Our team-by-team reviews of the 2022/23 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season have now reached Brighton and Hove Albion.

In this series, we analyse each team’s attacking and defensive team stats, while also exploring which players posed the biggest goal threat and who carried the most assist potential.

Each club will also be previewed nearer to Gameweek 1 as we look more closely at new transfers, pre-season results and fans’ expectations.

BRIGHTON IN 2022/23: ATTACK

TotalRank v other clubs
Goals scored724th
Shots6131st
Shots in the box4094th
Shots on target2251st
Big chances1163rd
Expected goals (xG)74.422nd
Non-penalty expected goals (NPxG)69.692nd

Brighton were one of the Premier League’s best attacking teams in 2022/23, as they ranked among the top four clubs in all of the above metrics.

Despite a managerial change early in the season, they went from strength to strength under Roberto De Zerbi, while adopting an attractive brand of football which made them even more exciting to watch.

In past seasons, the Seagulls had developed a reputation as a team who created a lot of chances but lacked an end product. However, the arrival of De Zerbi certainly changed that, as they scored 61 goals in his 32 games, the third most in the Premier League from his appointment onwards.

It’s also worth noting that post-World Cup, they ranked as high as second for minutes per expected goal (xG), only behind champions Manchester City:

Brighton are one of only six sides to have four home fixtures in the first six Gameweeks of 2023/24, as they host Luton Town, West Ham United, Newcastle United and Bournemouth.

Averaging 5.2 minutes per shot at the Amex last term, a faster rate than any Premier League side in home encounters bar Arsenal, their attackers will be in demand when FPL launches for the new season.

They do, and great opening fixtures.
So much depends on price though.
At the back will Steele still be #1? Will there be a 4.5 defender? Will Estupinan be a reasonable 5.0m? Will Colwill be at Brighton (unlikely)? Will Ensico be (a) a FWD or STR and (B) cheap? Are they signing yet another striker??

Could be a few bargains. Steele starter at 4.5 would be good. Maybe Dunk too. Young Polish lad who was injured last year could be a handy first sub.

    Predicted price for Trippier?

    1. Sheffield Wednesday
      • 5 Years
      2 years, 5 months ago

      1. If price reveals follow last year's pattern then Newcastle won't get theirs revealed until the fourth (last) day.
      2. AVL, mci. LIV. bri opening fixtures aren't promising.

The two factors combined may mean Newcastle players are overlooked in all the excitement of early price reveals at MCI, LIV, ARS, BRE & BRI.

Imagine Trippier as almost a differential to start the season, especially if he's £7M. At £6M I think he's in everyone's squad again despite the factors above. LiveFPL predict £6.5M...

Trippier was gold until GW22 but only had a few good weeks after that, with many of us holding onto him longer than we should due to past hauls.

Might swerve at the start and see how it goes for a few weeks.

You couldn't have all of them. I just tried a Twomium draft with Haaland and Salah, and a 4.5 forward (using TeamFPL prices). Then I found for the same money I can switch Salah/Archer to Grealish/Nkunku (and TAA).
If you go for a Twomium, you will have to compensate with horrible fillers, but gambling on one premium give you (of course) lots of tasty options.

Mark let slip that he knew what big changes are coming to FPL next season on black box, but refused to say what they were.

I'm so sick of the class divide in the FPL community. People like LTFPL are able to afford a private yacht because everyone tunes into their deadline streams for the team news leaks that only the privilege few get DM'd.

We're all locked outside of the ivory tower begging for a few FPL pundits to give us a few crumbs of information ... It's not right. It's like we're living in a scissored isle with this big chasm with the rich FPL haves and the peasant FPL have nots. It reminds me of Russia. A few oligarchs get billions while the rest of us live in abject poverty.

Something isn't right in the FPL community. Everyone feels compelled to tune into certain deadline streams otherwise they will miss crucial team news that will screw their team over. This results in bigger audiences, more superchats, and more money for the coffers. All because the privileged few have information that the rest of us don't have. FPL needs to lurch to the left and distribute more power and wealth throughout the masses.

This is incorrect. Because I didn't watch every single minute of Andy's deadline stream, I lost out on a lot of points that week that Saka was benched out of the blue due to illness. You're forced to watch. Otherwise you're at a disadvantage.

You didn’t need to watch every minute to pick up that ‘news’ and it was reported as a rumour, not fact. At the time I wasn’t sure about how reliable it was was, and decided to ignore it. It was my call, and I didn’t lose any sleep about the outcome.

There was a lot about their app. I just told them to forget it because they are never getting close to the FFM Pro app.. they didn't ask much about how they could improve the game in general which suggests no changes to the actual game..... FPL has gone too far to the right. The wealthy few get the inside information and the ping-ping-ping-ping-ping-ping of superchats filling their offshore bank accounts. We need to move the community to the left and redistribute the power and wealth.

There are no Croatian colds down under! I’ve played against many a Croatian team and all were fit and healthy, though Ned Zelic took a turn after I saved his penalty. Twas a career highlight but the story is only saved for special occasions so as not to dilute the spectacular feat!

Apparently Reece James is currently in line for penalties when Havertz leaves: https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/fantasy-premier-league-set-piece-takers/

But do you think Nkunku will take them?

That reminds me, yesterday I stumbled across a YouTube by an American woman who decided to watch a British comedian she'd never heard of giving a brilliant report on a film she's never seen (Stewart Lee on Braveheart). The whole thing was her going 'Nope, don't get it'. I mean, why, WHY make a fecking video and subject Stewart Lee fans to such a celebration of ignorance????

Yeah, given his injury record and how bad Chelsea have been, I doubt I'd go for James even with pens.

Too many other good options... Shaw, Trent, Trippier, Stones, Estupinan, etc for him to be worth considering.

Unless he's priced at 4.5 of course

Yeah, that's understandable. A lot of chaos at Chelsea atm.

But chaos does bring opportunity, and Chelsea have very nice opening fixtures. Pre-season might give us more of an understanding of the risk-reward weighting with Chelsea players.

Chelsea's fixtures GW2-8 make their assets very tempting. James and Chilwell will be popular picks at 5.5m. Sure James gets injured, but you just play him and transfer him out when he breaks.

If Kepa is 5.0 I might be tempted, and I'll be keeping a close eye on Nkunku in the friendlies, providing his price is reasonable.

Agreed James will end up tempting a lot of people with his upside.
Nkunku could be popular price depending but I don’t c many other attacking FPL options to get excited about.

Keeping my eye on Sterling personally. He has a long history of goals and assists for Liverpool, City, & England. If he looks to be a key player under Poch and is priced around 8.0/8/5, I'd be tempted by a punt. Underrated player imo.

Yeah fair call, he does have a good record but I have never been a huge fan of Sterling & will prop avoid unless super cheap & looks like he’s found some real form.

At 8mill I wouldn’t be starting with him but as you say, you feel he’s underrated so it’s poss I overlook him at times.

WH away GW2 not easy, and really nice fixtures start Gw3. Which is making me think avoid from start and then make an informed choice ahead of GW3 based on who’s actually playing / playing well.

I feel like Brighton prices are Gona be crucial to building a team. What’s predictions for main players? I’ll start..

          Mitoma 7.0
          March 6.5
Pedro 7.0 (maybe a little high?)
          Ferguson 6.5
          Ensico 6.0
          Estu 5.5
          Steele 5.0
          Dunk 5.0

Maybe I’m to high across the board be interested to hear others opinions.

Estu at 5 would be in every team I feel with fixtures form and potential upside.

Agree with the sentiment and think you are spot on with the prices (hoping Estu will be 5 but probably 5.5 fair).

From GW17 last season until about gw30 I had a quite comfortable threemium. This season looks like two premiums will demand sacrifices.

            The way it should be!

Agreed but I feel FPL will price everyone cheap to keep more engaged as usual.

Threemium should not be an option to start imo and as you say everyone two premiums should demand sacrifices.

I take the point about Estupi being 5.5, but that's where I'd price the City and Arsenal defence, and I don't think he should be equal with those.

I ran a few drafts through TeamFPL as well as Livefpl which prices players much lower. A Twomium is a real stretch, esp if you want TAA too. I could only manage a reasonable balance with one premium. I think, even if the prices are as low as Livefpl's, it will be a decent challenge to rig up a squad this year.

One problem, which FPL has no control, is the opening fixtures. I think that will push too many into template squads.

Estupinan is a tough one. At 5.0 he would be massively owned but I'm not sure he should be 5.5 as that's what I expect for the likes of Chilwell, Gabriel, James, Shaw and Stones.

Interesting. Assuming Salah nailed its two out of Jota, Gakpo, Diaz, Darwin. Whichever of those is nailed is probably a good option - are you that confident?

                  Diaz Gakpo Salah

That seems the favoured front 3.

With Europa League, I think that will leave Nunez and Jota to star in.

My only worry is 2 International Breaks early on (GW4 and 8). Almost certainly you’d expect Diaz to be rested in GW5 and 9; less so Gakpo.

Doubling with Haaland and Salah leaves me with too many weak spots. haaland and Trent is doable and tempting, but given their opening fixtures, I wouldn't be averse to going without from the start. Those City and Arsenal options look too good.

I'm eyeing up Mac Allister. Think he can be a good option even without penalties if he's 6.5m and not playing deep.

If he is in the #10 role I think he will do very well. Fear he might play deeper though.

Towards the end of last season Liverpool had adopted Guardiola's box midfield with TAA alongside the CDM and the other two midfielders further forward. If Mac Allister gets one of the advanced roles a la Gundogan I like his prospects.

If Mac Allister is the same price as Trent (say, £7.5m), who would you choose?

                    Trent no question.

Can anyone predict what the much hyped changes to FPL might centre around?

          Nothing too major I hope

I've heard it's going to be pay to play. You can buy a pack of 5 free transfers for £19.99 and if you try to bring in Lucas Digne then your account gets blocked and you're put on a list of shame.

I'm assuming more mini-games - like the second chance league.

You can style the players any which way - even give them beards if need be
