A new beginning. On the eve of a new campaign, two grumpy middle-aged has-beens gather in a studio to recall the summer’s feast of football and look ahead to another Fantasy season, full of hope.

There’s no frills. No live video cast. No special guests. Just Granville and I, stripped back and almost unplugged.

Don’t let that put you off, though. Even with our limited powers we at least attempt to cut through the issues currently rattling around in the minds of Fantasy managers.

We assess the Old Trafford revolution, the world without Suarez and the merits of the three-man strike force. We slice through the current transfer trends and weigh up matters such as the Sigurdsson/Bojan rotation, Fagregas vs Hazard and the Chelsea back four conundrum. We also manage to warm up with a nice little argument about the Alexis Sanchez bandwagon – the traditional pre-season barney.

Be there at the birth via this link, or witness the new dawn via the handy player below.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Will CPL become terrible straightaway with Pulis out? I am really not sure, but I think it puts enough doubt in the situation to make me go elsewhere for a mid price defender.

And therefore unless you want to be put in a position whee you need to make a defensive transfer early. No go is the way to go. I think Arsenal will score in week 1 anywhay

Please excuse me taking up loads of space with this post. As I have so many things to get done at work I naturally put all them off and wrote this-

As I am getting towards being fairly happy with my own team I thought I would share my thoughts on the 5.0 and 5.5 defenders. Aside from a few I am struggling to see real value in these this year

    Player- Smalling/Evans/Jones 5.5
Cons- With injuries to the defense and to other players I am not confident of clean sheets. The new system from Van Gaal seems to encourage scoring at the expense of defending.
Alternatives- Get on Mata/Rooney even Young short term for involvement in Man U

    Player- Jagielka/Distin/Stones 5.5
Cons- Play Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool in the first 6 weeks
Alternatives- None really, wait and see on Everton. Some people love Baines regardless.

    Player- Shawcross 5.5
Cons- A lot for a Stoke defender
Alternatives- 5.0 Begovic plays every week. Can wait to see if Wilson, Muniesa or Cameron get starts for 4.5

    Player- Sagana and Clichy 5.5
Cons- No where near nailed on with Kolorov and Zabeletta about
Alternatives- Man City defense looking a mine field for rotation. Fixtures not great, only really want to be involved in their attacking assets

    Player- Debuchy and Gibbs 5.5
Cons- Poorish fixtures but Debuchy is one of the viable options at 5.5. Gibbs will be injured in a matter of weeks. Will Mertsaker and possibly Kosch being out affect their ability to keep a clean sheet?
Alternatives- Going for Debuchy is an ok option. Chambers for a short punt until we see how the 4.5 defenders settle is how im going.

    Player- Lovren and Johnson 5.5
    Cons- Poor fixtures
Alternatives- Lovren is another who is an ok (ish) option at 5.5. Many new signings at Liverpool and if Manquillo or even Enrique get starts then rotation for Johnson?

    Others at 5.5
    - Fonte. Way too expensive for a Southampton defender. Clyne a better option
    - Nastic. Wont play much at all
    - Rafael. Injured? Rotated and MU not looking tight at the back
    - Sakho. Just no
    - Creswell. 5.5 For a West Ham player?

Too many 5.0’s to go in depth with. Will look at some of the popular/ most talked about-

    - Jenksion,Reid,Demel,Tomkins- Rotation risks, poor fixtures, poor defence
    - Olsson, Lescott,McAuley. 2 are injured. Other options at 4.5, maybe even 4.0. Play for West Brom
    - Rangel and Williams. Other options at 4.5.
    - Bardsley, Pieters and Huth. Rotation/ starting place risks. Begovic available for 5.0. Some 4.5 options may be available
    - Dawson, Davies, Rose, Kabul, Chireches and Dier. Big uncertainty over who will start.
    - Clyne and Bertrand. Clyne in particular is one option at 5.0. Some questioning how Southampton will be with so many players gone. If no new center back Yoshida is an option.
    - Isla and Caulker. The Caulker love confuses me. He plays in defense with Ferdinand and Dunne, leaky. Other options at 4.5. Isla may be an option later, supposed to very attacking.
    - Janmaat. Cheaper ways into the Newcastle defence. Many have Krul already.
    - Manquillo and Enrique. Worth watching but you don’t want to start with them
    - Davies (Hull). Loads of other options at 4.5
    - Dann, Ward, and Delaney. These are all good options. With that said if Marriappa or Kelly get starts then they are available at 4.5. Pullis leaving now casts doubts?

This year the consensus on forwards seems to be split between having 2 big hitters and one 6/5.5 or 2 big and one medium up top eg Rooney, Costa and Dzeko . Similarly the midfield seems to be split between 4 big and one 4.5/5.0 or 3 big and 2 medium eg Hazard, Mata, Ramsey, Young, Siggy. Either way there are loads of choices.

These are just my rambling thoughts, please feel free to disagree completely. Out of all those defenders I only really see Dubuchy, Lovren, Ward and Clyne as players I would have.

(Apologies for spelling, layout, player names and grammar errors, knocked this out double quick before a meeting)

      a very good post

"- Dann, Ward, and Delaney. These are all good options"...I'd say Hangeland may be an issue for Delaney owners

"If no new center back Yoshida is an option"...they've signed Florin Gardos

"Rangel and Williams. Other options at 4.5"...or maybe at £4.0m?

"...rotation for Johnson?"...they signed Manquillo on a 2 year loan so he's going to get pitch time at right back...and it looks like Alberto Moreno is on his way to play left-back...so I don't see that it's sensible to have a Liverpool full-back

"Dawson, Davies, Rose, Kabul, Chireches and Dier. Big uncertainty over who will start"...you missed somebody who may be worth a short-term punt

I hate the idea of bench fodder. There aren't enough players out there who are fixture proof, so why wouldn't you want more flexibility? I'm not trusting Man U's ability to keep a clean sheet until I see it. I'd go Jones-->Chester, Zamora--->Bojan (or a playable third striker)

Pretty happy with my team atm but got 1.5 m in the bank, I have Siggy,Hendo and Bojan in my time and want to upgrade Bojan to maybe Bony or Dzeko. Or I'm thinking of downgrade-ing Siggy or Hendo for a better mid, what do you reckon lads?

I think Hendo will start stronger than Siggy, but that will flip after the first few weeks. I want to see results from Siggy before I get him. He's cheap so he's easy to get in if I need to.

Even if he is he won't start GW2 when Lukaku returns. Naismith is a pointless pick imo, far too much competition on the wing as well.

I don't think its a good idea to plan for a transfer. You'd be better off keeping that free transfer in your pocket and going with Pelle right from the start.

I usually try not to pick a player for a single game week. If another one of your players gets injured or ends up not playing, you might have to take a hit to get him out, which would reduce any points he may have gotten you.

That being said, if you think he could do well, go for it! I went with Chambers for the first week (hypocritical, I know, but couldn't help myself).

In the end it's only a game right? And what kind of game is it if you can't have fun in the process?

I went with Schürrle and Kolarov just for the flair 😉

          excuse me?

Scoring 5goals/5assists per season as last-30-minutes forward is not half bad. How many other 5m forwards get Naismith levels of points? None of them.

OP I think Naismith is sneaky good for a 3rd striker. He's not going to challenge Lukaku for #1 striker because... Surprise!... he's never been a #1 striker.

Martinez tried to sign him at Wigan, and they love each other. Solid pick IMO

'Arry has a tendency to buy players to replace players he bought a few weeks earlier. I'm staying well clear of the QPR mess. Only in defence is there some certainty.

    Which players are fixture proof?
    Mine are

    1. Studge
    2. Rooney
    3. Yaya

    1. DCosta

disagree on the flops. Costa fits the Chelsea system and many teammates have been raving about the impact he's had - he has the public backing by his manager and teammates.

Sterling will be going into this season with confidence and added responsibility. From what we've seen in pre season, he's started where he's left off. If he can stay fit, don't see why he won't have a good season.

Lukaku is the most likely to flop...but what Everton has going for them is that they've maintained the same squad, without losing any key players. They can build on last season.

Chelsea's hit and run style would only get them a goal, last season's match against City Hazard did a great game but Ivan who got the whole cake.

Sterling would have to deal with what Suarez have been facing

Lukaku lack match fitness and he'll be back against top teams can't see him delivering.

Still disagree on Costa, but you obviously feel very strongly about it.

Not convinced by that argument on Sterling.

You're looking at the first few games and saying Lukaku will be a flop the whole season? Ok.

Ah okay, I see where you're coming from now. I thought you meant the flops were for the whole season.

In big games, competely agree that it will be very tight - especially for Chelsea. I wouldn't feel comfortable at all with 2 attackers for Chelsea in a big game.

Sterling will definitely be marked very tightly in big games, and so will Lukaku. So while I don't think they will flop all season, yea they might struggle in the big games.
