Is it Worth doing an injured Havertz ➡️ Evanilson/Isak -4 in case of a no show?

With Palmer flagged and Rogers up against LIV…

    TAA/Robinson/RAN/Lewis/VDB
    Salah/Palmer/Mbeumo/Bruno/Rogers
    Wissa/Cunha/Havertz

Having got over TROIS being used to described a graph with QUATRE variables, I've had a re-read and would like to say - I think people are going to misinterpret each data point being an (unweighted) average of the next 5 fixtures so badly.

For example, in the article Fulham's swing looks awful from GW12 because Crystal Palace (GW11) is done and Liverpool (GW16) enters the 5 game average. In fact GW12 is the worst (highest) point in the series. But the actual GW12 fixture is Wolves. At home. Which is one of the best matchups in the league.

If you're just eyeballing this stuff to make decisions, you'll be timing moves incorrectly at times. Now you can argue that you shouldn't take stats at face value and context is required, but the point of a graph is to present information so you can do exactly that!

I mean, using the actual season ticker is the best thing to do. Wolves show as a blue/good fixture and you could then see that match followed by more red/bad fixtures.

To get the most out of these charts you do need to have the knowledge that this is a five-match average rating, with equal weighting applied to each fixture.

I could add weighting to the averages, so the next fixture is given greater importance than the last fixture in a five-match sequence. That might help.

These are made using Google Sheets and the idea is members can have their own copy to tweak settings, or play around with the group charts. Having the option to apply a recency weighting or the ability to change the rolling average period would be good. Perhaps the ability to adjust the fixture difficulty ratings themselves would also be useful.

The charts are for medium to long term planning. I'd like someone to look at the chart for Fulham and think GW12 probably isn't the best time to get one of their players because their fixtures after Wolves are not the easiest. If that's going to be misinterpreted then, yes, they fail in their intention.

Did you ever try just doing a one for one swap of the fixture ticker to a line chart? I'm not sure the 5 game weighted scores specifically help other than just having each fixtures actual individual difficulty mapped to a chart to show the ebbs and flows of the season.

          Correction -
'help other than just having' = 'help compared to just having'

Having a five-game average smoothes out the curves, otherwise it just jumps up and down a lot. Also I think it's easier to read the season ticker itself in that case, because it works well with the colour formatting and the fixtures easily visible.

It's not a weighted average at the moment, and I feel from some of the comments that it probably should be... applying a recency weighting to give more importance to the next fixture over the match in 5 GWs time would help give it more intuitive feel perhaps... Or I just bin them and move on to the next idea 😀

How about just doing an article highlighting the swings and trends rather than have us sort through the spaghetti?

  21. abhibasskoffee

Why are the swings dropping drastically everytime someone plays Liverpool. Top of the league should count for something.
