Manchester City yesterday announced the signing of Sergio Aguero from Athletico Madrid on a five-year contract. The 23 year old arrives at the Etihad Stadium in a deal rumoured to be in the region of £38m and is the club’s third foray into this summer’s transfer market, following the arrivals of Gael Clichy and Stefan Savic.

After months of speculation, in which the Argentine was strongly linked with both Juventus and Real Madrid, Roberto Mancini has finally got his man and Aguero’s addition will bring a true world-class talent to the Premier League next season.

Speaking on the club’s official website, Aguero promised:

My style has always been fight to the death for every ball and give 100 per cent in every game, concentrate to the maximum in everything I do, movement, running off the ball, winning the ball back and scoring goals. I’m not a player who can do everything but I have plenty to offer. I don’t think I’ll have too many problems settling into the team.

I think we are a team that in the future will be fighting every year to win major trophies. Let’s hope that it’s quite a few major trophies.

The Statistics

A prodigious talent, Aguero made his debut for Independiente at the tender age of 15 years and 35 days, breaking Diego Maradona’s record as the youngest player to take to the field in Argentina’s first division. Used sparingly in his first two campaigns, Aguero played just six times but gradually fought his way into the first-team and in total played 54 games over four seasons, scoring 23 goals and assisting 4.

In May 2006, Aguero then moved to Athletico Madrid for a fee believed to be around 23m Euros. Firmly established as a key member of the Athletico side, he missed just fifteen games during his five season stint in La Liga, playing 175 games, scoring 74 goals and assisting 29.

Last season saw Aguero break the 20-goal mark in Spain’s top division for the first time, as he finished third top scorer in La Liga; only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo found the net more often. Ironically, his 2 assists in 2010/11 were the lowest number of assists in any of his five campaigns at the Vicente Calderón, an indication that he’s more of a finisher than a real creative force. Aguero has also scored 16 goals and picked up 2 assists in 32 games for Argentina.

The Prospects

Much is dependant on the future of Carlos Tevez. Having missed out on a return to Brazil with former club Corinthians, Tevez has been linked with a move to Inter Milan- indeed, today’s papers reckon he’ll be gone before August is out. With Aguero now in place, it’s debatable as to whether Mancini would be prepared to hold onto a player whose presence may well have a negative effect on squad morale.

It’s impossible to tell if Aguero has been purchased as an immediate replacement for his countryman or if Mancini had initially visualised playing both in the same XI. Tevez, clearly, does not wish to stay in Manchester and with Aguero now on board, the City boss is in a position of strength- the new boy can easily replace Tevez up front in Mancini’s 4-2-3-1, meaning the club is no longer so dependant on their want-away star.

Aguero is also capable of playing out wide, behind a lone front man or as part of a front two and if Tevez stays, Aguero’s versatility may see him in a supporting role behind. Playing in the same XI as his compatriot could, however, even see the pair lessen each other’s appeal- Mancini is renowned for his defensive approach and there’s the very possible scenario of the duo sharing City’s goals equally, as opposed to last season where Tevez grabbed 20 of City’s 60 goals.

At present, the move raises more questions than it solves. It’s fairly certain that, in the long-term, Aguero will be the man to lead the line for City but for now, it demotes the likes of Mario Balotelli and Edin Dzeko further down the pecking order and to the periphery of our Fantasy thinking. Tevez’s exit is the ideal scenario for Fantasy managers- Aguero has this afternoon been priced at 11.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and should offer the same threat while being the more budget-friendly of the two.

With the club facing (SWA, WIG) in their first four game weeks, he’ll surely find his way into many a Fantasy team before the big kick-off a fortnight tomorrow. Aguero looks set to be a pivotal figure in City’s 2011/12 campaign and around 30 starts can be expected from the Argentine in what promises to be a sensational season ahead.

I would say yes, just because you went to the effort of placing the umlaut above the u 😉

Joking aside, i think he'll take time to adjust, like Dzeko, but dzeko started to score goals by the end so actually i think dzeko is a great price, just obviously better options out there

Aguero is a far better player, Dzeko has no pace and about a 10th of the skill.
Dzeko wont get a game if they go 4-3-3.

I just think they payed ridiculous money for him and at times looked out of his depth. Aguero on the other hand IMO is going to make them a real force this season.

I decided to go for the FFS copy and paste team. I'll make changes if need be just before the season starts. Any glaring holes here?

    Kenny/Given

    Kompany, Cashley, Bramble,/ Simpson, Wilkinson

VDV (C), Silva (VC), Sess, Moses/ Barton

    Bent, Drogba, Zamora

Spot the odd one out, Drogba is a punt. Will get Malouda instead of VDV for week 2 if he starts. RVP and Suarez ill bring in at later dates.

Originally had Kuyt, but Silva seems the safer option...

Fill in the blanks RMT, any takers?

    Given Kenny
    Lescott Kompany ...... Bramble Simpson
    Malouda ....... Nzog Taarabt Sinclair
    Rooney Rodellega Holt

Would you fill in the blanks with Hughes and VDV, or Luiz and Valencia/other <8.5m mid?

I think Luiz Lescott Kompany would be a great value, strong defence (assuming they're starters), but then I'm essentially wasting my 4th and 5th defensive spots, cos I'll hardly ever play them.

I think you're right, it would be a bit of a waste. I'd suggest keeping Luiz and Kompany, and downgrading Lescott to a rotatable defender to go with the other two.

Also VDV over Valencia for me, for your 5th midfield spot.

It's annoying, I really want to start with Lescott, and Kompany is a must-have at 6.0. But Luiz and Kompany makes more sense.

AVB might prefer the more physical Alex or Ivan to Luiz for the Stoke game, I suppose.

hmmm. 3DS is getting a price cut from $250 to $170 (unannounced in Europe). Anyone who buys before that, will get 10 NES downloadable titles and 10 GBA titles.

I wonder how possible it's going to be to buy one a day or so before the "supposed" date of the cut at the reduced price. That should save about £70 and net 20 decent games.

The 9 points is a bit misleading though, some of our rivals sort of gave up towards the end. It'll be closer this season I think.

agree. i think man utd and chelsea will be neck and neck all the way again with arsenal and man city there or there abouts but without genuinely threatening. think chelsea will go ahead early season and man utd catch up when their fixtures clear up then both teams (and even torres!) to hit top form for the final third and push each other all the way.

The way the prices are this year there is a good spread of players being picked. I can see the value of your team this year being more important.

For example when RVP doesn't score for the first 3 GWs there will be a lot of people jumping ship. I'll come along and get him for 11.7 or 11.8 🙂

Why would RVP not score for the first three GWs? Didn't he get 2 goals away at Newcastle last season? Perhaps he will score in all three gameweeks, go up to 12.2 and you can't afford him for the home game v Swansea.

A lot of people have Bent and Silva which costs 19.5M for the Villa and City attacking coverage. Having N'Zogbia and Aguero at 18.5M to provide the same coverage doesn't seem too bad.

If Villa are all defensive and City come out all guns blazing against Swansea it could be a great combo.

nah, I don't see it that way. I think you need the individual who will get the most points. So that means going for the one good person in a weak team, or the most prolific in a good team.

I'd say Bent has to be the focal point for Villa, and ... actually, here:

      Fulham - Zamora
      Villa - Bent
      Liverpool - Suarez/Carroll
      Man U - Rooney
      Everton - Baines/Cahill
Chelsea + Man City - TBA

I'm gonna take my own advice on this one, and allowing for fixtures, I'm gonna stick in as many of those as I can.

I agree on most of those; I have Zamora and Rooney....at the moment A.Cole is winning over Baines but that may change. I want Suarez at some point but will wait out the first week.

But just for the first GW I can see the N’Zogbia/Aguero combo being worth the risk, I can always change to Suarez in GW2 if Aguero flops.

Basically Bent wasn't in my long term plans anyway.....Rooney, RVP and Suarez is my ideal front line and N'Zogbia should do well.

Am I the only OCD FPL manager who has to, HAS TO, have their GW1 team in order of Value from left to right on the transfer screen?

You have no idea how much trouble I go to to ensure this. The slightest tweak and I am saving and resaving just so it goes from High to Low, Left to Right.
