Adam Lallana is back in full training for Southampton. Reports suggest Ashley Young could be out for another month for United. David Luiz emerges as a doubt once again for Chelsea. Martin O’Neill’s defensive worries are starting to ease, while Steven Whittaker may return to the bench for Norwich’s FA Cup clash with Luton this weekend…

Adam Lallana is closing in on a comeback for Southampton after a recent spell on the sidelines with a knee injury. The Saints skipper has failed to feature since limping out of the Gameweek 16 match with Reading but after a few weeks of light training, returned to full training yesterday:

“I felt a little bit rusty but it’s my first day back after being out for six-or-seven weeks. It’ll take me a few training sessions but hopefully I haven’t lost too much fitness because I’ve been doing quite a lot of running. I’m so eager to get back playing, especially under the new boss. There’s a team of four who have come in, and the gaffer is starting to get his messages across. You saw what style of football he wants us to play on Monday night – the lads came flying out of the traps and were pressing hard. It’s going to be different, but it’s going to be good..the game on Monday [against Everton] was outstanding – the first half was probably the best I’ve seen all season from the stands.”

Unbeaten in their last six, Southampton suffered defeat just once in Lallana’s absence and despite the dismissal of Nigel Adkins, continued their recent form against Everton in their first game under new boss Mauricio Pochettino. While Adkins tended to field Gaston Ramirez on the left due to his captain’s injury, the Uruguayan returned to his more preferred role in “the hole” behind Rickie Lambert and with Lallana edging towards a comeback, the Saints’ attacking potential could soon be set for a turn for the better. Now down to 5.6 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Lallana (with attacking returns in six of his 16 appearances) looks a decent budget differential, though clashes against United and City in the next three will surely deter many from investing. Factor in Pochettino’s high pressing game and it’s likely the midfielder is eased back into action until he reaches match-fitness once again.

Wayne Rooney returned to training for United yesterday, quashing rumours of an injury scare after reports had suggested he had suffered a thigh problem the previous day. Sir Alex Ferguson may have concerns over Ashley Young, however, according to the Mail. The paper claims Young’s knee injury, sustained in the Gameweek 22 clash with Liverpool, could be set to keep him on the sidelines for at least another month – the former Villa man had started 12 of the last 14 league matches before a collision with Daniel Agger forced him off at half-time in the 2-1 win. While United have yet to confirm the Young story, any length of absence could afford Shinji Kagawa more game time after a recent return from a knee complaint – he has now started three of the last four and was even chosen ahead of Rooney for a role in the support striker role away to Spurs last weekend. At 7.9 in FPL and with an ownership of less than 5%, he could well be worth a punt ahead of an enticing run of fixtures which sees them play host to Southampton, Norwich and Reading in the next seven, in addition to trip to Fulham, QPR and West Ham.

Martin O’Neill has revealed the injury situation at Sunderland is starting to ease, with Carlos Cuellar, Danny Rose and Lee Cattermole all closing in on comebacks. According to the Black Cats boss, the trio are “not that far away” from a return and with no FA Cup duties this weekend, have another few days to step their recoveries before the Wearsiders play host to Swansea next Tuesday. While O’Neill was somewhat vague in his prognosis, Cuellar, in particular, will likely be reappearing on Fantasy radars once he’s fit and available – Sunderland have an enticing set of fixtures in the next seven Gameweeks and with four wins in six are starting to hit form. The Spaniard produced two sets of double figure returns in his last three home games before sustaining a hamstring injury and is set to welcome Swansea, Fulham and Norwich to the Stadium of Light in the next seven, in addition to trips to Reading and QPR.

O’Neill also admitted new loan signing Kader Mangane is yet to reach full fitness since arriving from Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal earlier this month:

“It is fair to say Kader’s a little bit behind the rest of the lads in terms of his fitness levels but we are looking to address that and we will step that side of things up this week. He has a great physique and presence at the back, he has what it takes to do a job at this level and we will just see how he comes on during his time here in the remainder of this season. Physically, he adds a different dimension to the side and he demonstrated in France over a number of seasons he is a quality player. Once he is fully fit, he will be pushing for a start and giving us competition for places.”

With Cuellar and Rose sidelined and John O’Shea also forced out of two of the last five through injury, O’Neill has had little chance of naming a consistent back-four in recent weeks. Both Titus Bramble and Matt Kilgallon have earned game time as deputies at centre-half but look set for bench roles at best as more options become available to O’Neill – given that the Black Cats have registered eight clean sheets this term, Mangane, at just 4.5 in FPL, could be an intriguing cut-price option if he nails down a regular role; Simon Mignolet has risen to 5.3 now, by comparison.

Norwich’s defensive options looks set to be boosted after Steven Whittaker returned to training earlier this week. Talking to the press ahead of the weekend FA Cup home clash with Luton, Chris Hughton revealed the right-back may feature on the bench as he steps up his comeback from a hip problem that has kept him on the sidelines since Gameweek 18. Whittaker’s absence has afforded Russell Martin the chance to return to the first XI in recent weeks and the Canaries skipper has impressed, with three goals in his last five appearances as a result of his fellow-Scot’s absence. It remains to be seen whether Martin can keep his place when Whittaker is fit and available, though; the former Glasgow Rangers man had started nine back-to-back league matches before picking up his injury.

A report in the Mail this morning is claiming that David Luiz is set for a spell on the sidelines after suffering a muscle injury in dying stages of Wednesday’s Capital One Cup tie. Luiz returned to the bench having missed the victory over Arsenal with an ankle knock but, according to this report, sustained another setback late on in the tie having appeared as a second-half sub. Luiz has been a popular signing off the back of his role in the Chelsea midfield and the recent double Gameweek. However, those still holding the Brazilian will now wait anxiously on Rafa Benitez’s press conference later today.

Think Granville makes an interesting point about his team, and whether getting Fellaini prior to a rise, but also with risk of injury / suspension arising from the cup match at Bolton.

I think that it depends on your current team value.
With a lot of guys in the top 10-20k rolling with a total value of £107-£110m they are able to include the power 5, RVP, Saurex / Aguero AND have quite a spanky defence
For those of us working with £105m or less this presents a problem, in that we are either looking to pluck the correct differential midfield / forward to outscore some premium characters - principally Bale, Aguero, Ba - as they the most likely to be culled from a lower-value side, OR for a totally budget defence to keep up with likes of Nastasic, Gibbs, Baines and Rafael - not likely over the course of 15 weeks.

So, the only solution is to grab more value in situations such as the one Granville mentions with Fellaini.

To conclude - if he has a team value of £106m or under, he has to take that risk and grab him at £0.1m cheaper than next week, if he's over £106m (probably is) he can afford to confirm Fellaini's appearance and potential for return in the WBA game on Wednesday.

And what if Fellaini gets injured or sent off? Just take the £0.1m on the chin.

what im saying is you need to take some risks to bridge that value gap if it exists, or you are playing on an upward slope for the rest of the season

I agree with Granville, too late to play for TV now
In the first 20 GW, I checked FISO about 10 times a day. Now I've not noticed FISO in last 2-3 weeks.
0.1M is nothing for me atm

Why so frequently, the prices will only update overnight so just check late in the evening if you really need to daily.

And arisesirgiggsy, you are going a bit overboard about the 0.1m. Let it go, Let it go - Rather lose the 0.1 and be sure that Fellaini isn't injured or suspended from the cup game, but the bigger issue is that the other 14 players could become injured/suspended which will change your transfer plan.

Unless you have the exact funds and can't wait, I don't really see why people make early transfers. This value malarkey is overrated. If you've chosen players who are performing your value will most likely go up, so not worth paying too much attention to it, especially when you risk injury etc. by making the early transfer and come Saturday you wish you could have waited to enable an alternate option to be chosen.

I guess I'm in a better position since my team is 109.4m. (I actually lost a load of value in my WC). I Just feel that my free transfer is worth a lot more than a 0.1m rise.

    Wenger. What an ASSCLOWN:

With Newcastle making numerous signings in January, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger feels there should be a limit on the number of deals clubs can do in January.

He said: "I think it should be completely cut out or limited to two players because it is unfair for the league that some teams have played, for example, Newcastle already and then some teams have to face Newcastle still with six or eight new players. They do not face exactly the same team.

"I believe the number of players you can buy should be limited."

Absolute idiot. Maybe if you opened up your arse cheeks and spent some of the 50+ million of players sold you might make some signings too.

      He has a point.

There should be no January transfer window.

You go with what you have on Aug 31st.

Might give some youngsters a chance if injuries hit a squad excessively.

The big teams are the ones constantly exploiting the smaller teams in the January window, make no mistake. Removing the transfer window would give stability to clubs with less money to work with.

Having a squad full oj injured players is an exception. Besides, wenger agrees that a couple of transfers shd be allowed.

If u have a smaller squad, u shd have realized that in august and addressed that problem.

Actually, I think he has a point. I don't like it when a new season starts and a club has 6 or 7 new faces in the first team. It's almost like a new team with no continuity with the past. And clubs shouldn't be able to buy their way out of trouble.

Although I think Wenger is far too tight with his money, I feel he has a valid point here.

Ignoring injuries & suspensions, the teams should play the same team as everyone else.

For example, in the fight for 4th spot, say Spurs had played Newcastle twice already, but teh second time Arsenal played them, Newcastle had bought 5 new players...

      That isnt really equal.

So why cant wenger fork out for new players as well. Newcaslte have spent less that 10m collectivley on these new players. Yet Wenger has had over 60m+ in sales over two seasons.

Its is not Newcastle's fault that Wenger does not strengthen his squad.

Even if Arsenal did buy players in January, what about the rest of the clubs?

What you are saying is that if one club buys a player in January, all the clubs have to buy a player, of equal quality!!

ANY CLUB is free to buy any player they want...

Wenger is just angry that Newcastle probably took some player he was after.

I think any player in the world would choose Arsenal over Newcastle 🙄

Every club is not free to buy any player they want.

Most clubs have not got that much money to gamble with.

Wenger is right here, get over it.

There are two transfer windows and everyone is aware of it. Wenger should read between the lines of his comment and that the January transfer is an opportunity to strengthen your team and by golly we need to strengthen, so he should get off his derriere and start spending on the big players we have needed for more than 5 years.

This time next week the window shuts and all we have down is extend 6 british players contracts - half are crap and the other half are overrated.
Not one of the current team would get in the team between 1998 and 2004 - that is how far we have fallen. Amazingly he is still the manager.

First of all I think he's silly to single out and attack Newcastle like that.

But with his general point I agree. I don't think the January transfer window is a good idea in itself.

Been out for 3 weeks performing military service..

Is Theo still playing up front? Didn't have him this round as i totally missed the DGW and it hurts.

Is the power 5 now the way to go?

And Sturridge really? Surely Luis is worth the extra cash as i already have him and haven't even seen DS in action yet. 3 Goals in 3 games is a great start but im not getting him unless Suarez drops really deep. He will deliver and create more than Studge IMO.

Theo has played out wide in his last 2 games with giroud up top.
Sturridge is for those who don't own suarez already or can't afford him.Sturridge also is good value at 7.4m but his upcoming fixtures put me off from buying him for atleast two more weeks

Depends whether giroud is playing? Most of the time i think he'll play right wing, but when giroud comes off early in most games he'll take up the role up top. But he still a great midfielder to have.

The p5 is a good way to go, all very consistent but alot of people opt for 3-4-3 with RVP - Aguero - Sturridge up front and leave out one of the p5 to get a cheapie.

Suarez will outscore sturridge as his more involved in the play but remember sturridge is playing up top and i feel he should get consistent returns and it is worth downgrading to him for the extra 3m.

GB, your team is similar to mine. Do you think Punch is worth the extra 0.9 over Guthrie, if he (hopefully) won't play most of the time?

Fair enough, I'd keep Punch if I already had him too. I'd rather play 4-3-3 than start Guthrie though 😀

My thinking with Bertrand is if Luiz is definitely out for 2 weeks, I'll get him in. If he starts even one of the next 2, it's worth the punt at 3.9.

I dont think that'll be a problem honestly, you're not going to rotate DeGea. Federici steps in when he's dropped/rested/injured, no biggie. He's the cheapest most nailed on option there is at the moment.

Adkins did say this on Boruc at the start of the month so i think he is actually nailed on. Might get him instead.

What do you experts think of this WCT?

    Begovic Bunn
    Cameron Azp Cuellar Harte Davies
    Bale Mata Fellaini Walcott Marv
    RVP Aguero Fletcher

Options to switch Fletcher to Sturridge later on and can downgrade Cam once Wilson is back

    Need some opinions ..

Would you rather have 3 big team defenders plus a 3.9 non playing sub goalie , 3.8 sub def and a 4.0 sub def with Guthrie = 0.0 in bank

    Or

2 big team defenders and 3 4.0-4-2 rotating defenders, 4.1 playing sub goalie and some loose change maybe to upgrade guthrie

Thanks , ill rephrase it actually

3 big defenders with a great team but poor subs and no money

      Or

2 big defenders with a very good team with decent subs

By big if you mean Kompany, Terry/Ivan/Cole, Vidic/Evra then you can go for A as they are not going to be rotated much so you won't need your bench but if its Azpi,Nasty,Evans/Rafael/Jones then definately B

Yes it is possible to be on this site 25 hours in one day.

If 3 men were on it as a team, for 8.33333 hours each, that would equal 25 hours, in one day.

Morning all, would be very grateful for any thoughts on my WC team:

    Mignolet (Federici)
Zabaleta, Demel, Davies (Clyne, Martin R)
    Bale, Mata, Michu, Fellaini (Walters)
    RVP, Sturridge, Fletcher

    Nowt in the bank

Sound OK? Is Walters best choice 5th midfielder for 6.6 (originally had Snodgrass)?

is there a reason why ppl believe pearce is the most nailed on Readin defender? fell for it with Gorkks and Shorey.. twice bitten and all that.. and i still fancy a 3.8 punt. Also is Onuoha nailed on? dont really follow qpr

I gotta be honest in saying that I have jumped on the Pearce bandwagon, having originally considered Mariappa as the safest pick. I think Onuoha is nailed on now that Nelson has gone, but I still think one of the 3 x 3.8m Reading defenders are a better pick

Half-decent idea. But rotation is kinda pointless. They arent defenders so as to 'rotate' them, and they could just as easily score decently home and away both.
