The Community Round Up

Despite double Gameweek selections dominating the chatter, the Fantasy Football Scout community were looking further ahead in the bid to grasp mini-league glory. Midfield options came under close scrutiny, as did the potential shuffle of Man City’s attacking options given the return of Sergio Aguero. We look back on those notable discussions and revisit the shout-out to some of our most helpful posters, whilst also catching up with the latest from the community’s tournaments.

The Hottest Topics

After a cavalcade of Gameweek 33 hauls from the likes of Steven Gerrard, Juan Mata and Christian Eriksen, the community were pre-occupied by the options available in the midfield leading into this weekend’s deadline. For HVT one or more of Southampton’s Adam Lallana, Eriksen and Arsenal’s fit-again Aaron Ramsey were key to helping secure a strong season run-in. Irish Madrista also focused on Eriksen as a pivotal player for the remaining Gameweeks.

With such an abundance of choice in the middle of the park and the schedule toughening for the popular third slot striker, Romelu Lukaku, we asked whether we could perhaps be witnessing the return of the “Power Five” in midfield. Established last season via the quintet of Gareth Bale, Mata, Theo Walcott, Marouane Fellaini and Michu, we’ve never quite seen the equivalent this time around, with a front three dominating. As the season draws to a close, however, there are some likely candidates pushing for inclusion with Mata, Lallana, Yaya Toure/David Silva, Eriksen and Gerrard all constructing a strong case for inclusion as the season draws to a close. Daniel was among those who welcomed the security this powerhouse of midfield players provides, although Qubit stressed that he just can’t see the pricey front three surrendering its grip on our squads over the final Gameweeks.

City’s Sergio Aguero is one player who could assure that cash remains up top. The Argentine returned to our thinking for the double Gameweek and saw action at Anfield today from the bench, with the potentially profitable midweek Etihad clash with Sunderland to come. Despite his return to fitness, Your Mum’s Athletic urged caution on acquiring the City hitman. He argued that Edin Dzeko could still offer a cheaper and effective alternative to the Argentine and with a potential 4-4-2 on show against the Black Cats, he may just have a point.

Potential investors in Mata were also being encouraged to consider their options. We underlined the fact that the United playmaker’s big points hauls have perhaps been aided by the freedom of central attacking role during the absence of one or both of van Persie and Wayne Rooney. We asked whether you felt that Mata could still be as effective should they both recover from injury, perhaps forcing him back out wide. Baines on Toast was among those concerned that David Moyes may struggle to retain Mata in his preferred role should his principal strikers return to fitness.

Those regularly name checked in our weekly round-up can deservedly consider themselves among some of our most helpful posters and, on that subject, It’s Only A Game thought it was about time those and others got some further recognition. His hot topic asked for the community to nominate their favourite good Samaritans. Among those to come in for praise were our team news guru Demi, Members table maestro Wakey and former Hall of Fame leader Evs.

Hooperman is another poster emerging as a vital contributor – particularly for those looking for the inside track on his beloved Norwich. Upon arrival of Neil Adams in the Canaries hotseat, Hooperman was on hand to offer insight on the anticipated teamsheet changes – nailing his lineup at Fulham. Keep an eye on his stuff next term if Norwich can salvage their Premier League status.

Finally, with just a few Gameweek’s left in the tank, we enquired on your remaining ambitions from the campaign and whether you still have some motivation to push up the ranks. With £400 in mini-league cash and “bragging rights” at stake, Kings of Lyon was certainly keeping his eye on the ball. Meanwhile, Yess the Sess chirped up to state his desire to claim a top 1,000 placing, an achievement he missed last season by the tiniest of margins.

The Community Tournaments

In HeelsOver Head’s Worst to First- 2 Million+ Club, for teams with an overall rank below 2,000,000 in the first five Gameweeks, first placed Teltzham Hotspurs is up to 1,753rd . For the first time this season he has been joined by more than one other manager in the top 10,000. YOLO Toure rocketed up to 7,402nd after Gameweek 33 and Bales of Fury has an overall rank of 8,396.

The joint winner of Gameweek 33’s Scout Pick Challenge, which is loosely based on our own Scout Picks and has been created by @ocprodigy, were Suarezista and Beavis on 77pts.

In TorresMagic‘s leagues, Enzo the Baker topped his Last Man Standing League where eight were knocked out at the Gameweek 33 stage, leaving 17 to fight out the last four rounds. His FPL Open and Elite 16 are now down to the last 16.

DanyRex25 and our Sky expert D1sable emerged victorious in AZ’s FFS Non-Qualifiers Cup semi-finals. They are currently battling it out during Gameweek 34’s final for the chance to lift this coveted cup, for those that failed to qualify for our own recent Paddy Power Cup.

In the Fantasy Football Scout contributors and moderators league Spencer continued to cling on to first place after Gameweek 33, but only just with his limited transfers made giving him the edge.

    Guys,

I'm thinking of Lukaku ---> Aguero this week, what do you reckon:

    Mannone - Adrian
    Azpi - Baines - Stones - Shaw - Vlaar
    Gerrard - Silva - Lallana - Sterling - Puncheon
    Suarez - Dzeko - Lukaku

    Dzeko AND Aguero too risky?

Just how I see the current midfield situation.

The Current Doubts / Risks / Watchlist :
    Yaya - Hazard - Ozil
(All three have great fixtures if they come back sooner than later and with people selling due to their dropping value, they're becoming more differential with every day.)

    The Form players:
    Mata - Silva - Gerrard
(You want one of these 3)

    The Cheaper options:
    Ramsey - Eriksen - Lallana - Nasri
(The players to help with funds that will still get you points)

    The Differentials:
    Kagawa - Sessegnon - Salah/Schurrle - Coutinho
(Looking for something different? These are worth a mention with nice run ins)

    ____________________________
    FORM PLAYERS
    ____________________________

    (1) Steven Gerrard

    Next 4
    - Away to Norwich who are decent defensively at home and will be fighting for their PL lives,
    - At home vs a tight Chelsea side fighting for the title under Mourinho,
    - Away to Crystal Palace who are in good form defensively
    - Newcastle at home. Goals galore.

His last game vs Newcastle looks delicious but those first three don't fill me with confidence. On the other hand, he's NEVER been this determined and I like me a determined Gerrard on pens with Suarez back to his diving ways. If Liverpool do well then he'll probably get the points.

    (2) David Silva

    Next 4 (5, Silva has a DGW)
    - 3 easy home games (wba + avl + whu) and 2 tough enough away games (eve + cpl)

Silva is looking like he wants to finish the season well to make up for missing parts of the season through injury and he's staking a claim for the Spanish World Cup team too. Apparently playing through an injury but didn't stop him from running the show vs Liverpool at times yesterday. Top player and if he's fit, you want him.

    (3) Juan Mata

    Next 4 (5, Mata has a DGW)
    - after Everton away this week, United have 4 games in 3 gameweeks that look absolutely certain of returning points to Moyes' men. Norwich, Sunderland and Hull at home, with a leaky Southampton away.

With Mata it all comes down to how he'll play if RVP / Rooney come back. If he's thrown out wide again it will hamper his returns, but I still think Mata is the one to own for DGW37, he's the only mid from that midfield that could explode and United WILL be scoring goals against those teams, the trick will be to pick the right United forward ton get in for Lukaku imo.

    ____________________________
    CHEAPER PLAYERS
    ____________________________

Nasri = DGW to come, fairly nailed on, attacking team, direct player that loves to shoot, he assisted David Silva's assist yesterday (Glen Johnson own goal) to show that he's dangerous.

Lallana = Blanked against Cardiff, lets just say he better do something against Villa away or he'll have trolled me more than any player in the game this year.. Southampton just don't seem to care any more. Good player on his day, good team on their day, but their fixtures aren't that easy.

Eriksen = Great fixture this week, those that own him, enjoy. Those that don't own him, I'm not sure about the value of bringing him in now as Spurs have West Ham and Stoke away, two away grounds that take mettle to win at, and Spurs are a bit hit an d miss especially away from home. If anyone's going to get something from those matches though it will be Eriksen or Adebayor.

Ramsey = He's back, Arsenal's best mid this year, the saviour in many matches at the start of the year. It's not just this season either too as he looked good at the end of last season as well.
He'll want to make up for lost time and Arsenal's next 4 have 2 potentially difficult away games (Hull + Norwich) on either side of 2 easy home games (NEW + WBA) taht both look profitable for Rambo.

(Just as an afterthought, if Rooney / RVP don't come back soon, Kagawa looks great with only 0.7% ownership and I'd imagine a bit of that is dead teams with him still in them.
He's proven himself massively in the Bundesliga and he has 2 assists in the last 2 games.)

The Sturridge injury makes Sterling a potential punt / cheapo, but Liverpool have tough fixtures and I'd only want to bet on Gerrard / Suarez / Skrtel.. Sterling looked fantastic in the first half yesterday but he disappeared a bit when City took back control, not sure if I see Sterling doing too well in the next 3.

Assuming Yaya/RvP/Rooney out until GW37, I'm looking at a midfield of Gerrard/Silva/Eriksen/Mata, though if Yaya will be back, it will be Gerrard->Mata probably

Awesome post thinking the same with most of it, thanks! An important thing to consider and add to the Gerrard pros list other than him being more determined than ever, is that with the Hendo red card and Lucas coming in for him Stevie will be playing more advanced.

I can see Gerrard being kept in his current Pirlo role as he gives the midfield a lot more sturdiness. I'd say Allen is bound to replace Hendo, with maybe Lucas coming in vs Chelsea but he'd probably play back with Gerrard, don't think Gerrard quite has the legs to run so far forward and make it back again these days.

Just do Yaya to Gerrard, don't take a hit on a defender

        Coleman-MUN,sot,MCI,hul

Don't you think the hit can be recovered? Moreover I need the cash for Lallana>Mata move in gw 36.

Rather keep Coleman this week, Everton look good at home, and bring in a Man U defender for him after this GW. Their fixture are better than Man City for me:

          GW36: NOR
          GW37: SUN + HUL
          GW38: sou

That is right, a Man U defender like Jones would be great for the run in

With City's fixtures I think the hit will be recovered. I thought you could wait for one more week to sell Coleman, Everton has a chance a CS against United (without Rooney and RVP).
Demi vs WBA should be also a good chance of a CS and Mata is a must for the DGW37...

Agreed. I would have preferred if people clung on to them while their points tally remained poor. Now theyre all just ditching and taking my differentials.

I was expecting a rapid decrease in yaya penos to be fair. Jeez even when hes injured people are quick to jump down your throat for not having him 😉

I'm still kicking myself about getting Lallana over Eriksen this week. Had always planned to get Erik + his stats should have made me go with form over fixtures. [Been burnt all season trying to play the fixtures].

    Urgh.

No doubt i'll buy him this week to see him blank...(as he now has the fixture!)

Same here, mate. Only changed my mind to Lallana on Friday night thinking he had the better fixture and I was planning on getting Eriksen GW35 anyway.

      90th bloody minute! 🙁

Pellegrini said about Yaya 'I think it will be difficult for him to finish playing this season'.

He'll only be good for 89 mins in GW38 so.

Yaya could be back sooner but I believe he is out for at least 2 weeks... It is safe to sell him now and maybe get him back later to finish the season on a high note 😉

Any advice for this team guys?

    Speroni/
    Azpil / Distin / Olsson
    Silva / Nasri / Lallana / Hazard
    Suarez / Dzeko / Lukaku

    Boruc / AJ / Chester / Bardsley

    1FT, 2.0 in the bank

Not happy to play Johnson so will need to either sell him or Hazard this week or hope that Hazard plays to get 4 mids I'm happy with.. Also really need a replacement defender for one of Bardsley/Olsson/Chester but that would mean taking a hit for a defender.. Not sure if it's a good iea?

Form vs. Fixtures. That age old debate and one i've been the wrong side of again this season.

I've always backed fixtures (much like Tosey [remember him!] used to, banking on the top FPL players to take advantage of a nice home fixture against say 5 of the worst teams in the league. It's worked for years, rewarding planning etc, but for some reason it just hasnt worked this year.

And i've been trying to think of why...and i think it might be because the gap between the Championship and the Prem has closed dramatically over the last 2 years. Teams now come up with better squads and more money to spend (rich owners etc)...this is turn makes the existing prem teams spend more to compete. It means that a trend of nice fixtures no longer means what it used to.

You're better off picking a player in form and backing him week in/week out. Forget planning. Just buy the bandwagons and sit back and relax.

    How dull.

Time to get rid of Oscar? He may be rested for PL games, if Hazard is going to miss both legs of the CL semi-final.
