The type of low-key victory that title-winners grind out?

Time will tell if 2025/26 is yet another false dawn for Arsenal but the Gunners went back to the top of the Premier League with a 1-0 win over Fulham on Saturday night.

Our Scout Notes, however, start with an injury update from the Cottagers’ camp.

ANDERSEN INJURY

Joachim Andersen (£4.5m) has been one of the star performers for defensive contribution points (DefCon) this season. He’d reached the threshold in six successive fixtures going into Gameweek 8.

He was deprived of the chance to extend his run by a hamstring injury on Saturday, however.

The Dane and Tom Cairney (£4.9m) were both forced off but it’s the 4%-owned defender who is the bigger concern for Marco Silva.

“We have to wait, Joachim is a hamstring injury, he felt something. Now it’s just, for us, a matter of time to know if it’s something more serious or a minor injury. That is really what will come in the next few hours, few days after the exams, because that is a muscle injury.

“Tom Cairney was something in his back, he felt it when he jumped for one ball. It doesn’t look so serious, it’s a different one, it was a knock there, he was not feeling good. I think that next week is going to be [fine]… it’s not [likely] that situation is going to be another absence for us but Joachim could be out.” – Marco Silva

SAKA REWARDED FOR ALL-ROUND DISPLAY

It’s not often the case that the best player on the park gets bonus points if they’ve failed to deliver an attacking return or a clean sheet.

But Bukayo Saka (£9.9m), the clear stand-out for the Gunners on Saturday, did get justly rewarded.

He was excellent down the right flank for Arsenal, twisting and tormenting Ryan Sessegnon (£5.4m). He created more chances (six) than any other Premier League player on Saturday, somehow swerving an assist.

One brilliant piece of dribbling nearly forced an own-goal, while he ‘assisted the assister’ with his corner for the only goal of the game. Teeing up Viktor Gyokeres (£9.9m) for a couple of chances, Saka also won a penalty when being felled by Kevin (£6.0m) – only for the VAR to overturn it.

Saka himself nearly scored after another jink into the box.

The chance creation helped him to two bonus points but just as crucial was his off-the-ball work.

In fact, he was the only Arsenal player on show to hit the DefCon threshold:

He looks in fine form.

GYOKERES + EZE BLANK

Keeping Saka fit may be the difference between a successful title challenge and yet another failed one. No other attacker in this Gunners team is quite on his level.

Gyokeres blanked again. He battled gamely, slowly growing into the match after a very quiet start and twice firing straight at Bernd Leno (£5.0m). There’s certainly an argument that his presence is benefiting the wingers, with his occupying of the backline freeing up space for the previously doubly marked Saka.

But in terms of goals of his own, his confidence is clearly low – hence these sorts of comments below from Arteta.

Eberechi Eze (£7.6m) was quieter than in previous games, too, barely making it to the 60-minute mark before coming off. There is some mitigation: the right-sided central midfield role, vacated by the injured Martin Odegaard (£7.9m), doesn’t seem to suit him as much.

injury Andersen

“He’s more used to probably attacking open spaces and breaks and facing and carrying the ball with the space in front of him, but he’s so good and comfortable doing that. I think he had his moments today, he put Viktor, I think, once or twice through in really good spaces and maybe if that would have finished in a goal, it would have looked a little bit different. But I’m very happy with what he’s doing and we can use him in different positions, and today we used him on that one and we carry on trying to improve.” – Mikel Arteta on Eberechi Eze

CALAFIORI THREAT

Gabriel Magalhaes (£6.3m) grabbed a flicked headed assist for Leandro Trossard‘s (£6.9m) winner. That was Arsenal’s eighth goal from set plays already this season, which accounts for over half of their total.

Gabriel may have secured an attacking return, and offers such a threat from set plays, but Riccardo Calafiori (£5.7m) continues to be Arsenal’s most menacing defender outside of corners. He had another two (legitimate) shots on Saturday, with a goal also chalked off for offside. His positioning, like it was for that disallowed strike below, is absurd (and Alonso-esque) for a left-back:

Above: Calafiori is shooting at a faster rate than Saka this season!

PLENTY OF FULHAM EFFORT – BUT ARSENAL DEFENCE WINS OUT AGAIN

Fulham started the better of the two sides on Saturday night but for all their effort, they didn’t trouble David Raya (£5.7m) on a single occasion.

That’s two matches in a row Arsenal haven’t allowed one shot on target.

Harry Wilson (£5.3m) had four efforts from around the edge of the area but all were off-target and none were big chances (Fulham as a whole didn’t have any), with this excellent Gunners defence going from strength to strength.

Raul Jimenez (£6.2m) at least returned from injury after the Cottagers were strikerless in Gameweek 7, while breakout star Josh King (£4.5m) was yet again the pick of the Fulham attack.

There’s certain players that analytics/expected value never meets the reality

Bruno is the standout - hasn’t delivered on his price for about 2 years at least, but the models and the analytics creators still love him .

I guess he’s due, it’s only a matter of time

Most of them missed out on Reijnders, Stach, Gyokeres and DCL double digit hauls. Late on Haaland and only 36 out of 64 own Semenyo.
I'd bet most started with Wirtz, just like they did with Nkunku last season. Not to mention the DCL pick again.
Most of them probably don't even watch games and if they do, they likely have no idea what are they seeing.
Crunching the numbers will usually push the players that did well recently, hence late on most of the hauls.

I don't know if other folks have similar experiences but it seems I can never be totally satisfied with that game...when I have a poor week I feel miserable (from an fpl point of view of course, all is relative 🙂 ) and when I have a great week I dwell on decisions that I could have taken which would have made the gw even better...

A bit, but the feeling doesn't last too long. I'm already optimistic that the minus points I took getting Estêvão and Caicedo in for Doku and Foden might just pay off next week or the following week!

A mix of perfectionism, obsession, and a desire to maximise points. I have in the past felt the same way as you.

The problem is, that it is so so so unlikely to be able to maximise every decision. You want more, and because you consider so many decisions, it makes it feel like you could have achieved that outcome when in reality you wouldn’t have.

I took a few years out of the game and realised once I knew my overall rank history wasn’t important as I thought it once was, I started to play more patiently, watched/read little content, and accepted I had no control over outcomes.

This reduced the amount of decisions I was exposing myself to each week (because I know was not considering nowhere near as many, picking players I was comfortable with for many weeks) which significantly reduced the “pressure” I was putting on myself to do well, and then in turn I enjoyed the game more.

I am also a lot more self-reflective; when things go wrong I am better at being able to accept I made a mistake and to switch off if it was a clanger and then go again, or make a note of the error and refer back to it when needed.

My biggest piece of advice is to try and stop applying so much pressure to achieving an almost impossible maximisation of points. Even those flying will have made errors or been on the wrong side of decisions!

      1. Athletic Nasherbo
        • 8 Years

My understanding of overall rank in Gw38, is the ones who made the least amount of “clangers” combined with a steady stream of great decisions. If you don’t make a good decision this week, make sure you try and do it the following weeks.

thank you for taking the time to give such a detailed reply 🙂 you are totally right, it's near impossible to max all decisions so I need to be more positive with the good decisions I make. at the end of the day regardless of what folks say, luck plays a major part. I never used to be so obsessed with overall ranks years ago when I didn't go on forums and was just playing for my mini league , so being top of the league was enough for me regardless of being top million or top 100k. thanks again and hope you have a good week 🙂

I took -64 during my best season and lost top 5k by one point. Selling a defender to a better one with good fixtures usually didn't cost me, because 6-4 =2 (= 2). Of course I was lucky, but 45% CS is much more likely outcome than 15% chance.

I picked Woltemade over Mateta and I am happy for the goal. Mateta hattie was always possible, but impossible to predict. Therefore I have no regrets because of the outcome. Same with getting Bruno gw1. It isn't my fault that he missed two pens. Hindsight based on outcome is stupid, unless you think you can foresee the future.

I may have used the word optimal if I had remembered it! It was on the tip of my tongue so I stuck with maximising.

I fluked a great finish once, went a bit into that spiral about both bad and good weeks the next year, and then realised that you can’t chase the top 0.00001%. It’s been very freeing realising my best result is behind me. I still spend silly amounts of time on the game but minimal dwelling on “what might have been”. When I do it’s because I’m annoyed about a bad process/decision rather than points

It's brilliant, because of the Arsenal-Palace fixture people transferring out Gyokores or Pedro etc are ignoring Mateta.

Even though he scored at the Emirates last time out.

    Woltemade will be favoured.
And whoever scores next out of Isak or Bowen for example.

    Welbeck merits consideration too.

There are options in the forward line.

Yes. And I feel Isak will also be in consideration once they start ticking.

I took a chance on Isak this week, hoping to get ahead of the curve.

Is there a tactic where when deciding a player, bring in one that your most of your main rivals have in the mini-league to cancel out the threat? Basically I'm asking if people sometimes choose players with an eye on what their rivals are doing.

Nearer the end of the season if i'm leading i might do it, or chasing i might go different to them, dont really bother this early.

If I'm in a money league and leading by only 5-10pts towards the end of the season, I do/did that.

Pick the players who get points let others copy you, get on early otherwise no gains

Keeping him was skilful in probably the first four or five gameweeks, post that it was stupidity and stubbornness. BTW, I kept him till 7

What to do here? 2FT and WC already played:

    Roefs
    Gabriel | James | Senesi
    Salah | Semenyo | Sarr | Ndiaye | Reijnders
    Haaland | Mateta

Dubravka | Alderete | Esteve | El Kroupi

    Thinking of Reijnders to Xhaka?

      Reijnders to Xhaka
      Senesi to Munoz works…

Though annoyingly sold Munoz to James on WC

Start Groupie over Sarr I'd say. And replace Reindeers with Caicedo, Xhaka or even Anthony if want to go extra punty.

Cheers was thinking Reijnders to Xhaka but then start El Kroupi over Xhaka
