Lateriser 12 Lateriser 12

Gameweek 24 looks set to be a popular window to play the Wildcard – but in this article, three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser explains why he’ll ultimately hold it until later.

FPL 2025/26 first draft team reveals: Triple Forest, Everton + Chelsea

We are in a grey area right now, which makes it difficult to commit. We have no option but to keep prodding on, as is.

No, I’m not talking about a complicated romantic relationship, but the decision about how to currently use the transfers and chips of our FPL teams.

It’s that time of the year when we grab a pen and paper to begin thinking outside of just what the next six-to-seven Gameweeks look like.

Predicting the Blanks and Doubles

Firstly, I’d advise watching this video from my pod partner, and fellow Pro Pundit, Pras. It’s where he discusses what the end of this season will look like for Blank and Double Gameweeks. Based on usual trends, the assumption is this:

  • A possible Double Gameweek 26 or 27 for Arsenal and Wolverhampton Wanderers
  • Four teams will get a Blank Gameweek 31, due to the EFL Cup final
  • Double Gameweek 33
  • Blank Gameweek 34, for FA Cup semi-finalists and their scheduled league opponents
  • Double Gameweek 36

Ideally, those happy with their current squad could dead-end their team into Blank Gameweek 31, selling some Manchester City and Arsenal players (should they make the EFL Cup final). Then, a Gameweek 32 Wildcard that knows the full picture, helping maximise the later Free Hit, Bench Boost and Triple Captain chips.

Wildcard sooner?

That said, there is a sharp Gameweek 24 fixture swing for some teams, fitting well with a possible Wildcard activation.

The Fixture Ticker says Chelsea, Manchester United, Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Bournemouth have a positive run from Gameweek 24, making it a good time to stock up on their players.

You could jump onto some of those teams even now, but this is where the grey area comes in. At Chelsea, for example, new head coach Liam Rosenior is only just getting equipped with his “man” and “age” philosophies.

Additionally, the Blues have had a fair share of injuries and illnesses. So we simply haven’t seen clues about his favourite XI, or attitudes towards rotation. After all, one reason for Enzo Maresca’s dismissal was his refusal to listen to medical staff and the subsequent overplaying of certain individuals.

Everyone and their grandmother has their eyes on Chelsea’s run from Gameweeks 24 to 27, versus West Ham United, Wolves, Leeds United and Burnley. Yet these are surrounded by important matches in other competitions, making things complicated.

Thinking positively, they have four runouts between now and then. Hopefully, we can get an idea about which first-choice names to target.

Current thoughts

I’m currently sitting outside FPL’s top one million after a brutal bunch of Gameweeks, and I wonder if an early, aggressive Wildcard will help my season. However, after thinking about it, I realised that given how I like to play FPL, it might actually make me not enjoy the end of this season.

Wildcarding soon means playing later weeks like a chess puzzle. Future moves would be dictated by Player X having a Double here and a Blank there, needing the right amount of players for Blank Gameweek 31, hence owning two players from Team Y. You get the picture.

I’d have to be very disciplined at such a chaotic time, which isn’t enjoyable. I like to jump on a player when I see something and sometimes make slightly risky moves. Or, at the very least, have the option to do so.

A couple of seasons ago, my biggest gripe was that 75 per cent of teams and players targeted in that final third were being decided by the sheer nature of Blanks and Doubles, so I just felt very chained and restricted.

Knowing how I derive fun from this game – backing some picks and making moves now based on what I see – I can play a little more freely, knowing there’ll be a Wildcard in my back pocket. It’d be a ‘get out of jail’ card, in case my team becomes rubbish.

Otherwise, I will try to activate it in Gamweek 32, a time when having more information makes it very powerful.

Gameweek 22 Thoughts

As for now, my current midfield features Matheus Cunha (£8.1m), Anthony Gordon (£7.5m), Bukayo Saka (£10.2m) and Phil Foden (£8.7m). I’m worried about the latter two’s minutes in the near future, given the squad competition at Arsenal and Man City.

When it comes to Man United, there’s uncertainty over how Michael Carrick will set the team up. Perhaps Cunha turns out to be a good pick, but his next two fixtures aren’t great, giving me a slight temptation to move for Morgan Rogers (£7.7m). The in-form Aston Villa attacker is taking more shots than before, has good fixtures until Gameweek 31, and has some ‘big dog energy’ right now.

Rogers, Bruno Fernandes (£9.1m) and Harry Wilson (£5.9m) are good, safe bets to make at the moment, but there’s also Chelsea midfielders and possibly Antoine Semenyo (£7.6m) on the radar.

Do we roll our precious transfers over and keep the powder dry? Or jump on picks with a good entry point, like Rogers? That’s the question I’m facing at the moment, and the answer is…. well, a bit of a grey area.

One thing is certain, though. If you’re planning to Wildcard in Gamweek 24, it might be worth accumulating transfers before then, knowing they get carried beyond such activation. Because approaching a Wildcard with saved-up transfers is a lot more potent.

On that note, at least get to chalking your path. But the upcoming midfield reshuffle is going to be rather interesting once we get some valuable insight.

Good luck!

Thoughts on Conor Gallagher at 5.5m?
Could he be a def-con and set piece machine despite Tottenham's form?

I'm gonna take lateriser on here...

    The case for WC24

I'm gonna stick my neck out here and say that I think 90% of FPL teams' best move is to WC24. Here are the reasons.

    1. Big fixture swing. This is the main reason. United get past their next two difficult games. Chelsea embark on the best run of 4 games you basically could have this year. And you have two weeks to prepare ahead of then to assess how both of these respective teams navigate their new manager. Fernandes is an obvious buy on a WC24.
    2. Arsenal triple. Most of our teams have a mismatch of Arsenal assets owing to the defender injuries. It's a great time to buy your 3 Arsenal for the season and the entry is good here. The sooner you set these up long term the better imo.
    3. City/Semenyo. These next two weeks are great to observe the likes of Foden/Semenyo/Cherki. If you have Foden, keep him for the next two and then you can pivot to the most promising one in GW24 or go without altogether since the fixtures are tot liv in 24/25.
    4. Liverpool now. If you WC in 24, you open the opportunity now to punt on Liverpool. The fixtures for 22/23 are BUR bou. Amazing to attack. I have Ekitike and Wirtz who I don't want beyond that but I can get their points now until WC24 and maybe keep if they are doing well.
    5. January window is just about closed. It's unlikely there are gonna be more big moves but by GW24, the last day is Jan 31 which means you'll know more or less who will end up where and can adjust accordingly.
    5. You can roll transfers to stay ahead. The way this season has worked with few DGWs and lots of incentive to roll transfers means the sooner you WC and build a core that lasts, the better. The best chip plan in the first half was to WC4, BB5 and TC6. Saving the WC just means you're forced to use transfers in the interim to juggle long/short term options with the likes of Gordon, Rogers, Wilson etc until you inevitably grow sick of how far behind you've become and hit the WC a few weeks after. I'm gonna bank that having a clear plan starting now (Liverpool now, WC24, roll transfers for later) will be a better approach.

Unless your team already has the perfect triple Arsenal, a route to Fernandes and an optimal structure, I really think most managers' best line of play is to WC in 24 given the information we have now. I've seen WC32s but I just don't see it being more effective than in 24 with the swings and knowledge we'll pick up between now and then. All you'll lose is time that you could be putting out the highest EV team good planning can offer.

There I've said my piece and I'm committed to it now. Cunha > Wirtz for me this week. Roll next week if possible, WC in 24 and take 3 transfers forward.

I've actually wildcarded this week predominantly for the reasons you have stated. I was one of the lucky ones benefitting from GW4 WC.
If Fernandes or Semenyo start firing now, they'll rocket in price, and the current owners could lose 0.2m each on Foden, Cunha etc.
My only issue now is which Chelsea players to pick. To be honest, you could argue none of the are worth it, because of rotation and the new defensive structure which could take over a month to sink in - after the easy fixtures. One player who I actually think is going under the radar is, funnily enough, Joao Pedro. Tempted to pick him over Thiago tbh.

For me, I need the two weeks clarity on United, Chelsea and City.

WC'ing this week I'd only recommend if you somehow have 1 or 0 Arsenal and some red flags that mean you're struggling to field a side. You'd have to gamble a little on which Chelsea but it's doable.

Thanks for taking the time to post all that, wish there was more of that and less of A or B.
The way I see it, the one big benefit of WC 24 is that it allows you to restructure your team and fit Palmer in without any major compromise. The others are easily accessible via FT (Cunha and Foden to Enzo and Bruno are obvious moves). Will Palmer be worth it? It remains to be seen it.

      90%?

      So you're in.

A wildcard is best saved for when your team is in dissaray with red flags and players dropped etc.

That and chip usage for a BB, dgw etc.

FH to navigate the big blank.

TC when you want, but into a dgw second half of the season.

These things are held to be true. Not immutable, but close.

I don't agree with the WC being used only when your team is in disarray. A proactive WC ahead of fixture swings can be one of the best moves. It allows you to gain team value, it allows you to roll transfers to stay ahead. This season in particular because of the lack of DGWs, the ability to roll to 5 transfers, I think getting ahead by picking the best assets while others know they're good but can't move for all of them because they want to transition slowly with FTs, is advantageous.

Its very easy to set up your team to achieve all of those things without WC

United - Bruno is enough and entry point doesnt matter for him.
Its easy to get a Chelsea player or 2 the next few GWs and be all set for their fixture swing. They have good fixtures from 22 so its not like 24 is the swing week.
Everyone already has Arsenal triple. Spending WC to shuffle around players in a team you already own 3 players from seems a waste.
Liverpool - this is a good point IF you dont have any Liverpool but many have Ekitike and they arent good enough to warrant a big switch of players just because of Bur/bou

I'd counter with the fact that you're never that far away from an optimal team if you're an engaged manager anyway therefore the WC is overvalued this season. The WC isn't gonna magically be way more effective later and the sooner you can move to an optimal setup the more you can take a lead and it's easier to maintain a lead than it is to claw one back in this game because of the nature of EO and price rises.

I think we're past the stage now where we don't know which teams are good. That's one of the main reasons you'd hold off on an early WC. But we're halfway through the season now. We know which teams are good. We know the teams to target are Wolves, Burnley and West Ham. We know that Arsenal and City are gonna finish top two. That United attack is decent especially with rest. That Villa and Chelsea will be up there.

Bit of a quandary with this lot
              Pickford
              O'Reilly Gabriel Van Hecke
              Foden Rice Wilson Gordon
              Haaland Thiago Ekitike
              (Dub Cunha VDB Keane)

Already used my one FT rage transferring Bowen > Thiago
Had a plan in place to do Cunha > Enzo for a hit, then next week Keane > Alderete & then Foden & VDB > Bruno & Munoz in 24/25
Doesn't seem right hitting out a player I'm benching anyway, but it's a hit I'll be taking at some point anyway

              1. Carry on with plan A, do Cunha > Enzo & bench someone else?
              2. Just hold off for a week, swallow the price rises and play the above team?
              3. Bring forward next weeks transfer instead and bring in Alderete to play over O'Reilly?

Not feeling the urge to go all in on Chelsea, and holding off the 3rd Arse until I know if they double in 26 or not.

Any advice that doesn't include WC gratefully received.
