After days of speculation, Chelsea confirmed the signing of Fiorentina winger Juan Cuadrado on a four-and-a-half-year contract on Monday evening. Speaking to the club’s official website, the Colombian midfielder – who arrives for a reported fee of £27 millionadmitted that he can’t wait to work under the guidance of Jose Mourinho:

“It is really going to be brilliant to work with one of the best coaches anywhere in the world. I’m very proud to be playing for him and I think he is going to help me grow into a better player…I’m a quick and positive player and I hope to show that on the field of play and help all of my teammates. The best part about this dream is that I’m going to be part of such a big club. For me that is a huge motivation to perform well.”

The History

Cuadrado began his footballing education at Atletico Uraba in his native Colombia, at which point he operated primarily as a forward. His searing pace and ability to outfox defenders prompted a change of position onto the right wing, which ultimately resulted in a move to Colombian first division side Independiente Medellin.

In 2009, Cuadrado made the step up to the European leagues, securing a five-year deal with Italian top-flight side Udinese. After only managing 20 league appearances over the course of the 2009-10 and 2010-11 campaigns, the sprightly winger joined struggling Serie A outfit Lecce in August 2011 in an attempt to salvage his floundering career. Although Lecce eventually succumbed to relegation that season, Cuadrado impressed sufficiently to earn a move to Fiorentina the following summer.

Since his move to Viola, the 26-year-old has been a mainstay in manager Vincenzo Montella’s first XI, earning 68 league outings in the previous two seasons. His 15-goal haul in all competitions last term alerted a bevy of clubs throughout Europe, including La Liga giants Barcelona, who held talks with Cuadrado during the summer transfer window.

Cuadrado also caught the eye with his performances for Colombia at the World Cup in Brazil. The 26-year-old recorded one goal and four assists for Los Cafeteros, tying with Germany’s Toni Kroos as the tournament’s leading assist provider. So far, he’s played for his country on 37 occasions and found the net five times.

The Prospects

With Andre Schurrle packed off to Wolfsburg and Mo Salah heading to Fiorentina on loan, Mourinho is clearly keen to freshen up his options on the right flank. Undoubtedly, Cuadrado’s arrival at Stamford Bridge casts doubt over Willian’s status as one of the regualars in Chelsea’s starting line-up. Although the Brazilian conforms perfectly to the Special One’s desire for industrious two-way wingers that embrace defensive duties, Willian has managed just one goal and two assists over 22 league appearances thus far. Cuadrado’s inclusion could transform the south London outfit into an even more terrifying prospect on the counter-attack.

Cuadrado boasts the ability to initiate powerful, sinuous runs that put opposition defenders on the back foot. Compared with Willian, the attacking stats are stacked firmly in his favour: so far this season, Cuadrado has bettered the Brazilian for minutes per shot (27.3 to 39.8) and key passes (40.2 to 67). Furthermore, his work ethic is also superior – he’s ahead of Willian for tackles (1.2 to 1.1) and interceptions (0.9 to 0.4) per appearance over 2014/15, highlighting just why Mourinho has brought him on board.

The South American possesses the versatility to play in any of the front three positions in Chelsea’s typical 4-2-3-1 formation, as evidenced by Cuadrado’s recent minutes in the second striker role for Fiorentina. Certainly, this affords Mourinho the opportunity to rotate the likes of Eden Hazard and Oscar should he wish to do so, though whilst the latter has been victim to his manager’s tinkering on occasion this term, the Belgian looks immune to Jose’s rotational whims.

Setting you back 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League, the new boy has been placed in the same price bracket as the likes of Oscar, Christian Eriksen, Santi Cazorla and Raheem Sterling. Given that Oscar, Hazard and Cesc Fabregas sit amongst the top five regular midfielders in terms of points per appearance this season, Cuadrado faces a tough task to battle past that trio as our preferred route into Mourinho’s flourishing midfield. On the other hand, Willian’ paltry 2.8 points per appearance suggests the Colombian could be the answer if Mourinho is looking for more output from the right flank.

The inclusion of another potent goal threat in Chelsea’s side might also impact Fabregas’ already astonishing assist output. With the Spaniard (37.4%) just edging out Eden Hazard (36.2%) in terms of ownership, we’ll be keeping a close eye on how Cuadrado’s presence on the pitch influences this internal contest. Having weathered the storm from their title rivals Manchester City, Chelsea now face a favourable run of fixtures up until their blank Gameweek 27, consisting of a visit to Aston Villa and home ties against Everton and Burnley.

These matches could serve as a perfect introduction to the unique rigours of the Premier League for Cuadrado and potentially allow Mourinho to rest some key players before the Capital One Cup Final on March 1, as the Blues look to avenge their New Year’s Day mauling at the Lane and pick up the first silverware of the season.

Walters is an expensive fifth mid to have on your bench every week. You may do well to go for a cheaper option and either keep the money in the bank or reinvest into defense or something. Depends how much you value him for GW27 though.

Yeah mate. He will be nailed with reasonable attacking ability and he's cheap as chips. You will need to play your fifth midfielder very infrequently so it's a decent shout and a great way to save funds and invest them on your starting lineup.

So Dirty Harry leaving QPR. What do you think that means for Charlie Austin? Obviously he will always be first choice but what kind of impact could it have on the team? I wouldn't have much faith in Les Ferdinand as manager. I believe the favourite for the job is Tim Sherwood but I cannot see him having the same attacking impact as at Spurs as there are just not the players there with the potential are there?

    1. Walsh
      • 12 Years

Sherwood is a pretty attacking manager to be fair. Think the ship has sailed on Austin in my mind given their away form and difficult home fixtures. Do have half a mind to get him in for the DGW though even though they are tough games they are at home at least...

Sherwood is a complete muppet. (No offence muppet 🙂 ) They're gonners for sure. Doesn't mean Austin won't keep scoring goals though.
He may be worth a punt for the DGW, I'm avoiding otherwise..

Not sure Cheese, I still feel the team is built as a counter-attacking outfit with all three of Vargas, Fer, and Isla starting. If those three are on the team sheet, I still expect the attacking runs of old from the team.

Fwiw, on most fan forums it seems no one wants Sherwood running the side. Ideally they'd want either Howe, or McLaren

Assuming a Chelsea DGW in 28 along with Spurs, Costa comes in to my team in GW 26 as captain (he'll be a fantastic differential as so few will do it), out again in GW 27 and back in GW 28. For GW 28 DGW I'll have Terry, Hazard, Costa, Eriksen and Kane all playing twice. And no hits!!!

Took a bit of planning but I set my wildcard up last week specifically to make this work.

Now all I need is for Villa to beat Leicester and I'm sorted. 😉 Otherwise it's plan B.

Not for me. I'm holding my original wildcard till the DGWs resulting from the FA Cup semi-finals are clear. Probably use it around GW 32/33.

              • 12 Years
              10 years, 10 months ago

It's official, Preston, Bradford, Blackburn and Middlesborough for the final 4 😉

I'd happily use it for the last fixture block starting GW 34 in that case. But most likely we'll see a DGW for a couple out of Arsenal, United, Hammers and Liverpool at least.

                  • 12 Years
                  10 years, 10 months ago

I think that's the assumption yeah. The fixtures in GW33 for the teams you highlighted:

                  Arsenal vs Sunderland
                  Chelsea vs United
                  Man City vs West Ham
                  Hull vs Liverpool

If West Ham go through, City get AVL/WHM in 34 or swa/WHM in 37 😯

Interesting. I hadn't looked that far ahead, only in terms of knowing roughly when I'd be using the wildcard. But it seems that Arsenal and Liverpool both reaching the Semi-Finals would deliver something really useful.

The other advantage was that by knowing I'd be taking the original wildcard around GW33 I could discount the GW 34-38 fixtures when setting up the winter wildcard. As a result I have gone with Foster/Myhill knowing that they'll be gone before WBA's awful last 5 fixtures.

I'm thinking of it. Many people trying to balance the amount of Che/Tot players they have for the blank. Gw27 more than likely will be low scoring enough as the big teams have not got amazing fixtures. Is being able to field XI in gw 27a viable reason for not getting Costa for Burnley? I may well do it and play with ten men in gw27.

Am I right in thinking Panti is the better choice for this week?

Struggling with what to do this week.

    Foster
    Baird Terry Fonte (Wasil, PVA)
    Haz Sanchez ADM Boyd (AJ)
    Aguero (c) Kane Giroud

    3.0 ITB.

    a) Only had AJ for one week BUT....AL > Mane
    b) Upgrade Wasil
    c) keep
    d) something else (ADM is seriously annoying but needs to stay for BUR)

United are going to murder the Hammers. BFS is totally clueless, a tad less than Filloshofsee.

ADM and Falcao FTW 😎 and a Burnley massacre to follow a few days later.

    Krul / Panti

For me last week I decided my high TV should afford me the flexibility to lose a player like Sanchez with much less worry than others. We'll see if that was the right choice. Certainly panned out last week.

I was just looking at this with fab/sanchez and kane in my team whose value have soared. Decided to keep them
too much value in Kane, Fab is like bank interest low but consistent. My only doubt was Sanchez as Cazorla/Walcott may be better value.

      • 12 Years
      10 years, 10 months ago

I cut loose Kane after a 0.9m rise, Siggy, Clyne, Fabregas & Aguero after 0.8m rises, Downing after a 0.7m rise and Silva and Chambers after 0.6 rises.

The only two that concern me are my most recent; Kane and Silva, the rest I've been vindicated with.

Yep. Triggerlips is obviously right. You build value early in order to turn that cash into points now. The only variable is for those who, like me, still have the original wildcard. In that case maintaining TV will help you get the best use of it. After that TV is increasingly irrelevant.

            • 12 Years
            10 years, 10 months ago

I've never been playing for value, it's been a by-product of picking the right players for points.

        3. Ruth_NZ
          • 10 Years
          10 years, 10 months ago

In addition, Balders, having neutral TV and SV takes away all constraints about transferring players in and out. Once you have blown the stored value all you have to be concerned about is getting as many points on the board as you can.

Imagine he doesn't play this weekend. The offloading will only pick up pace.

Soon I'd be able to buy him back for less than I sold him for last week (if I wanted to). Costa is nearly at that stage already and he'll probably fall another 0.1 or 0.2 over the next couple of weeks.

With one eye on the Sanchez situation - will he/won't he play this weekend - perhaps it's worth only looking at replacing Baird at this stage of the week?

If no Sanchez; use 1 FT to complete Sanchez > Silva (for City @ home against Hull)- leaving yourself sufficient cash to bring Sanchez back in?

I guess there's always the chance that Kolarov does in fact start so Clichy doesn't feature and I get my first bench defender on and the decision matters less

“Wanyama, Schneiderlin and Alderweireld, are close to being back but not for this Sunday,” said Koeman. “Hopefully, we will have these players available for next week.

cheers. i was contemplating alder , but needed a 110% certain def to play this gwk. im not going that route w alder if theres chance he wont play.

yeah I bought him last week on WC because Koeman was hopeful he'd start QPR, knowing that if he didn't I still had 2 other defenders I could rely on

    Hey All,
Success with the WC played last GW - scored 91pts

I had left the cash in the bank to replace Cazorla with Sanchez, once he's back - but now the thinking is could/should the cash be spent elsewhere?

    Team for the upcoming GW:
    Krul
    Clyne Terry Koscielny
    Hazard(vc) Cazorla Sterling A.Johnson
    Aguero(c) Kane Giroud
    Pantilimon Boyd PvA Baird

    1FT | £3.2m in bank

Save the FT or use to improve the side?
