Leicester City have made further moves to patch up their generous defence by signing Stoke City centre-back Robert Huth on loan for the remainder of the season. The German’s arrival at the King Power Stadium follows the capture of elder statesmen Mark Schwarzer earlier in the window – a direct response to Kasper Schmeichel’s ongoing injury travails since he fractured his metatarsal at the beginning of December.

Discussing the competition for places in Leicester’s rearguard, the 30-year-old hopes his top-flight know-how will boost his chances of nailing down a regular role:

“I’m not expecting to walk into the team, I know I’ve got to prove my worth and hopefully I can do that. I’ve been around for a few years and played in Premier League. Sometimes it needs just a calm head on the pitch to maybe calm the players down and hopefully I can help. It’s not one ingredient that you need [the survive]. I think Leicester have pretty much got it sorted. They just need a bit of luck, clean sheets and a few goals would help obviously to make it a lot easier. We’re only three points off safety at the moment, so one win and we’re back in it.”

The History

Born in East Berlin, Huth plied his trade for two local youth sides (VfB Fortuna Biesdorf and 1. FC Union Berlin) before being offered a contract by Chelsea in 2001. The 6ft 3in centre-half made his debut for the Blues at the age of 17 – as a half-time substitute in the last match of the 2001-02 campaign – but struggled to cement a regular position in the heart of defence. Over a five-year stint at Stamford Bridge, he scored twice in 62 appearances, with the likes of John Terry and William Gallas favoured by Jose Mourinho.

Frustrated with a lack of first-team opportunities in London, Huth made the switch to Middlesbrough in August 2006 in a £6 million deal, having failed a medical earlier in the window. This early hiccup proved to be a sign of things to come, with persistent ankle complaints restricting the German international to a meagre 25 appearances during his first two seasons with the north-east outfit.

Middlesbrough’s relegation to the Championship in 2009 prompted Huth to switch back to the Premier League and after scoring twice in 63 appearances, he moved to Stoke in a four-year deal. A stalwart throughout his first four years for the Potters, Huth only mustered 12 league outings last season by virtue of two consecutive knee operations – nonetheless, his threat in the box saw him score 13 times in 149 league outings, with the highlight being a six-goal tally back in 2010/11.

The Prospects

Huth’s arrival at Leicester could well be set to threaten the starting role of centre-back Marcin Wasilewski – 4.0 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) option. Having played every minute of the last 14 Gameweeks, the budget defender currently boasts a 4.7% FPL ownership and has notched three seven-point hauls in his last five outings, registering two clean sheets and a goal against Manchester United in the process. The Krakow native’s tally of 36 points so far this season places him second among the stable of defenders priced 4.2 or below, only trailing Sunderland’s Patrick van Aanholt (39) courtesy of the Dutchman’s 12-point showing this weekend against Burnley.

Certainly, having started all but one of the opening 23 Gameweeks, club captain Wes Morgan will surely retain his position, so it remains to be seen whether Huth – who is suspended this weekend due to recent social media comments – is seen as an ideal partner for the Foxes skipper. His propensity for picking up niggling injuries and lack of pitch time (four minutes this term) are strong concerns, however, and with Matthew Upson and Liam Moore also in the mix, there’s no shortage of options for Nigel Pearson.

Priced at 4.7 in the FPL, Huth’s arrival at the King Power is compounded further by the demotion of shot stopper Ben Hamer (4.1) to the bench at Old Trafford on Saturday, with Mark Schwarzer’s installation further reducing the pool of viable bargain bucket defensive coverage.

With a mere four shut-outs accrued this season, it’s fair to say that Pearson’s side have failed to impress at the back: the basement-dwellers have conceded 37 times. Given that only Burnley (38) and QPR (42) have conceded more, few will be willing to invest in their prospects of defensive returns. Essentially, Jeffrey Schlupp’s out of position potential on the left of midfield remains the likeliest source of points amongst the Foxes defenders. With three goals to his name so far, the Ghana international has proved decent value at just 4.5 but with trips to Arsenal, Everton and City in addition to a blank Gameweek in the next five, their short-term prospects look bleak.

Things brighten considerably for the season run-in, however, with Pearson’s side facing likely crucial home encounters with West Ham, Swansea, Newcastle and QPR over an obliging end to the campaign. From Gameweek 31, Fantasy managers may well look on the Leicester rearguard more favourably, with the goal threat of Schlupp and perhaps even Huth coming under consideration.

B looks pretty good in isolation but does it unbalance your squad with money on bench rather than in defence?

        B will give me this

        Panti Krul
        JT Jones PVA Haidara Wisdom
        Santi Sanchez Haz Silva Walters
        Kun Kane Giroud

I like it a lot, but then problem with B is that I will only be left with just 0.1 itb, while A will give me more flexibility going forward (currently with 3.2 itb). Jones can be -> Toby later on for some SOT defensive cover, while Walters is golden for GW27 when Haz & Kane blank. You think?

Thinking about it, is Haidara nailed? Newcastle had so many injuries back there and new manager it's hard to know.

I still like b, as Walters not good enough for a regular place though another option is to get one of sterling or Erik and spend a bit more on Berty replacement.

Or you could do Betty > fonte/ clyne this week, Walters > sterling next week? With clyne needs a double rise for Walters based on my memory of prices so bit of a gamble.

Sorry for the ramble, hope it helps 🙂

Haidara has Dummett lurking, but luckily Santon has left. Yep, big gamble I know, but at least I think the rest of my defenders can cover him.

i agree with you. I won't feel comfortable playing Walters week in, week out. I feel like benching him this week you know! But I don;t think I'd sell him before GW27, plum fixture against Hul and can cover Hazard.

Also no BS cheapie 5th mid like Boyd. In GW 27 when you bench 3 CHE TOT QPR, you need a solid 5th mid. That's my plan for my WC team this week.

                GW 25, save FT
GW 26, Use 2 FT to swap out 2 x TOT. CHE has BUR.
GW 27, save FT. Bench CHE
GW 28, Use 2 FT bring in 2 x TOT

So I have Kane, Eriksen, Terry and Hazard. Conaidering Zouma. 5th mid is either Walters or Blind.

Holy crap two digit ranking good one breh. I'd go with the C save option here by miles and miles after checking out your team. B looks good for free next week maybe, but you're fine enough this weekend. Don't do anything rash after such a massive gameweek!

          • 12 Years

Because you have a solid back three for this gameweek and a loss of .1 more on him doesn't seem like a good enough reason to me for a one for one swap. I'd rather have two frees going into next week and use his transfer in tandem with another to have a greater impact on your team and also will give you an idea on which attacking player you would like to upgrade so you will know how much you need to free up in his downgrade.

          1. NABIL - FPL otai
            • 13 Years

Hmmm, very interesting point there. Problem with B is it would leave me with almost nothing itb so I will have problems, like you said, to upgrade my attacking players when needed (Costa, Yaya and Erik come to mind). But then Silva looks very tempting this week and Haidara can cover me for GW27. Too early to tell, though.

Cheers for your thoughts. So in your opinion which 3 to play out of JT PVA Wisdom and Jones?

Baines is a serious waste of funds mate, even he racks in the odd assist, the money isn't worth it. Austin I'd consider fo the DGW, he's been poor as of late and there are better options at the price right now. Ayoze is unneeded unless you're planning on benching him and /or using him for the Gw27 blank as cover.

Carroll has to go ASAP, poor option right now and can't see him scoring any time soon mate.

Yeah, no point in keeping really if you can buy back at 5.5 or 5,6 even if you're keen on him still. Especially if you have Sanchez of your sides and are planning on keeping, taking Bert out and using the FT to solidify your XI for this week is a great option IMO

Speaking of quick, I heard not long ago that Jagielka is quite the quickster. I think it was an announcer for one of their games. Was saying everyone knows at Everton just how fast he is, but it's somewhat unknown to people on the outside. I'm not saying a lot of people, perhaps yourselves, don't already know this, but I found it interesting. Then, about a week or so after I heard that, I saw him chase some forward down...a really quick one. He was like a gazelle running from a lion.

Those who haven't used their regular WC yet, ar you going to use it to load up on DGW teams players just after the blank? Or do you see other better opportunities to use it by the end of the season?

All depends on the likelihood of Chelsea's DGW on Gw28 really, if not, no

Peopke who have it can probably plan correctly to get enough dgw players before gw 28 anyway and can use it to clean up their team afterwards

Not before DGW28 wince I think 2 FTs (and possibly a hit) can get me the right DGW players. All depending on CHE's DGW though.

    4. The Enlightener
      • 12 Years

Nice Grav. I think the DGW scenario is a good idea for the WC. That way, you can load up on the approach, perhaps over a few GWs, and then have complete freedom to shape your team the way you want it afterwards.

      1. The Enlightener
        • 12 Years
        10 years, 10 months ago

This idea I mention would involve using the WC after the DGW so that you can swap out any players you want to. Not sure I made that clear.

I'm thinkin' bout swappin' out Sanchez for Silva. It's tempting, at least. I wouldn't drop him (Silva) for any other middie at this point with the home match against Hull. Would find another way to try to get Sterling in. That being said, Liverpool's fixtures get a bit tough here, so I am not sure about getting Sterling right away. He could easily do well though.

Out of the two, I'd prefer the first. Sturridge and Sterling is just too much Liverpool and Aguero with his fixtures could become essential if he finds some form. You're essentially taking a risk with both Bellerin and Zouma but same good for the second because of Clichy.

That hair is money indeed. Plus, he did play well. I think he was a pretty good signing for Liverpool. Lallana could be coming around too, and while I'm not a huge fan of Markovic, he's pretty decent overall. I think the worst signing for Liverpool this season, besides Balotelli, was Manquillo. Have not been impressed by him in the least bit.

Not a Liverpool fan but I heartily disagree with you assessment on Manq. He's got a lot in his bag and he's extremely young. He's shown a lot of promise I think he will grow into a very good player as well.

From what I've seen, he has been terrible. But, I haven't exactly seen all of his performances, and it's tough when watching TV to truly get a feel for a player's all around performance in terms of movement and such. I'll take your opinion and consider it when I see him next. Maybe I missed some of his sparkier moments. Or all of them. 🙂

I don't see much prospect of CSs for Moreno in the next 8GWs 2-3 at best would be my guess BennyP.

Thinking about transferring out Hazard to Downing the week before the double gw, Downing has CPL home and Hazard blanks , would be benching Hazard the next gw for the double anyway (whu) * all other front 8 would have better fixtures

E - allows you to pre-empt and deal with the upcoming Chelsea blank early. Having said that, you would probably prefer to have Oscar away at Aston Villa than Sterling away in the Merseyside derby...
Maybe leave this week and shift next GW?

Current plan was to go with 3 CHE & Kane and then ditch one (Oscar) in GW27 and bench the other 3.

Oscar's fixtures in the next 3 are superb, and with Fabs looking a doubt and Cuadrado threatening Willian's gametime, I think Oscar will be on all free kicks and corners.

All the more reason to hold Oscar, in that case. I think Oscar's returns may begin to decline once the UCL knockout phase commences... but until then, I think Oscar(31% ownership).

Great overall rank, by the way!

God, I am really considering him too. I mean, if he plays a good amount, it's too good to pass up. He brings offensive threat along with his defensive talents.........ugggghhhhh......it's like taking candy from a baby if Mourinho favors him over Cahill.....which everyone seems to think he should. But, as I have experienced all too often with situations such as these, just when you put him on your FPL team, Cahill will come back in and have a great game and thus reclaim his spot. In the long run, I would say it's worth the punt.

        Koscielny Terry Clyne
        Hazard(vc) Sterling Cazorla A.Johnson
        Aguero(c) Giroud Kane
        Pantilimon Boyd PvA Baird

1FT | £3.2m in bank (cash kept for Cazorla > Sanchez upgrade)

Should spare cash be used elsewhere?

        Sorry. Way off topic.

I was made redundant 2.5 years ago after 17 years with the same company. I had worked my way up from an office job to merchandising, to a sales rep and eventually to sales manager.

Since then I've only worked a six month contract, which was totally rubbish. The rest of the time I have been a stay at home dad of 3, which was brilliant.

I've turned down 3 jobs in that time. One was in Saudi Arabia and I wasn't comfortable with my wife moving there.

The other 2 were here (in Ireland) and I turned them down because I felt I was worth more than the pittance they were offering, because they thought they could get away with it due to the economic downturn.

Today, I accepted a new role. I start on Monday week. I've done 23 interviews in those 2.5 years.

It's a great job, in fact it's a dream job in the Pharma industry and I feel vindicated for having waited so long.

To all of you struggling on the job front, even with great qualifications and no experience, or great experience and no qualifications, hang in there...

To all of you wondering why I posted this... well, I don't do FB, and it's nice just to type it out. 😀
