Having previously assessed the form of forwards and midfielders across the last four Gameweeks, our third Key Performance Indicator (KPI) article of the international break casts an eye over the defenders.

For the unfamiliar, these Key Performers Indicator (KPI) tables use a series of key stats to allow our members to track a trend in player performance as a guide to their form. By tracking the frequency of certain key statistics, such as minutes per chance, and comparing them over two separate periods of time, we can ascertain patterns of improvement or decline in these areas. For those unfamiliar, we’ve rolled out a preview movie which shows just how to get the best out of the KPI tables.

    Early ideas on this lot?

    Elliot ᵍᵏ Krul
    Moore ᵈ Duff ᵈ Baines ᵈ Clyne ᵈ Chester
Hazard ᵐ Di María ᵐ Sánchez ᵐ Albrighton ᵐ Sigurdsson
Sakho ᶠ Pellè ᶠ Diego Costa

2 FT, £1.5m in the bank.

Sahko, ADM, Baines are the main issues along with no Aguero.

    Thanks for any replies.

Chadli or Downing was the early plan. Sahko & Albrighton could be trouble this week.

ADM + Pelle --> Costa + Don't know how much you will be left with

      or

for a hit include Baines so that you get Azpi/Cahill and can have a stronger Mid

I too have the same issues, though w/ Aguero & opting for Costa soon.

W/ 2 FT's & an if Sakho & AdM will miss the game, a hit may suffice for you & in your case may very well payoff

      Sahko --> Austin
      AdM ---> Downing
      Pelle --> Aguero

Albrighton a minor concern, the following week I'd take nice little peek at your bench.

Next GW I'm looking to do, for free:
    Clyne > Naylor
    Moore > Caulker

    It leaves me with:

    Courtois 4.0
    Baines Caulker Naylor Wisdom Saylor
    Sanchez ADM Siggy Chadli Albrighton
    Aguero Costa Sakho

    0.2 ITB

The defense is a perfect rotation until January. With Courtois and Baines, too, it should be sufficient until the WC.

Any suggestions or possible transfers I should look at? Thanks, all.

Nice, looks solid to me. I have a very similar defense (i.e. baines clyne naylor chambers wisdom) and will be keeping Clyne as I think he's still great value and think there's CS's and attacking points in his next few fixtures, especially MUN, bur, EVE, cpl, but this makes sense as well.

If you decided to keep Clyne then Moore>Yun would be a solid move to get into that QPR defense cheaply, and would also save you a FT for use elsewhere.

Btw, amazing timing on that article above lol,... clyne vs ivanovic is highlighted pretty clearly in red and green 😉

1FT and £1.6m in the bank. Doing some planning for the next 2-3 gameweeks. How does the following sound?
    This week: save
    Next week: Bego>Guzan & Tadic > Downing
    Week after: Pelle>Costa & Clyne>Azpil for a -4

Obviously this is depenant on injuries and form etc. Fairly drastic to get rid of all 3 Soton, but they will drop in price so I can get them back. Thanks

    Bego
    Baines Clyne Chambers
    ADM Sanchez Tadic Siggy
    Aguero(c) Pelle Berahino

    Bench - Duff, Marney, Wisdom

Now we're talking. Have you made any transfers this week?

Of course you should want Sanchez in your team, but it's difficult and you have other issues too. One of Forster or Clyne has to go IMO. Tadic too. How much do you need to raise to do Tadic>Sanchez?

I wouldn't be hitting to do Hazard>Sanchez, if that's what you're asking. Not sure I'd even do that for a free

          1. Incredibale
            • 11 Years
            11 years, 29 days ago

Tadic will go next week, Already Done Rooney to Costa this week for a free. Need .4 more for tadic to Sanchez . One of Coleman or Forster will need to go for that. Does Coleman to Azpi and Tadic to Sanchez for -4 sound good

            1. FionnMac
              • 15 Years
              11 years, 29 days ago

Like I said, I'd get rid of one of Clyne/Forster. At the same time, I like Azpi and want him myself, but you can't have 'em all!

Forster>Guzan is a poss. I'd prefer to do Forster>Fabianski but don't think that gives you enough. Baines&Coleman is bold, but I like it 🙂

Think ill do Forster to Guzan , only thing that worries me about spending 11 on sanchez is that I dont ill be captaining him often atleast with Chelsea and City fixtures coming up

Yeah fair point. If you play 442 though, you need some of your midfielders to be big-hitters. And Sanchez is a big hitter alright

Here's some evidence of my plan working:

Using fpl statistico, I can see that I've benched the following players, and their respective points total the GW(s) they were benched:

          Fabregas - 2
          Tadic - 1
          Siggy(x2) - 5
          Downing - 2
          Naismith - 6
          Davis - 1
          Bojan - 1
Oscar (x2) - 11 (one of these times was by accident though as my team picks didn't save when i was out travelling, when he got 10 vs QPR, so doesn't count really).. so 1.
          Costa - 0 (injured so auto-subbed).

As such, out of my 10 benchings (ignoring the accidental oscar one), I've only lost 19 points by avoiding bad fixtures, while my other fwd's have scored better.

Of course there's also price considerations when money is locked into your bench, but with so many good budget options this year I don't think its a big factor at all.

Hah, that's the one. I'm not just trolling, I like your posts on here, but people in general on here (and in many walks of life) seem to put way too much emphasis on short term results. There is a HUGE luck factor in FF. Getting Austin in over Sakho may well have been the best move, but that's not a given. What if Sakho hadn't picked up another knock this week? What if he recovers for next week and scores in the next 3? Tough to say.

Guna wait for pressers, then make my changes. But should nothing change, how does this sounds?

    Cesc & Sakho -> Hazard & Austin (-4)?

Alternatively could go for Ayoze over Sakho?

He looks like he's picking up a bit of form. Penalty duty aswell.. What do you think to the change? I could do Cesc -> Hazard without taking a hit.. But Sakho is the player I'm most concerned about.

    Best Silva Replacement?

    Too Early for Wally
Can't afford Sanchez (and don't intend to get him)
Sterling is a worry with Sturridge being injured again

Other Mids are: Hazard, Chadli, Downing, Albrighton

will have 9.2m to replace Silva....

Does anyone think that the prophets of doom apropos Southampton's fixtures are overstating the problem?

    Is anyone keeping their saints?

I have Clyne, Tadic, and Pelle, and I don't really want to sell any of them.

Where is it written that they won't perform against stronger teams? They beat the Arsenal in the Worthington Cup, didn't they?

Doubt Clyne will get you CS in any of the next 3 (MCI, ars, MUN).
Tadic flatters to deceive & has nothing notable contribution other than that GW 8. Pelle doesn't have even single shot on target in last 3 & his fixtures were STK, hul, LEI.

Re: Tadic... by that same token Hazard has done absolutely nothing except for score two penalties... Nobody can say Tadic didn't deserve 1g+6a with the underlying stats he has.

Penalties do count & Chelsea will get plenty of them, much more than Saints anyway.

Hazard has the proven pedigree in FPL & collected about 400 Points in the past 2 seasons. Sometimes you do need to watch football rather looking into stats all the time. Hazard is a class above Tadic, by some distance.

Tadic is on pens as well, and I'd argue that with players like Mane and Long, plus fullbacks who always scream into the box at pace, Saints could get more pens than Chelsea. In fact, they should have had one vs Newcastle when Krul completely decked Long on the edge of the box. Mane also won one at the Emirates in the cup fwiw.

Btw, you should avoid making erroneous assumptions about how much other people watch football.

Since you asked... I've watched 6 of Chelsea's PL games live and the rest on one hour highlight reels (the sky "match choice", plus all 4 of their CL games live. (Not a Chelsea fan btw! 🙂 )

Ignore fixtures at your peril. It's written in the history of fpl seasons and in the complex algorithms that make up the various ratings engines that on average tougher fixtures = less points.

As with all distributions sometimes there are outliers that buck the trend but you playing against the odds my friend. You need to lose at least 1 if not 2 of those IMO

Thanks for the sobering advice. Maybe I'll get rid of 1 of the 3 (Pelle? - since Tadic is on penalties and Clyne offers attacking potential of the Baines/Coleman/Ivanovic variety).

its all about alternatives and how other players score as compared to the saint players. given a choice will u get austin/bony etc with great fixtures or stick with pelle who has tough fixtures? even if pelle gets an assist every game i will still fancy my replacement to do even better. similarly clyne might return a clean sheet or 2, but in the long term i fancy someone else to do better

its not the end of the world if u keep your saint..but i do feel i will miss out on bigger points which i could earn if i get other players.

Cheers. I like the moves you suggest, but why not sell Fabregas instead? I was looking at three options:

            A) Fabregas -> Sanchez, Baines -> Azpilicueta
            B) Fabregas -> Sanchez, Pelle -> Austin (if Baines is fit)
            C) Fabregas -> Sanchez, ADM -> Hazard, Baines -> Azpilicueta for a -4 hit (Leaves me with 0 in the bank, so might have to do it tonight.)
