Pre-season training is underway for most Premier League players – and the first friendlies of the summer have also begun in earnest, too.

Liverpool, Everton and Bournemouth were among those playing warm-up matches at the weekend.

We’ve rounded up a few key talking points from each of their friendlies, with more reports to view below:

LIVERPOOL 5-0 STOKE

Darwin Nunez scores treble as Wirtz assists

  • Goals: Nunez x3, Ngumoha, Chiesa
  • Assists: Wirtz x2, Szoboszlai, Jones, Gakpo

With all the talk on Merseyside surrounding Liverpool’s swoop for Hugo Ekitike, Darwin Nunez served up a reminder of his (disputed) abilities by firing a hat-trick against Stoke City in a behind-closed-doors friendly.

Rio Ngumoha and Federico Chiesa were also on target for the Premier League champions, who started with a strong XI including Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and new signing Florian Wirtz.

Nunez opened the scoring early on when Stoke failed to clear Wirtz’s attempted through ball for Dominik Szoboszlai. That’s an example of one of the ‘new’ assists that FPL assets would get next season.

Darwin completed his 14-minute treble by converting balls from Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones.

Midway through a one-sided first half, promising winger Ngumoha cut inside and scored with a deflected shot. Wirtz provided the assist once more.

Arne Slot changed the whole team for the second half. Ben Doak hit the post after Federico Chiesa’s shot had been saved, while Cody Gakpo, Chiesa and Doak all tested Jack Bonham. Liverpool sub keeper Armin Pecsi denied Seko in a rare Stoke attack.

Gakpo was on corners in the second half, and picked out Wataru Endo to go close before Luca Stephenson blazed over from Jeremie Frimpong‘s cut-back. The Reds finally grabbed the fifth two minutes from time when Gakpo was picked out at the back post by Frimpong and the Dutchman teed up Chiesa to score.

After a quiet-ish debut, Frimpong really caught the eye with his pacy attacking raids. There was a reason he was so advanced, however: he was playing right wing!

Indeed, there were four full-backs on the pitch after the interval. Conor Bradley and Milos Kerkez were in their normal positions, with Kostas Tsimikas at centre-back.

Remember that Frimpong could be an ‘out of position’ FPL option when Salah departs for AFCON in December.

While it’s redundant to draw too many conclusions from a behind-closed-doors friendly, what is noteworthy is Chiesa’s omission from the upcoming trip to the Far East. It seems the Italian is set to end his short stay at Anfield.

Liverpool first-half XI: Mamardashvili, Gomez, Van Dijk, Szoboszlai, Nunez, Salah, Jones, Robertson, Wirtz, Ngumoha, Nyoni.

Liverpool second-half XI: Mamardashvili (Pecsi 59), Endo, Konate, Chiesa, Gakpo, Tsimikas, Gravenberch, Doak (Stephenson 74), Kerkez, Frimpong, Bradley.

BOURNEMOUTH 6-2 BRISTOL CITY

FPL notes: Semenyo on cusp of ban + Beto's competition 6

In a match played across four 30-minute periods (that’s what you get when you have an American owner), Bournemouth showed no signs of ring-rustiness in front of goal.

The first ‘match’ was won 4-0 thanks to goals by Antoine Semenyo and Marcus Tavernier and a brace from new signing Adrien Truffert.

The second 60-minute contest finished 2-2 with Dango Ouattara and Evanilson on target.

There is little information to go on in terms of line-ups and assists but it is interesting to note that Truffert bagged twice.

FPL managers looking for a cheap Milos Kerkez replacement may have just the man in the form of… Milos Kerkez’s replacement.

The left-back, who arrived from Rennes recently, could be just as attacking as the Hungarian. Kerkez is £1.5m more expensive now that he is a Liverpool player.

BLACKBURN ROVERS 1-0 EVERTON

After a goalless draw in their first pre-season friendly with Accrington Stanley, Everton succumbed in their second. The Toffees lost 1-0 at Championship side Blackburn.

Idrissa Gana Gueye and Iliman Ndiaye returned to the starting XI after only recently returning to training. New signing Mark Travers was also part of a strong home line-up.

Everton fell behind after only seven minutes when Dione De Neve converted Callum Brittain’s cross. Gueye then whistled a shot just wide after a clever lay-off by Dwight McNeil.

David Moyes rang the first changes early in the second half, bringing on Michael Keane and impressive youngster Justin Clarke. While O’Neil and Carlos Alcaraz showed glimpses of class, they could find no further breakthrough.

Everton were indeed indebted to Travers for saving Harry Pickering’s curling free-kick late on.

Safe to say the Blues will be grateful to have new forward Thierno Barry in at Finch Farm this week as they are still sorely lacking a cutting edge.

Everton XI: Travers, Patterson (Heath 55), O’Brien, Branthwaite, Mykolenko, Garner (Armstrong 55), Gueye, Alcaraz (Clarke 72), McNeil (Metcalfe 80), N’Diaye (Keane 55), Beto (Chermiti 72).
