West Brom boss Alan Irvine continued to restructure his first-team squad for the season ahead with the acquisition of Andre Wisdom on a season-long loan deal from Liverpool:

The 21-year-old is the sixth player to arrive at The Hawthorns since Irvine took the helm earlier this summer and, as the new manager admitted, his adaptability affords the Baggies options at the back:

“I’m delighted to welcome Andre to the club. I’ve spoken to Brendan Rodgers, who I’ve known for a very long time and who I trust implicitly. He said Andre would do a good job for us. That was reassuring. He’s a versatile lad. He’s played as a right-back for Liverpool in the Premier League last season, he also played as a full-back for Derby. He grew up as a centre-back and played on the left side of central defence for Liverpool against Preston on Saturday.”

The History

Yorkshire-born Wisdom started his career with Bradford City’s youth team before being snapped up by Liverpool at the age of 14. After progressing through the Merseysiders’ youth system, he was finally afforded a senior debut by Brendan Rodgers in 2012/13 and, after playing 22 times across all competitions, scoring once and chipping in with a pair of assists, was farmed out on loan to Derby County in October 2013.

Utilised exclusively as a right-back by Steve McLaren, Wisdom was nailed-on for the Championship outfit. Serving up a trio of assists over 37 appearances, he helped The Rams to the Wembley Play-Off Final against QPR back in May, where, despite dominating for much of the match, they fell to a 1-0 defeat.

At international level, Wisdom has represented England at every youth level, from Under-16 to Under-21, on a total of 37 occasions and has found the net three times.

The Prospects

A peripheral figure at Anfield, the move has immediately brought Wisdom onto Fantasy managers’ radars due to his budget price-tag across the Fantasy games. Available for a mere 4.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 5.2 in the Sky Sports Fantasy game, there’s a hope that the youngster could cement a starting berth for The Baggies as Irvine looks to improve upon a dire previous season which saw the club finish just three points clear of the drop zone.

Handed a start at right-back on his debut against Sacramento Republic at the weekend, Wisdom played the full 90 minutes in a 3-1 win as Irvine’s side triumphed for the fourth successive outing this summer. Whilst Fantasy suitors will be delighted with his start, the imminent arrival of Costa Rican international defender Cristian Gamboa suggests that Wisdom faces a real battle for the right-back berth as Irvine looks to strengthen following the departures of Billy Jones and Steven Reid over the summer.

However, with the 4.0-priced Chris Baird also offering an option in central midfield and right-back, the situation is far from clear right now. Whilst Irvine has cited the youngster’s versatility as key, The Baggies are not short of alternatives in central defence – new boy Joleon Lescott is favourite to get the nod after quitting champions City for the Midlands, whilst Gareth McAuley, Jonas Olsson and Craig Dawson are also in the mix.

Intriguingly, though, the local press reckon that the incoming Gamboa could be earmarked for an occasional role on the right of midfield. Pacier than Wisdom, he was used as a wing-back during Costa Rica’s recent World Cup campaign and could offer more from an attacking point of view – certainly, if such a scenario transpires, he could well be the best option from Irvine’s defence.

Certainly, five of West Brom’s first six home fixtures (SUN, EVE, BUR, CPL, NEW) suggest defensive returns could be on the cards, thus strengthening their appeal as cheap rotation options. Wisdom, undoubtedly, has the potential to be a very budget-friendly FPL option for the season ahead, though with a number of ifs and buts still surrounding the Baggies’ likely back-four, Fantasy managers may be best keeping a keen eye on Irvine’s intentions before acquiring the youngster with any degree of conviction.

Ok now that I am first to make my point. Here says Cahill and Cech pushing for starts. That is clear sign for me. Our back 5 are:

      Curtois
      Azpi Terry Ivan Luis

There are a lot of variations, but this is our first back line. Jose might change it sometimes in order not to overplay everyone but mark my words, this is it.
      Cheers

Is Sterling the key to breaking out of the template? I mean, Southampton is a whole new team and is likely to get crushed on Anfield. Keeping 0.5 ITB and he can easily be upgraded to another 9.0 as their fixtures get harder..

That's very silly. It's not a case of "oh, we've lost those goals so now the mids can score more" it's much more a case of adjusting the tactics to suit the team. Less all out attack, more defensive solidity.

I don't feel this is a valid point. You take a World Class player like Suarez out of a team, and the whole team will play differently. BR built the team and system around Suarez. Ignore his goals, look at how many assists he picked up last season, you can't replace that, not with anyone in this Liverpool squad, anyway.

I'm pretty sure you won't listen to any argument because you want Sterling.

I'll put it like this, Pool could start with 6 or more new players, they've lost their best player and it may not be a case of steam rolling Soton. I'm not saying they won't be different either but to pretend that they wont spend on replacements is silly. I also have yet to be impressed by Pool in preseason.

Sterling is definitely not in the template and i think it has generally been assumed that because he's 3m more than last year he's not worth it anymore but I think he's a good shout into the forward line up of the second mnost attacking team in the country last year.
Could be a rotation risk once Europe starts and 8.5 is just a bit much if not playing all the time.

I'm glad you asked because I'm wrestling with the same. I'm currently on Giroud because of the one striker situation, but I'm not married to that decision.

Not that he won't start but every season people look for reasons not to get Dzeko and every season it's a mistake.

Swans and Stoke rotate really well

Was considering Neil Taylor/Geoff Cameron rotation for 9m

However, seems to be mixed views on Cameron's game time....

Not sure how much can we read into the preseason selections etc

You mean start over Debuchy? Chambers would be a good signing, if Arsenal keep hold of Vermaelen; gives them 4 players who can play CB. Chambers is also likely to get a decent amount of games, due to his versatility. Also Gibbs is injury prone and Monreal is apparently leaving.

I seem to recall Arsene saying that he'd "offer competition to players of different positions"

From this I presume he won't start unless someone gets injured/bad

New to fantasy, is defence rotation really the way to go? I was gonna go with 3 solid/pricey defenders and then two 4.0 players on the bench...

        You don't want two 4.0

2 solid defenders and 3 that can swap. You will need your bench every now and again

was thinking of downgrading terry to shaw and then swapping targett/duff for a 4.5?

Depends what you fancy really, no right or wrong way although many will tell you there is - I personally like a couple of 4.0s that live on the bench only used in emergencies and then use that money elsewhere. This mainly being because if you are doing the rotation thing and your guy on the bench gets 2 goals, it is the most annoying feeling possible in FPL haha 😉
