OBSERVATIONS AND NOTES
- Arsenal have been awarded more penalties (five) than any other team this season, with three different players – Bukayo Saka (£8.5m), Martin Odegaard (£8.5m) and Kai Havertz (£7.1m) – taking them. Mikel Arteta had previously gone on record to say that Saka was his preferred taker and seemed reiterate to that point ahead of Gameweek 9 but admitted that his players are now making a collective on-field decision.
“Well, there is one but then they’ve surprised me this season! I don’t really know who is going to take it. And sometimes, when I see someone is on the ball, I’m still doubting [whether they will actually take it or pass the ball to someone else]. They have the freedom to do it, they practise a lot, and it’s what they decide on the day is the best thing to do.
“It’s a very particular moment and is very related to game-state and what you’ve been doing, how you’re feeling emotionally and confidence wise. I don’t like to get too involved in that. There is some preparation, there are certain players who, if they’re in contention to take the penalty, the practise has to be there – that’s the only thing I demand them to do. After that, it’s their decision.” – Mikel Arteta on whether Arsenal have a penalty-taking pecking order
- Kostas Tsimikas (£4.5m) replaced the injured Andrew Robertson (£6.5m) at left-back in Gameweek 9, also assuming the Scot’s set-piece duties in the Merseyside derby. Tsimikas took three corners from Liverpool’s left in the 1-0 win over Everton, with Dominik Szoboszlai (£7.0m) stepping up from that same side after the Greek was taken off. Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.9m) delivered all five corner kicks from the opposite flank.
- Crystal Palace’s big-money summer signing, teenage winger Matheus Franca (£4.9m), made his belated debut as a 70th-minute substitute in Saturday’s loss to Newcastle United. The Brazilian, who missed the first two months with injury, took four corners in his brief cameo.
- Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) has scored more penalties in the last four Gameweeks (three) than he did in all of last season (two).
- Julian Alvarez (£7.1m) has had more shots from direct free-kicks (seven) than any other Premier League player this season. They account for over 25% of his overall goal attempt count.
- Cole Palmer (£5.0m) had never taken a penalty in a senior competitive match before Gameweek 8’s successful attempt. He then followed that up with another converted spot-kick for Chelsea on Saturday.
- Five of the nine Premier League goals that Everton have scored this season have come from set plays. No other club has scored more from dead-ball situations. The Toffees are also ranked second for both shots from set plays (46) and attempts from crossed corners (30).
