Arsenal couldn’t fully capitalise on Manchester City’s slip-up earlier in the day, drawing a blank at Nottingham Forest.

Here are our Scout Notes from the City Ground.

ARTETA ON WHY HE BENCHED SAKA

A second benching in three Gameweeks saw Bukayo Saka (£10.1m) reduced to little more than half an hour in the late kick-off.

It looked like more of the dreaded minute management but Mikel Arteta did suggest the winger had a “niggle” going into Gameweek 22.

“Bukayo had a lot of minutes and he had a niggle before the game, so we need to manage our players. We have some fantastic players that can provide different things and we did try it from the beginning, we tried after half-time as well, taking more risks and bringing in even more players in those attacking options. We tried in every way and it wasn’t enough, unfortunately.” – Mikel Arteta

The hope now is that Saka gets the next two mostly meaningless Champions League ties off (Arsenal are 99.9% qualified for the knockout rounds), although there is a Tuesday-Sunday turnaround if he does start in the San Siro this week.

Saka very nearly capped off his cameo with an unlikely goal at Forest: a header that Matz Sels (£4.6m) did very well to claw away.

RICE HEAVILY INVOLVED

A lot of the talk around Declan Rice (£7.4m) this season – particularly from salty non-owners – has been the ‘unsustainability’ of his attacking returns and how fortunate he’s been.

But Saturday was a Rice hard-luck story.

The midfielder was at the heart of most of what Arsenal did well in a generally sub-par collective performance.

It was Rice who delivered the cross for Saka’s aforementioned chance, and it was Rice who sent a teasing ball in for Mikel Merino (£5.6m) to nod wide from six yards. FPL’s top-scoring midfielder, doing quite a bit of box crashing himself (often without being found), was also a stud’s width or two from converting Ben White‘s (£5.1m) delivery. Rice later tested Sels from a Saka cross.

Plenty of encouragement, despite the blank.

GABRIEL’S PHENOMENAL RUN – AND WHY DON’T WE CAPTAIN HIM?

Arsenal’s attack underwhelmed on Saturday but they still could have easily come away with three points. Aside from the chances we’ve already discussed, Gabriel Martinelli (£6.8m) missed a sitter from close range and Viktor Gyokeres (£8.7m) should have done better when allowing Murillo (£5.2m) to recover and close down his breakaway chance.

The Gunners’ defence was on point again, though. Having Gabriel Magalhaes (£6.8m) back brings a sense of calm that perhaps wasn’t there when he was out.

Over the course of the season, the Gunners have remarkably conceded less than 1.0 xG in 18 of their 22 matches. On Saturday, Forest had just one shot in the box – and that was quickly shut down and blocked by Rice.

The turn of the New Year has been significant as Gabriel has now gone above Erling Haaland (£15.1m), and everyone else of note, for points per start (7.9 v 7.5):

Gabriel has also got a markedly lower blank starting blank rate (sBln, above) than Haaland: the Brazilian stopper has delivered fewer than six points in just three of his 15 starts in 2025/26.

It begs the question of why Gabriel isn’t in the captaincy conversation more. It’s maybe just the unshakeable glass-half-empty mentality with defenders: just as a forward can haul despite otherwise being anonymous, a defender can excel for 89 minutes and have their return wiped out by a freak goal or wonderstrike.

ANDERSON’S DEFCON STREAK GOES ON

We wrote a few weeks ago that basic individual errors were masking some pretty good underlying defensive numbers from Nottingham Forest.

Since Sean Dyche took over, the Tricky Trees are fifth in the Premier League table for lowest expected goals conceded (xGC).

Further helping their cause is the return of Ola Aina (£4.7m), meaning no more runouts for the dodgy Nicolo Savona (£4.5m) or Oleksandr Zinchenko (£4.9m).

Not only that but Ibrahima Sangare (£4.9m) is back from AFCON. In the Dyche era, it’s four clean sheets in seven matches with Sangare in the side – and none from seven when he’s not starting.

Sangare also seems to bring the best out of Elliot Anderson (£5.3m), who looked back in the groove on Saturday.

Anderson made it six straight DefCon returns, and 15 in his last 19, against the Gunners:

Had DefCon not been in place in 2025/26, Anderson would have blanked in 18 of his 22 starts. As it stands now, though, he’s a dizzying 12th in the midfielders’ points table.

Who would you bench this week for him?

Some very interesting sBin data. Gabriel has only blanked 3 times per start. Haaland 9 times. Haaland keeps letting everyone down as a captain and it may only take a few more blanks until people feel that the Haaland from last season is back and they start scrambling around for another captain.

    Raya, Dubravka
    Gabriel, Thiaw, Andersen, Dorgu, Gudmundsson
    Saka, Foden, Gordon, Rogers, Miley
    Haaaland, Ekitike, Thiago

    Time to get Bruno F?:

    a) Miley, Ekitike-->Bruno F, Guiu (3-5-2)
    b) Foden-->Bruno F and Rogers -->Enzo (other 6,8 mid)
    c) Foden-->Bruno F and Gordon -->Enzo ((other 6,8 mid)

The second time this season that I avoid putting the armband on Haaland in the early game, him then blanking only for my captain (Ekitike) to also blank. Impossible to make any ground this season.

Just when it looks an opportunity to start going against Haaland and open up the captaincy, City play Wolves at home and then Spurs away.

Yeah, my VC has matched or bettered Haaland the last few weeks and was prepared to make Gabriel captain even before this article (was VC the last couple of weeks). But fixtures dictate that it'll be Haaland© most probably again this week.

      Yeah

Its been tricky because we only look at other premiums/semi premiums and they've all had generational stinkers. I'm sure people who went for Thiago in some of his games did nicely

    Raya Dubravka
    Timber Lacroix OReilly Hall Gudmondsen
    Rogers Wirtz Foden Wilson KDH
    Haaland Thiago Ekitike

Do you think its time to wildcard? I think almost the entire back line is a problem, I dont have Gabriel, Foden and KDH injured, Ekitike a waste of funds.

Original plan was to wait till 24, so I could have three City v Wolves, get Bruno, and load up on Chelsea. But its even possible that none of these players play against Wolves!

I wouldn't WC. Take a -4 to get rid of NOR (for Gab) and Foden if he's out. Eki out next week

I can't see a WC being hugely different from what you have right now... would you be able to drop Raya to Sanchez to get Foden to Bruno for instance in two moves?

Thanks both. Forgot to mention I have 2FT and £0.6m in the bank. Annoyingly I cant do Foden to Bruno in one move after last night. Plan was to wildcard with 2 or 3 transfers then get up to 5.

I like the sound of both suggestions actually!

Keep eye on press releases with Guehi could be makes Manchester City debut
against Wolves instead of Lacroix - bombshell with Oliver Glasnar announced leaving
Crystal Palace plus criticism of board I feel will not be at Palace for next game

Foden to Bruno - seeing you have 2ft will depend on achieving your goals & how your current FPL season going -
WC an option but would need to get away with some different players to template

2 FT and 0.8 ITB. Really don't think Pool assets are worth holding for Bou. They are rubbish

    A - Szob & Eki > BrunoF & Kroupi (bench DCL)
    B - Szob > Wilson and roll 1

    Pickford
    Gabriel - Timber - Andersen
    Foden - Szob - BrunoG - Rice
    Haaland - Ekitike - DCL

    Dubravka - Cunha - Guddy - Dorgu

It boils down to whether United can replicate that level of performance and desire at the Emirates. A Bruno return wouldn't be a big surprise and I want him long term and am thinking just get it done now. My main dilemma is who is the best enabler - Wilson, Tav or take -4 to dump Eki and get Enzo

    2. Bluetiger1

Foden might be a bigger issue than Szob - possible keep eye

Keeping Szob for a week and doing Foden & Cunha to Bruno & Enzo is another option I have.

It's not often Foden gets subbed at HT especially in a derby which makes me think there is something in this injured hand thing

No, I think De Ligt will still be first choice when fit. Hard to say with Dalot on form but you imagine Cunha comes back in the XI so Shaw and Dalot fighting for LB seeing as Carrick plays a back 4

I think they will set up similar vs Arsenal as per City. Can’t imagine the game plan will be much different. Against regular opposition I’m pretty confident Cunha starts however so not sure in that instance. Hard to drop Dorgu on form but Shaw played very well and I think is better than Dorgu defensively as part of a back 4. Really we’ve not seen enough of Carrick yet

Dorgu has done well in an attacking role so he will surely get more minutes there's but there's also bound to be a lot of rotation. They have Mbeumo, Amad, Cunha, Mount, Dorgu all vying for 2 spots. Some times Mbeumo/Cunha will play striker which eases some of the competition on the wide positions but Sesko will be getting minutes too which pushes boomo wide

£1.6m banked, 1 FT. What to do with this lot?

Upgrade Heaven to another defender, ideally someone rotating and playing at home when Sunderland are away?

Or upgrade Guiu to a playing sub, to strengthen the bench?

Deal with Ekitike, and potentially Saka, in a week or so?

Gabriel Chalabah Van Hecke Mukiele Heaven

    Haaland Ekitiké Guiu

I'm not sure I can go to Pedro

I had him last season and knew it was a mistake as soon as I confirmed the transfer.

I should have not written Sanchez off and maybe gone double defence.

Enzo or Neto probably the two I'm looking at.

Perhaps Guiu out for Junior Kroupi from Gw24 is the way to play it?

Not sure what to do with Ekitike. Probably just hold for now.

      Nice balance squad.

Saka (10.1m) 99 pts - possible to another midfielder & get
      J Timber (6.3m ) 109 pts - as your extra Arsenal (3rd player)

In respect of Heaven & Guiu I would possible go for Heaven first.
      a. Heaven (3.9m) could go to Guehi (5.3m) could get Manchester City Debut this weekend
      b. M Guiu (4.2m) could go KroupiJr (4.6m)

        just now

        That's a good idea actually

I've got £5.4m to spend in defence.

Could play 4 at the back.

Albeit, besides Gw23 and 26 Man City fixtures don't shout clean sheets until Gw29.

Unless Guéhi fixes them right away?

I've just pivoted out of a double Arsenal defence by selling Raya so will monitor Saka for a bit.

Since being hammered by United, Wolves have definitely tightened up at the back. City/Haaland could be frustrated.

Its last season again. Can't defend, can't progress the ball. Haaland could genuinely be a sell after Wolves

Just stop capping him. No point selling with how easy it is to afford whoever you want

Haaland to Watkins in gw24 is tempting

      Wolves are much better.

Unfortunately their fixtures are an avoid but Mane might carry on regardless.

Yeah they tightened, but it's not like they're suddenly the best defence in the league.

Damn, took my eye off the ball with price changes last night and now 0.1 off doing Cunha to Bruno F in 1 move.

Would a hit be worth doing
Cunha, Keane, Raya to Bruno F, Chalobah, Kelleher?

One of your players might get clobbered today or in mid week matches.

Saturday night price rises are best ignored.

Wished I’d of used w/c this week instead of waiting till 24

On paper team looked ok with some ok fixtures
Donny foden haaland vdv vvd etc
16 pts with 4 to go
Most ml rivals on 30+ pts same number to go

Would of had double ars def, Chel def palmer Bruno etc

Only 1 ft to sort it out, or just w/c ?

looking at the chat on the forum a lot of people mentioned WC 24 any reason?

        Think fixture swings

Ml rival did it this week, double ars and Chel def
Palmer Bruno in, wasn’t put off by Bruno v city or ars as lot will get him for 24 cost more by then

Got rid of foden oreily Vvd etc, got away with it

He’s already outscored his old team, got price rises, team looks good going forward, fair play to him

It's a bit tricky with fixtures short term as a number of teams have double away games or home games and their pattern switches.

Bournemouth have been much better at home and their away fixtures are decent. Are they a team worth buying into?

Chelsea the other obvious team with decent fixtures.

Fulham are a form team but their defence isn't really getting points.

Are Forest really an option, in defence?

Or players like Collins at Brentford if looking at new defenders?

It will probably end up being a week to roll as it's much clearer after Gw22 for various replacement players.

Tavernier and Enzo great options for the upcoming fixtures. Andersen (FUL) is a good option as well (great defcon potential). Anderson too obviously. Collins also good option but some rotation needed probably.

        Cheers

I should probably get on board with Anderson as the 7/8th set and forget player. Guess you start him rather than first sub in that case.

I also need to filter by DCs for a defender which likely rules out a Man City option as they often dominate the ball.

Did yesterday before price changes Saka+Foden to BrunoF+Rice, any idea to do Rogers+Dalot to Palmer+Dorgu for free, leaves 0,0 ITB, had initially 4FT
