A couple of Gameweeks into the new season and Sir Alex Ferguson has been tinkering with his up front options already, handing Fantasy managers plenty to consider. For the weekend visit of Fulham, the United boss retained just one of his four attacking players –Shinji Kagawa – from the side that lost to Everton in Gameweek 1; a sign, perhaps, of what may unfold over the campaign.

There’s little doubt Kagawa has settled quickly into his new surroundings. With his manager admitting the idea of starting both Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie for the Fulham match was “too much of a risk” due to fitness issues, the Japanese star was an automatic selection for the role in “the hole” against Martin Jol’s side.

Prior to the match against the Cottagers, Ferguson lavished praise upon Kagawa, indicating he expects a significant attacking contribution from the Japanese star over the course of the current campaign:

I would also include Shinji Kagawa in the [goalscoring] mix because he is very much an attacking player, nominally from midfield but perfectly capable of taking a front role. One thing for sure is that he will add a scoring dimension if he plays central midfield, as he showed last season for Borussia Dortmund. We have been low on goals from midfield in recent seasons. There was a time when Bryan Robson would give you a dozen through the centre of the park and Paul Scholes in his heyday was good for 10 or so but lately we haven’t seen that kind of tally.I believe that Kagawa will put that right, which with the addition of Van Persie to the team, should ensure that we don’t lose any more titles on goal difference.

With Rooney now ruled out for the next few matches with a thigh injury, Kagawa could be set to forge a partnership with Van Persie up front for United – as a result, we take a look at the club’s first two matches to ascertain just where, if any, the difference lay in the respective performances.

Average Positions

Swansea Average Positions Vs QPR 2012
Swansea Average Positions Vs QPR 2012

Looking at the average position map from the two games, the similarity between Kagawa and Rooney at Everton is striking. In the Goodison encounter (left), Kagawa (26) and Rooney (10) were almost in identical positions when in possession – the latter’s propensity to drop back and influence the game from a deeper position dampened the side’s attacking edge. Nani (17) also played a part here, too; starting on the right wing, the Portuguese star continually came inside when on the ball, affording Kagawa little space to dictate matters in “the hole”.

Compared to the Fulham game (right), the difference is obvious. Antonio Valencia (7) hogged the touchline far more than Nani managed at Everton, while Robin Van Persie (20) took up a more advanced position than Rooney in the lone forward role. These two factors combined allowed Kagawa a far greater in the middle of the park and afforded United a superior attacking edge. Indeed, Kagawa’s average position against Fulham is the same as Rooney’s at Everton; a definite sign that the two are perhaps too similar in style to play together as effectively as Kagawa and Van Persie or Rooney and Van Persie.

Kagawa and Rooney

Despite his side having less of the ball against Fulham in comparison to Everton (60.1% v 70% possession), Kagawa managed to register slightly more touches per minute (1.0 to 1.1) against the Cottagers. He also received exactly the same number of passes per minute (1.4) in both games, though his overall totals are obviously affected by the game time in each match –he played the full 90 minutes against the Toffees but made way for Rooney on 67 minutes on Saturday. Regardless of who he plays alongside up front, the Japanese star is likely to see the same amount of the ball, going by the stats so far.

Kagawa (eve)Kagawa (FUL)Rooney (FUL)Van Persie (FUL)Rooney (eve)
Mins/Touch1.11.03.32.21.3
Mins/Pass Rcvd1.11.44.33.31.9

Rooney’s stats, on the other hand, vastly differ over the two games. Against Everton as the lone frontman, he had a touch every 1.3 minutes and received a pass every 1.9 minutes but, coming on as a direct replacement for Kagawa, he failed to impress in “the hole” alongside Van Persie. The game seemed to pass by the United number 10 – with a touch every 3.3 minutes and a pass received every 4.3 minutes, his arrival failed to have the desired effect.

A look at Van Persie’s stats against Fulham highlights the difference in his interpretation of the lone forward role – he had less of a desire to drop back like Rooney against Everton and was resultantly far less involved in the overall play with a touch every 2.2 minutes and a pass received every 3.3 minutes. With more space afforded to Kagawa as a result of Van Persie and Valencia’s presence, the Japanese playmaker managed four shots in the Fulham match, whereas against Everton he failed to register a single attempt.

Nani and Valencia

The battle for the right wing berth is just as pertinent a point. As the respective average position maps highlight, Valencia clearly offers a better balance on the flank and the stats more than back this up. Against Everton, Nani saw the ball once every 1.4 minutes – while that’s not too dissimilar to Valencia’s 1.1 minutes per touch against Fulham, it’s where the likeness ends. Nani made just 28 touches in the Toffees final third over his 78 minutes at Goodison; half Valencia’s 56 in the win over Fulham.

Indeed, the latter was United’s main out ball in the attacking zone against the Cottagers – he received 40 passes and made 29 successful passes in the final third; Nani’s Goodison stats are 16 and 12 respectively, a significant difference.

Mins/TouchFinal 3rd TchPass Rcvd Final 3rdSucc Pass Final 3rdCrossesChances Created
Nani (eve)1.428161280
Valencia (FUL)1.1564029143

The maps below represent the position of origin of each chance created in each of United’s two games so far. The lack of creativity on the right at Everton (left) differs vastly from the Fulham match (right) with Valencia on the flank, with United failing to provide a single scoring opportunity down the right at Goodison. The latter produced 14 crosses against Fulham compared to Nani’s eight at Everton and Valencia also created three goalscoring opportunities in Saturdays’ win – Nani failed to make a single “key pass” against Moyes’ men.

Swansea Average Positions Vs QPR 2012
Swansea Average Positions Vs QPR 2012

Nani’s lack of defensive awareness is another factor here and one which could play a part in Ferguson’s thinking. The Portuguese star’s tendency to drift centrally when on the ball resulted in 14 of Everton’s 18 crosses coming from the Toffees left flank, with the likes of Leighton Baines and Steven Pienaar benefiting from Nani’s wayward positioning. Fulham, on the other hand, were reduced to just five of their 13 crosses from the same wing with Valencia and Rafael limiting the attacking potential of John Arne Riise and Alex Kacaniklic in comparison. Furthermore, when it comes to goalscoring opportunities, Everton created six from the left on Monday, while Fulham managed just two at the weekend, despite having far more of the ball against United than the Toffees.

The stats certainly suggest that right now, on form at least, Valencia is a far more productive option on the right than Nani and with Kagawa’s partnership alongside Van Persie up front looking strong, Rooney’s injury certainly takes one difficult decision out of Ferguson’s hands.

Torres is gone from my team. He went at the wrong time (last week for RVP), but I'm confident it is the right decision long term.

I'm not getting Hazard until GW4. It will be amusing if he gets injured over the international break. Obviously the actual injury wont be amusing, but you get what I'm saying.

the team I built with my WC was going to be impossible by the end of this GW... Possibly, most of the players I've got, will rise in price, and keep rising for the Intl Break (of course there might be injuries) but since I built a strong solid team, I won't have any problem replacing one of them..

This is true, but it's also about buying and selling at the right time. I've held on to many a player when they've hit bad form/fixtures due to the fear of losing funds when it would have been better to switch to someone else for a few weeks.

Agree that you gotta sell when the time is right also, and that is hard to know, sometimes. I surely held on to David Silva far longer last year than I should have. Works in both directions. You have to recognize good value quickly, and move quickly to milk points out of those players before everybody else has them. And you have to sell and move on when the value they are giving you is no longer giving you an advantage.

I just think that a lot of the complaining going on here seems to be from people who recognize the quality of Hazard and who wanted to get him in, who are now mad because they are no longer "first to the party". Nobody is arguing that he isn't worth the price.

    Foster Beg
    Saylor Rangel Cuellar Hughes Ramis
    Bale Kagawa Pienaar Michu Routledge
    RVP Ade Ba

    0.5 for Hazard or Torres

Gk great rotation bar gw9 off the top of my head.
Def cheap as chips but all defences capable of cleanses, one week I always have 3 at home, the next 2.
Kagawa for sot WIG then remove, Bale to Hazard if he continues to fail.

I'm not sure about this, but this season feels like it might present better value than usual in spending money on defence, as there are so few heavy hitters that seem important, and so many good options in the 6-7 range. In midfield Hazard is the only 9.5+ I feel it is important to have, and Tevez + possibly Torres represent good value alongside a cheap striker (Petric/Graham). The whole RVP/Rooney-situation makes it even more so imo.

    Opinions on this?

Adebayor is better than Defoe, even AVB knows this so I wouldn't worry about the gametime issue. What I'd worry about is the supply - he's got Bale and Lennon acting like inverted wingers and I don't think it suits them at all to be honest. I'd go for Jelavic over Ade myself if you're looking in that price range - the amount of chances Everton are creating is insane

Very good points and I agree, Everton look a dangerous side this year and you have to fancy Jelavic to get 15+ goals if they can keep their current levels up.

Naturally, financial constraints make FPL a challenging affair. My decision is RVP , Kagawa or both. The latter option means no Baines or Bale.

    What's the consensus??

I was persuaded to enter a last minute team this season and the truth is that I've made some inspired choices up front playing Tevez, Torres and Petric along with a sprinkling of the usual dross and firm favourites elsewhere.

As usual I left it late to pick my opening squad and as the last minute red mist descended somehow picked Miyaichi instead of Michu and Noble instead of Nolan - but in my (weak) defence they do sound very similar.

However my biggest mistake was choosing Mata over Hazard. The brilliance of one and the anonymity of the other have cost me half a million!!

Unlike the hordes of wildebeest transferring in Hazard for a non-existent GW I’m trying to resist the urge in vain the hope that the same then transfer him out when they get slapped in the face with a big fat crocodile of a zero or Lampard falls on him in training 😉

Thinking of Torres > RvP, Mata > Michu and Miyaichi > Kacaniklic for a 4 point hit in GW 3. All should rise tonight along with Rangel, Petric and Tevez. Then considering dropping Bale for Hazard or tinkering with my defence for GW3

Is this sensible or can you learned gentlemen please provide alternatives?

    Many thanks

I was with you with Mata (the seasoned prem player) over Hazard (the n00b) and it hurts. I'll wait and see WR. I surely won't get him in now and, if need be, I'll get him later.

I've gone Torres > Ade but need a few risks due to my terrible start. I also don't see RVP as being worth 13m when there's so much other talent around.

I was planning Rooney for GW2 - thank heavens I didn't - and I think that Torres is finally on his way back. Hazard will actually pass to him!

Agree with you re RvPs price but captained him for most of last season and he basically won me my ML so I owe him a chance.

Brought Ade in for a spell last Oct and on his day he's unplayable. He might benefit if Mr Greedy der Vaart moves on and has some tasty matches in next GWs

So we're two gameweeks into a season and it seems a large chunk will have used their wildcard, probably around 1/3rd of active players at least (we all know many of the 2.2 million players will make a team then forget about it/leave it for the season). So by next gameweek they will all have the same team give or take a few players as can be seen from all the RMT's - on behalf of those who haven't wildcarded yet I'd like to thank you all for making the game easier.

In two weeks time RVP will probably break a leg, Harard twist a knee, Torres stop being gifted by Referees etc. Other players will come to the fore as they settle in or gain form, some of those shining now will start to dim. By the time the dust has settled on the start of the season I look forward to not having the same team as everyone else and hopefully the differentials will pay off.

Everyone with a RMT will get similar responses from players with similar teams and it's all based on two weeks worth of football. The game is a lot more fun if you use your own mind and opinions, instinct - whatever but the game is no fun when everyone has the same team. Good luck to everyone, I look forward to using my wildcard sometime in October when the star players are probably a lot different to those showing up now! 😀

I would be more likely to bet on the fact that RVP won't break his leg and Hazard will be fine and Torres will keep doing well.

Your advice basically says avoid form players in case they get injured and pick diddies in the hope they come good and if not then you can wild card to good players that will be way more expensive than you can afford in the future.

Hiya guys, team is linked, got 0.5 in the bank, would it be wise to shift bale after this gameweek for Hazard? would be able to do it with the extra 0.5 providing he wont rise to 10.1!

Those who have Bale are they sticking and keeping the faith? Help kindly appreciated.

I'm tempted to shift Bale for Hazard this week, but seems crazy not to give him a chance against Norwich at home.

i know yeah thats what i was thinking, he's got to strike at some point and i hate being impatient with good players.

would it be wise to just play him vs norwich and then have my 2 free transfers during international break ya reckon? could switch bale to hazard considering he doesn't rise to 10.1.

Hazard won't go above 10 - it's Bale going down to 9.4 you need to be worried about.

Yea mate it is gonna have to happen... though it does depend on Bale's show this week, even though I dont think there will be much of one. I dont see that he will be raising to 10.1 tbh. Depends on whether people have got him in now and not realised that he isn't going to play this week (and could take him out).
Personally unless Bale does something special then I am gonna be changing over to the Hazardous way of life.

Its been an awful one for me mate, I aint on form with the fantasy football at all. My captains have been completely wrong. It has to get better from here on in tbh. I think I have done a few changes to get my team alright for this next week.
I aint happy that I havent had Hazard but then Im thinking about a WC at some point, probably the international break if I am still doing dam right awful. I need some good captain choices to come my way.

yeah i had a nosy at some teams before in that league we co-created, it is an unfortunate start, but it only takes 2 weeks of right choices and your back in it, defo wouldnt take your start as a bad one just yet, your in the top half mill anyway, i did have a good start but gotta maintain it now.
Yeah captains are most important aren't they, its tough, so tough! lol. Yeah im thinking of either using 2 freeebie's or WC during int break, that does depend like yourself though if team doesnt perform as well, need bale to do something damn him!

Haha yea Im not surprised that you had a cheeky look, I was gonna look at yours earlier and completely forgotten. yea it isn't too bad I think I was in this position last year and still got up there. It is a marathon at the end of the day, and I need to make the right captain choices next time. Tevez or RVP is my next big decision...
They are the biggest choice that can depend on your whole FPL career tbh.
Bale needs to start moving his ass in FPL terms or I am ditching him, he is using up 9.5 million which can be used elsewhere for much more points. I'm thinking about getting in HBA at some point too!

haha! im a curious little bugger lol. Exactly, i started off well over 1 & half million, had a errible start, finished somewhere 24,000th, i dont have any season history to prove it though coz ive joined as new member with new e-mail address. Yep, defo a marathon, people are too hasty sometimes with bandwagons, but price rises are only worthy to catch if ya reckon that player is godo long term, personally i think hazard may flop, but ah well.

RVP is genius mate, always a good captain choice, he could play for reading and i'd still captain him lol! So true, either bale does something this week or he's off, dont trust AVB. ben arfa is an excellent shout, got him on my watchlist now.

Yea its gonna have to be a good couple weeks for me just to get back onto it! There is doubt in my mind as well with Hazard as well, he scored with a penalty and got some assists, could it keep going on against better teams? Not too sure at the moment. I hope so if I am gonna jump on the bandwagon!
RVP is a hell of a lot of money but I am gonna take the risk on him, See him being a lone striker with kagawa constantly assisting him with Rooney out of the picture for sure. Its a hard decision, I might captain him. Always captain RVP hey?
I dislike AVB, he is doing crap all at the moment, hope he starts to get the better out of the players he actually has. Wouldnt mind knowing Adebayor is a cheap alternative. HBA... give him one more game then I will think about getting him in, especially if I WC.

Yeah you'll do it though, its all about the captain choice, and having 2 good points scorers that compliment it, if the rest do great then that's the bonus i reckon.

Exactly, someone has said that exact thing on previous page or page in front somewhere, lost it now, but he also said that it was a penalty, soft goals, and assists are, well...assists, BUT what happens when mata starts hogging his action, mata will be ya man then, lol its all laughable tis hazard business atm. If he's continuing to do well past 10 games then yeah, he's good to have, maybe even before that.

Yep, rooney's out the picture, its all on RVP, i love captaining the guy, its like a buzz, coz u know there's like 80% he's gonna score lol! As for torres's start though, i still dont regret not putting him in lol.

Yeah spurs=unpredictable atm, only worthy one is bale, he'll wanna perform against norwich, he notched twice against em last season. i think HBA is awesome, get him if ya feel it's right 🙂

In a sense it is sort of the same as last year, I missed out on having Rooney the first couple of games when he was going completely mental... Was it Rooney? It was someone anyways. I still didn't have them and got there eventually. But Hazard might have to come into the picture if I truely think he is needed, and will get me some points.

Yea and against Southampton away he could get a few, a good brace, probably talking me into it here. Hope you aren't tricking me just because I am against you this season.

Bale best be buzzing against them, if he scored a brace I could see people going Hazard -> Bale in panic... would be hilarious.

Yeah i totally felt that pain, i didnt have rooney either, but was quick to jump on him and got him in my team, it was rooney though your right. I do agree though, hazard is emerging as a must, i think if im gonna get him it will be international break or week after, if he doesn't get injured in the break i'll be getting him, definitely.

Haha! nah, would i do that?.....(rolls eyes)...lol! nah in all seriousness rvp is staying put in my team, i just think he's a must, he was at arsenal, now he's at a better side he's even more essential, im telling ya people dont think he'll score as many, i do, he'll score plenty, and that 13.0 mill price tag wont seem much once he's firing, he'll be 14 before ya know it.

haha! that would be hilarious, could happen against norwich tho, he's fast and norwich are slow at the back, easy could happen, in fact...it will! haha.

                    Haha so true!

Hoping for the best with the RVP, i also think he is gonna bash one in every game at least or an assist at the least! Just have that feeling and hoping then that he will raise in cash for sure. I dont know whether to call him a differential, but he could be as everyone is jumping to Hazard atm, when I see RVP as someone who is just as important to get.

Lets say we predicted it here first... everyone is gonna be getting in Bale for someone and we are also gonna have the benefit of that rise from the start. I need some luck atm either way ha.

Haha! ah well no qualms about that now he's out for a month. Yep, me too, he's always involve, if its not a goal, its an assist, and vice versa, sometimes both! he's good, end of lol. He will rise, he always will. i know yeah, the hazard boat is getting dragged under a bit imo whilst the RVP ship rises above him, time will tell, but i fancy rvp to grab at least two this weekend, he'll outclass southampton so easily.

Oh yes, loud and clear heard it here first, bale to score a brace and everyone jumps on, cant wait to find this one out at weekend lol. you'll get the turns mate, just gotta ride the waves carefully, the points will come 🙂

Right man im off, been yorkshire all weekend on a golf trip in bridlington, literally falling asleep lol, take it easy man and i'll see you back here at least before gameweek starts for an RMT and such, night matey 🙂

Sterling looks a good pick at 4.4 - would prefer him over Kaca.
Pienaar over Fellaini for me. Not sure on Ivanovic - new right back will impact on game time, go for a cheaper option - Saylor, Ridegwell or Hangeland and upgrade Yaya to Nasri or Kagawa or Bale.
