Many of the Fantasy Football Scout community were looking at a root and branch overhaul of their teams this week, as the shine from last month’s Wildcards quickly began to wear off and the cruel reality of injuries and shifting fixtures began to kick in. We look back on the discussion that ensued, whilst also pondering the player of the season to this point and the likely top target for the remaining Gameweeks of the campaign. As ever, we also find time to catch up on all the ups and downs in our community tournaments.

The Hottest Topics

Strikers were again under the spotlight this week, with Phaze 1 coming out in full support of Robin van Persie, despite his Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price tag of £13.6m. His post entitled “Is RVP Worth It” acknowledges that the United frontman represents poor value financially but, he said, this is outweighed by his captaincy potential. Has today’s strike in the 2-2 draw with Fulham strengthened his case?

The Fantasy Freak was less optimistic about the prospects of City’s strikers. With their tough schedule, involving an FA Cup clash with Chelsea and a Champions League encounter with Barcelona, he predicted rotation up front from Manuel Pellegrini. Instead he urged people to consider Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge or Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke, among others.

Meanwhile, our midfields were the focus of Innsie’s post looking at some key differentials in the centre of the pitch. Chelsea’s Willian and Cardiff’s on loan United winger Wilfried Zaha were among his top picks discussed.

Another of Innsie’s midfield picks was Norwich’s Robert Snodgrass, who also caught the attention of our resident Sky Game expert d1sable. He argued that his underlying attacking stats demand our attention – although Snodgrass will need to return from the knock that saw him sit out the weekend’s draw with City to help d1sable’s case.

Defenders were far from neglected in this week’s chatter as we asked the community for their thoughts on best back lines over the coming Gameweeks. Yome came forward to stress how he’s avoiding Cardiff defenders, despite the Welsh side’s kind fixture run – a shrewd move given the latest showing at Swansea, He favoured the value of Tottenham’s Michael Dawson and Aston Villa’s Nathan Baker – he was certainly spot on with Dawson following today’s shutout. Elsewhere, Yes the Sess! was among those backing the rock-solid Chelsea defence and Southampton’s re-emerging rearguard.

West Ham’s Winston Reid was the only defender who made d1sable’s list of best Fantasy Football assets from now until the season climax. He predicts a particularly great final four months of the season for West Brom’s Chris Brunt and Manchester United’s Juan Mata.

Meanwhile, Captain Shirokov quizzed the community on their favourite player pick of the season. Santi Cazorla was his choice, having notched him four goals in two matches after transferring him in over Mersut Ozil. S.Kuqi opted for Adam Lallana and Deicide has selected Chelsea’s ever-reliable defender John Terry – ever-reliable until this weekend, of course.

We also took time out to canvas opinion on the approaching Gameweek 28 blank – how will you cope with the missing fixtures from City, United, Sunderland and, err…West Brom?

Finally, Jesus Navas – Our Lord rocked up with some superb analysis of Luis Suarez and his flat-track bully statistics. Essential reading for all those pondering the merits of the Uruguayan flavoured armband ahead of the trip to Fulham.

The Community Tournaments

The Uefa Council’s Champions League and Europe League tournaments got underway in Gameweek 24. Following the first set of fixtures ENR, Super Zlatan, Champ, Athletico Timbo, Torres Magic, The Shadow, Billy Ketsu and Giggs Boson topped the Champions League groups. Those in pole position in the Europa League groups were DonTheSpecial One, BBG, The Tinkerman, NEIL, Archie, Rate My Username, SW6, AK, Louis9618, Snake Juice, Home Run Baker and Beavis.

In HeelsOverHead’s Worst to First – 2 Million + Club, for teams with an overall rank below 2,000,000 in the first five Gameweeks, YOLO Toure was leading the way with an overall rank of 11,824. In addition, there were six teams in the top 100,000 following Gameweek 24.

Torres Magic topped his own Last Man Standing league in Gameweek 24 with a score of 77 but waved goodbye to 24 managers. Qubit (The Irregular) leads the After Xmas League and Unbelievable Bentek-kers heads the seeding for both the FPL Open and Elite 64. Full details of his leagues can be found here.

Going into Gameweek 25, that chap Jonty held on to his lead in the FFS Old Farts Club league, the FFS Moderators and Contributors league and the FPL part of the Iron Man competition, for those taking part in multiple games. Gigging Order and In Like Flynn continue to top the Iron Man’s Sky Sports and Metro leagues respectively.

I’m still hanging to my lead in one of In Tommy We Trust’s AllThingsFPL leagues along with Bootsy, Billy Ketsu, Jambo17, Koneheads and Evs.

I think we have all made disappointing decisions. But what is that one time that made these punts worthwhile? For me this year it was selecting Eriksen After having watched the first game where Sherwood in charge and saw they were playing more attacking style (even though he didn't get many points) and then comparing that to the Spurs fixture list. It gave me a good edge for weeks to come and really helped me rise up the rankings.

Bringing in Aguero after his injury was perfect timing for me.

I think I also got Walcott at just the right time.
Eriksen too was very consistent while I had him, but got rid this week for Mata.

Oscar, Sessegnon, Rooney and Pablo Hernandez I got at precisely the wrong times, and they got very few points for me.

English football fans need to learn the song, "Charlie Adams Sister's Pants".

The story goes, that during the time Adam played for Rangers, a Celtic fan pulled his sister the night before a Hibs v Celtic match. The next morning he awoke in her house and stole a pair of her pants in the morning before heading off to the match.

On the way to the match, on the supporters bus he told his mates and by the time they reached Edinburgh the song "Charlie Adams Sister's Pants" was born. How true the story is, I could not say but the song is funny as hell.

RvP has 3 in 3. Yes, Sturridge has done better, but RvP is consistent and the main man. Suárez will be amongst the points too and there will be a run of Suárez scoring and Sturridge getting fewer points as he will be hungry for goals.

GW 29 blank updates. Games only go ahead if:

Car vs Ful: Cardiff don't beat Wigan (h)
Palace vs Saints: Saints don't beat Sunderland (a)
Pool vs Sunderland: Sunderland don't beat Saints (h) AND Pool don't beat Arsenal (a)
Newc vs Everton: Everton don't beat Swansea (h)
West Ham vs Hull: Hull don't beat Brighton (a)
Chelsea vs Spurs: Chelsea don't beat City (a)
City vs Villa: City don't beat Chelsea (h)
Arsenal vs Swansea: Arsenal don't beat Pool (h) AND Swansea don't beat Everton (a)

    ADVICE

Don't triple up on Pool and especially City (GW blank 28 and 29 looks likely!!)

They'll tell you the better teams lost today. They are very wrong. No points for playing better football, posession or chances created. Never have been, never will be. Having an organised defence helped out by their team-mates tracking back can be just as important as an all star attack.

They'd have given United the PL trophy today if that was the case. In fairness Moyes can only manage United. City, Pool and his old club doing well won't have helped his state of mind. He should be kept at least until next season, let him buy his own players, but if Olympiakos beat them it's hard to see him staying.

Very true, defending well as a unit isn't easy and requires a lot of discipline, organisation, hard work, and practice. Defending is often overlooked and written off.

What a difference a day makes. When I got RVP in last week I thought I was a Genius. RVP actually being a diff in FPL??? Who would have thought that after the last 2 seasons but here it was. The stars lined up and I was able to get him in on a free with basically no damage to my squad. I had the (C) on him all week and didn't even think of taking it off him as I figured it was 30+ coming my way.....

The story however, didn't have a happy ending. I start questioning myself and where my confidence came from?. I think being a Man U fan somehow blinded me to the facts infront of me yet again. Now I'm not raging on RVP as Class players don't turn garbage over night but WTF were they thinking giving Moyes this job? I don't care what anyone says about our MF. This team walked the league last season and were pretty decent defensively(sometimes). He's managed to turn Excellent players into average joes and average players into TOTAL BUMS.

Why are we starting 2DMs vs the worst team in the leage at home? Don't think even Moyes can answer this. WTF is Young doing starting games over Jan? Jan's a kid and doesn't need to be run into the ground but Young is prob the worst starting outfielder from anyone in the top 8. Why buy Mata and force him out wide when we all know he's nowhere near as effective there? I could go on but I'd become too bitter.

Looking at the heatmaps from last season to this one is pretty daming.
    Exhibit A http://i4.minus.com/iSHkaEc9NuRXj.png
    Exhibit B http://i2.minus.com/iBXLA1AtN9BNE.png
As you can see he's taking wing play to a whole new level. Where's was plan B yesterday? There is no plan B. We are dead last in the league on chances created through the middle. This isn't a joke. DEAD LAST and that includes Stoke et al. Moyes took over noah's ark and instead of maintaining the balance and keeping 2 of everything and bring variety to the new world he decided to load it with 100% donkeys and has brought about the end of the world(Man U's world).

I didn't mean for this to be so long. Was only reflecting on how sour I've become on my 13.6 mil striker even after he got me a goal. From 1st+11 to not even a hope for top 4 in Feb is an incredible achievement. I'm pretty sure I'd be doing a better job with this squad and I say that with a straight face. I'm stuck with my decision for a while but its not too late for alot of you. Abort the mission if you can and get away. Far away.

I'm hoping to hear both a fan's opinion (yours) and a professional opinion on the Man U defensive performance today. I have a hard time blaming Moyes, but maybe its his job to make sure they don't switch off like that (I said this at some point earlier tonight, but I've been in and out, so I'm not sure how recent it was)

Smalling's error was minimal, just unfortunate. He ran to cover Bent when he should have stayed on Richardson and the save happened to fall to Bent which Vidic couldn't get to, unfortunate.

But Valencia, if you watch the replays, is just standing idly by on the wing just spectating while the defense is keeping a last-gasp counter at bay in stoppage time when if he simply tried to get between the ball and the goal, it's likely nothing would have come to fruition.

I think the manager's fault comes into it when he is unable to instill any sort of belief or confidence in his players. It doesn't look like their hearts are in it. Only Rooney and Mata were really running hard all game though there were some honorable mentions (tactics aside).

One of the problems we face now is the lack of pace at the CB position given the ability of even the worst sides to counter-attack, otherwise you allow otherwise significantly weaker teams to attack into acres of space without having committing men forward to be out-of-shape at the back.

Both. The team had alot more confidence under fergi and everyone knew their roles and what would happened if they failed at their jobs. Confidence is at an all time low right now and we have no attacking flare anymore. Just putting in aimless crosses all day isn't a plan fergi would have relied on.

What is the deal with Adrian - is he worth getting in to replace Marshall? I am also thinking I could go Cech, but seems a bit extravagant to spend all that on a keeper.

Pondering some transfers and Marshall is one that probably needs doing this week, or else I have to play Mannone...

Other players I want to transfer out are Puncheon and Mutch.

    Thoughts on this weeks transfers.
Think it is best to bring in a player that for certin has a fixture in GW29

That means Stoke Norwich Man u Wba

Already have three utd and will bench them for GW28 safe in the knowledge they have a GW29 fixture

WBA are not an option due to blank 28 which leaves just Norwich and Stoke.
Snodgrass isinjured so it looks like

Charlie Adam is the answer if looking for a midfielder.

For me AJ to Adam is almost a no briner as he rotates well with Puncheon

Sturridge-Taking away Suarez's points and the most annoying goal celebrations I've seen since the '94 Romario baby cradle.

I captained Rooney so it's him. Sturridge is my best recent pick. You don't have him then.

Nope. I had Terry. I sold him because i wanted more balance with my keepers.

Being a realist doesn't make you a bad fan.

Everything has been held constant from last season not to mention the signing of TWO players (one being world class) so it's clear as day that Moyes is the issue. The squad may not be amazing by what we as fans want as we look at our rivals but they're certainly not 7th place material.

I was willing to give Moyes a chance while RVP and Rooney were out as I felt the initial period could have been down to him learning the squad and then the injuries hit hard. But now that they're back, Moyes has given no indications that he will be adjusting and evolving. He has stone age tactics and I don't see him every changing.

A lot of it looks like Moyes to me too, how many more bad results before they have to sack him? Looks like the players aren't on board.
