Am I crazy for thinking Rodri could be a legitimately decent pick this season? Or is he just over-performing between this, pre-season and the Champions League final.

Um, yes! DMs are never good value. You'll be chasing last GWs points - his record GW haul in his FPL history. He'll take up a vital City spot and you'll play him every week for 2-3 points with a haul 4 or 5 timers in the season.

Less prone to rotation.. is he playing further forward now withinverted full backs?

Don't see his role has changed. He always has moments when he's on the edge of the box with a thunderclap of a shot. But the returns are not frequent enough to punt on him, in my book.

Yea everyone should put him in and start him 🙂 . You should take out Saka for Rice too because he had more shots than him, and maybe take Rashford out for Toonali too.
End of the day the ball bouncing to Rodri for his goal was luck whoever thinks Rodri is going to be a good pick doesn't know football, enjoy your 2-3 weekly points

With the quality options available in midfield, probably not worth going there, but that said he is becoming more and more attacking and gets shots off most games. Good in the air, great at shooting from distance and pops up in area every now and again.

"The pre-deadline (and only just pre-deadline) rumours about Gabriel being left out of the Arsenal team turned out to be true."

That's a bit of a funny way to describe it, it wasn't widespread rumours circulating. It was a single source leak to one person and their channel.

This will just be glossed over.

I'm now of the view that Andy should keep his leaks private so it doesn't effect the game. It would just be 1 person benefiting from privileged information.

I get that's complicated by the live stream.

Still at a loss what the underlying incentive is for club insiders to tip him off directly to a tactical benching?

By definition there's something underhand going on.

Maybe only in a small way it skewers the game play but the perception stinks. Especially if the FPL servers only allow a random subset of the segment to react to it in real time.

It has tarnished the opening weekend.

Someone said the leak was shared cack-handed, unlike the Man City one which was clear and widespread.

If i were Man City or Arsenal I'd be asking who can't be trusted internally?

It does seem that Man City leak like a sieve.

I know its only a game but its basically insider trading isn't it? Obviously not as serious as that but it is making a bit of a mockery of the game no longer just being about luck but who is in the know on big decisions.

        Exactly

An account on Twitter tried to put it down to luck/variance but i was at a loss with that.

It's bad luck if you didn't hear or couldn't respond in time with servers freezing.

But it's pure privileged information if you were tipped off. It's cheating not VARIANCE!

        😉

He could do it off screen on a handheld device but that would rather blow his thing.

He was happy to parade his 14th spot on the Spotify sports podcast charts.

Impressions count on YouTube and Twitter now for ad revenue.

So there's a financial reward in all of this no matter the arrangements in place.

this 100% I've enjoyed some of the social media content this pre-season but in the back of my mind I've always had it that this is all one big gravy train, all the big accounts including Andy are linked to either here or Hub, they've all got something to sell and something to gain personally. Probably no coincidence they end up with identical teams. I quite enjoy the General's stuff but would be nice to have somebody not affiliated to one of the sites in one way or another.

Or those of us that don’t frequent YouTube or Twitter and make selections based on our own knowledge of the game. Wouldn’t bringing the deadline forward a bit give us all a more equal standing? I’d definitely be all for that.

Others were sharing it on their live stream.

The Man City leak drew me in to YouTube as they were talking about the whole team sheet.

It's cringe that this is part of game play 20 mins before deadline.

At least the Man City rumours were written down and circulating on here and Twitter more widely.

Both I'd rather do without, then it is down to your selections. Win or lose, starting or benched.

Couldn't agree less. The problem here is never Andy, it's the guy leaking the information to him.

Andy reacting to information that "might" be true is his choice. You deciding to trust Andy's information is your choice.

Though, I don't think it was a coincidence that the leak happened at that exact moment, it was probably deliberate. But again, that's a problem with the guy leaking the information, not Andy.

What's not coincidence is that Andy has this arrangement in place with an Arsenal insider.

It wasn't concrete but accurate and a previous leaker...

I can deal with widespread rumours but this was deliberate and targeted cheating.

        No other words for it.

Arrangement? Targeted cheating? You sound like a conspiracy theorist.

It's manipulation but as it's a fantasy sport let's just call it cheating.

Andy could even decide to not act on the information or block the bloke tipping him off on Instagram, email or whatever messaging service.

I wish I'd changed Gabriel to Saliba too when I saw the reports that Andy was making this last minute change.

I normally ignore these rumours because I don't trust them, but in this case I now see that Saliba had more points per game than any other defender apart from Trippier and Cancelo last season, so it was a sensible change even if the rumour turned out to be untrue.

Incidentally, 26 of the 42 teams in the Mods & Cons League (including Mark and myself) owned Gabriel and none of them benched him.
The other 16 all owned Saliba instead (none of them owned both).
Of course, I don't know how many of these had made a last minute change and which had owned Saliba already!

I think given the 50/50 nature between Gabriel and Saliba as an Arsenal defensive option, most who saw the rumour would have changed given the readymade replacement. I didn't see the rumour so have Gabriel. The timing of the leak is annoying, but I don't blame people acting on it.

I did get the news and tried a couple of times to change it, but I didn't bother trying that hard. Yes, its annoying when the Arsenal games goes on, and especially when Saliba actually gets a random assist, but what's Andy going to do, when he gets the info? I'm not sure, ideally the best thing would that it weren't leaks, but they are unfortunately a part of the internet/Twitter era, and there is a certain privilege for those living in approx the same time zone, but in the end it's not Andy's fault, and if we go by the premise that info are shared, I guess the dealing with it is more fair handled if you share it with the listeners when you get it.
And of course the disadvantage of owning Gabriel over Saliba is not to laugh about, it could be quite significant, in terms of strategies and so on, so I recognize that it's not entirely fair

So much this, I’m reading back over comments and I think in summary people agree it’s not that Andy’s the problem but ‘the leak’ and through no fault (other than the leaker and timing of it) an unfair advantage has been gained by a portion in the game throw in the random luck of who’s servers crash causes a lot of frustration for participants.

This Andy guy is trying to monetise a product. His sources allow him to provide content that rivals cannot. It makes him more popular.

The real issue is his source, who must have rocks between his/her ears. Football is a multi-billion dollar industry and this wingnut is giving away confidential information from within the club, making it public for the world to see for the sake of a game.

If this person is an Arsenal employee, and the club finds out, then they'll soon be an ex-Arsenal employee. They should also have a good read of their contract to find out what the legal implications are. They'll shyt themselves on the spot, presumably.

TBH, with most leaks, its highly risky even believing them. The majority are no doubt fake or total guesses. I guess in this case, it came from Andy, so people put more credence on it. But even those who made the change, me included, we took a big risk doing that, and didn't even know the reason why we were taking gabriel out.

The deadline has already been pushed back an hour and half, that's long enough imo.

Blame the PL imo for not controlling team sheets, and teams, well they can blame themselves if a leak is coming from within their own camp.

Its not ideal no, but its not like people have concrete information to act on, this Saliba move could have easily gone south.

Did anyone see 'the leak' and decide it would be unfair and unethical to act upon?

In other words - is this entire thread filled with people who wish they had seen the news, so they could have swapped Gabriel out?

Maybe we should point out that people who acted upon the leak, acted with insider information and therefore....

No, that's like deciding to pay double your taxes. FWIW I benefitted big time - Stones and Gabriel out, Saliba and Lewis in. I think this issue needs fixing.

I'm not judging - I swapped KDB in. Thought the concensus was the Arsenal leak was conjecture.

The issue, as you call it, is life - imperfect information and bias. FPL can't fix life (it enhances it, in my case anyway).

You want to solve the problem, start with yourself - once nobody uses leaked info anymore, the problem is gone.

I see it as a bit of a fuss about not very much. We all use sites like this and gain an edge as a result with the increasing myriad of different tools available, probably spending more time than we should on this game in the process.

Lineup leaks have always been prevalent, and if people are willing (or have nothing better to do) than to spend time scouring the internet in the hours leading up to the deadline trying to find additional info to help them make decisions, then good luck to them.

As for Andy, I am not sure whether he relies on youtube as his main source of income, but anyways he has to find an advantage over the other content creators out there. His show is good, he knows what he’s talking about so all power to him.

And I think most agree with everything you’ve said, Andy is providing a service and classic drama (not a coincidence) late team news comes in 5mins before deadline… those more invested should reap the rewards.
I personally have a real frustration with the server crashing 10-15mins before the deadline. FPL need to fix this to level the playing field, it should be fully operational right up to the deadline.

Switching Mings for “some” 4.5 mill defender leaves the question whom that should be.
        Any suggestions?

Then cross fingers for Gabriel to start….
What about Veltman - will he be on and off the bench going forward?

I was tempted to start with Maddison but decided to go Spurs-free, so I could observe how they adapt after Kane. Also they'll surely bring in 2 or 3 players before the deadline. With Man U up next, there's no harm seeing out the transfer deadline before making a decision anyway.

I'm expecting them to sign someone but for Richarlison to remain first choice. Poste seems to really like him. But they need another body in that position.

Hearing rumours of Lukaku. Not sure how strong a presser he is, and if he'd fit the new system though. But if I was Lukaku I'd want to avoid all the drama happening in Italy atm, with clubs branding him a traitor.

Agree. I think they's have been 6th/7th with Kane, and 8th/9th without him, so it would have been ultimately pointless to make him run down his contract. This needs to be accepted as a year-long rebuild with a challenge 2024/35

    6. bench boost for every gamew…
      • 8 Years

Kake is clearly a better striker than they have, and they also loses some width in the team, which can make them more vulnerable to injuries. But in the way Ange Postewhatshisname plays it's not entirely sure they're actually any worse with Richarlison up top, at least in terms of expected goals, which is the most important FPL wise. To out it differently, it may cause Spurs to be placed fifth in the table instead of fourth, but they can still score as many. If you have attackers then h kast outcome is more important than the last. Udogie, in terms of reports sounds like a 4.5 with great attacking upside, but cs could be harder to come by. I think he's worth it, at least if you can bench him in some weeks.

Something I would like to share. A kid at work put in his FPL team almost from inception. His take on it is he wants to be entertained by those who he picked:
    Pickford Areola
    TAA RJames Chillwell Udogie Estupinan
    Foden Diaby Eze Martinelli Maddison
    Jackson Pedro Haaland
I must say Nkunku was changed to Jackson and Udogie Pedro were added when he watched them.

Not one of his picks outside of Haaland was based on FPL, only who he wanted to enjoy.
A side can be picked without noise and "sense" rather than pure template.
It will be interesting how he goes.

They're not terrible, but they play with an extremely high defensive line and try to catch opposition offside a lot and Newcastle were well prepared to exploit that. The thing is there are a fair few other sides that can do it too so they will probably have other games where they'll concede a few this season, but Newcastle's high energy high press and pacey front line was primed to damage them. Mings' injury didn't help either

      1. Andy_Social
        • 13 Years

I expect Emery to put things right. I'm still keen to get Villa defensive assets in, but not for a couple of months, so there's plenty time. Maybe wide to hold off for the mo.

What that match did prompt me to, however, is to bench any City defender - that Newcastle attack can breach the best defences.

I'm very curious about that game. City do have a habit of putting a few past Newcastle, think it's 25 in their last 7 or something similar including 5 last year IIRC, probably depends on whether Pep wants a tight, controlled game or if he's willing to go toe-to-toe with their pacey breaks as City can do that too. Haaland will likely still do well there (I remember I captained him in the 3-3 despite most not doing it, only scored 1 but could have had 4 or 5) but think I'm glad I have Salah

You seem to completely have missed that they play newcastle away, and that they lost a centerback. Those two last goals are completely unnecessary to conceed though, agree on that.

Newcastle's attack just did what they did against Villa at SJP last season and against them in the friendly in the US a few weeks ago. You have to be very good to play a high line and/or play out from the back against Newcastle, especially at SJP, without conceding chances.

they still had 11 men, and it would probably be 6 goals if Martinez didn't take Almiron out.

Howe learned a lot from the preseason friendly against Villa. Seems that Emery did not, playing such a high defensive line. It also helped Newcastle that Buendia was out and also that Newcastle are very good at SJP.

First half hour up til Mingd injured they were good. Then the combination of that instance and a bit naivity coupled with Newcastle really banging on they looked worse.
You can say a lot about Mings, but he's a leader and while he died a mistake or two and looks clumsy, he's pretty fast and covers ground, Pau is a completely different kind of player. Not sure how Emery will do, probably one of two: play with deeper line, leaving less space behind or play with 3 at the back, with Carlos in with Konsa and Pau. My guess is he will adjust to whatever he decide is best from a tactical pov.

You seem to be forgetting they lost their main leader at the back on a stretcher at 2-1, who is going to be a massive miss. Cash and Watkins had chances to make the game tighter at 3-1 and when your chasing a game late on u leave spaces at the back only natural.
Easy win and C's v Everton next week

Missed the match but just watched the extended highlights of the Newcastle Villa game. Newcastle looking scary.

Gordon really impressed but then so did Barnes, their strength in depth is going to serve them very well but makes picking the right one for fantasy tricky.

What are people saying about Tonali? Haven't been considering Newcastle at all cause of fixtures but there could be some gems there.

Theyr basically a cheaper Liverpool, tons of non nailed midpriced forwards, and a creative RB

I have Trippier as a BB punt but that's it. TBH there are a lot of options to choosoe from at Newcastle, I will probably jump on someone like Isaak, Barnes in 2 weeks.

Tonali scoring was a surprise - even to himself, I'd say. Need to see a bit more to gauge whether that's a one-off. See my comment above for more thought.

Not sure about Tonali from a FPL and scoring point of view. He looks like he will be great for Newcastle. Still needs time to adapt to that right sided box to box position, if Howe wants him to do the same runs and interplay on the right as Longstaff does.

Could impact how forward Trippier gets as he wasn't getting the usually cover that Longstaff provides as Tonali drifted in field more.

So we all doing Gabriel to Saliba this week? I'm actually thinking about getting James...

Considering options. James could be one. Probably won't do the straight swap to Saliba. May even just roll & see what happens as I really don't like using an FT GW2

I'm giving it another week because its the unwritten law of FPL aka sods law that you transfer him out he's getting the winner and a clean sheet next week. I wouldn't blame anyone for doing it either but I wouldn't personally be wasting any price increase on it, feels too sideways for that would rather just go the whole hog and get Ben White.

I'm not sure yet. Barring injury and if u decide to take a gamble with Haaland not getting injured in supercup my instinct says VvD in for Bou at home. I havecth luxury to bench him vs Newcastle if u want and then it gets nice for Liverpool. Not that i expect a lot of cs though..
But Arsenal will concede vs Palace and then there is one nice but then United. VvD will be getting service from set pieces which he never have been before. Taa, Robertson hace now got competition from Szoboszlai and also McAllister, that's going to have an impact on VvD. My guess is 5 or more goals and possibly some assists too. A bit pricey.

Yea don't have the money for VVD. Only got 5.5m to spend.

Well some of us overseas get up in the middle of the night to hear the deadline stream as we do not have all the tools people in the UK have at their disposal if they choose to use them. What I didn't like, again from an overseas location, is that the FPL site froze so we couldn't use the news anyway and yet I know people that went on after me and managed! One would think they would have the site ready for the first weekend.

You could go the other way with deadlines and not have them and lock per each individual games scheduled kick off time.

Just a thought - or Premier League could go like Rugby Union 6 Nations and teams have to submit lineups 24hrs before match.
