Martin Jol added plenty of experience to his Fulham first-team squad on Tuesday afternoon by snapping up Giorgos Karagounis until the end of the season. Having recently lost the services of Danny Murphy, Clint Dempsey and Moussa Dembele, Jol’s move for the 35-year-old free agent will re-inject some creativity into the Cottagers’ midfield for the campaign ahead:

The Fulham boss was clearly delighted to bring the Greek captain to London after seeing both Dempsey and Dembele depart in a dramatic transfer deadline day. Karagounis joins the likes of Dimitar Berbatov, Hugo Rodallega and Mladen Petric in arriving at the club this summer as Jol goes about the task of restructuring his side:

Giorgos Karagounis has a wealth of club and international experience and I’m happy that he’s joined us for this season. He’s been an influential player for his club sides and is a renowned player in world football as he’s about to become the most-capped player for Greece. He brings many certain qualities to our squad.

The Statistics

Karagounis’ career began in the Panathinaikos youth set-up before he was packed off to Apollon Smyrni as an 18-year-old. Over a couple of seasons, he produced nine goals from 55 appearances before returning to his former club in time for the 1998-99 campaign. Over the next five years, the midfielder became a key member of the side, finding the net 25 times in 118 league games. Karagounis also produced several crucial performances in the Champions League and subsequently caught the eye of Inter Milan- as a result, he moved to Italy in 2003 but his time in Serie A was a major disappointment.

During the course of two seasons the midfielder featured just 31 times and, with 17 of those appearances as a substitute, he failed to produce any attacking returns. The playmaker moved on to Benfica for the next two years, finding the net three times in 45 league matches before he once again found his way back to Panathinaikos. Karagounis remained in his native country for the next five seasons, grabbing 12 goals and 20 assists from 127 league games before the club released him on a free transfer this summer. A wealth of international experience has seen Karagounis turn out 120 times for the Greek national side, finding the net on nine occasions.

The Prospects

Much may depend on how Jol rearranges his system in light of the recent departures. After the closure of the transfer window, the Fulham boss admitted he would look to find the “right balance” after Dembele’s departure left a gaping hole in his first XI. Jol fielded Steve Sidwell alongside Mahamadou Diarra in central midfield in a 4-4-2 formation at West Ham but the 3-0 Upton Park defeat certainly gave him plenty to ponder.

Quite whether Karagounis is ready for immediate action is another matter entirely, though; the player’s last competitive match was at Euro 2012 and he admitted he is still building up his match fitness at the moment, suggesting he could be slowly eased into the first-team fold.

As the season unfolds, though, Sidwell looks the likeliest candidate to make way, with Diarra’s combative nature complementing Karagounis’ ability to dictate play in the middle of the park. Likely to be handed set-piece duties for the Cottagers, his delivery could be a key aspect in how we assess his Fantasy potential, with a price of around 5.0 – 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) the likeliest scenario. The club’s strong home form under Jol is certainly cause for optimism; 36 of their 48 goals last term were scored at the Cottage and with five under their belt in the season opener with Norwich already, the potential for Fantasy returns is obvious.

With (WBA, wig, sot, AVL, rdg) amongst their next six fixtures, the upcoming schedule certainly looks kind for Jol’s side. If Karagounis can quickly settle and establish a regular role under Jol, his eye for a killer pass and superb free-kick delivery could well earn him a place on Fantasy managers’ Watchlists over the next few Gameweeks.

Hey Peoples, my current WC side:

    Foster Begovic

    Baines Boyce Cuellar Demel Davies

    Hazard Cazorla Michu Barfa Guthrie

    RVP Tevez Fletcher

    Selections I'm pondering:

    A. Barfa -> Morrison, Boyce -> Vertonghen
    B. Fletcher -> Berbatov
    C. Fletcher -> Lambert, Barfa -> Yaya, Davies -> Hughes
    D. Leave as it is...

    Thoughts appreciated.

      Of the above, D.

I'd be tempted to do Davies & Fletcher --> Lambert & £4.5-5m defender though.

    RVP injury update

Having just watched the first half of the Hungary/Holland match I feel better positioned to offer a confident appraisal.

The foul on RVP was committed by Juhasz in the 29th minute. (28:37) The defender looms in clumsily from behind, connecting with his right knee around the back of RVP’s left upper leg around the thigh/gluteal area. RVP is braced and leaning slightly back as he takes the impact. This means that it doesn’t take a great deal of force in the impact area (just effective leverage) for the line of gravity to come outside the base of support (a circle around the feet) and for a new base of support to manifest…in this instance RVP’s ass…think back to when someone places their knee at the back of your leg from behind when you’re standing, it usually illicits an amusing ‘flop’ like action as leverage, momentum and gravity work their magic, now think what would happen if you were braced and leaning backwards when this happened. This could be complicated if the boot studs got caught in the ground, which, in this instance, they didn’t. For a pitch-side physio, RVP’s subsequent actions would reveal it to be a fairly innocuous tackle.

Interestingly, RVP, immediately after the tackle, lies prone and totally motion-less. As soon as the whistle blows for a foul, RVP reacts instantly, rolling over and getting to his feet. Tellingly, here, we can clearly see RVP’s facial expression, he exhibits no signs of grimacing or pain and no signs of worry or anxiety. If he was in any pain or injured, he would not be able to hide this in his facial expression.

We can make further confident inferences with RVP’s resulting game incidents post the tackle:

29:35 mins: Sharp turn, twisting and accelerating from a standing start.

31:36 mins. Makes strong sliding tackle, intuitively and spontaneously gets to his feet and accelerates sharply.

32:43 mins: a phase of play which shows RVP making passes, sprinting and moving with perfect mechanical fluidity.

33.55 mins: drifting deep to link up play and 45.53 mins: defending in the penalty area. If a striker was carrying an injury, he would probably not be running box to box.

38:40 mins: shows lovely quick, soft feet and agile hip movement around the box.

The movements highlighted are important, as these movements broken down can form part of a battery of tests to confirm a player match fit and are some of the most mechanically demanding match actions. Furthermore, post tackle, RVP exhibits no sign of an antalgic gait, (a form of gait abnormality where the stance phase of gait is abnormally shortened relative to the swing phase. It can be a good indication of pain with weight-bearing) indeed, he shows no sign of any dis-comfort whatsoever throughout the rest of the half. If any injuries were present the movements RVP exhibited would not be as pure or as fluid as he performed them.

IMO from a physiotherapy perspective RVP shows no signs of any lingering injury whatsoever. At worst he could have suffered a very minor contusion, the sort you can often ‘run-off’ in a match. Although, in fairness, there were no signs of even this. There is always the possibility that he may well feel some soreness and ‘tightness’ the next day, but he would have been straight on the physio plinth and the training ground for treatment…movement therapies and stretching techniques would be allied to some massage techniques to minimise any haematoma formation. He should be 100% fit for the weekend.

We should just about manage.to get a decent team out. Anita, Perchinio and Williamson will come in for colo, simpson and tiote. Harper should be able to stand in for Krul. Any more injuries and we will be in trouble though!!

Anyone know where I can find the Brendan Rodgers interview where he explains he would not have let Andy Carroll go on loan if he knew he wouldn't have got any new signings?
I've tried sky but no joy, heard he's pretty fuming in it so wouldn't mind a gander at it!

Don't take a hit you are unlikely to get back - this move suggests you think Guthrie will score/assist to make up the 4-pointer; Guthrie has shown no significant FF history of goal threat. If you are worried about Zabaleta starting, just do Gibbs.

Could be in trouble this weekend, already took a hit to get Hazard in, and now Kagawa RVP and Cole looking like not playing. Bench looks like 2 point candidates throughout.

If SAF confirms Kagawa out, would you agree Kagawa>Cazorla is worth a 4 point hit?
    The other option is Cole>Baines?

I really disagree. Kagawa & Cole could be classed as urgent but nothing else needs doing right now.

Draft a wildcard team, see how much you want it over what you've got and could have in 3 weeks. If you really, really want it then press the button but I think you'll find it isn't worth it.

No, another 4 point hit is not worth it. SAF never provides a straight answer in any event. It wouldn't surprise me to see Wigan score and so Maloney is a reasonable auto-sub. Demel doesn't look a great auto-sub but you never know.

Worth it. In half a season last year he had 100 FF points - most coming in the second half when he gained Pardew's confidence. He looks to be nailed on to start this year and I think you could project out a ~140 point season. Pienaar has never been a great FF asset (look at his history) and Nolan has had only 1 season with over 100 FF points. The gamble is worth the price imo.

Which would you do next week?

    a) Kagawa & Podolski -> Hazard & Fletcher (leaving 0.3m in the bank)
    b) Kagawa & Podolski -> Hazard & Lambert (leaving 1.3m in the bank)

    I prefer a). but b) means I can get Baines in GW6

There is obviously some part of no alternatives that I failed dismally to explain properly.

        I profusely apologise for this.

I had hoped however you might have guessed knowing their prices that it would not be possible without destroying the rest of a perfectly decent team.

Also ONONE is EVER essential in fantasy football. They may indeed be the best options, but these are not the same thing.

If he's fit he'll play. Utd can't afford to be complacent with Wigan, especially as they got burnt last season.

      Doubt he'll play 90mins though

Would appreciate some advice on this. I'm thinking of doing:
Zabaleta to Mertesacker and Bale to Hazard
However, my goalkeepers are DDG and Green, so there’s a risk that neither of them might play.
    My options seem to be:
    A. Also make a goalkeeper change, probably Green to someone, meaning 8 point hit
    B. Downgrade DDG to fund the Bale to Hazard move, and not do the Zab to Mer
    C. Risk it for a biscuit, and just do the above 2 transfers mentioned above!

I know not for certain, but I would be surprised if DDG didn't play on Saturday.

A lot of the papers are suggesting DdG will play, but to give Linde just 1 game seems a bit pointless. I suppose it might have given DdG a wake up all ... bit worrying if he needed one though!

Yeah that's all it was, for his clangers against Fulham. Was a little harsh as he saved Utd's bacon against Eve.

None of the above. DDG probably starts v Wigan. Why switch that out ? Bale has a really terrific schedule ahead. And, I know it's not conventional wisdom on here, but Hazard is not the second coming of Ronaldo. He will not get 40 assists this year. Keep Bale through the next 3 GW at least. If you want CHE cover, get Lampard or Mata next week.

Hmm, got me thinking on the Chelsea coverage. Would be awesome if I could find 2.9 to upgrade Allen to Lampard. Would likely mean downgrading 2 out Cole, Zab and DDG though...

8 pts hits are too much especially for DF & GK who have not much upside for points. I think Zabaleta is not urgent issue and B is possibly my move.

    DDG
    Gallas Baines Hangeland Rafael (Clyne)
    Michu Bale Kagawa Yaya (Kaca)
    Tevez Torres (Graham)

    1.4m in the bank.

No idea what to do for this GW. If Kagawa is ruled out maybe Cazorla > Kagawa.

    Any ideas?

If you didn't already have Hazard, would you still get him in next week? I know he's on form, but a fair few of his points were fortunate, and CHE have 7 tough games in their next 9 from next week onwards! Better options perhaps?

I got him this week, just to cover myself. I got burned last year by resisting to get Dempsey, saying every week that he had tough fixtures or his points would dry up. They didn't and I lost my mini league because I couldn't claw his points back.

Tough one. I'd still be inclined to get him merely due to his high ownership making it disastrous if he explodes and you don't have him. Similar to Bale from seasons past.

Obviously his performance in the QPR match will help you decide

He's edging close to another price rise on Fiso. Is there a cap on max price rise? Price shows at 9.7 in the history, and he's 10.1 now. I thought the cap on rises was 0.3??

I think Mata and Lampard are better values at 1.0 and 1.1 cheaper. Mata didn't become crap over the summer and Lampard, despite playing in a deeper role still gets forward (witness his England goal) is on pens and with Meireles gone, seems nailed on. Hazard is on a great streak but there will be some regression, probably sooner than later.

    de Gea (Fedirici)
    Baines Gorkks Cuellar (Clyne) (Coloccini)
    Y.Toure Santi(c) Michu Hazard (Noble)
    Torres Tevez Graham

I know I haven't got RVP, but I'd have to take a hit to get him in. I don't think I'm willing to take a -4 for him.

    What do you think otherwise?

Note: This isn't a wildcard team.

There are two more rounds of price change and he's at -84% right now.. 😐

Do you think it's worth having Gorkss instead of Demel in a WC team looking at the next 6 fixtures? (Gorkss has a higher goal threat and is 0.1 cheaper, I mean I can sell Demel for 4.0 only)

Cheers mate. Have a bit of a conundrum. Dunno which defenders to have in my WC team 🙁

        Current WC team:

        Foster Begovic

Baines McCauley (for the price rise, can become Ridgewell) Jenkinson (same) Reid (same) Demel

        Bank: £ 0.7

Which defenders should I have? Wanna keep Baines and Demel, don't mind doubling on West Brom defence (Foster + their defender).

Kinda looking to avoid NUFC defenders for now due to their injuries and Europa commitments.

I am going for Gibbs, Demel, Cuellar and Clyne.

So you want Baines, Demel and WBA (maybe).

Demel and Cuellar rotate fairly well. Then you could have Clark to go with your WBA defender. Hughes and SOT or WIG can also work as a pair. Depends on which duo you have more faith in.
