With 14 clean sheets last season Swansea had the fourth best defensive record in the Premier League – a superb return for a newly promoted side. The form at the Liberty Stadium was key, with Brendan Rodgers successfully translating the passing game and possession football to the top flight, earning plaudits and admirers that included his new employers at Anfield. In the latest of our “Burning Question” articles our contributors run the rule over new manager Michael Laudrup’s chances of emulating the defensive resilience of his predecessor…

With Laudrup’s experience as a manager in Spain at Getafe and Mallorca, and with the Dane an admirer of the Spanish passing style that Swansea have adopted in recent years, Swansea’s board are hoping that they witness a seamless transition on the pitch.

It came as no surprise to see Swansea’s defence suffer a price hike as a result of last season’s achievements but despite that, the likes of Michel Vorm, Angel Rangel and Ashley Williams remain on the Watchlist, as the early fixtures fall nicely for the Swans. However, having shipped seven goals in their last three pre-season fixtures, in addition to conceding two against Colorado Rapids earlier on, there are mounting doubts that Laudrup’s side can get close to last season’s defensive returns.

Mark says…
The pre-season would indicate that it looks very unlikely. If the results over the summer are anything to go by, Laudrup appears to have unlocked a new potency up front but, on the flip side, they seem to be more vulnerable at the back. The loss of Joe Allen won’t help matters – he put in a lot of work and work his fair share of tackles alongside Leon Britton and you have to wonder whether Laudrup can find a similar blend in the engine room. Jonathan de Guzman will be earmarked as Allen’s replacement but faces an unenviable task. With Sigurdsson departed and Sinclair unsettled, there will be real concerns surrounding Swansea’s ability to withstand that “difficult second season”. Arguably, Laudrup has one of the toughest tasks in the League ahead of him: expectations will be fairly high after last season’s results and I just don’t see him getting close. Survival will be the priority and I feel Laudrup may seek to attack as a priority in order to achieve that. I see them struggling to reach double figures for clean sheets, with perhaps a few more goals being notched at the other end. A very kind opening set of fixtures will at least give Laudrup the opportunity to settle and get points on the board and, with that run in mind, I’m still very tempted by Angel Rangel as an attacking full-back with the potential for assists.

Paul says…
In a word, no. Granted, Laudrup is generally expected to maintain Brendan Rodgers’ 4-3-3 passing game but the Irishman had spent years in the domestic game refining his tactical approach before finally getting it right at the Liberty Stadium. Not only has Laudrup yet to prove himself as a top-class managerial talent, he has no experience of the British game, either as a player or a manager, and all his signings so far have come from foreign leagues – Michu and Jonathan de Guzman arrive from La Liga, while Chico makes his way from Serie A. With Gylfi Sigurdsson no longer on the books and Joe Allen also departed, Laudrup will be without the services of three key players in Rodgers’ slick possession-based system, with Steven Caulker returning to parent club Spurs after his season-long loan spell. Daniel Agger’s potential departure from Anfield could also see Rodgers return to the Liberty to tempt Ashley Williams, too, leaving the new Swans’ boss with a real defensive headache. Allied with the fact that Laudrup’s new acquisitions will need to quickly adjust to the rigours of the Premier League and it looks odds-on that the Dane will struggle to replicate the 14 clean sheets of 2011/12 next time round.

Anorak says…
A new manager, with the new ideas and signings that he brings can be a double-edged sword for most sides, especially when they are asked to follow the relative success of a predecessor, and even more so when that predecessor imbued such a specific style on the team. However, in the appointment of Laudrup, the board at The Liberty Stadium have clearly sought a man whose footballing principles align to the resources they have at their disposal. In addition to his stellar playing past in La Liga, he has maintained his interest and (like Rodgers and Roberto Martinez before him), is a student of the Spanish game, and with bona fide experience in managing both Getafe and Mallorca for single, relatively successful seasons, he has had ample oppurtunity to test out these skills.

Turning thoughts to the Swansea defence, then, there is nothing to suggest that Laudrup cannot extract the same organisation and ball-playing skills as Rodgers done through 2011-12. After all, the goalkeeper, three quarters of the back four and the deepest lying, metronomic midfielder, Leon Britton – are all still present and correct at the club. Provided that the new signings and perhaps the returning Alan Tate are integrated fully, then I don’t see any reason why ‘Fortress Liberty’ cannot continue to boost their points tally to the benefit of Fantasy managers.

West Ham could have Diarra in and line up :-
        Jussi
        Demel
        Mccartney
        Collins
        Tomkins
        Diarra
        Diame
        Nolan
        Vaz Te
        Miaga

Not sure if Noble is definitely nailed on. Hammers fans please advise.

Instead of people ditching Aguero for Tevez, what about Yaya out? I'm sure there are plenty out there who have Yaya in their midfield too and haven't looked at ditching him instead of Aguero as an option. The difference in price between a Yaya and a Tevez is only 1m so a slight reshuffle may allow you to board both the Aguero and the Tevez wagons.

I don't buy the 'upsets the balance of your team' argument, an attacker is an attacker whether he is in your front 3 or your middle 5. Most people will simply be changing a budget forward for a budget mid. Balance will only come into play when the bargains in each position emerge, as of now we are just throwing out guesses like Maloney, Pog and Petric with little guarantee of success. Yes jabronies, they are just guesses not points in the bank. 🙄

The main downside to shifting Yaya (and probably the reason most Yaya-Aguero owners haven't even contemplated it) is that you don't get that juicy extra 2.5m to play with. Moreover you may even need to shave 1m off elsewhere to upgrade Yaya in the first place but there you have it...

3.5m is the price you pay to insure you need not deal with the Tevez/Aguero conundrum. Alternatively 3.5m is the reward you get for ripping up your ticket on the Agueroplane. It's up to you whether that is worth it or not. We'll probably put the armband on the wrong one anyway because no matter how hard we try, FPL is still a clusterf*$k of epic proportions. Good luck!

      Well written. Very well written.

Sticking to the Aguero + Yaya combination myself because im looking for more minutes of city attack than anything else. Points will follow. Balotelli will certainly cause some uncertainty when fit. And i believe Aguero is less prone to rotation simply because he's fitter & better than Tevez.

    Green
    Cole, McCartney, Kaboul
    Hazard, Guthrie, Bale, Toure
    Borini, Pogrebnyak ,Aguero

    Begovic, Valencia, Cuellar, Fox

Surfer Rosa today. Not one of the 15 stayed in, waited to be sure on Valencia being a definite starter and put back in Toure for Silva. But for Spain being poor in the Olympics Mata would hardly be in there either.

    Federici
    Cole, Coloccini, Fabio
    Mata, Valencia, Toure, Cazorla
    Tevez, Suarez, Petric

    Mignolet, Allen, Clark, Tierney

    0.5m in the bank.

Probably make plenty more changes with injuries, International or otherwise, squad selections, disasters, natural or unnatural etc.

Jenkinson should start, but he hasn't been great in preseason and I was quite impressed by Yennaris who played the first half yesterday and also got a bit of gametime towards the end of last season.. So Jenkinson's not 100% nailed on while Sagna is out.

Just looking for peoples opinion on the Torres to Rooney transfer in GW2. I notice a lot of people holding back £2m to make this transfer, something I'm seriously considering myself. It does create a bit of an issue that is outside our control though.

Logic would dictate that we wait until Torres and Rooney have played to see how they get on before making the transfer (Torres could be on fire, Rooney could get injured etc). However, to do this we probably need to hold back more than £2m, due to the knee jerk nature of a significant number who play this game.

There is nothing more sure than 'geniuses' will transfer Torres out for Rooney at 11.31am on Saturday which means by the time Rooney plays on Monday, the price gap could be as much as £2.4m.

It makes sense to go with Torres over Rooney in GW1 - an extra game, Rooney not having a great record at Goodison etc, but to do this we have to either hold back €2.5m and take the 'hit' of loss of team value or make the transfer on Saturday and hope.

    How are people playing this?

    Any takers???

    Evening all

Looking at the following as provisional for GW1 post CS:

    Ruddy (Al Habsi)
    Coloccini, Hangeland, Shawcross (Cuellar, Demel)
Yaya Toure, Lampard (C), VDV, Michu (N’Zgoba)
    Torres, Tevez, Graham
    3M left.

    1. I think Carlos is worth the punt over Kun;
    2. GK a big differential from the cookie cutter Freid/Fed combo but I think without Lambert, Norwich will improve defensively and they rotate perfectly;
    3. DEFs rotate well. I know I don’t have MU/MC cover but too much doubt there and not enough value;
    4. YT worries me after playing deeper in CS than I’d like. Any thoughts on an alternative nailed on to play in the hole.
    5. Hopefully Fatty to become Cazorlo after GW2.
    6. Torres to Shrek after GW1 unless RVP goes to MU.

Appreciate your thoughts for a first time player from down under. Don’t be shy.

BTW great site, been on for four days now and love the information and banter.

downgrade one of your mid, upgrade one of your defender/keeper.
the rotation is good, but both team's CS potential is shit. no point playing norwich's goalkeeper when you THINK they can get CS. you should wait till they prove it, as you will b eplaying them week in week out, and its rotator isn;t much better either.

I would downgrade yaya tbh to a bencher/use the fund to upgrade your defense

      A hearty welcome to you!

Tevez great shout, worth the punt as you put it. YT worries me too - stay away. There'll be a bandwagon or two in the season when he picks up a goal and assist, but overall, I think he's worth avoiding. No def cover from the big clubs is ballsy, and I can see why you're in that situation, but a cheeky little A Cole wouldn't go a miss.

      Just my thoughts.

        Thanks guys

Looking at the points scored from last season and obviously being a virgin, I can't see the value of a MC/MU Def for 6.5 for a potential extra 20 points overall than a 5.0 playing every game from a non Europe team that will be subject to rotation (maybe an extra 30 points if you choose the right one.)

Similarly with the 'keepers, the way the scoring seems to be leveraged towards scoring and assists, (Hart only scored 26 more than Foster and Al-Habesi last year), there is more potential to kick ass in the mids/fwds.

I am probably way off track here but just trying to apply the principles of value and to me, the points are to be made in the attacking mids and fwds so the cash should be spent there.

Has there been a player with a greater fall from grace than Owen? The guy was a machine for Liverpool and England, won the European Footballer of the Year (I think), then went to Madrid and became either a bit part player who no one was fussed about or a massive underachiever (Newcastle).

Maybe he should have listened to Rafa...

I'm not a big fan of that defence, seems expensive. Perhaps downgrade someone (Like Hangeland to Hughes and Shawcross to Clyne/Demel etc) in order to either upgrade one of your cheap midfielders to a mid-price option, ir bump up Pog to one of the 6.0 strikers.

Depends what you want to do with differentials. I guess they have to be players who are owned by few people, but they also have to be players who are assured of starting. This is the basis of any FPL team, regardless of what kind of players you want to get.

For this reason, I don't like Kolarov, Luiz, Nasri or Defoe.
