Scout Scribbles – Lukaku Saves Toffees’ Blushes

Romelu Lukaku’s late leveller keeps Everton in the FA Cup after a 1-1 home draw with West Ham. Leighton Baines and Andy Carroll head into the weekend as injury doubts after missing out at Goodison. Luke Shaw and Daley Blind could return for United’s clash with Southampton, reports grow of a possible move to City for Wilfried Bony, whilst Wojciech Szczesny looks poised to be re-installed between the sticks for Arsenal this weekend.

LATE LUKAKU STRIKE KEEPS EVERTON’S HOPES ALIVE

Everton boss Roberto Martinez made three changes to his side for their FA Cup meeting with West Ham last night, returning to a flat back-four after recently trialling three in defence. Sylvain Distin, Bryan Oviedo and Romelu Lukaku were brought in, with the latter notching a 92nd-minute leveler to earn his side a replay.

Distin sustained a groin problem and was forced off after 71 minutes of the tie, whist Leighton Baines missed out entirely with a knock, though Martinez confirmed that he expects the left-back to be fit in time for their weekend clash with City:

“Baines picked up a knock in the last game – it’s nothing serious, we’re just making sure he’s fully fit and we’re not taking any risks. Expect him to be available for the weekend.”

The Scout Says: Despite the late celebrations, there’s no doubt that this is still a troubling time for the Toffees, who have won just once in their last nine domestic matches. To compound matters, the Merseysiders are rated second worst in our ticker for the next five fixtures, which involves encounters with City, Liverpool and Chelsea, suggesting that their toils could well continue. Lukaku will be optimistic that his strike will see him recalled in the league after having had to settle for a bench role in the last two Gameweeks, though he, like Baines, is unlikely to tempt much investment with the Toffees’ schedule and form in mind, with many current owners likely to ditch the duo’s services with their winter Wildcards.

HAMMERS PEGGED BACK

Sam Allardyce opted to make four changes to his West Ham team for last night’s cup clash, with Alex Song, Diafra Sakho, Cheik Kouyate and Andy Carroll those to drop out in favour of Matt Jarvis, Kevin Nolan, Enner Valencia and Mark Noble. James Collins retained his place in the Hammers’ backline, despite the availability of James Tomkins, and netted the opener from a Morgan Amalfitano corner.

Post-match, Big Sam revealed that Carroll missed out with a foot injury sustained in training:

“Andy kicked the floor in training and obviously his foot’s a bit sore so we didn’t bring him with us. We didn’t (want to) risk the fact that if he’d played today it would’ve probably got worse.”

In better news, however, it has been confirmed that Song will now miss the African Cup of Nation (ACoN) with Cameroon and be available for the Hammers throughout January, after announcing his retirement from international football.

The Scout Says: Is it possible for Carroll to go a couple of months without picking up a fresh injury? His Fantasy owners will be despairingly asking that question, with his role in this weekend’s trip to Swansea now hanging in the balance. With Sakho either injured or jetting off to the ACoN, Allardyce will be desperate to have the big Geordie fit as soon as possible, though a prolonged absence could see Valencia profit; the 6.4-valued forward looks set for a return to the starting XI in the league anyway, though could be the sole focus of the Hammers’ attack if no other striker is available to line up beside him. Big Sam will at least take comfort in Song’s imminent return from Africa, with the Barcelona loanee now set to hand the Londoners a major boost in the middle of the park. Meanwhile, yesterday’s match saw Stewart Downing draw his fourth consecutive blank in all competitions, and with the Hammers’ problems building ahead of him in attack, an exodus of his 25% ownership could be on the cards, bearing in mind his next six (swa, HUL, liv, MNU, sou, tot).

BONY TRANSFER RUMOURS INTENSIFY

A number of reports yesterday revealed that Swansea striker Wilfried Bony is on the verge of a £30 million transfer to Man City after the two clubs entered talks earlier this week.

The Scout Says: Manuel Pellegrini insinuated at the start of the month that City could do business in the January transfer window, and it’s seemingly taken little time for the Chilean to put his money where his mouth is. The Bony news will, however, dishearten many Fantasy managers, with the forward’s potential position in the Sky Blues’ pecking order a major drawback; with Sergio Aguero clearly the number one when fit, the Ivorian will surely be prone to rotation with Stevan Jovetic and Edin Dzeko, thus seriously denting the prospects of an asset who has proven so reliable over the past couple of seasons, scoring nine times already in the current campaign. Back at Swansea, meanwhile, life without Bony will surely be tough, though Bafetimbi Gomis’s prospects at 6.5 could be boosted if Garry Monk doesn’t decide to immediately splash the cash and find a replacement up front – with loanee Nelson Oliveira also in the mix, we could be handed a mid-price option to consider as the Swans leading man, should Bony indeed depart.

MAN UNITED HANDED INJURY BOOST

Reports suggest that Luke Shaw and Daley Blind could be in contention to face Southampton on Sunday after recovering from ankle and knee injuries respectively. The latter has been out of action since November but, having trained with United’s first team for the past two weeks, could now be ready to make his return.

The Scout Says: Having played every minute of the season prior to succumbing to injury, it seems fairly certain that Blind will be reinstated in Louis van Gaal’s first XI as soon as he reaches the right level of fitness. Likely to play alongside Michael Carrick in the middle of the park, his return could have a knock-on effect on Wayne Rooney’s position and see the United captain move behind the front two – after blanking for the past two Gameweeks, such a scenario would be welcome news for the 10.8-priced striker’s 22.5% ownership. With Angel Di Maria also in contention to start after a goalscoring substitute appearance against Yeovil Town in the FA Cup, United are beginning to build themselves back to full strength, and now have the fixtures in hand to flourish over their next six (SOU, qpr, LEI, whm, BUR, swa). It’s hard to see how Juan Mata might fit into their set-up now, though, and the Reds top scoring midfielder could find that his minutes are far from guaranteed from here on in.

SZCZESNY EYES STOKE START

Wojciech Szczesny is expected to return to Arsenal’s starting XI this weekend, despite off-field problems having supposedly jeopardised his place.

The Scout Says: Recent rumours surrounding the goalkeeper – which suggested he was set to be dropped for an indefinite period after a dressing room fall-out with Arsene Wenger – appear to be unfounded, then, with the 4.8-priced David Ospina now likely to return to the bench after being handed a start in the Gunners FA Cup win over Hull. The north London outfit have three great home fixtures in their next five (STK, AVL, LEI) to boost their appeal, though with a little uncertainty still surrounding the situation between the sticks , Mathieu Debuchy (5.2) and Per Metersaker (6.0) are still the most secure and stand-out options in their defensive ranks.

I need some advice on transfers this week.

    2FT & 0.3 ITB

    Panti/Elliot
    JT/Baines/Wasilewski/Hutton/Yun
    Alexis/Haz/YYT/Silva/Marney
    Kane/Austin/Costa

With Baines now flagged looking to use both FT. Thinking this:

    YYT ==> ADM
    Baines ==> Berty

    Thoughts?

Don't know about anyone else, but I'm fully jumping off the Man City train.

I have Zabaleta and Silva at the moment, and think I'll use both my FT's to ditch them.

Man City have been poor the last few games, and Everton away, Arsenal and Chelsea in the next 3, there is far better value to be had elsewhere.

Zabaleta's 0 points in home games against Burnely and Sunderland was shocking.

And now Man City actually have a fit striker, Silva will revert to assisting the assist.

Now, the only question is who to bring in instead...

Football can be unpredictable like that. Who's to say Lukaku's rescuing a reply against West Ham won't serve as some catalyst to spur Everton to win [or even a boring 0-0 draw] against City.

Or they could just continue to be hopeless in defense.

Lukaku looked best he has all season last night. Shame some of the others took the night off. Everton may have seen signs last night that could spark a return of confidence. Still won't be buying any Blues players yet though!

Similar boat. I think ditching Zaba is the priority - they look poor in defence and there is a chance he gets rotated. I actually think eve, ARS are decent fixtures for City from an attacking sense - Everton are all over the shop at the moment and Arsenal like to play an attacking game regardless of opposition (see the 6-3 defeat to them not long ago).

Down to these 4 - whatcha think?

Note - plan is to WC after the deadline on 17Jan.

    Bank 0.1m and 2 FT

    A) Zaba -> Debuchy
    B) Zaba & Downing -> Wasilewski & Walcott (benching Austin)
    C) Zaba & Austin -> 4.6m* (Morgan/Wasilewski) & Giroud
    D) Something else

    * is it too late for Schlupp?

    Hart
    Terry, Zaba, Wisdom
    Sanchez, Hazard, Silva, Eriksen
    Costa, Kane, Austin

    Elliot, Downing, Hutton, Chambers

Definitely agree on ditching Zabaleta. Haven't decided who for yet. Man United have decent fixtures, maybe Evans...

Wouldn't sell Austin just yet, I'm giving him one more game against his former club!

Schlupp is a doubt with a knee injury, and whilst I haven't seen anything official, he'll most likely be off the AFCON

Otherwise I would also be considering him!

Cheers. Is Evans nailed on though now that Smalling and P Jones are fit? I don't trust that United defence at all, and they offer minimal attacking threat.

Any decent ideas for my lot given I will WC straight after GW22?

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

What to do about Manchester City?

With fixtures stiffening there is arguably a case for ditching some of their assets. But with Aguero returning surely he will be a must have over the next few gameweeks. Plus their fixtures brighten in February when the January wildcard window closes.

In addition what effect will Bony have, once he joins. Will he partner Aguero? Or has he been brought in to cover for Aguero's frequent injuries?

Good luck with that. Arsenal (h) and Chelsea (a) - he might score a goal or two in those games but so might RVP in his games for example. I'm not interested in Aguero till GW24. The only thing that could twist my arm is if his price looks like rising fast.

That's the last four based on Aguero being out and Silva feeding off of Milner as a false 9. A real test of Silva's credentials is how he does in a formation with Aguero as the striker - over the season there have been better options in midfield in terms of goals and assists.

Here's a better indicator. Sort by last six gameweeks or even whole season - Silva's nowhere near some other midfielders.

              http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/3295/

Even Navas and Nasri have had more shots in the box than Silva in the last six.

Silva's been good - but evidence from the season suggests that when Aguero returns there are far better uses of that midfield cash than Silva.

You are extrapolating the wrong data. Silva most likely wont continue in the role that drove these stats once kun back, you need to look back at silva role when kun is playing, ie business as usual

In the end, it is the ratio of shots on target to shots in the box that counts.

Formation and personnel is key when it comes to Silva - he's doing different jobs dependin on how the team is set up.

With Aguero he's the assister of the assister with the occassional goal and assist.

Without Aguero and with Milner up front his focus is much more on scoring. There's no need for him to take that responsibility when Aguero is playing - as Aguero is the best at scoring.

Actually that proves my point not yours. Silva scored that goal while Aguero was off the pitch. Aguero came on in the 83rd minute and Silva scored his in the 37th.

A better example is the West Ham game when Silva scored and Aguero was on the pitch. That is the only time that's happened this season though. Also perhaps its a goal you may not wish to remember 😉

I still think he has one match, perhaps two left. After that he will be gone.

But this is too important to ignore:

I'm inclined to agree given the rotation. Yaya has surprised me in recent weeks - been a great player to own - I'd consider him again when he's back.

This, his form was very dire in early season but now he looks a viable option even with Agüero back and with his lofty price.

Agüero/Dzeko/Jovetic injuries to be covered, but I think if all fit Bony should be behind Jovetic in the pecking order.

Back to just kun i think. Id give it a week or 2 for him to regain sharpness.

Bony i would have thought was there for both cover and as partner for aguero, similar to dzeko but better. Dont know where it will leave dzeko but i think that might be it for him as an option

I only had Yaya and saw City's fixtures turning as soon as he left so never considered Silva as a replacement. I will allow Aguero to regain sharpness during the tough games, and then bring him in after Chelsea. He'll be my only one, as was the case earlier in the season.

At the moment ill be wildcarding in time for Febs games and then its a choice of either going with Silva or Di Maria.

Aguero is a given, so its either double City and no United or Mr Maria.

Fixtures look good for both to be honest so its straight points battle. In all likeness they will score relatively equally but with boths injury record so far i'm sure the decision will probably be made for me.

He's more likely to pass to Zabaleta or Navas so they can get the assist, certainly.

qpr, LEI, whu, BUR, swa, SUN, new is a lovely little run of games.

ARS, che, HUL, sto, NEW, liv is tougher, I would say.

Silva has only been involved in 4 goals in the 11 games he wasn't playing as a 'striker'. 23 goals were scored during those games. I think that's more his norm than what we've just seen.

Like you say though, anything could happen before February.

A conundrum alright. I'll be ditching Zab on WC anyways to fund Aguero. May likely hold on to SIlva and see how it goes. And Jovetic to Aguero is a no brainer 😆 Aguero on the bench could well spell an early WC alright but those next 2 fixtures are pretty tough and he'll likely be eased in.

Will Aguero be a must have once he's back?

Surely 'The Engineer' will take extra care of him and save him for the big games - meaning he might easily miss out on the best fixtures.

There is also the small matter of the games vs Barcelona, which Aguero will surely be rested for, and the purchase of Bony only makes this more likely.

It is going to be a very tricky situation for Aguero owners, as I reckon he will 100% miss some of the 'easier' games.

This is true. But captaining him for braces and hatties in 'light blue/pink' fixtures (see Spurs earlier this season) will make up for the benchings. Also has a history of coming on for 10 minutes and scoring the last goal of the game.

    Andrej Kramaric to Leicester?

Kramarić has been described as versatile striker who is mobile enough to run behind defences and rather than waiting for crosses or ball to come to him, tends to run towards the ball, engulfing his opposition with an air of unpredictability about his play. Although naturally a lone striker his versatility makes him able to play well as winger or second striker.[34] His national team coach Niko Kovač compared him with Croatian legendary striker Davor Šuker.

He also get's the stamp of approval from Forca.

      That's good enough for me.

    GW22: Silva & Austin -> Boyd & Aguero
