We delve into the Gameweek 5 data this evening in our first members article of the week. Wayne Rooney’s new role for United comes under analysis, as do Burnley and Leicester’s displays up front, whilst a couple of north London-based frontmen are also placed under the microscope after their contrasting weekend performances.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

I need to get rid of Chester, Bojan, Rio and possibly Mata's as can't afford to have bench warmers.

    Which looks best?

    1) Chester & Bojan for Moore and Ulloa this week leaving 0.0 in bank.

    2) Mata > ADM, Rooney > Pelle and Bojan > Ulloa this week for 4 point hit, and play Clyne (QPR) , Wisdom (BUR) and Taylor (sun) and have 1.3 to sort out defence next week

    3) Just Mata > ADM, Rooney > Pelle for free.

    Thanks

Thing is I'll probably then bench Ulloa (cry) this week as I'll have midfield of:

Ramsey (TOT), ADM (WHU), Sterling (EVE) , Fábregas (AVL) Sigurdsson (sun)

Unless you think I should bench Siggy?

          • 12 Years

He is miles above Mariappa, but I still think our best back line would put Fryers at LB and Ward back to his natural position at RB leaving Kelly on the bench. When this happens though is anybody's guess - could be in months. If pressed, though, I would expect Kelly to retain his place against Leicester, yeah. He played pretty well at Goodison. Keep an eye on who plays for us midweek - if Kelly is rested then he will surely start.

    @Alegendi

    The YAYA problem

Gameweek 3 attacking stats for every player in every position

    http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/4671/
and his avg position for that week (higher than Jovetic)
    http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/matches/755327/

GW4 he didn't play and last week was against Chelsea so a little tricky to say the least...I'd be more concerned about the GW3 stats than any other stats as non owner..

Yaya will come good against lesser opposition than Chelsea...

    A) Naisy > Ulloa
    B) Ramsey + Chester > ADM + WIsdom -4

Leaning towards A, really not confident on Naismiths gametime and LEI fixtures are good. Only a bit worried that I have no United players, but they are a bit of an unpredictable mess right now.

Chambers vs. Moreno is a complete wash for this weekend, and of course bench Chambers GW7, but whenever I plan a transfer a couple weeks down the line usually I have some other horrible thing happen and my plans get dashed. Can do it now when you have the luxury to - who knows if you suffer a couple injuries, the intl' break also before GW8, who knows...lots of variables, you will be happy to have Chambers in for the long term 😀 Good luck either way tho!

Moreno out for sure. I had him for 2 GWs and his ass is gone. So important to realise you've made a mistake and rectify quickly despite good fixtures. LFC would concede against a pub team atm.
PVA for me as I would look to get Chambers GW8, and defo roll the 2nd transfer.

    3. Walsh
      • 12 Years
      11 years, 2 months ago

No. That is pure speculation, at this point, he is very much second choice and I can't think that Mou has said anything for us to think otherwise. They have a very heavy fixture pileup and a pretty thin back line depth-wise. It would take an injury for him to crack the first team, I reckon. However, he has the benefit of probably if there is an injury to ANY of their current back four he can slot in at LB as Ivan can move to CB if a CB gets hurt and Azpil can move to RB if Ivan gets hurt.

Reading Chelsea forums (forgive me for my sins) Ivanovic has been woeful recently in his defensive play. Luis similarly has an attacking eye. For 20million he seems to be a bit of a waste of money but that's peanuts to Chelsea in this day and age I suspect.

        1. Walsh
          • 12 Years
          11 years, 2 months ago

Nobody would disagree that Ivan has been woeful defensively, but it's not as though it's been costing Chelsea in the table....Mou clearly giving him that license to go forward so he likely understands that leaves the defense more exposed than if he had him stay home more. It's not as if Ivan is just roaming forward into the box on his own accord - Mou has to be giving him such instructions. Or not. 🙂 Just can't see him making that switch, but I could be well off the mark, mate. Wouldn't be the first time!!

Early days. We've been bedding in a new team. You should've lost to Leicester and ran into some luck in that Villa were puking all over themselves at the weekend.

And meanwhile we're bedding in a new manager, players and system/philosophy. I would bet the house on us finishing above you if I had an extra house to bet.

Is United attack even necessary? The goals are likely to be spread around numerous premium priced assets.

    Falcao 11m
    RVP 12.4m
    Rooney 10.4m
    ADM 9.8m
    Mata 8.8m
    Herrera 7.3m

Of these 6 players I don't believe we can pinpoint a particular individual that is likely to have significantly higher goal involvement than any of the other 5. For this reason I don't believe any United player represents good value. For example at Chelsea we know Costa is going to score the bulk of the goals with the whole attack revolving around him as the lone striker. By contrast United's trifecta system with CM's bombing forward increases the competition for FPL points within the side.

Well obviously RVP and Rooney won't score goals or assist anymore. Herrera is just a DM who won't do anything and Mata will stay on the bench all season and not do anything at all.

One of Rooney/RVP will be dropped. Herrera will as well if he continues to poach ala Mata instead of doing his job winning the battle in midfield, which Mata's already been dropped for so.

I'm really not. I'm just assessing where we're at and the seemingly obvious Big Lou will have to make if his balls are indeed as big as everyone says they are.

I think its different now with the new signings having been bedded in and now starting. Rooney and RVP have diminished in importance I think. I don't believe anyone particularly stands out.

I don't have any United players, and I'm not particularly bothered by it at the moment. Falcao appeals to me but not quite yet.

See I think Kun appeals more because clearly he is the main goal scorer at Citeh. Nobody can say who the main goal scorer is at United, there are too many.

I mean Kun is my favorite player in the Prem. I love that man and will always have him as long as he's in the league and healthy, you are preaching to the choir 🙂

Yeah I'm thinking Costa, Kun and Pelle/Welbeck is the way to go. Anyone who is likely to have a high goal involvement in their team, particularly if they are high scoring teams is the better way to go.

They will be cannibalising each others points for all Uniteds goals. Not a fan of tripling up for this very reason.

Totally agree with this. Its one reason why I am not jumping on the DiMaria wagon and also sold Rooney yesterday. They may become better value later in the season if injury strikes and other top teams rotate more, but at the moment its hard to go for anyone of those 3 strikers when there are players like Pelle and Welbeck nailed-on and performing well for much cheaper.

As for the midfield options, Mata is surely not an option any more due to being benched, and I doubt Herrera will have any consistent output to justify that price over someone like Tadic who will play further forward and without any risk of being benched.

I can sort of understand the clamor for ADM, but he's not a goal-scorer by trade (only 4 all of last season with RM) so I see his two strikes as anomalies personally. His number of shots and touches in the box would suggest this is a fair conclusion. If you buy him for his assist potential I think Fabregas and Ramsey are both better options with better fixtures soon, not to mention the returning Walcott.

In summary, there's too much value in the 8.5-9.0m midfield and 7.5m striker brackets to betaking risks with United players when there is still a lot of uncertainty with how they will set up going forwards.

I agree with you about rooney but not di maria. I think the English league will be easier for ADM to score goals in lots of opposition teams are gung ho.

I think you make some decent arguments but sort of miss your own point. ADM is a must pick because he will start every game, unlike the front 3 IMHO, and is everything that's good about united in attack. United will score goals and ADM will be heavily involved. If you want some united exposure, he's the only player I can see any value.

And I'd love see you show me some value in the 6.5-9.0m bracket outside of Sterling.

The competition to be amongst the goals at United makes them all poor value when everyone is fit. 5 of those 6 will start every week and they are all likely to be involved spreading the points amongst them.

"How do you solve a problem like DI Maria"

The moderators need lessons in writing a good headline.

I am likely to switch to ADM because he is a midfielder and not one of the precious strikers. That way its not as risky to pick him. Falcoa and RVP are horrendously overpriced. Rooney may pull through from deeper but its safer to observe for now as your point is valid.

Di Maria will be involved in most goals imo. I think RVP/Falcoa will be the highest goal scorers.

There, that's half the options gone 🙂

Any quantitative analysis of this idea? I think it's potentially interesting, but without any numbers it's a pretty big claim without any evidence at all...

Falcao, ADM, Herrera are new signings who have made an immediate impact and have featured on the score sheet. RVP, Rooney and Mata were the main goal scorers last year. Therefore we now have twice as many players who are capable of scoring goals and getting assists. Based on the few games where all 6 have been involved 'quantitative analysis' is obviously limited. I'm using another form of analysis, that of observation.
