Our Friday evening analysis of the armband options in the Gameweek ahead comes around again. The three-part approach, which takes in the weekly poll standings, the Opta player statistics and our Rate My Team projections, will hopefully help to steer your thoughts on the Captain conundrum.

The first section is free to view for all visitors to the site and will analyse the chief protagonists, as selected in our Captain Poll. The latter two parts are restricted to our members, as we delve deeper into the Opta and Rate My Team data.

Captain Poll

Judging by the voting in this week’s Captain Poll, there’s no real standout candidate as we head towards Gameweek 5. United’s Wayne Rooney just edges it at the summit – ahead of a trip to Leicester, he receives just over 21% of votes cast after grabbing a goal and assist in last week’s comprehensive home win over QPR.

Team-mate Angel di Maria picked up similar returns against the R’s and has persuaded 17% to hand him the captaincy – only just less than Chelsea’s prolific Diego Costa. Despite firing seven goals in four appearances, most Fantasy managers reckon the summer signing faces a tough task to continue his scoring streak as the Blues roll up to the Etihad, with many fearing Jose may park the bus again.

Further down, Emmanuel Adebayor, with a mere 7% FPL ownership, offers a strong differential alternative. Rested from Tottenham’s midweek Europa League match, he takes on an out-of-sorts West Brom backline that that conceded two or more goals in three out of four matches under new manager, Alan Irvine. Radamel Falcao also find a place in the top five for United’s visit to the King Power Stadium, despite finding himself on the bench last weekend.

Elsewhere, a trio of highly-owned midfielders are also in consideration. Gylfi Sigurdsson has delivered 16 points in his two appearances at the Liberty ahead of the visit of Southampton, whilst Aaron Ramsey – similar to the Swans playmaker – has scored or assisted in three of his four appearances as Arsenal make their way to Villa. After being rested from the starting XI last weekend, Raheem Sterling is a sure starter for Liverpool’s trip to West Ham – two goals in three appearances in the Reds’ starting line-up bodes well against a backline yet to keep out their opponents.

Danny Welbeck is the highest Arsenal player in this week’s Poll as the Gunners attempt to break down the league’s most resilient defence. Yet to open his account for Arsene Wenger’s side, the deadline-day signing is backed by over 4% of your votes – more than Sergio Aguero ahead of City’s clash with Chelsea, despite the Argentine scoring in three of his four league appearances.

Why do you even put yourself in this situation? Buy a cheap midfielder or forward and stick with your game plan.

            awful logic.
"don't buy bench depth because then you don't have options... when you have options, you can choose wrong"

as though eliminating choice makes your players better.

Totally agree, having a team with 15 playing players is a great advantage.
Filling the bench with deadwood to chase a perfect 11 is stupid.

            Disagree
You bench the player that you think will score the least points that GW, benching by player prices is a terrible tactic.

Keepers perfect. Personally I'd go for Bego instead though as he has great fixtures up until gw13 and you'd avoid the double up of SOU defense.

If I were you I'd do Baines>Kolarov for gw6 and gw7 and then back again gw8. totally worth the risk with the solid backup incase he doesn't start and affordable for you too. PVA is a short-term pick as his fixtures fall away after gw7 i think.

midfield looks great. not sure about chadli as his fixtures are abit up-and-down with arsenal away in gw6 unless you plan on benching him for that fixture anyways.

i like the front line but i'd sooner see adebayor-naismith and then downgrade adebayor to pelle next week.

      Hope that helps.

I'm benching Fabregas this weekend (ghasp!). Clyne is in as well as I think both teams will score but he has a better chance of getting assists than Naylor. Bit of an awkward fixture due to having Siggy vs Clyne but I'm really looking forward to it being a good attacking spectacle as both teams like to play quick attacking football.

I was pretty confident about benching Fab, but that goal midweek unsettled me a bit. An assist I can forgo, but if Jose sets up defensively, then Fab should play further up imo. Still benching him though.
Agree about the Swansea game, should be a cracker! Cheers.

Very helpful thanks, not sure about Bego as I really do like Southampton's defense and I don't consider a double up for them toooo bad. Im sort of hesitant on Baines > Kolarov as he's burned me almost every GW this season especially that week i (C) him but its a good idea and one im possibly open to. Yeah I'd probably bench Chadli in GW6 and i've been think about Naismith-Ade instead of Pelle-Welbz but ultimately I think the latter have good points potential in the upcoming GWs and having Chadli should give me some sort of spurs coverage for their nice run of fixtures.

Your team actually looks great,i'm loving the balance everywhere as you mix in a few calculated punts with proven performers. Not a big Lovren fan, I feel like if you want a pool defender then it has to be Moreno but if you arent on a WC this is not huge concern so anyway once again, looks very good and defo good to go

        1. rickardinho
          • 11 Years

          Thanks to you too.

Regarding Kolarov, you can only have yourself to blame that he burned you. He was never gonna play regularly in the opening stretch as he doesn't play the tough games most of the time, but against lesser teams he's a good asset to have imo, so gw6-7 is the time to get him in, especially if the alternative is playing bainesy away to united and liverpool.

Agree on Moreno, but I picked Lovren from GW1 as he was the most nailed option and also offers attacking threat on set pieces. I'm gonna try to keep him so I can have him and Baines as my 1-2 punch in defense and Chambers and the others rotating. Moreno would be my pick if I was on a WC though. Don't forget about Manquillo btw, he's a real good under-the-radar points getter and even got a bonus point in the loss against Villa.

I'm gonna be treading water for a couple of weeks with minor moves (krul and wisdom out for mccarthy and moore) while holding onto my floating 2nd FT until I need it. Baines and Walcott will be coming in soon too, as well as Pelle or Adebayor. Got it all planned out 🙂

I think i'll do what I did with Walcott last year, as soon as Wenger mentions Walcott being back I will get him. I got Wally four weeks before his two goal efforts against city and started him each week prior for his short cameos but the feeling of jubilation when the waiting paid off was awesome

Cheers Davies, if Mata does start this week then you look all set for a nice week but if you somehow recieve word that he wont then I think Vaz Te > Pelle will be worth the hit...it actually might be either way. Aside from that lone suggestion the rest looks nice with Colo as your weakest link but surely a CS for the magpies against Hull is plausible. Good to go

Love the Baines pick, wish I could squeeze him in myself. Pelle/Welbeck seems a little bit light up top, I suspect you'll be swapping out one of your Chelsea boys to upgrade Welbeck in the near future. Brace yourself for weekly benching dilemmas.

    My team:

    Mannone, McCarthy
    Rafael, Bertrand, Taylor, Duff, Moore
    Hazard, Sterling, Sigurdsson, Chadli, Boyd
    Aguero, Costa, Rooney

Ah I see, maybe I should consider Fabregas > a cheaper mid to afford a Welbeck upgrade. You look very solid and that front line is formidable. Not a big Duff fan and if you're on a WC i'd rather have Moore or Hutton but that Rafael pick could be a fantastic one if he nails down a consistent spot, I remember when he was churning out great scores on a weekly basis. Otherwise you look all set and if you do happen to be on a WC, do Naylor > PvA

    All good to go?
    1 FT, .5 ITB.

    Begovic, (McCarthy)
    Janmaat, N.Taylor, Moreno (Clyne, Moore)
Di Maria (C), Fabregas, Sterling, Siggy (Tadic)
    Costa, Balotelli (VC), Naismith

Going for ADM as C due to Liecester not being great at the back, United finding form and Di Maria's involvement in pretty much all their goals last week, thoughts?

2 FT next week to rearrange

He's a puzzle for me. He can play better and he knows it but something is keeping him down. Playing OOP can't be a reason. He used to play on the wings at real sometimes and performed well.

A bit annoyed at myself for dishing Caulker out when he didn't end up dropping this week. Brought Naylor in but now I'm thinking Evans would have been a better choice since I have 0.5 that will just be lying around until I bring Baines in and he's got great fixtures.

Can someone try to cheer me up please 🙁

Naylor could score! You could change your plans on Baines and you will have an extra 0.5 to play with.

Naylor will be benched unfortunately 🙂

        Clyne could score though! lol

I suppose thats true about the 0.5 wiggle room. I have 0.9 itb and it just happens that that is the difference between Sturridge and Rooney right now... might be tempting in a couple of weeks time

Albrighton didn't have a spot to begin with. He has to fight for it, and we have better options right now. Stay clear. Schlupp will keep his place as long as we keep playing well, however I think eventually he will once again become an impact player.

      Ulloa costs 5.6m
In your estimation, what is his true value, in price terms? I'd easily still be in the market at say 6.5m He seems like an easy decision. .. am I misreading his capacity to keep up the goals?

Also, is Schlupp going to warrant fantasy attention? He's very entertaining to watch.

      1. davies
        • 11 Years
        11 years, 4 months ago

Ulloa is arguably our only consistent goal scorer and has proven to be a great goal scorer. So no, he can keep up the goals. Schlupp is a tricky one, he's entertaining to watch but isn't traditionally a starter and could lose his place at any time.
