Following on from yesterday’s preview movie, which highlighted the Projections and Rate My Team’s Player List feature at work, we now cast an eye over the Build My Team component.

Once again, I got together with Rate My Team’s creator, Chris Atkinson, to demonstrate and talk you through how this feature works in practice. The movie highlights how you can piece together a pre-season lineup and how, once the season is underway, Rate My Team can help not only with transfer strategies but also with selection dilemmas such as the captaincy and bench order.

In the third part of the Rate My Team movie previews we’ll be talking at length on how the tool works behind the scenes, including a full run through of the steps we take to keep it maintained and providing numbers that can help with your lineups.

Just a note for those looking to add their team id’s in order to retrieve their lineups in Rate My Team – as the movie explains, this feature is not available until squads are locked down for Gameweek 1 and made public. Otherwise, of course, we’d all be able to view each other’s teams right now by just adding ID’s into the tool. Rest assured, once Gameweek 1’s deadlines has passed, you will be able to add and save your team ID to transfer your current lineup into the tool for tinkering.

Fantasy Football Scout Memberships are now available for the pre-season price of Β£12.50.

What is Rate My Team?
Rate My team is a statistical model built specifically to assess every player in the Premier League and return their expected values for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in a given Gameweek. The system is a complex and thorough one which, of course, plots the probabilities of a player’s time on the pitch, their expected number of goals, assists, bonus points, yellow and red cards, clean sheets, own goals, goals conceded and saves. The strength of the opponent they are facing in a given Gameweek is also crucial; so every team has an attacking and defensive rating, every player a probability of playing a given match with injuries, suspensions and international absence factored in.

How Can It Help Me?
If you’re a member you can use the Rate My Team tool in a number of ways. Firstly, you can use it as a projections tool to predict what specific players will score, on average, over the next X number of Gameweeks. As you would have seen in our first movie, you have a players table that can be filtered by position or FPL cost and which can be extended to show any number of Gameweeks. You can also sort on β€œValue” to find those players projected to offer the best points per million return.

However, this is just one part of the functionality. Rate My Team can also analyse your existing FPL lineup, recommend captains, vice captains, your bench and bench order, and allow you to model your future transfers. You’ll see this at play in the movie above.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Question about price drops if someone can clear this up please.

I've read on fiso that if a player is over his starting price decreases go by a NTO (net transfers out) threshold. If not it goes by a percentage threshold listed as 10%? So does this mean if I own players going into the season at under 10% they, in theory, won't be able to drop below their starting price? Where as someone like RVP (36.5% owned current) could, in theory, drop in 13.9 if he blanks and is shipped out by 10% of his total ownership?

Need to work on my team value skills if I want to be competitive and I'd like to understand this. Thanks.

If a player gets 30000 NTI roughly he'll go up in price.
If a player falls in ownership by 10% then he'll fall in price (e.g. RVP would have to lose 3.65% of his 36.5%)

Every player can rise and fall in price. Without reading what FISO says on it I think this 10% is of the individual players owners. To use your example if 3.65% of all managers sell RVP (i.e. 10% of his ownership) he would drop.

So a player with 5% ownership would need 0.5% of total managers in the game to sell him for a price drop.

Newcastle will be without Colocinni for the GW1 City match at the Etihad. He strangled a player in a friendly.

Something to consider when choosing whether to get a City player or not. Newcastle's defence is horrific without the Argentinian.

To be fair, last season wasn't too dominant...the Gunners edged it. However, should Spurs lose Bale (the bookies are now backing this strongly from what I hear) it is a huge huge blow which they would surely take at least a season to recover from. For the neutral (which I am despite the slight Arsenal bias that Granville delights in bringing up), it's bad news to be honest. Bale's performances at the end of last season were a sight to behold at times.

How the thought process works amazes me, if Spurs had been finishing ahead of Arsenal each season I could understand the relief. However Arsenal should be more concerned about regain ground on the others. Hardly a player purchased so far, Arsenals decline is set to continue.

We've made decent offers for great players and unfortunately have been let down.

Don't see the Terry connection, I view adults as people who are responsible for their own actions. JohnTerry is John Terry regardless who he plays for. Suarez who Arsenal are chasing is a similiar. Except Arsenal already know what they would be getting, which is even worse.

Lee Sharpe: “A few of us including
Robbo, are watching the Youth team
and we ask the boss which ones are
staying, going etc. etc. So he points to
them one by one, “he’s staying” he’s

Robbo says, “What about the little

Sir Alex Ferguson – “Well, we’re not
sure. He’s got loads of ability, but he’s
not the quickest, and we’re not sure if

      RMT please
Been tinkering with an RVP-less team. Think it may be the way to go.

      G: Mignolet / Lewis
      D: Coleman / Mertesacker / Collins / Turner (NOR) / Parr
      M: Bale / Hazard (c) / Walcott / Mirallas / Thomas
      F: Sturridge / Lukaku (vc) / Kone

I think Lukaku's a good punt for GW1 - safety of the DGW means he will surely start at least one game, and a fast start may make him the no 1 striker for CHE.

I'm not sure about taking 3 CHE players into the GW3 blank. I'm reluctant to reserve transfers so early in the season - in my experience, it's better to keep the flexibility to react to emerging players early season.

Hey guys, what do you think about this team for GW1? (It is the best I can come up with assuming Bale leaves)

      Mignolet (Given)

      Collins--IVANOVIC--Shaw (M.Turner, Parr)

      Walcott--Snodgrass--Mirallas--HAZARD (Thomas)

I've decided to go with Cech and Boruc at the beginning with a view to having one less dgwer to sell and downgrading Cech to Mig or Mannone.

Any love for this move, haven;t heard it discussed on here?

I was just thinking about this in the bath. However, I'm not gonna want Cech in my team for the whole season, so he will cost me a transfer eventually. Whether or not it's before or after GW3, it doesn't really matter - I see him no differently to a defender.

Then there's the week 2 dilemna. Old Trafford not an easy place to go to for a clean sheet. Or would you play Boruc that week at home to Sunderland?

I would. I think Southampton could be a good source of cheap cleanies this year. I'm definitely not going to want Cech for the whole season and I'll be keen to transfer him after gw1 to free up funds but it seems a good way to get 4 dgwers and surviving gw3.

Mourinho promised Schwarzer some games so he has a chance to get into the Aussie WC team next year.

Considering Premier League teams playing in Europe don't enter the Carling Cup until the 3rd round (end September) and none will enter the FA Cup until January unless Schwarzer plays in Europe he'll only get a maximum of 3 competitive games this side of Xmas.

Dare I suggest that the DGW might be an ideal opportunity for Mourinho to give Schwarzer an early season start?

Not making a bid does not involve any action. Making a bid does so if there has been one and there is no evidence then you can take whatever the tabloids write with a pinch of sale. This isn't difficult to understand.

I feel I need to clarify some information I posted yesterday on Bale. Take it as you will.

A well respected ITK on a Spurs forum simply posted a πŸ™ on the Bale thread. Off the back of this, Towelie has been spamming that Bale is off. At the time I said that this was a possible interpretation but the only fact one could derive from this is that there had been bad news. It would now appear that Bale, who had been happy to stay one more season, has been told by RM that it is "now or never" and he asked asked to leave, refusing to sign a new contract on which the major terms had already been agreed in principle.

There is no evidence that he is going to make trouble but the situation is more precarious than it was before the weekend. In terms of bids, the numbers being bandied around in the press are massively inflated and the fact is RM don't have the cash to make the sort of bid Levy will listen to.

I expect a continued media assault from RM and they will no doubt be pressuring Bale to hand in a transfer request.

Who knows how it will play out but I am still hopeful we could see Gareth lining up against Palace for one last season.

Hard to say, really. He may not be Pellegrini's cup of tea, so to speak.

For all we know Dzeko and Negredo may be the strikers he feels work best together under the systems he likes to play.

Aguero could end up fighting for scraps of gametime too.

At least with RVP you know starts and gametime are assured.

You have to make your own mind up on it.

Dzeko has made a big statement in preseason and he has a fresh slate now to impress the manager.

Aguero is the big name on FPL but, last season he was a massive letdown and that was with Tevez and Balotelli for competition. Pellegrini has bought in new strikers for a reason.

In all honesty, if I was going to gamble on a City forward right now it would be Dzeko. Even if he doesn't start he usually comes on and scores.

There is no way right now that I'm picking Aguero over RVP though. I know RVP will start and is capable of scoring or assisting in any fixture. I'm not so sure Aguero will even start.

You're right. I'm going to avoid. Maybe zab I'd go for. Dzecko is too much of a punt for me. That could turn out to be taking too much notice of friendlies ala boselli.

It's a mine field. We'll know a little more closer to the start of the season, but I'd guess at Aguero getting (marginally) most gametime.

Yep, I'd agree. Doubt he signed him, just to bench him. First choice will probably be him and Aguero. Think Dezko being given game time preseason is either to put him in the shop window to sell him or to give him false hope of playing so he doesn't agitate to leave.

ok spain's had an obvious top 2 for quite a while, but germany and france have been relatively open last few years. germany seems to be heading into a bayern uber-dominated era though, which is sad. i just think the champion's league has distorted national competitions. only logical outcome is a euro league eventually, which again is sad

Post at the top of page 2 has a fair number of replies regarding the difficulty in getting RvP in if he gets off to a blinder and his price goes up to 14.6.

Is that not he same for anyone?

What if I get Aguero and he scores a hattrick in the first gameweek and a brace in the secind and by gameweek 3 he goes up in price to 11.6, meanwhile RvP gets jack and people dump him in drives and he drops 0.6.

No difference other than perhaps a few transfers needed to get RvP in.

That's the evaluation people who go without RvP are making - that he won't set the world on fire for 14 million.

Indeed...One clever poster had a plan of keeping back a whopping three million (by picking Aguero instead) and for as long as it took for RVP to notch his first goal...and then immediately do Aguero>RVP when he did notch and before his price rose....If he get's lucky and RVP blanks for a week or two (unlikely) he could get RVP for a fair chunk less...and if not then he get's him anyway after Aguero's better opening fixture/when RVP scores.....Now that's a plan !!!

The thing is, RVP is so expensive as it is, that it'll mean completely reshaping your team to fit him in. And unless you wildcard, I don't think many people will do that.

And, correct me if I'm wrong, but transfers in on wildcards don't affect price rises. (I've read that before but it could be untrue)

It is NOT the same for ANY player.

        Using YOUR Hypothesis:
GW 3 And YOU/I own RVP, whom at this point gets an injury.

SELL RvP for 13.4 - BUY Aguero for 11.6

As a result, ONE free transfer, AND 1.8 in the bank.

        Reverse YOUR Hypothesis:
What if I get RvP and he scores a hattrick in the first gameweek and a brace in the second and by gameweek 3 he goes up in price to 14.6, meanwhile Aguero gets jack and people dump him in drives and he drops 0.6.

GW 3 And YOU/I own Aguero, whom at this point gets an injury.

SELL Aguero for 10.4 - BUY RvP for 14.6

As a result, I need 4.2 MILLION, and HOW MANY? transfers to buy RvP.

In summary, If we start with RvP, and he then flops, we can down grade to ANY player easily.

If we start with ANY alternative, and he flops, whilst RvP is flying, We are DOOMED.

You cant check it, the only sign you have is the number next to your name, and the votes on all your posts

Towelie's comment is a wind up - reputation is hidden and levels are tweaked manually when certain thresholds are reached. We're likely moving rep level badges off comments soon too.

A little. The scouts ultimately decide who gets promotion. None of it matters really, just ignore it.

Prime example. Demi's actual reputation far exceeds any respect he receives for being level 2.

Decided to venture away from the traditional templates...

      Mignolet (Boruc)
      Terry, Toure, Baines (Collins, Chester)
      Lampard, Gerrard, Michu, Walcott (Koren)
      Lukaku, Benteke, Anelka

      Thinking about swapping out
      A) Baines, Lampard, Koren, Anelka
      B) Clyne, Hazard, Thomas, Lambert

      Feedback most appreciated

Option B does look more template, which is what you are trying to avoid.

I have to say I find it quite refreshing that you are looking at some other names...

The only issue I have is you'll be left with Benteke or Lukaku/Lampard for GW2 and you'll have to play one at least one of them in a poor fixture, and Lukaku/Lampard might not even play so you might be forced into an early hit, especially with that blank for all of those players up next in GW3...

Wouldn't mind them against United tbh.

Lampard — Mourinho said his concern is that Lampard won't play 60 games a season, but he'll play the big games.

Lukaku — looks first choice at the moment. And he scored a hat trick against United on last day.

Benteke — he's staying without a doubt. Penalty taker and the main man at Villa.

              Probably drop Terry.

I just hope that Mourinho plays him against the big teams more often than Clarke did... he can obviously score against anybody like the last game of the season indicated...

If so, then I'll probably retain Lukaku beyond the first GW too...
