Shortly after the relaunch of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) for 2025/26, we attempted to pick out the best £4.0m defenders in the game.

Now that we’ve seen every pre-season friendly take place, we have an even better idea of which of these bargain buys will start in Gameweek 1.

£4.0M DEFENDERS – PRE-SEASON GAME-TIME

Before we go further, a quick look at the £4.0m defenders with the most pre-season minutes. This data comes courtesy of our trusty Pre-Season Minutes Tracker.

We should stress that some sides contested friendlies, especially earlier in the summer, that were played behind closed doors and were kept relatively hush-hush. Line-up information wasn’t available for those games, so the true number for some of the names below may be slightly different.

With that caveat ringing in your ears, here are the leading names for (known) pre-season game-time:

    Hows this current draft?

    Sanchez
    Murillo, porro, diouf
    Palmer, wirtz, Salah, Anderson, sarr
    Watkins, bowen

    Bench, dubravka, Andersen, esteve, guiu

What the hells going on with Dubravka now, every time I get a cheap goalie, they get an injury 😀

    4 more days to go...

    Kelleher
    VdV AWB N.Williams
    Salah Palmer Bruno Wirtz Anderson
    Watkins Wood

    Vald Guiu Konsa Esteve

Triple NFO feels wrong... but it enables Watkins, I keep moving back to Wood... should I just go Pedro and be done with it?

Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

NFO have scored one goal all preseason and you've got two of them across your midfield and attack. That's my main flag.

Prefer Watkins to Wood or Pedro myself. I like Villa's fixtures and unlike Forest and Wood, they should score goals, I am ready to proven dead wrong on Pedro but I don't like the idea he'll be getting subbed on 70ish.

I think Pedro on an average 60 mins out scores Wood on 90. Plus if he keeps blanking he could be at risk.

Also picking between Guiu and Anderson each week could get frustrating. KDH should outscore Anderson, plus be a bit more fun.

I think I’d be more tempted to keep Haaland given Liverpool attackers more certain. Gakpo or Ekitike will free up a few million to upgrade the defence and Gooey

Does anyone know what happens in the FPL Draft if the picks have already been done but now Sesko has been added? Do transactions happen before the first game?

    1. Ron_Swanson
      • 15 Years
      4 months, 8 days ago

If a player (like Sesko) is added to FPL after the draft has already concluded, here’s what happens in FPL Draft mode:

      1. New players enter by waivers ⇒ not part of initial draft

Newly added players are not automatically available for drafting—they must first enter through the waiver system or the free agent pool .

      2. How waivers work

      • You can submit a waiver request to exchange one of your current squad players for the new arrival (like Sesko), assuming your league settings permit it .
      • Waiver requests are processed typically 24 hours before the Gameweek deadline .
      • The waiver order initially mirrors the reverse of the draft order before GW1—and after a successful claim, your team usually moves to the bottom of the waiver queue for that Gameweek

      3. After waivers come free agency

      • Once waivers are processed, if no one claimed the new player via waiver, they become a free agent—meaning anyone in your league can pick them directly up until the Gameweek deadline

See a lot of teams with Neco Williams instead of Aina. Any reason? Aina seemed more attacking last year

    1. shorey143

As the season went on Neco got into much better positions. However given their lack of goals if you can find the £0.5 better to get one of the CBs who have more chance of the extra 2 points

            Raya (Dubs)
            Chalobah Aina VdV (Dorgu Esteve)
            Saka Palmer Semenyo Rogers Rutter

Some people skipped Aina because he wasn't in pre-seaosn. But he has featured in the final two games. I'd go Aina personally.

Neco not only more attacking but would have been awarded DC points in 32% of his games; Aina would have got them in just 11% of his.

I’m BB’ing w1 and then running through with at least 3 transfers in w6. Possible FH2 depending how Arsenal and Leeds play in w1

    Sanchez
    Porro De Cuyper Milenkovic
    Palmer Kudus Wirtz Bruno Georgino
    Watkins Ekitike

    Verbruggen Evanilson RAN Reinildo

Things to wait on - Super Cup, Isak updates, £4m keeper starting in Fridays team news

Not the easiest start for the top 3 so figured spread the funds and build up some transfers.

Haaland drafts feel like too many compromises

    Would love some feedback……

Yeah I know. Not wedded to it but wanted a differential or two. He can play behind or instead of Welbeck. O’Riley is a threat but think he’s more box to box than a 10. Games not great at the start but they’re quite a quick transition team so they’re more likely to score each match than not.

    Hi all

Think Liverpool might tear Bournemouth a new one on Friday.

Might cover all non Salah bases with Gakpo, Wirtz and Ekitike for week one and work on basis they should score a few.

Fair to think all three start given they all started in the Charity Shield?

Yeah don’t mind the triple attackers given they have a tricky start and liable to concede each game. Semenyo, Evanilson, Tavernia, Brooks, Dango or whoever their front 3/4 are counter quickly so think there is a good chance they will at least score 1

They got like 5 cs last season. Even Robinson with all of his attacking threat was a useless option. A high score for Robinson was 4 points.

Harry Wilson looks good in pre-season, but her always does, but then barely features in the league.

Not much reason to go there unless one of them shows good form in the league.

Aside from pens, Salah has never scored an open play goal in any of the 4 Community Shield games for Pool. 4 appearances, and 1 assist going back to 2019.

Removing Salah based on that game is pretty insane.

        1. boroie
          • 7 Years

I’m not basing it on that game. I’m basing it on the fact that I can only afford one of Salah and Haaland. There are no other good City options, but there are plenty of other Liverpool options.

I had both… but knew one had to come out… I just couldn’t decide which to come out… I think the fact that Etikite and Writz doing well has influenced me much more than Salah not performing well. I know what Salah can do. The Community Shield doesn’t change that. But Etikite and Writz looked good and are a lot cheaper than Salah. There isn’t the same alternative to Haaland.

I don’t think that even bothers me that much… pretty sure something similar was said last pre season.

It’s the fact that Etikite, Writz and Gakpo all offer attractive alternatives into the Liverpool attack, whereas there are no alternatives to Haaland into the City attack, and realistically I can only afford one of Salah/Haaland.

Hello folks, hope you’re all well, here we are again.

      First RMT of the season

      Kelleher
      VVD VDV Milenkovic
      Rice Palmer Odegaard Wirtz Xhaka
      Gyokeres Haaland

      Dubrovka De Cuyper Guiu

I could just about do Saka instead of Martin if I stripped a bit more out the defence but it looks a bit too weak. I think Rice will surprise a lot of people FPL wise this season.

        Love it!

Go Zubi over Rice or Odegaard for the extra dough and get rid of your Tottenham player!

I think you can go much better than Odegaard unless you are absolute set? Sarr or Mitoma I think easily outscore Odegaard as an example

For a Salah and Haaland squad, this is ok isn’t it? Please let me know what you think. Thanks.
      Raya, Dubravka
      VVD, VDV, Milenkovic, Esteve, Reinildo
      Salah, Wirtz, Kudus, Reijndeers, Caicedo
      Haaland, Pedro, Guiu

Yep about as good as it gets I think, I’d probably have another punt instead of Kudus and spend a million elsewhere, O’Riley maybe

I like it , probably would go KDH over Caicedo and upgrade one of the 4.0 def.

Bit light on the bench to be going with Reijnders & Pedro. Maybe pick more nailed players to make this structure work? I think you can do better than Caicedo, too. Anderson and Baleba seem better value to me for a similar type of point-scorer. Downgrade Raya if you need more money. Lotta money for a keeper, unless you envision him getting assists on the break this season!

Looks good to me, you could drop Raya down to a £5/4.5 and upgrade elsewhere otherwise very strong

        Looks great for 3-5-2
Kudus (Guiu) > JSL (King) for 3-4-3

This is nice. Tempted but don't have the nerves to go without one or the other - not yet.

Sorry. That should read "...to go with both" - their combined current form doesn't, for me at least, justify the funds they take up as a package when there's great value elsewhere. But a nice line-up all the same.

      How is she looking?

      Sanchez Dubravka
Esteve De Cuyper Konsa Dorgu Diouf
      KDH Palmer Salah Reijnders Gakpo
      Haaland JPedro Guiu

Thinking of only going Sels over Sanchez atm

As far as a Salah and Haaland draft goes that’s strong

Just far too many risks for me… you could conceivably have a situation where none of KDH, Reijnders, Gakpo, Pedro and Guiu don’t start a couple of weeks into the season…

Hello all! I am very excited for the new season as I am sure nostalgia of you are.

Which do you think is the best option for the opening of the season?

      A) Gakpo and Mateta
      B) Sarr (Palace) And Ekitike

      Many Thanks

Close call. Mateta being on pens could be the deciding factor.

Curious which word nostalgia was before the autocorrect. Most?

Rank Gakpo, Writz, Etikite 1-3 (1 being best option, 3 being worst)…

Anyone have any ideas if Estevao might start for Chelsea? Might be a nice differential.
