It hasn’t been the best of starts for Aston Villa. Having watched his team score once in the first two Gameweeks, Paul Lambert boosted his options up front by snapping up Christian Benteke from Belgian side Genk prior to this summer’s transfer deadline. The 21-year-old, who moves to the midlands on a four-year contract for a fee in the region of £7m, is Lambert’s eighth signing since taking over the reins this summer:

Benteke continues Lambert’s recent policy of acquiring younger players from lower leagues or abroad, with a deliberate decision to mainly choose ambition over experience when restructuring his side. The Villa boss sang the praises of his new signing and revealed he expects the youngster to have a real impact up front this term:

Christian is only 21 years of age but already he’s an established Belgian international and he’s had a terrific time at Genk. He’s something very different to what we have here and that added dimension will enhance the football club. A young lad he may be, but he’s definitely a handful. He’s tall, powerful, he has pace and we’ll be stronger with him in the side.

The Statistics

The young Belgian’s career began in his native country at Gent where, as a 17-year-old, he made seven appearances in the 2007-08 season. Benteke then moved to Standard Liege, scoring three goals and providing a couple of assists in nine games before being loaned out to KV Kortrijk midway through the campaign.

Over a couple of seasons he scored 13 goals and provided seven assists in 32 appearances, but Benteke failed to settle upon returning to his parent club; Liege farmed him out to Mechelin in 2010-11 before finally selling him back to Genk before the start of last season. Finally handed a chance to nail down a regular role, Benteke delivered. Returning 10 goals and four assists from 22 appearances in his first season, he continued his storming form earlier this term, with three goals and an assist in five games before Lambert came calling.

The Prospects

Standing six foot five tall, Benteke offers the midlands outfit an extra edge up front, with a raw, physical presence that is sure to unsettle many a Premier League centre-half. He could be just the ally Darren Bent needs to spark his lacklustre season into life – with Lambert utilising Benteke in a similar way to Grant Holt for Norwich last season, Bent will be looking to feed off knock-downs and grab the goals to fire Villa up the table.

Certainly, Lambert’s selection policy so far bodes well for Benteke. Summer signings such as Matt Lowton, Ron Vlaar and Karim El Ahmadi have all started every match and with Nathan Delfouneso loaned out to Blackpool for the season, options up front are minimal – Benteke could well be ahead of Andreas Weimann and Gabby Agbonlahor in the pecking order as Bent’s partner, with plenty of starts looking likely if Lambert continues with a 4-4-2. Service from the flanks will be vital – the likes of Barry Bannan, Brett Holman or Charles N’Zogbia will be tasked with delivering plenty crosses for the new boy to feed upon; Benteke’s aerial ability could perhaps boost their assist potential.

Priced at 6.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 7.5 in the Sky Sports game, Benteke’s mid-price appeal is unlikely to pick up many suitors just yet. With a point, two goals and no clean sheets from their first three, it’s understandable that faith in Villa’s Fantasy assets is currently faltering. The next six Gameweeks, however, sees the midlands outfit welcome (SWA, WBA, NOR) to Villa Park and with a trip to Southampton also on their short-term agenda, Lambert’s side are afforded a strong opportunity to quickly turn their season around.

        I think that's a bit harsh.

Fletcher, HBA and Gorkss aren't exactly vanilla.

That said there aren't any surprising picks, and I'm not really interested in checking out if that rotation works - so its a solid, uninspiring pick.

Seeing as you're an Arsenal fan - no love for Santi?

I quite like your Yaya/HBA double pick - but I'm interested in Santi over one of them (I'd downgrade Fletcher and Ivanovic to make the cash).

REPOST for Mark (posted on last article after this one came out)

I daresay it’s not a new request but is there any chance of fixing a few things in the inline search box in the comparison tool:

    i) Make it disregard diacritics (i.e. so that “Tevez” matches “Tévez”, “Aguero” matches “Agüero” etc). Easy fix for that might be to change the spellings in the database but maybe that would mess with importing Opta stats or something

ii) Remove the duplicate entries e.g. there are two players called Samir Nasri

iii) Make it so it matches first name as well as last name. Often catches me out.

Note that this doesn’t mean I don’t love the comparison tool. Best thing about being a member, IMO

first price i looked for. it's not just pens, he takes corners and free kicks too. still some debate whether gomez is ahead of him for pens but the beauty here is it's maloney who keeps gomez out the side.
to compare him to noble for example, i'd get maloney even without pens, you'd never touch noble without pens, 3 games 0 shots so far

But there are 3 big forwards (i.e. no cheap forwards), you can't look at your forwards/mids independently - it's effectively 8 players, pick 7.

IMO Maloney and Guthrie are the best cheap players if you are going this way. Both playing fairly advanced and rotate in terms of fixture difficulty (not home and away). IMO doing Hangeland + Jelavic ----> Hughes and Ba can give you a bit of cash to get 6M mid for El Ahmadi giving team bit more balance.

would you prefer one of them plus Lambert over Jelavic?

because you have to have 2 'small' picks in the mid/fwd line - it only looks bad because I haven't gone RvP/Tevez/(Lambert/Petric/Graham) with 4 big/medium mids.

I have been watching him you cheeky little monkey. I'm not impressed with many full-backs in the modern game as most of them just want to push forward and get on the ball and they half ass the defensive side of the game alot. He is far from awesome at RB but I don't think he is a liability at the back by any means and his FF genius means that all is forgiven in that Department. 🙂

    Swansea assets alert!

Swansea's good fixtures since the start of the season, together with their good form, have prompted much investment in FPL...Michu, Dyer, Graham, Vorm, Williams, Rangel...I bet most people have got a couple in their teams.

These favourable fixtures continue for the next 5 GW's, so no immediate panic, but after that (from GW 9) their fixtures turn rather sour...

I'd go with Zab and Demel, unless you hear that Maicon or Richards are gonna start at full back ofc

You said you'll captain Berbatov two days back. Now he's not even in your draft.

i realised that petric will stole a lot of pts from him and i dont wanna have same team as other so i get some differentials

your draft is basicly copied generic WC draft....

But surely if you already know a player will score twice, with added bps, you would just captain him first.

Did anyone watching the England game last night notice how Gerrard was announced as sponsors' MOTM then was quickly changed to Lamps after he was sent off 😀

    Sun Dreamteam,

    Couple of transfers for this:

    Krul
    Vermaelen Vertonghen Baines Agger
    Cazorla Hazard Yaya Pienaar
    Tevez Torres

Leaves me 1 free transfer. Should I get rid of Krul? Alternatives within budget would be:

    Schwarzer
    Mignolet
    Given
    Begovic
    Foster
    Al-Habsi
    Vorm
    Federici
    Davis
    Ruddy
    Jaaskelainen

Transfers are limited, so it's a long-term pick. Does Vorm, Jaaskelainen, Foster or Schwarzer offer more potential than Krul over the rest of the season?

RVP has been flagged as 50% uncaptainable.

Not really. If he's fit he'll play, if he's not he wont. Very little chance of him coming off the bench imo.

still fine on my screen. Even so I would still captain him. If he goes 50% all the casuals will likely to take it off him, imagine if he plays and gets another hat-trick. Worst case scenario is have a good Vc (mine is Hazard)
