Many of the Fantasy Football Scout community were looking at a root and branch overhaul of their teams this week, as the shine from last month’s Wildcards quickly began to wear off and the cruel reality of injuries and shifting fixtures began to kick in. We look back on the discussion that ensued, whilst also pondering the player of the season to this point and the likely top target for the remaining Gameweeks of the campaign. As ever, we also find time to catch up on all the ups and downs in our community tournaments.

The Hottest Topics

Strikers were again under the spotlight this week, with Phaze 1 coming out in full support of Robin van Persie, despite his Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price tag of £13.6m. His post entitled “Is RVP Worth It” acknowledges that the United frontman represents poor value financially but, he said, this is outweighed by his captaincy potential. Has today’s strike in the 2-2 draw with Fulham strengthened his case?

The Fantasy Freak was less optimistic about the prospects of City’s strikers. With their tough schedule, involving an FA Cup clash with Chelsea and a Champions League encounter with Barcelona, he predicted rotation up front from Manuel Pellegrini. Instead he urged people to consider Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge or Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke, among others.

Meanwhile, our midfields were the focus of Innsie’s post looking at some key differentials in the centre of the pitch. Chelsea’s Willian and Cardiff’s on loan United winger Wilfried Zaha were among his top picks discussed.

Another of Innsie’s midfield picks was Norwich’s Robert Snodgrass, who also caught the attention of our resident Sky Game expert d1sable. He argued that his underlying attacking stats demand our attention – although Snodgrass will need to return from the knock that saw him sit out the weekend’s draw with City to help d1sable’s case.

Defenders were far from neglected in this week’s chatter as we asked the community for their thoughts on best back lines over the coming Gameweeks. Yome came forward to stress how he’s avoiding Cardiff defenders, despite the Welsh side’s kind fixture run – a shrewd move given the latest showing at Swansea, He favoured the value of Tottenham’s Michael Dawson and Aston Villa’s Nathan Baker – he was certainly spot on with Dawson following today’s shutout. Elsewhere, Yes the Sess! was among those backing the rock-solid Chelsea defence and Southampton’s re-emerging rearguard.

West Ham’s Winston Reid was the only defender who made d1sable’s list of best Fantasy Football assets from now until the season climax. He predicts a particularly great final four months of the season for West Brom’s Chris Brunt and Manchester United’s Juan Mata.

Meanwhile, Captain Shirokov quizzed the community on their favourite player pick of the season. Santi Cazorla was his choice, having notched him four goals in two matches after transferring him in over Mersut Ozil. S.Kuqi opted for Adam Lallana and Deicide has selected Chelsea’s ever-reliable defender John Terry – ever-reliable until this weekend, of course.

We also took time out to canvas opinion on the approaching Gameweek 28 blank – how will you cope with the missing fixtures from City, United, Sunderland and, err…West Brom?

Finally, Jesus Navas – Our Lord rocked up with some superb analysis of Luis Suarez and his flat-track bully statistics. Essential reading for all those pondering the merits of the Uruguayan flavoured armband ahead of the trip to Fulham.

The Community Tournaments

The Uefa Council’s Champions League and Europe League tournaments got underway in Gameweek 24. Following the first set of fixtures ENR, Super Zlatan, Champ, Athletico Timbo, Torres Magic, The Shadow, Billy Ketsu and Giggs Boson topped the Champions League groups. Those in pole position in the Europa League groups were DonTheSpecial One, BBG, The Tinkerman, NEIL, Archie, Rate My Username, SW6, AK, Louis9618, Snake Juice, Home Run Baker and Beavis.

In HeelsOverHead’s Worst to First – 2 Million + Club, for teams with an overall rank below 2,000,000 in the first five Gameweeks, YOLO Toure was leading the way with an overall rank of 11,824. In addition, there were six teams in the top 100,000 following Gameweek 24.

Torres Magic topped his own Last Man Standing league in Gameweek 24 with a score of 77 but waved goodbye to 24 managers. Qubit (The Irregular) leads the After Xmas League and Unbelievable Bentek-kers heads the seeding for both the FPL Open and Elite 64. Full details of his leagues can be found here.

Going into Gameweek 25, that chap Jonty held on to his lead in the FFS Old Farts Club league, the FFS Moderators and Contributors league and the FPL part of the Iron Man competition, for those taking part in multiple games. Gigging Order and In Like Flynn continue to top the Iron Man’s Sky Sports and Metro leagues respectively.

I’m still hanging to my lead in one of In Tommy We Trust’s AllThingsFPL leagues along with Bootsy, Billy Ketsu, Jambo17, Koneheads and Evs.

We won't know more til we know which fixtures are being postponed in GW29, but these could get put into a DGW down the line.

As many as 6 fixtures could miss out that week. Some could be rescheduled for midweek the same GW however, but some cannot be.

I think we have all made disappointing decisions. But what is that one time that made these punts worthwhile? For me this year it was selecting Eriksen After having watched the first game where Sherwood in charge and saw they were playing more attacking style (even though he didn't get many points) and then comparing that to the Spurs fixture list. It gave me a good edge for weeks to come and really helped me rise up the rankings.

Bringing in Aguero after his injury was perfect timing for me.

I think I also got Walcott at just the right time.
Eriksen too was very consistent while I had him, but got rid this week for Mata.

Oscar, Sessegnon, Rooney and Pablo Hernandez I got at precisely the wrong times, and they got very few points for me.

Went Sterling over Nolan in the end. Nolan's 100% goal conversion in last 2 put me off.

Sterling can be very frustrating mind, I've owned him for 6 weeks and this is the first time he's scored more than 5 points.

His finishing is dodgy as is his decision making in the final third, and he rarely gets high BP's.

I'm still a big fan though!

Evans, Januzaj - Skrtel, Mirallas ?

Not sold on Mirallas but Everton's fixtures are very tempting

I didn't want to but I feel I would need a Liverpool defender (not for attacking threats but potential CS given the upcoming fixtures). Toure 4.5 is more affordable though but Skrtel more nailed on medium-term

Yeah, really don't get Skrtel, he won't get 2 goals every game.

See how Liverpool have managed to thrash many teams without keeping clean sheets?
Eg, 5-1 Norwich, Arsenal, 4-1 West Ham, West Brom.

The Liverpool defence is shaky and not currently worth investing in. If you really want one of them, then get Flanagan for budget price.

Good points, thanks! Flanagan won't be nailed on for long though. I might not buy into Liverpool defense after all. What do you think about Everton defense for the next couple of GWs?

Flanagan has been Liverpool's best full back this season, don't assume he'll be dropped too easily.

Enrique back in a week or two will displace Cissokho from the lineup (thankfully)
Glen Johnson is out for an unspecified amount of time, but could apparently be back within another few weeks at the earliest. Johnson has, however, been terrible this season, really poor, for the fans who've watched him week in, week out, its been disappointing, as last season he played very well, and deserved his England spot. On this year's performances he does not.
One issue is that he only has 18 months left on his contract, and the club are unwilling to offer him another on the same wages (close to 100k pw) and he doesn't want to take a wage cut. Due to this the club have no real reason to keep him happy and may well sell in the summer.

Rodgers is a fan of Johnson, but if by the time GJ is fit Flanagan is still in the team and still playing well, then Johnson won't automatically come back in.

Anyway, despite these points, and Flanagan's great price, id still steer clear, as we have been generally terrible at the back this season. Everton defence appear to have the best fixtures, so getting back on one of them is an option, though obviously they're quite expensive these days

    Serious benching dilemma:

    Hazard (WBA) (not fecking likely)
    Mata (ARS)
    Silva (SUN)
    Lallana (HUL)
    Erisken (NEW)

Would have been more straight forward but for last weekends games. Mata's up against Arsenal but they conceded 5 at the weekend. Eriksen unspectacular but up against a second rate newcastle side.

Crap - Lallana is going to rise. I need to ship out AJ for Lallana or Silva, but if I go Lallana then I can afford to wait, but I need all the extra 0.1's I can get for Aguero's return.

    So -
    1. Lallana or Silva (or other)?
    2. Do it now or wait?

English football fans need to learn the song, "Charlie Adams Sister's Pants".

The story goes, that during the time Adam played for Rangers, a Celtic fan pulled his sister the night before a Hibs v Celtic match. The next morning he awoke in her house and stole a pair of her pants in the morning before heading off to the match.

On the way to the match, on the supporters bus he told his mates and by the time they reached Edinburgh the song "Charlie Adams Sister's Pants" was born. How true the story is, I could not say but the song is funny as hell.

He might be cheap, but I don't get why people bang on about him (from a fantasy perspective)

Has only returned 29 points all season - 2 cleanies.

In each of his last 6 appearances he's returned a whopping 1 point.
