The first Digest of the season finds us purring over Chelsea’s new Belgian, throwing admiring glances in the direction of the Liberty Stadium and daring to question Fantasy royalty…

The Player

Eden Hazard is proving impossible to ignore. His first Premier League from the spot against Newcastle represented a milestone and yet Hazard had already cemented a place on our watchlists with a string of assists amidst two dazzling displays prior to Saturday’s game. Six assists in total have lifted Hazard to the top of the points rankings across the games and have left us in little doubt that the Belgian is a rare talent with Fantasy points simply spilling from him.

Hazard always had the potential to establish himself as a Fantasy darling. He arrived at Stamford Bridge off the back of a season for Lille which had seem him fetch 20 goals and 15 assists; clearly that signposted him as a player who could deliver returns on all fronts.

Few will have anticipated the impact that Hazard has made, however. So much is made of the pace and power of the Premier League and yet Hazard’s transition from Ligue 1 has been seamless – his productivity in England similarly spectacular.

Despite facing a blank in Gameweek 3, Hazard goes on attracting new suitors – Fantasy managers intent on benching their new capture, rather than risk his price escalating beyond affordable levels. Those without Hazard at this moment in time will be looking at their budget with some concern, knowing full well that he has become the first player to emerge as an “essential”.

While Fernando Torres does all he can to present an alternative option amongst Chelsea’s new attacking verve, Hazard looks to be the real prize, freeing up a precious forward slot in the process.

The Team

Eight goals scored, none conceded. Against that backdrop, Michael Laudrup’s Swansea are maintaining their expansive football of last season and have added a cutting edge. The goals are flowing at one end, while Michel Vorm remains a formidable barrier in front of a settled and assured back four at the other.

Laudrup’s side have surprised me. I saw a transition phase, a period of settling in while Laudrup’s new signings gelled and the hangover from the departure of Joe Allen and Gylfi Sigurdsson subsided. Neither have surfaced; instead Laudrup appears to have injected new spirit and conjured tactical tweaks that have allowed both Nathan Dyer and Wayne Routledge to become key figures, rather than peripheral touchline huggers.

Elsewhere, Angel Rangel scored his first Premier League goal on Saturday, helping him to the top scoring mantle in the Gameweek. A polished and skillful full-back, we’ve long backed his potential as a Fantasy asset and the weekend showing may well, at last, be evidence of that materialising. Again, we perhaps only have to look to the belief and systems implemented by Laudrup to find the catalyst for such an upturn.

The Talking Point

It’s ironic that, over the past twelve months, Robin Van Persie has presented Fantasy managers with security, an assurance that, above all others, he’s the best source of returns in a given Gameweek. And yet, Saturday’s first start in United colours, capped by his fine strike after just 10 minutes, has now created uncertainty and insecurity. Fantasy managers will be processing their thoughts, pondering if they can afford to get him or, indeed, afford to be without him.

Van Persie’s price tag is, without question, inflated to the extent that his value – points per million – is a concern. Personally I’ve no argument that Van Persie is overpriced given that his chances of replicating the form that earned him such a price tag look remote.

Having said that, the true value of Van Persie is that he solves the Captaincy conundrum week after week. Certainly, looking at Gameweek 3 ahead, with Chelsea’s Hazard and Torres out of the equation, Van Persie’s appeal and potential impact as an unlikely differential captain, is strong.

Thankfully, for those looking to bide their time, Carlos Tevez has the fixture and the form to present a solution but Van Persie proved last season that his return rate away from home can surpass all others – even an in-form Tevez. That consideration, together with the fact that Van Persie will likely assume spot-kick duties with Wayne Rooney sidelined, could well tip the balance. Indeed, those questioning the merits of Van Persie only have to ponder just how many of those with Wildcards active are set to go forward without the United striker. We’d wager not too many.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Also, for as good as Hazard is - is he as 'essential' as Michu?

Just looking at their points totals so far:

    Hazard - 34
    Michu - 28

Hazard has played 1 extra game (and has had a kind run of fixtures - Wigan + Reading) and has taken a penalty (which he isn't taking if Lampard is on the pitch). Yet he's only scored 6pts more and costs close to £10m.

If Michu gets an assist + CS next game (SUN) then he'll match Hazard's total. A goal and he'll overtake it.

Of course both could be considered essential - the point is just that Hazard isn't *so* far and away above every one else. And it doesn't take 6 assists or whatever for Bale and Silva and others to start looking like contenders to that spot - they just have to match Michu's 2 goals in a game, then 1 goal.

Is that so hard to imagine? Is that more or less sustainable than 6 assists? All things to consider.

Maybe but also factor in that Chelsea will score alot more goals than Swansea this season and did you see two of Michu's 3 goals, he was gifted them.

What I'm trying to say isn't that Michu will continue getting those kinds of returns just that he makes Hazard look more 'normal'.

Sometimes I think about Hazard as getting his 6 assists and 1 goal and it seems like no other midfielder could approach that. But when you look at the actual points total over 3 games, it's not that crazy.

I can definitely see someone like Dempsey or Bale getting 3 goals over a spread of 2 games more than I can see Hazard returning 6 assists + 1 goal with any consistency. Of course he could start scoring more goals himself to compensate. It just still feels like it's all up in the air in the expensive midfielder bracket, and I think he'll be in the Top 3 this year - I just don't think he'll have a 80pt lead out in front like he gets talked about sometimes now.

Loads of players have a "good run", very few maintain it over long periods. RVP last year and Ronaldo of old have both got well over 200 points, they're the exception rather than the rule - Hazard will have his share of 2-pointers as will Michu. The scoring is wide-open this year so far, goals are being scored for fun - it will likely quieten down at some point...

    Huge problem right now,
    team is
    Jaaskalinen/ (cech)
    Kompany/Heitinga/Coloccini/Cameron/(Bertrand)
    Kagawa/Nolan/Michu/Bale(Ramsey)
    Graham/Tevez/(Torres)
Want to get hazard for Bale at end of gameweek, but his price keeps rising, do i make the change and play ramsey (who i also want to get rid of soon)
Cameron could provide people with good bargain fantasy options, think he will be a guaranteed starter, with a long throw as well and will be a key man on all set pieces playing as a centre midfielder.
At 4.5 million and with stoke having a good record at keeping clean sheets he could be useful. Never known Pulis ever to hand someone a debut and play them for the full 90 before, very good tackler of the ball, and very much a Pulis player. The only downside is the unfavourable fixtures for the next couple of gameweeks however when Torres is back i will be playing 3 at the back most weeks.

Problem is though hazard for bale now while i can afford???

Feels crazy to consider getting rid of Bale when he has a home game against Norwich, and Hazard has no game, and im considering playing Ramsey who at this moment in time seems like a nailed on 1 point while he keeps coming from the bench.

The WC thing is an issue, because people are doing it and bringing in Hazard, his price will not stop rising, and soon he will be inaffordable, The best thing ever would be for him to get injured in the super cup for a few weeks then we may get back to normal
Everyone in my mini League now has him as well

I wouldn't swap out Bale. TOT have a terrific schedule ahead and Bale has been a great FF asset historically and has good numbers so far this year (check the Member section). Yes, Hazard has been fantastic but he is not going to get 40 assists this year. You've got Torres, and Hazard assists will often mean Torres goals. Good thoughts on Cameron. He looks like a Pulis player.

I'd be more worried about Heitinga's minutes than Bale/Hazard.

If they're long term options at this stage of the season it's well worth considering a hit. The extra millions that you amass over the season can make a big difference at the end, giving you the freedom to bring in all the big hitters when double gameweeks start coming thick and fast..

If I drop him now then I will only get half of his future price rises, if I keep him, I will get the first £0.3m in full. Like Tevez and RVP this week as 'safer' options as we are still yet to see Spurs actually score a few. That said - I like it. Adebayor provides so much more than Defoe in every facet of the game, and Defoe is definitely not a striker suited to a 4-3-3/4-5-1. Cant see Spurs not improving, but it eould be nice if they didnt.

I'm thinking that Ade can create the space for Bale to destroy Norwich. Tevez is definitely the safer option as most of my rivals will (c) him, and although I will probably err on the side of caution.. could be a great call.

Thinking of going with the following for GW3:

    Vorm (Federici)
    Lescott, Hangeland, Rangel (Barnett) (O’Brien)
Noble, Yaya Toure, Kagawa, Michu, Fellaini
    Tevez, RVP (Pog)

Pretty happy so far with how things have panned out so far except for benching Dyer in GW1 then having injuries for Rio Aguero then Rooney ..... really think this season will be a bumper score for the overall winner this season if it carries on like it has .
So far leading my works League in FPL by quite a bit 🙂

You'd imagine Rafael will have more competition once Jones and Smalling are fit. Johnny Evans will tighten things up at the back for United. He was on the bench on Saturday wasn't he? He should be back in the side this week.

Gibbs will be in the side as long as he keeps playing well. No reason why he won't start every game when he's fit.

So short-term, Rafael looks the best option, but in the long run, it may well be Gibbs.

EXPERT OPINION PLEASE: Aguero has now dropped £0.3m, having not dropped him, what is wise to do? If I drop him now then I will only get half of his future price rises, if I keep him, I will get the first £0.3m in full. Assuming he only misses one more GW, is he worth just sticking with, or by the end of the break will he have dropped significantly more? Help pretty please!!

In one sense it doesn't matter how far his price drops if you always intend to get him straight back in when fit again. The only reason to sell and buy back is therefore to earn team value (relative to someone who's kept Aguero throughout), rather than avoid losing it. That's the way I see it, anyway.

    hangeland kaboul clyne gorkss cole
    nasri valencia michu ramires tarabt

Have 2Ft and 0m. so thinking of doing the following:
A: cole, tarabt, ramires >>>> rangel, lennon, and any mid upto 5.7
B: cole, podolski, ramires >>> rangel, petric, and any mid upto 9

both scenarios above would leave me cash in the bank to do nasri to hazard in gw4.

There's a cap of 3 rises per Gw. Even if a player crosses the threshold NTI for a 4th time in that week, all those get rolled over - like it happened with Michu this week.

Swansea vs Sunderland is one to watch. Sunderland are strong at the back. This will be the first decent defence Swansea have come up against this season. Personally I think Swansea could beat any team at home so I fancy them to score 1 or 2 in this game.
