Pre-Season

Sleeper – Sergio Aguero

There was no better way for Sergio Aguero to stay in the forefront of our Fantasy thinking ahead of last season’s kick-off. The Argentine’s last-gasp title-winning goal against QPR will go down in legend as one of the Premier League’s defining moments – with Martin Tyler’s stunned reaction providing a worthy accompaniment from the commentary box, it was the stuff that Sky Sports marketing men must have dreamed of:

His contribution that day summed up Aguero’s debut season at the Etihad. Arriving from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2011, his impact was instant from the moment he climbed off the bench to bag a brace in a home rout of Swansea on the opening Gameweek of the campaign. By the time his sweetly-struck strike whistled past Rob Green to clinch the crown, Aguero had racked up 23 goals, nine assists and 30 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points, for a total of 211 points.

Highly priced across the Fantasy games prior to the previous season’s kick-off, Aguero’s exploits ensured he remained a popular pick but the Argentine lasted just 13 minutes of the season opener against Southampton before sustaining a knee injury. With Carlos Tevez affording Fantasy managers a cheaper route into Roberto Mancini’s attack, Aguero was shipped out by almost half a million FPL managers by the time Gameweek 3 arrived and although he returned to the first-team fold by the end of September, the previous season’s momentum was never recaptured.

Despite supplementing 22 league starts with eight sub appearances, Aguero mustered a mere 12 goals as City’s failed to recapture the attacking swagger that wrestled the title from United so spectacularly. With three assists and 16 FPL bonus points also accrued, the Argentine proved a hugely frustrating Fantasy performer and managed just three sets of double figures over the course of the campaign. Finishing on 121 points – 90 less than his first term on these shores – Aguero’s tally was bettered by both Tevez (169) and Edin Dzeko (130) as his season, like City’s, stuttered to a meek conclusion.

The Prospects

With Mancini now gone and Manuel Pellegrini finally installed in the hot seat, City’s acquisition of Fernandinho and Jesus Navas suggests they are determined to go on the offensive a little more often next time round. Having scored 93 goals in their title-winning campaign, they found the net just 66 times last term as opponents found a way of dealing with Mancini’s somewhat one-paced approach.

The new man in charge is likely to opt for a 4-2-2-2 or 4-2-3-1 formation, though either way Aguero looks key to City’s fortunes, while the likes of Dzeko could be offloaded as Pellegrini opts for improved mobility up top. A price drop across the Fantasy games for the former Atletico man seems inevitable after his disappointing showing – having started last term at 11.5, a slip to 11.0 looks realistic and while Tevez may begin cheaper at 10.0 or 10.5, his compatriot’s keen eye for goal holds the greater potential.

With David Silva, Samir Nasri, Yaya Toure and Navas all vying for attention in the City midfield, Aguero seems the safest – and most explosive – Etihad option on next term’s agenda, providing Pellegrini can reignite their attacking drive. In terms of frontline options, Robin Van Persie’s exploits on the other side of Manchester is likely to earn the Dutchman a 13.5 price tag and with many Fantasy managers looking to cut corners with their initial budgets, Aguero could well prove a tempting alternative if Wednesday’s fixture list reveal an opening spell that falls kindly in City’s favour.

Who are the 5 players you will build your team around this year?

RVP, Sturridge, Oscar, Bale. Walcott for me.

    Probable value 13, 9.5, 8.5, 11, 10 = 52 on only 5 players 🙁

I think Hazard is going to have an excellent season, and if it wasn't for Mourinho taking the helm at Chelsea, I would have expected some great returns from Oscar too. I still do, but Mourinho's alleged lack of faith in youth, and the freedom he will give the attacking players behind the striker makes me think hazard's more out and out directness would thrive more than the young Brazilian's subtlety.

Towards the end of the season he was brilliant. Mata and Hazard were wider and he was pulling the strings in the middle, I can see him doing what Silva did in his second season. Chelsea's rotation worries me though.

Good thread...Best part is the fact that this season is looking like there will be far more options than the one we just had...Hardly a mention of Michu/Fell/Santi is ever heard on here of late...Not that they have become bad players but the field has widened....as for the power five....THE KING IS DEAD...LONG LIVE THE KING.

Well it really depends on the value of the players... You would imagine RVP and Bale, despite being pricey they were very consistent this season. With Man United/Everton/Man City/Chelsea manager changes they may have different player preferences, so difficult to say with any accuracy until at least a few games into the season... Having said that for me it would currently be:

RVP, Bale, Oscar, Coutinho and Rafael

Morning everyone. Is it August yet?

DGW #1 is going to have a significant impact on starting squad selections i reckon. Loading up on DGWers will allow for the dust to settle and just see starting line-ups from most teams.

For me: 3 X CHE and depending on their opponent probably 2 or 3. (**might** even go without RVP for GW1 as it will depend on the other DGW team).

    Game on from there.

Transfer markets will be crazy for the first few weeks, as seen last season. Need to be prepared to make early decisions unfortunately. I am also prepared to take a hit during the CHE "blank week".

With the points system as it is, and with defences decling (although Mourinho's Chelsea and Moyes' Manchester Utd may prove to buck the trend - perhaps!) and the money being better invested in attacking assets, would this be the way forward?

    1 x Baines

And the remaining 6 being cheap nailed on defenders(including GK) that rotate well.

I do remember two or three seasons ago where this was done with Sunderland and Newcastle rotating home and away to extremely good effect. Ie baines combining with two defenders and a GK from the home team, effectively tripling up on defences. Harvested almost 18 sets of clean sheets in the second half of the season.

With clean sheets in such scant supply, could this therefore eliminate any GW defender selection headaches, which appear to be time consuming, frustrating, and often futile? Leaving anxious managers to merely worry about the 'important' half of their team?

Chris Glovers blog from last summer.

I am also thinking 7 uber cheapies and roll with it. Stick rotation planning and just pick the best value defenders. Sure there will be some bad weeks, but over the run it should work out alright, with an upgrade in the January WC.

Baines is going to be a horrible price and we're yet to see how Everton will fare under Martinez. I think I'll holding off.

Perhaps Johnson or Vertonghen + 1 5.0 and the rest 4.0-4.5

Any other heavy hitter who can score goals is a candidate, Vertongen is an example. I'm still cautious about Evra's attacking forays, and the sword of Damocles appears to be dangling above the well covered head of David Luiz. Currently Baines' set piece duties and move into a wing back position make him a better prospect than his rivals in my eyes.

      What about:

      1x4.5m keeper & 1x4m keeper

      2x4.5m defenders & 3x4m defenders

Then just spend heavy on midfielders & strikers

2 rotating keepers. Total 9.5 mil

Two from either Chelsea, United, City or Liverpool depending on fixtures. Total 13.5 mil

Three way rotation. Total 13 mil

Two rotating players out of the front 8. Total 10.5 mil

Total is 46.5 mil leaving 53.5 mil to find 6 players. Key for me then is finding the Michu and fellaini of this world for next season to balance the books.

      Hi John,

This is a repost from my reply earlier, as the comment link will take you to the bottom of a hard to navigate list of comments:

From what I understand, the ratings system allows forum users to vote individual posts up or down., resulting in a cumulative rating for a post. Presumably the intention is that disruptive and irrelevant posts are not voted for, or voted negatively, while constructive or interesting posts are voted up, to reward both the post and the user who posted them. So if you filter by rating, you should in theory get the more interesting and constructive topics and filter out arguments/spam/trolling.

Sticky's are determined by the moderators, who may decide that a particular topic is of interest to the whole community, and will therefore benefit from the greater visibility. I assume this is due to potentially interesting topics being lost in the stream of comments.

      Hope this helps.

You got a reply on your first post.

Stickies are just the posts which the mods have highlighted in green, they don't take into account the effect of any voting on the post or the thread.

Discussion ratings take into account the rep of all the up and downvotes on a thread.

Agreed. The game is not won in the first rounds, although a few good signings will always help.

It'll be interesting to see who is still involved to the bitter death.

Don't see it happening and I'm really losing respect for Zidane. I consider speaking in that manner about another clubs player to the media to be as bad as tapping him up.

Please could someone explain this to me: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/tennis/22926351

I'm no Tennis expert but a few posts down it says Murray 5-6 Cilic, but then a few posts further up it says Cilic has won the first set 4-6, so how did Murray lose a game in the first set?

    Thanks.

Admit it, who will spend their Wednesday evening making a fixture spreadsheet?

    o/

I am coming around to the fact that it might just be worth doing one for my defence and GK though. I think that I might adopt this approach next season:

    'Keepers and defence - fixtures.
    Midfield and attackers - form.

I usually just make a short-term one, perhaps 10 games or so, and give each fixture a rank in difficulty. It's not an exact science, but it can give a pretty good guide of who has nice fixtures on the horizon.

iphone 5 or htc one? I love the aluminium design of the HTC one but I hate how big android phones are these days. I have noticed the HTC got a few 5 star reviews though so could get used to it. Other factor is music. All my music is on itunes? Is there an android app that lets you put itunes onto your phone?

If you would like an Iphone, wait till september and buy an Iphone 5S or get the 5 at a reduced price. Going for android, Htc One is arguably the best android phone right now, and will be for at least 6-8 months.

Windows 8, try the nokia lumias.

Manager has control over everything, owner permitting.

Director of football has control over transfers and the long term strategy of the club, infrastructure, youth etc.

Head Coach deals with training and team selection.

Pardew has to have been made Head Coach for this to work, which he wont like.

          "Owner permitting" sums it up.

I may be old and old skool but surely the Manager knows where the team is lacking and thus the transfers that need to be made?

I understand someone being in charge for Youth teams/dev but what's Head Coach about? It's seems to be covered by the Manager.

Yeah that line was added for Abromavics benefit. Stupid really.

Head Coach and Director of football are a combo

Manager and Owner is the other option.

The latter requires a more proactive Owner to run the infrastructure and keep an eye on transfer budgets etc.

Same here. One of my biggest mistakes was letting go of DDG.

I had him in just before the bandwagon and was sure I had made a good decision, everyone on here was taking the mick, I decided to downgrade to Szczesny to get some more funds and then he went on a massive run on cleanies and Szczesny went out of favour. Could have been a 40 point difference.

Creating a better measure of form would be very desirable but I don't have that data at my disposal. However, what I used - PPG for previous 4 games - appears to be a useful predictor of points. It doesn't really matter what you call it: form, past points or Ethel Blenkinsop; it does a job we want it to do and that's all that really matters.

My belief is it does matter as it doesnt answer the age old debate of form vs fixtures. Your right that as a predictor it is very useful, but that wont be how these forums read the word "form". Which was essentially my point, correct descriptions is an essential component to efficient statistical analysis.
