Several weeks ago, we explained how to successfully conduct a Fantasy FC draft in the popular app Sleeper.

2024/25 is Sleeper’s first dip into Premier League life, after specialising in American sports head-to-head leagues for the likes of the NFL and NBA.

As Fantasy Football Scout is partnering with them on this journey, it only makes sense that our core team of staff sits down and does our own draft, in a quest to see who reigns supreme.

Done during the September international break, with the summer transfer window closed, we did just that. Let us know who you think has the strongest initial squad.

WHAT IS SLEEPER?

Simply download it on either the App Store or Play Store.

What is Sleeper + how can you join our free Pick'em league? 1

Built like a messenger app, Sleeper launched in 2014 as a place to chat about Fantasy games. Their initial US leagues debuted in 2017 and they’ve now decided to branch into football with some exciting Premier League and La Liga contests.

Pride is taken in its design, aided by initially hiring a bunch of casual fans and first-time Fantasy players to bring out-of-the-box ideas that created a less intimidating interface for new players. And this seems to have worked, as Sleeper continues to gain popularity.

OUR SCOUT DRAFT LEAGUE

First, let’s introduce the 10 competitors:

  • Sam Bonfield – General Manager, half of FPL Family and a regular on Sky Sports News
  • Chris James – CEO of Scout, ‘El Fozzie’ hosts our Spaces on X
  • Neale Rigg – Editor who does a bit of line-up predicting on the side
  • Tom Freeman – Deputy Editor, a differential specialist and five-time top 1k finisher
  • Marc Jobling – Staff Writer who is now the Goals Imminent podcast co-host
  • Ian (FPL Partridge) – Social Media Manager, formerly of the FPL Partridge ‘X’ account
  • Tom Johnson – Multimedia Manager, began with Ian but recently expanded into video
  • Ed Gray – Strategic Advisor, UCL podcast co-host and creator of Fantasy Football Fest
  • Louis Roberts – Fantasy Football Community Staff Writer and master of many formats
  • Scott Worrall – Social Media Executive, the newest recruit and an EFL Fantasy contributor

Once we were all settled in, a few rules were agreed upon. Sixty seconds per pick, going in a Snake order until each had chosen 17 players.

A randomised order generator handed Marc the first pick. Despite the poisonous mind games being played within the chat, he held firm and began with Erling Haaland.

Here is a visually pleasing overview of the complete Sleeper draft.

Scout staff have completed a Sleeper Fantasy FC draft

So what do you think?

Louis wasn’t initially around and his pre-selected queue of targets automatically kicked in – although his first six players are all in midfield! He held off a late push from fellow Chelsea fan Tom J to secure the most Blues assets.

Similarly, Chris did a superb job at collecting as many current or former Everton names as possible. Two-thirds of his forward line play for his beloved team, something which definitely won’t become a problem at any point.

In a staff room of numerous Newcastle United fans, Ed was able to gather five Magpies. Footballers, not birds. Two of Sam’s first three picks are defenders, while Neale sensibly looked over the scoring rules (points for tackles, interceptions etc) and noticed that Declan Rice may prove handy.

As each player can only be selected once, it quickly became difficult to select the next name. But trade requests are already underway using the app’s chat feature.

Stay tuned to see if any swaps are agreed upon. Gameweek 4 sees the first set of head-to-head Sleeper draft clashes – let the trash-talking commence.

JOIN OUR SCOUT PICK’EM LEAGUE

As well as Fantasy FC drafts, there’s Pick’em – a Premier League prediction league. You can join Scout’s for free by clicking here.

In Pick’em, all you do is predict wins and draws for the upcoming matches, earning a point for every correct guess.

Not only is there a football shirt of choice to win each month but the overall season-long winner gets £7,500 worth of prizes!

Has anyone considered the ‘power 4’ in midfield of Salah, Palmer, Saka and Son?

It of course means no Haaland but if the likes of Wissa and Isak get going, and with enablers like Rogers and Joao Pedro, could this team outscore a Haaland team?

Everyone will be on it at some point or some variant where we only have one of Haaland or Salah. Just don't know when. Now probably isn't the right time. Looking at the fixtures, after GW22.

I made a draft without Haaland, it is pretty nice TBF, but obviously depends on fixtures and timing. Can’t fit TAA though which sucks and the defense maybe needs some work.

Answering an earlier question has made me think a little deeper about the rotating keeper question as opposed to just playing one all the time.
Surely any engaged manager should be playing the rotation game and targeting the fixtures with a good rotation.

It is what I would call a "mathematically correct algorithm" as you could quite easily outscore the most expensive g/k over the season. You could also outscore the keeper who tops the points table at the end of the season.

Why is this not adhered to on this FF site as gospel I wonder?

We could be talking an extra 30 points above the best scoring keeper over the season! We should be doing it shouldn't we maths students?

Rotating keepers gives you greater variance

You could score a lot more

You could score a lot less

Greater variance sounds like a content creator's go to diatribe, but it fits the algorithm as the best potato seed structure to grow the most potatoes.
You may get less potatoes if you sew your seeds badly but at least you had a chance of an abundant crop, above and beyond.

I hope GK rotation works for me going forward: Verbruggen and Flekken from GW4 to GW7. Rotating pair to be reassessed GW8+.

Yes, this is where I'm going to I think, or something similar, even if it means bringing in a different keeper when the rotation does not work too well.

Pickford was the top scoring keeper last year with 153 points, 20 of those points came from keeping clean sheets at home to both Chelsea and Liverpool - 10 in each. Those would likely been games that you would have rotated him in.

I've noticed in the past that the 4.5m keeper who is the highest scoring at the end of the season has 2 or 3 of these "shock" clean sheets that they score heavily in. If you think you can pick these fixtures then go ahead! Add to that, keepers can do well from save points when playing the big teams and can come away with a respectable 4 points at times.

I learnt my lesson on this when I was rotating Pope with another 4.5m keeper when he was at Burnley. Burnley had three tough fixtures in a row and I benched him for all three. I think he got two clean sheets and a penalty save in the other match and ended up with about 30 points over the three games! I don't think my other keeper got any returns over the three games either.

        Great response sir.
Yes you are definitely going to be on the wrong end of those fix. decisions sometimes without doubt and there is nothing I hate more than bench points. That is why I play the game with only 12 outfield players and one strongest sub. However the g/k position does offer that "edge" I haven't used before.
I still feel there is substance to my argument. but your answer totally fulfils the anti-argument. Thank you.

          • 2 Years

I meant with the first sub (outfield) that he is always an option and I have a decision to make with a benching,
2nd and 3rd sub can go to Hell and if they ever score more than a 1 or 2 pointer then I have made a mistake.
I mean I'm always looking for those muppets to go down to 3.9 (def) or 4.4 (forwards) so I can switch to gain 0.1.
          This is how we roll.

Same...Raya NO rotation. Those who have played this game for many a season will have tried previously and been burned by playing rotating keepers. Perhaps save yourself the pain and learn from those that have tried before.

He looked a beast at youth level, looks powerful & direct, scored a lot of good goals, men’s football a completely different ballgame though isn’t it.

Palmer is in a lot of those clips with him, they have a nice run of games now, I’m interested enough to go down the rabbit hole on YouTube.

Looked at his numbers, chances created & shot wise they are not that much worse than Welbeck & that’s with them playing Liverpool & City.

I saw this on TalkSport's site as a quote from Pep so take it with a pinch of salt maybe considering the source:
“It’s his stomach, a little virus. But the people said with antibiotics and so on he will be fine.”
Antibiotics for a stomach bug doesn't sound right to me but I'm no Doctor.

people on the no Haaland, Salah main captain option train, are you not worried that Slot is asking more of his wingers defensively that soon when Chiesa is up to speed, Salah will be get subbed quite often around 75 mins? He's being brutal with TAA, no reason to believe he won't protect Salah in the same way

    1. Thanos

I was on Salah and no Haaland train but decided to WC to get him. More than the possibility of Salah getting hooked off early (he can still do the damage in limited xMins though), it's that Haaland looks physically fit and sharp. Apart from Arsenal, City's next 5-7 fixtures are as good as Pool and you really can't go without him.

Michael Owen: "There was more pure footballers back in the day. Now you have to be an athlete."

"You just have to be able to run, you have to be big, you have to be fast... you have to be covering X amount of kilometres now."

"There's loads of great players that were absolute ballers. Proper, proper talented."

"Now if you can run a bit further than anyone else and basically pass it from A to B, you're getting a decent career in the Premier League."

"You don't even have to be that good anymore. Back in the day you had to have real skill and attributes to be a top footballer."
    And I totally agree

I think he's sort of right but actually the very best now are top footballers and they are athletes. For Ronaldo and Messi to still be doing what they are doing at their age is testament to that. You can make a career of sorts from being an athlete but the very best have both.

I don’t recognise that at all.

I think we possibly had more maverick type players 25 years ago such as Le Tissier, Cantona etc. I seem to recall more talk about individual brilliance back then and much less talk about formations, systems, pressing and attacking patterns.

That said, I think the technique of players in the top flight is unmatched now. The likes of KDB, TAA, Foden are absolutely incredible technicians.

Great comment. I recently saw an early 00s game between Arsenal and Chelsea and was quite shocked by how much the ball was being lumped in the air. The game is far more technical now

Ironic coming from Owen too given pace was his most important weapon.

Of course he was a very good finisher but without his pace he did fade away pretty quickly.

agree to an extent, individuality/taking on your man is being driven out of players to gain control but the underlying technical ability is still there. you watch training videos (ok its highlights) of teams and the skill on display with the touches etc is still as good as its ever been imo

This is wrong. I've heard certain Ex players say this at the end of their careers before. Sounds like rose tinted spectacles. Every generation there's the same number of "pure" footballers as there are those that have to make up for their lack of skill with their athleticism. Both types can play football and both are welcome. What was left of Owen after his pace had gone..

Keepers and defenders are ironically having to be more technical than ever before, almost to the point of deserting their traditional defensive responsibilities. Although I suppose you could say Beckenbauer was well ahead of his time before all this inverting defenders stuff became fashionable.

I think there is something in what he said in certain areas of the park. Full backs now are athletes primarily and some of them can barely cross a ball to save their lives when they do get forward but they get selected because they can get up and down the pitch and they aren't completely hopeless at defending. Same with a lot of the midfield enforcers who just run all day, make tackles/interceptions and knock a few 10 yard passes about.

I'm not sure some of the technically gifted players who weren't athletes (Le Tissier, Cantona, Gazza) would make it in todays game.

Full backs 20 years ago were more denfence orientated and not many of them could cross. Gary Neville was a prime example.

There were one or two like Ian Harte and Andy Hinchcliffe who could be they were lacking in other areas.

Palmer to Saka and maybe even Robertson to Gabriel/Saliba in a few weeks:

    Johnstone
    Robertson | Porro | Lewis
    Salah | Palmer | Mbeumo | Eze | Semenyo
    Haaland | Joao Pedro

    Fabianski | Greaves | Mosquera | Ui-Jo

I think you're too light on your bench, especially as Lewis may not be a starter soon and Pedro's fixtures are turning soon.

Johnstone is also a (calculated) risk.

That said - I'm also on WC and until today I was carrying a very very similar team to this, so I know where you're coming from on this
