Scout Report – Jozy Altidore

Paolo Di Canio’s summer overhaul of the Sunderland first-team squad continued on Tuesday afternoon with the acquisition of Jozy Altidore from Dutch outfit AZ Alkmaar. The 23-year-old arrives at Wearside on a four-year contract and is the Black Cats’ eighth signing over the close-season, with more new faces still expected to follow:

The transfer ends a lengthy chase for the US international’s signature, with Sunderland seeing off the challenge of a number of suitors, including Italian side Lazio, to bring Altidore to the Stadium of Light. Speaking to the club’s official website, the forward was delighted to return to the English top-flight, having previously plied his trade with Hull back in 2009/10:

“Anybody that knows anything about football knows the Premier League is the full package, it’s the biggest league in the world. I’m thrilled to be here, and I’m looking forward to getting adjusted as quickly as possible. It’s a fantastic club, and I’m really excited about the season. I hope the fans like what I do on the pitch.”

The History

Altidore’s career began as a 16-year-old back in 2006 with the New York Red Bulls. Over the course of a couple of years, he produced 15 goals and four assists in 37 MLS appearances before signing for Spanish club Villarreal in June 2008. His time in Spain was disastrous, though. Altidore managed a single goal from nine appearances and was sent out on loan on three occasions, with temporary stints at Xerez, Hull and Bursaspor harvesting just two goals and eight assists from a combined total of 40 league matches.

A move to Alkmaar in the summer of 2011 proved the making of Altidore. His first season in Holland produced 16 goals and three assists from 34 league games before he stepped up another level last year, with an impressive 31 goals and seven assists from 39 domestic matches. Despite his relatively young age, Altidore has already turned out for the US national side 60 times, finding the net on 17 occasions.

The Prospects

Clearly, Di Canio’s relentless summer recruitment policy is indicative of a lack of faith in the squad inherited from Martin O’Neill – the Italian’s thoughts on his rebuilding program highlight just what he expects from his side next season:

“We are going to build a very, very good team with a very good work ethic. That will be crucial on the field – we are going to face the opponents, we are going to challenge the opponents. All the individuals wearing the shirt need to make the fans proud because this is the minimum that we can do because we have a big privilege to wear the shirt. My team and the players I select will always have to wear this shirt with honour, dignity and respect, otherwise they can’t play under me.”

Having also criticised the fitness levels of players under the previous regime, Di Canio has already introduced a summer boot camp with double training sessions in order to ensure his charges are capable of implementing a high energy pressing game. Indeed, the Black Cats strolled to a 13-1 friendly win over a local XI on Wednesday evening, with Altidore climbing off the bench to notch on his debut.

In all likelihood, Sunderland – providing Di Canio keeps the dressing room on his side – could be a far different proposition next time around, with a new style of play and numerous new signings for Fantasy managers to consider. While the influx of new players currently casts question marks over several starting positions in the Sunderland first-team, the situation up front seems fairly straightforward. Di Canio looks set to pair Altidore with Steven Fletcher up top for the season ahead, in an attempt to address the dire scoring record that saw the Black Cats find the net just 41 times last term – a record superior to just two clubs, Stoke (34) and QPR (30). A front two suggests Stephane Sessegnon will either be forced to the flank or, as suggested by previous reports, sold on as Di Canio restructures his side. Elsewhere up top, Danny Graham and Connor Wickham seem set to be forced further onto the periphery as a result of the new boy’s arrival.

Many will perhaps be sceptical of Altidore’s impact, given that he produced a single goal in 28 appearances for Hull but bearing in mind he was just 20-years-old at the time, playing for a team near the foot of the table, his lack of impact is a little understandable. His phenomenal record for Alkmaar last term bodes well for his potential and speaks volumes for his development, with the US international boasting the height, pace and physique required to flourish alongside Fletcher.

Priced at just 6.3 in the Sky Sports game, Altidore should come in around 6.5 to 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and could prove a decent mid-price option, though there’s no doubt his arrival will boost Fletcher’s goal potential. Given that the Scot notched 11 times in 28 matches in his debut season in a struggling Sunderland side, he may still remain the main man for Di Canio’s side, with his predatory instincts benefitting from a more physical presence alongside him this time round.

With a home game against Fulham and trip to Palace in the opening three matches, Di Canio’s side are handed the chance to hit the ground running early on. If Altidore is quick out the blocks, he could well make a persuasive case for inclusion in our three man frontlines but the downside is that the first few months look tricky overall for the Black Cats, with a schedule over the opening 19 Gameweeks rated third most difficult of any side by our ticker. From Gameweek 4 onwards, Sunderland face Arsenal, Liverpool, United, City, Chelsea and Spurs across six of seven home games – a run that is perhaps enough to deter most from investing in Sunderland’s main assets until the fixtures smile a little kinder later in the season.

I've been having a think about the theory that you should play the fixtures early on, because there's no real form to go on, and the question I'd like to pose is: is playing the fixtures equally difficult early on, because teams are harder to predict at this time of the season? I'm wondering if this is going to be especially true this season what with all the new managers.

Maybe we ought to focus purely on proven quality players, along with some potentially explosive new players for a punt, and not worry too much about their fixtures. To give you one example, Southampton had an absolutely horrible run to start with last year, but Lambert got 4 goals in his first 5 games - including goals against City away and United at home.

I've been having a look at the results from the start of last season, and picking out what I thought were 'upsets' of some kind. This is obviously highly subjective, but I've been basing it on a fantasy perspective: basically unexpected cleansheets (or unexpected lack of cleans sheets) and high scoring from team you wouldn't have picked for it. If you want to make your mind up, this website is good: http://www.soccerstats.com/allmatches.asp?league=england

    So here's August:

    WBA 3-0 Liverpool
    Newcastle Utd 2-1 Tottenham
    Arsenal 0-0 Sunderland
    Everton 1-0 Manchester United
    QPR 0-5 Swansea
    Manchester City 3-2 Southampton

    Villa 1-3 Everton
    Tottenham 1-1 WBA
    Southampton 0-2 Wigan
    Manchester United 3-2 Fulham
    Stoke 0-0 Arsenal

    And here's September:

    Tottenham 1-1 Norwich
    WBA 2-0 Everton
    Liverpool 0-2 Arsenal
    Man City 3-1 QPR
    Swansea 2-2 Sunderland

    QPR 0-0 Chelsea

    Swansea 0-3 Everton
    Wigan 1-2 Fulham

    Norwich 2-5 Liverpool
    Man Utd 2-3 Tottenham
    Arsenal 1-2 Chelsea

This post is already well into TLDR territory so I'll leave it there, but my general observation looking at the first couple of months and some random months later in the year is that there were a lot of shocks in the first 3 weeks, and it calmed down a bit from there. And my point? Don't be put off by scary fixtures early on if there's someone you fancy a punt on!

The sort of post which people should look to for reassurance when their RMT gets shot down by the masses for not including an "essential" 4th midfielder in a couple of weeks time.

That's why I put in the caveat about them being "highly subjective"

The Liverpool one was the fact that Arsenal kept a clean sheet away at Anfield.

I'll take your point on he Chelsea game though, just the away win aspect I suppose but I'll retract that one. Nitpicker. 😉

I suppose more succinctly: fixtures are affected by form. The opening few weeks are a minefield. Probably why so many wildcard early on!

      Nice post Jonny.

I think the key thing with picking your first up team is

      A) pick players you know are going to start

      B) pick players from teams you suspect will hit the ground running (usually due to having good form at the end of last season or ones who have strengthened considerably over the summer).

      and

      C) If possible pick the players as per above but with good fixtures as the convergence of fixtures, form and class is a potent mix and without much immediate form to go on we have to rely on the probability of fixtures leading to form (especially for the weaker ones).

Cheers Dino. I think A is bang on, B is all well and good if you can get it right, and I agree with C up to a point.... Developing the theory a bit further I'd say it's fair enough to go for a player you like the look of anyway because they have good fixtures, but avoiding a player you would otherwise pick because they have bad fixtures can come back to bite you.

There's no worse feeling than holding off on a player because of fixtures, only for them to go on a run of form and everyone else jumping on the bandwagon.

Yes I see your point but I always count the fixtures as being the most important criteria when picking the lower budget players. I would caveat this by saying it's a lot more important to defenders than fwds and mids though so I do agree with you fully if it is a striker you are thinking of.

If we are talking the top end players then fixtures can have a very random effect. Go for the best players and forget about fixtures for these guys and if some other big gun hits form you can swap donkeys without too much hassle.

One of the biggest differences is the scoring system. Opta stats means that Santi Cazorla frequently got massive hauls last season without even scoring or assisting.

You get the usual points for goals assists etc...but also pts for blocks, tackles and passing.

These are the key extra points you get. Because of these there are no bonus.

Completed pass in the final third: 1

      Defending:
      Tackle won: 2
      Blocked shot: 2
      Clearance: 2
      Interception: 2

Makes Caz, Mata, Yaya...good passes that also score and assist a goalmine. Iniesta and Xavi would be kings of Metro.

Very pleased with Di Canios work in the transfer market so far. Any Spurs fans out there have an opinion on Huddlestone and if he could be a good signing for us?

Giaccherini was excellent for Italy in the Euros, a real standout performer. I did a double-take when I read that you were in for him. Nice one.

No clue whether Thud would work under Di Canio's style. I don't even really know what PDC's style is.

I really like Thud, he's a great guy with some great skills but christ is he limited too. Chronically injured and unfit (just how he's built) quite a lot of the time too. If you can build a midfield around him with some speedy workhorses and keep him fit then you have a great signing (like a much, much worse Pirlo).

I think Di Canio is aiming for a team that will press hard and break in numbers with pace. Perhaps he sees AJ, Sess and Giaccherini being the attacking players in a midfield supported by Huddlestone, who knows.

Would be more excited by the arrival of Rose, which is still a move I am hoping will happen.

Caddis was the key player for Swindon. I think Rose has been bought to play as more of an overlapping fullback to attack rather than any particularly important defensive duty.

Well pressing is something you won't get out of him.

Don't know what's going on with Rose - think he'd very much like to rejoin you but I don't think we are happy with BAE or yet able to find a decent LB.

Ah, the might Thudd. We like him a lot down The Lane but he's never quite delivered on undoubted promise. Lack of mobility is his key failing which may be offset by his slick passing, particularly long range. He played far more than AVB would have liked last season, purely due to injuries elsewhere, and that Jake was benched consistently probably tells you more about AVB's take on Jake than Thudd.

The great irony is that Thudd has always needed players around him to do a lot of the donkey work, he is really slow and losses position frequently which defensively is a nightmare for a CM partner, so Spurs switching to Mid-3 would have probably been ideal for him. But he's not really quite up to the standard required, in my view.

For SUN, I reckon a very decent signing but it does rather depend on how DiCanio lines 'em up, playing a 4-4-2 will quickly reveal the Thudd failings mentioned here. But given the right support (some decent young workers at SUN, no?) he certainly has the potential to add that touch of class in Mid. He;s also got a cannon of a shot - same about his accuracy!

      Hope that helps.

Thanks for your thoughts; I get the impression that Di Canio wants all of his players at peak fitness to suit his high pressing tactics. Hearing lots about double fitness sessions. So I assume he would want Huddlestone to be able to cope himself rather than relying on others to do the work, which doesn't sound like something he is used to.

Oh well all guess work for the moment.

    CRICKET

So England won day 1 (and a half) as they scored over 200 runs and the Aussies only got ~150. The Aussies made a good fight of it with Danny Agger scoring highly even though he was last to pick up the bat?

Now that the FPL launch is imminent (surely?), here's a few ideas for rule changes that i'll throw out there:

    (1) Penalty: 2 points for all players, -1 for a miss.
    (2) 1 point bonus for goal svored from outside the penalty box.
    (3) Scrap the -2 for an og
    (4) back to 1 wild card
    (5) allow as many players from 1 team as possible - i don't understand why this is restricted.

It would be nice if they changed scoring and BAPS to reward defensive midfielders more.

What's the reasoning for -1 for a miss? As in a shot off target, or a save? You'd find that even the best strikers would score poorly considering the shots/goal ratio they have.

Back to one wildcard would certainly be interesting and I'd quite like to see that myself.

As for having the limit of players from one team; the rule itself actually doesn't make that much sense. The price limit stops you from loading up on big hitters any way. If someone did want to put all their eggs in one basket, I'm sure it would be boring for them (your interest in FPL would be restricted to one game out of ten in a normal GW), as well as work out quite badly

This game is silly. Why on Earth are Hazard and Mata classified as forwards (and the most expensive ones)?

I found this on reddit earlier. Someone on reddit called Tozier said

"Think I've heard it might be this saturday 2.30AM - BST"

when asked where he heard of this, he said

"Far from first-hand, but I read a post on fantasy football scout that someone knew one of the coders in the company that runs the game, and he said this saturday morning.
      Could be nothing, though."

Yaya Sanogo is by far the most controversial player with estimates varying from 5 to 9 😯
Cardiff's goalkeeper Marshall is the least controversial: everybody thinks he'll be 4.5

New arrivals are in general the trickiest ones. I guess, 9 is clearly way too much for him, but there is less consensus about him than about any other player. Most answers vary from 5.5 to 8.

Quick members table for those looking to play Metro. Here's a run down of those who get the extra pts from passing. tackling, blocks etc. Handy for spotting the bargains.

After taking a quick look at these other fantasy games, I think I've realized I am a fan of FPL, not so much a fan of fantasy football. The scoring system, the layout, the rankings - all is great in FPL, compared to the other ones.

FPL is certainly the complete game in terms of league involvement, interface and scoring. Metro's scoring is currently better but because you can't see each other's teams it lacks something.

Also the pricing this year is insane in Metro.

Yes don't like Metro at all. Unless they've improved the interface, it's the cause of much frustration. Also the scoring is too dry, if you get my meaning.

They've really done themselves no favours with that move in both price and classification. He's not even that great at Metro's scoring. Very odd.

Well, it looks like a fair number of wingers are classified as forwards there, which may make sense as defensive midfielders actually have some value and it would hence create too many midfielders for too few spots.

And the price is purely dependent on the scoring system - maybe Snodgrass is a points machine in that game because of crosses, etc.
