Pre-Season

Sleeper – Juan Mata

Our series of “Sleeper” articles, focussing on players who failed to live up to our expectations in the previous season, got underway with a look at Theo Walcott’s prospects earlier this summer. Next up, we turn our attentions to Juan Mata, who, in his first two seasons with Chelsea in the top-flight, cemented his place as one of the most consistent midfielders in the Premier League. Serving up 162 points in his debut campaign in 2011/12, the Spaniard stepped up another level the following year and, after a slow start, eclipsed Eden Hazard as the top scoring Blues midfielder by 212 points to 190:

The arrival of Jose Mourinho last summer changed all that, though. With the Blues boss opting for Oscar behind a lone striker, Mata struggled to make any impact from out on the right – starting 11 of Chelsea’s opening 22 league matches and emerging from the bench on a couple of occasions, he mustered a mere two assists, with his new manager somewhat critical of the playmaker’s work-rate.

From creative lynchpin to peripheral figure, Mata was offloaded by Mourinho in last winter’s transfer window as former United boss David Moyes turned to the Spaniard with arguably his last throw of the dice.

Whilst the new boy’s displays weren’t enough to save the Scot from the axe, they were, nonetheless, quick to capture our Fantasy attention. With his confidence restored from a consistency of starts, the record signing served up six goals, five assists and 15 bonus points in just 15 appearances to sign off the 2013/14 as one of the most in-form midfielders around.

The Prospects

Further analysis of Mata’s United stats bode well for the season ahead. From the point of his arrival in Gameweek 23, only two midfielders – Yaya Toure and Steven Gerrard – scored more often. Toure notched nine times, with four spot-kicks boosting his tally, whilst six of Gerrard’s eight strikes over the period were also as a result of converted penalties. In terms of goals from open play, then, Mata was joint-top with Raheem Sterling amongst midfielders during that period.

The arrival of Louis van Gaal has enhanced the Spaniard’s Fantasy prospects over the summer. With United now lining up in a 3-4-1-2 formation, Mata has been handed his preferred role in “the hole” behind a front two and has scored twice during his side’s unbeaten US tour.

Mata’s arrival at Old Trafford looks to have finally afforded Fantasy managers a viable option in the United midfield. For two or three seasons now, the men in the middle have failed to make their mark and we’ve been forced to turn our attentions to Wayne Rooney or Robin Van Persie as the likeliest source of attacking returns but the little Spaniard’s Premier League record underlines that, if assured of a starting role, he will deliver – his 2012/13 tally of 212 points is still superior to Hazard’s high of 202, recorded last season. In spite of that, Mata comes in at 9.0 to the Belgian’s 10.0, suggesting he could be undervalued by FPL this time around.

The opening schedule is beneficial, too. United have been afforded the chance to quickly hit the ground running – showdowns with Swansea, Sunderland, Burnley, QPR, Leicester, West Ham, Everton and West Brom in the first eight Gameweeks could barely be more favourable and with Robin van Persie yet to feature in pre-season, Mata looks a strong double-up option alongside Wayne Rooney for those willing to splash the cash on the Red Devils from the outset.

    Mata feeds RVP + Rooney

Giroud is fed by all of Arsenal's midfield and is 90.5 cheaper

How are your benches looking? Anyone going for the maximum cheap bench strategy of 4m gk, two 4m defenders and one 4.5m midfielder?

Or is it wiser to build a bench that can deal with rotation?

What is the maximum you would pay for each position for a player that will be benched at least every other week?

I think the ideal is to have a couple of 4.0 - 4.5 throwaway players, but ones that are also guaranteed playing time and so will pick up minimum 2-3 pts per game. This will help when they are needed in an emergency.

Your bench should also include at least one player that scores 4-5 pts who you can use to alter your formation, deal with rotation, and also deal with injury problems that cant be resolved by transfers, e.g. if you have a couple of players injured and don't want to take the point hit

That leaves one spot for a player where you define their worth. This could mean a player who you think is a hidden gem, a rotation player, or any other reason which you think gives them some worth. I would say this player is likely to be in the 5.0 - 5.5 bracket

Mine currently has a 4.0 goalie and a 4.5 midfielder as throwaway players, a 6.0 midfielder to allow for the team changes and a 5.0 defender who I think could be a hidden gem but I want to see how his team do for the first few games

I've attempted going a similar route, getting the cheapest I can, but sure that they'll be playing to pick up the two* points when required. With any luck some certain 4.0 defenders will emerge out the woodwork as the season progresses

Completely horrific, I will steal ideas from this!

Moore is my 4.0 prospect in the defence. Young, worked his way into the team, according some some Leicester fans he could be national team quality in a few years.

The Albrighton injury reminds me of the Jerome Thomas one from last year. Everyone had him, then panic stations when he got injured in pre-season, with people trying to find a suitable alternative.

      Currently Wanyama.

Bench for me is bench fodder, but needs to be the right choice to get some points (at least 2) on the board if called upon but not too great that to tie up funds or have points sat.

I tend to only rotate the defenders as usually have low price placements as fillers.

Currently looking at an uber bench. Consider a 4.5 defender though. As long as the 4mil defs are nailed, I'm not too worried.

      Max:
      - 4.5 (DEF)
      - 5 (MID)
      - 5.5 (ATT)

I think early on it's about maximising the starting 11, as team value increases, we can start to upgrade the bench. Plus in a few weeks we will know who the nailed on 4.0 defenders are.

Mine will über cheap. If you're not rotating players you only really need one sub, unless you've been unlucky with injuries. I went pretty much all last season without using two subs, apart from the odd gw in February when few teams played it works fine. No need to tie up value you'll hardly use.

There are, as I see it, three perfectly viable options for attack at least: The one you mention, the one where you have a rotating cheap (but less cheap) mid with a similar forward (two 5.5s or so), and the one where you instead of the 4.5 bencher mid just go for a 5.0 one, with plans of playing him in very good fixtures and when needed. And I am not sure the latter is that bad an option, due to the increased chances of attacking points, and - equally important - quick value rises.

I have a feeling some 5.0 Burnley midfielder or the likes will suddenly sneak into the template.

Having said that, my bench right now is (4.5GK, 4.0DF, 5.0DF, 4.5MID). I'm fine with a 5.0/5.0 rotation in the back, as long as they are nailed-on, quality players with chances of attacking points and/or high CS expectations.

I'm an advocate for having a half decent bench. Each one should be nailed on, semi decent and hopefully bottom dollar but thats not a priority.

I'm ok with cheap, but agree that nailed on is key. If I can get two 4m nailed on defenders then I will...some seasons you can at the start, sometimes you can't.

Bartley is one I'm looking at ...he looks nailed on now Flores has gone and in the absence of new recruits.

          Subject to change:

          Krul / Foster

          Evans / F.Luis / Wisdom / PVA / NTaylor

          Mata / Hazard / Ramsey / Siggy / Hendo

          Costa / Rooney (c) / Bojan.

          - Swans/Stoke rotation 352/343.

However the more i think about it the more i think go for solid 343 with cheapo bench. Its easier to downgrade the expensive players in a 343 than upgrade people like Bojan for a better 3rd striker.

And the defence of Man U has something to prove first before buying an expensive goalkeeper or a CB.

Lost at the end of last post.

City-fwd dilemma - currently got jovetic but looking for the extra .5 to fit in dzeko:

    A) NTaylor -> Hutton
    B) Terry -> Luis
    C) Keep Jovetic

    Cheers!

That's tough actually. I might go against the grain here and say B. As much as he irritates the fantasy football community, Lukaku is likely to score well, and most people agree that Haz is a great season pick.

After 1week with focus on forwards I just changes to a heavy midfield focus.
Midfield seems undervalued compared to the potential heavy hitters in front(Costa, Sturridge)..
On a pure teamvalue strategy early on I feel that jovetic and bojan up front are a risk but a nice potential raise. In midfield several 9s will rise early if they get some points.
        Am I way off here?

Before you get shooed away to the RMT thread 😛 :

Big question marks over your defense. I'd go for colo over Haidara if you're investing in a 4.5 NEW defender, as Haidara is likely to get dropped when santon returns. I'd go for Ward over dann - more attacking threat and more nailed on. Front 8 looks nice though!

        Martinez Confirms Atsu Signing

Roberto Martinez has confirmed that Christian Atsu will sign on loan for Everton this week.

When asked on Australian radio about the possibility of signing Tom Cleverly and Gerard Deulofeu.

Roberto said: "Where we are now in terms of the squad, we are very much nearly closed.

"I say nearly because while the window is open you never look away from possibilities and possible players that can bring something different to the squad or they can add some extra competition because its going to be a demanding season with the European football.

"With the signing of Christian Atsu just on loan from Chelsea just this week, that's going to put us in a very strong position in terms of numbers.

"The names that you mentioned there is always a real affection towards Gerard Deulofeu, but we feel that he had a fantastic developing period with us on loan and now everything seems ready for him to find his feet at Barcelona."

I've gone Mata and banked the 1.5

Hard to say who will score more. If LVG sticks to a 532 with Mata in the hole he could have a very very good season. If he gets pushed out wide in a 4-3-3 it could go the pants

I have made quite a few change to my team since i started a couple of weeks ago, however i've noticed that i've not really had any Mancity players in there. I think they'll win the league however looking at the individual players, are there any worth the money considering their game time.

Maybe an argument for silva but any others?
