this stage of the season for players I won’t captain.

That's just silly. It's his groin. They take more than 2 weeks even if only a small tear

Difficult to say. Look at what happened with Haaland and his groin injury. Depends on how many full training sessions he gets in before a game.

          “unavailable for a few games”

Man Utd have 4 games to play (1 PL, 2 EL, 1 FAC) between now and the GW33 match vs Spurs.

He only needs a few mins to score as we have seen previously.

Hmmm wording is a bit too vague for me, will wait to see if ETH elaborates. Could be small, could be bigger. "Expected to" make the run-in is far from definitive from a timeline point of view as well as from a wording that instils confidence that they're that sure on it

Morning guys, with Rash out for a few games, should I get rid of him as a priority? (FH left, 1FT 0.6 ITB).. plan was initially Maddison to Grealish.. also have a shaw shaped issue in my team but can get away with that this GW...

Stupidly, used my FT to shift Madders in a bit of a rage transfer post gameweek and now faced with both Rash and Shaw flagged, have 2m in the bank and anything would be for a -4, what would be my best moves here?

    Raya
    Trippier - Botman - Zinchenko
    Grealish - Saka - Mitoma - MacAllister
    Haaland - Watkins - Kane

    Kepa - Chilwell - Rash - Shaw

There's technically no immediate rush on transferring them out. You have a good team for this week.

Are palace a bit of a trap? All but one of their remaining fixtures are a green on the fdr ticker, and they play in bgw32. Olise seems the obvious choice, on form and selected by less than 1%.

So is maddison and rashford --> Grealish and Olise worth a -4?

I'm well prepped for 32 and might look to shift kane to isak etc soon to then upgrade a midfielder to salah for the double if liverpool form picks up a bit...

    1. The Mentaculus
      • 4 Years
      2 years, 7 months ago

Olise is a fine enabler, but I'm still slightly skeptical whether they can maintain this radical shift in attacking form, and they do use up a valuable midfield spot for DGW34.

    2. Andy_Social
      • 13 Years

They look the part, but my major doubt is that Leeds were so spectacularly awful in that 2nd half, that I can't infer much about Palace. I'll observe GW31 with a view to bringing in 1 or 2 on my FH GW32.
Regarding your proposal, it depends who's on your bench.

Zaha might be back GW32. Been out 3 or 4 weeks with guess what? A grade 1 Groin strain. 🙂

That will leave Zaha/Schlupp inside on the left. Eduoard is in the middle. Eze inside Olise on the right. Just like the first half against Leicester City

they havent actually said misses this game and that game and hope to be back for fixture x. a 'few games' can mean anything and i think its because its a serious enough injury and phrasing it like this gives the fans some hope. whats the run in? last 5 games? last 4? the fact its this diplomatic doesnt bode well

Right. Further to my above post, I'd be concerned he'll be half-fit for GW34, meaning plays 60 out of 180 minutes or something. I was planning to sell for Grealish with the option to bring him back for Saka (or Martinelli) GW34 if fully fit. I think I'll stick to that plan.

The source is 100% legit, it's a statement on the official club website.

There is also this phrase that gives some kind of clue as to timeframe:

"But there will also be relief about the prospect of his return for important games in the final weeks of the season."

Morning, all! Hope you had lovely long weekends.

Are people keeping their BHA assets on the bench this week or has the exodus begun? I’m currently benching March and Estu, and playing Mitoma.

3 doubles left this season, don't see why folks are selling

I know. Especially with Shaw and Rashford being injured.

I'm playing both March and Mitoma this week.

Selling makes no sense to me.

      i have 2. Macallister/Mitoma

I have no FH so i will sell Macallister in GW32 (and Haaland for Salah, and someone else.

I will have to take a -8 i thibnk GW32 and GW34 to get a full DGW team out (and Trippier)

We see how it pans out.

I will but back March as Macallister has had more luck, but none of them had much luck against Spurs.

If I save ft this week. And free hit gw32. Will I have 1 or 2 transfers for gw33?

    Thanks

Always 1, the FH cancels all extra FT's.

Selling Rashford a priority as he'll be dropping quite a bit from now until GW 33 before a lot of people can swap him out having played FH in GW32?

Dropping in value shouldn't dictate whether to keep him or not

Money doesn’t mean as much at this point in the season.

Lots will have had a benching headache solved and can leave him on the bench.

      You should feel silly.

      Chelsea CS far from likely.

    Shaw ruled out for tomorrow

Ten Hag on Luke Shaw and Alejandro Garnacho: "Both not available [tomorrow]. Definitely the injury of Garnacho is more severe, but I expect Luke Shaw back on shorter notice."

Do we know the Shaw injury is? I know said to be hamstring but the club I don’t think confirmed this anywhere.

Ten Hag on Marcus Rashford's injury: "It's a few games, that's the statement. I can't give more details because we don't know. We have to see how it develops."

Hi all. Barring midweek injuries how's this look?
    1FT & 1.3 to spend.
    Steele
    Trippier Shaw Chilwell Mings
    Salah Martinelli Saka Rashford
    Watkins Haaland Havertz
    (Raya-Mitoma-Henry-Shaw)

    A. Havertz to Jesus
    B. A + Shaw - Martinez for a -4
    C. Anything else?

I'm trying to use the player stats charts. I'm looking at players who've got assist potential and there's no Olise and there is Gareth Bale. I have it set to this season even though it automatically goes to the 2020 season, so I'm identifying all the bugs as best I can. But how am I supposed to use this? Every time I move from assist to goal threat it resets to 2020 season. Is this normal?

      Hi Mr Horse,

I'm not able to replicate this error. Just to check, you're in the Members Area (not beta) and in 'Player Stats' > 'Outfield Players' then switching between the 'Distribution' and 'Goal Threat' tabs?

When changing season, or any of the filter option, push the filter button and wait for the table to load with the new data. Then when you switch tabs, it should keep your recent filter settings.

Bruno likely goes back to 10 when Eriksen starts with Casemiro

Ten Hag: "I think the balance in the midfield was good with Casemiro, Eriksen and Bruno. Casemiro the balance player, the line up player, Eriksen can support him but also go to the final part of the game, can create chances with key passes."
