Most tuned-in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers will by now know that we’ve all received a free transfer top-up ahead of the Gameweek 16 deadline.

This, the Premier League have explained, is to help us deal with the impact of players leaving to compete in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

With participating players having to join up with their national teams a minimum of one week before their first match, the vast majority of affected FPL assets – including Mohamed Salah (£14.0m), Bryan Mbeumo (£8.5m) and Iliman Ndiaye (£6.5m) – should be available for selection in Gameweek 16 before jetting off.

So, what are the rules around using this new batch of free transfers? We have the answers.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I’VE ROLLED TRANSFERS OVER FROM GAMEWEEK 15?

Unfortunately, the rule that we can have a maximum of five free transfers saved up at any one time still applies here.

If, for example, you rolled two going into Gameweek 16, you’d only get a) your normal weekly transfer and b) two additional ones.

DO THEY HAVE TO BE USED ALL THIS WEEK/AT THE SAME TIME?

Thankfully, you don’t have to use all of your free transfers from the AFCON top-up this week. Nor do you have to use them all at the same time.

In fact, you don’t even have to use any of them for Gameweek 16 itself – but again, remember that you then wouldn’t be able to rack up six free transfers for Gameweek 17, due to the cap of five.

But, it’s handy to know that if your team is already fairly well set up to deal with AFCON, there’s no rush to use all of them.

CAN I USE A CHIP WITH MY FIVE FREE TRANSFERS?

It’s an easy “yes” that you can use any/all of your free transfers at the same time as playing your Bench Boost or Triple Captain chip.

As for the Free Hit or Wildcard…

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE TRANSFERS IF I FREE HIT IN GAMEWEEK 16?

Just like any other Gameweek, any free transfers you’ve accumulated in the weeks leading up to playing your Free Hit will be retained when you revert back to your original team the following week.

So, if you don’t use any of the five free transfers we’ll all have in Gameweek 16 and instead choose to Free Hit, all five of those free transfers will still be waiting for you in Gameweek 17.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE TRANSFERS IF I WILDCARD IN GAMEWEEK 16?

Similarly, if you decide to Wildcard in Gameweek 16, you’ll keep hold of any banked free transfers – i.e., the full top-up of five, in this case – come Gameweek 17, essentially giving you the opportunity for a subsequent “mini-Wildcard” if you so chose.

The main difference between a Free Hit and a Wildcard is of course that the latter’s (unlimited) changes to your FPL squad are permanent.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I USE SOME OF MY FREE TRANSFERS NOW THEN ACTIVATE A CHIP LATER IN THE WEEK?

This is a question we see in the comments section most weeks!

In short, activating a Free Hit or Wildcard – no matter if it’s now or one minute before the deadline – means you’ll not use any of your free transfer allowance for Gameweek 16.

You’ll still have five free transfers to use come Gameweek 17.

I would say that this weekend is possibly one of the 4 or 5 times you could play Dubravka this season and have a sporting chance of a clean sheet so I'd go for him.

I have used all of my 5 FT as my team needed real surgery and I was really conscious of the price drops. By doing it I do however have sufficient cash in the bank to sell Gravenberch and buy Bruno Fernandes - at a -4. If I did that would leave me with a midfield of - Rice - Minteh - Foden - Bruno G - Bruno F. Is the -4 worth taking given Man Utd upcoming fixtures?? Thoughts please.

Liverpool don't have their troubles to seek but they do have better fixtures than Manchester United over the next four game weeks. Don't forget that Gravenberch has better PPG than Bruno as well.

With Hincapie and Timber being honking on Saturday, any chance of Timber and White swapping positions, with Calafiori playing LCB?

Yeah, the Calafiori-Eze left side combo is also pretty poor defensively, so they'd have to do some tweaking if Saliba being "a matter of days" is typical Arteta BS.

Yeah I can see Timber RB and White RCB. Once Calafiori has served his 1 game suspension, I think it's possible we could see Calafiori LCB and Hincapie LB. Hincapie has played LB for Arsenal and Spain this season. I don't think MLS is ahead of those two when all three are fit and available

This was probably the best week to WC because of the 5 transfers meaning players (Like Foden) are rising and falling twice in one GW. But you should have played it already to capitalize 100% on that.

Salah took no responsibility for his 6 months of trash performances and basically said "I deserve to play anyway". He threw his toys out of the pram when he was benched for the first time in the CL and deleted all Liverpool references on his socials. I imagine there was some kind of meeting after that where he said the same, some kind of variant of "I deserve to play all the time" and showed little to no understanding of being benched after mediocre performances. After that he has been out in the cold.

Wonder how long the people who support Salah think he should have kept being a regular starter despite awful performances.

I know his conduct has been poor, you’d have to ask why he’s been dropped over others who have been just as poor who don’t have his pedigree, Konate a prime example, playing like a donkey week in week out but still starts.

You can't use whataboutery v other players. Certainly those in other positions. Salah's qualities and shortcomings are and always will be different to others.

I would point to his inability to track back. Its well documented on many a post-match analysis, when Liverpool's form took a nosedive, ho exposed he would leave Bradley to deal.

Its clear Slot needed to turn to some form of basics. Is that the 'promise' Salah had under Klopp and in the summer that he would never have to do that? Who knows.

Ultimately Slot is taking the decisions that he feels is best at this moment in time to find answers and return to winning form. If it doesn't work, he knows what the outcome will be for him.

But he HAS to be allowed to make those decisions without players coming out to the media like Salah has. Its completely unacceptable behaviour and anyone who defends him needs for it needs to give their head a wobble.

Agreed unacceptable how he’s come out about it, Salah has never been strong defensively and expecting a 33 year old to develop that part of his game as a winged forward is bizarre imo, if that has happened.
It would obviously see a drop in performance if it is the case.

Well that's the point. Slot isn't expecting him to develop - what he's doing is dropping the player that can't offer you those qualities for someone who hopefully can. That is tough on Salah but that is football.

That's not to say that these are the exact reasons btw - only Slot knows that for certain, but either way, he's the man in charge and that should be respected.

The sooner Salah and everyone realises it, the sooner it all makes sense to those individuals and life can carry on.

wirtz has been dropped, isak has been dropped, gakpo has been dropped, cheisa never starts, robbo has been dropped. literally anyone with a replacement has been out. Cant single out one player (who happens to not have any decent replacement) to prove a point.

Well that’s Slot’s fault there isn’t a decent replacement for Konate, who has probably been the worst performer.

I just think it’s virtually impossible for a player of Salah’s standard to all of a sudden months after a record breaking season to be as bad as he has been for it to not be someone like the manager’s fault, tactics, formation or what he’s asking for that player to do.

If he is asking him to track back or trying to coach a 33 year old who’s strength is clearly not that then that proves Slot is out of his depth.

For example Salah is 100% wider and deeper than he was playing last season, whether that’s because of the qualities players like Darwin/Jota gave in terms of allowing space for Salah to run into I don’t know.

But either way that’s still a change the manager has made or asked Salah to do, not Salah himself.

ok right, slot's at fault for not prioritizing a cb. whats he supposed to do now in the middle of the season? drop him so he can justify dropping salah too? whats that got to do with anything?

slot is trying to find solutions. part of the solution is trying different players. doesnt help when one of ur players throws him prams out at getting dropped. remember he tried dropping all their other attacking players before it got to Salah but u conviniently ignored that part

Agreed, I imagine it was a rush of emotions and the fact Liverpool conceded a last minute equaliser all playing its part.

Those mixer zones are there for a reason to catch these players out and unfortunately Salah fell for it.

No you’re right about the other forwards being dropped, but they nearly always came on, and I think for Salah he would want to come on and affect a game.

In 2 of those 3 he didn’t even come on, and in one of those games (Leeds) the win wasn’t secured and he still didn’t.

Slot could look to the youth team to prove a point with Konate.

There is a reason why Slot hasn't dropped Konate yet...

          CB options:
          - VVD
          - Konate
          - Gomez (just back from long term injury, filling in at RB)
          - Gravenberch (reluctant to start him CB over CDM, fine to move him when chasing the game)
          - Endo

I imagine its mostly his response to being dropped the first time. Literally everyone except VVD has been "dropped".. its been mass rotation in the side. Salah threw a tantrum the first time he was benched in a meaningless CL game. If Salah had just gotten on with it and accepted that until his performances improve, he too has to expect the odd benching or early sub, I doubt the situation would be as it is now.

Its impossible to know whats going on behind closed doors though.

Think you have to bite bullet & get Foden, in three games you are 44 points down from one player.

If he scored a couple more points this week & 3 games ago (5 in total) he would‘ve been highest points player 3 weeks on the bounce!

There is no injury, it is just part of his return process and he will be ready to face Everton on Saturday.
