We move onto the third team in our assessment of Group F this morning, as Iran are placed under the microscope. Carlos Quieroz’ rank outsiders face fellow underdogs Nigeria in their opener on Monday June 16 at 5pm before squaring up to Argentine five days later at 5pm and finishing their group fixtures with a showdown against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday June 25 at 5pm:

Road to Qualification

In their first group in the AFC section, the Iranians finished top ahead of Qatar, Bahrain and Indonesia, winning three and drawing three of their six fixtures. Stepping up a level, they were then placed in a five-team group along with South Korea, Uzbekistan, Qatar and Lebanon and once again clinched a place at the summit. Queiroz’ side won five and drew one of their eight matches thanks, in main, to a series of solid defensive displays which saw them concede just twice, though it’s fair to say they struggled to break down opponents – aside from a 4-0 win over the Lebanese last November, they scored just four times in their other seven matches as goals become hard to come by.

Most Starts Javad Nekounam (8), Jalal Hosseini, Pejman Montazeri, Andranik Teymourian (7), Khosro Heydari (6), Masoud Shojaei, Mehdi Rahmati, Reza Ghoochannejhad (5)

Most Goals Javad Nekounam (3), Reza Ghoochannejhad, Mohammad Reza Khalatbari (2)

The Key Targets

The former United assistant boss knows his players’ limitations and sets his side up in a disciplined 4-2-3-1 formation, with little onus on attack. The Iranians are happy to get plenty of players behind the ball and utilise a man-marking system which ensures many of the attackers are also asked to track back, with the team’s shape changing to a 4-4-1-1 when not on the ball – certainly, they will be happy to allow their opponents possession and won’t be pressing high up the pitch to reclaim it.

Since clinching qualification, Iran won four consecutive Asian Cup qualifiers against Thailand (twice), Lebanon and Kuwait but have failed to impress in friendlies – a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Guinea was followed by goalless draws against Belarus and Montenegro before a 1-1 stalemate with Angola late last week.

Given that both Argentina and Bosnia racked up the goals in qualifying, Iran’s Fantasy fortunes may well be limited to the game against Nigeria, though in all likelihood, we’ll be steering clear of their main men. In goal, Eintracht Braunschweig’s Daniel Davari could get the nod after an impressive domestic campaign, whilst Quieroz is expected to continue with his preferred central defensive partnership of Jalal Hosseini and Pejman Montazeri – available for 4.9 and 4.7 respectively in FantasyiTeam. It’s likely to be backs-to-the-wall stuff but if you are eyeing up the Iranian defence, Hosseini, with six international goals to his credit, has offered the most threat. In the full-back areas, Vancouver Whitecaps’ Steve Mehrdad Beitashour could be handed the role on the right if Khosro Heydari fails to recover from injury in time, whilst Hashem Beikzadeh is expected to be named on the opposite flank – with no license to break forward and join in attacks, though, their prospects look far from enticing.

In front of the back-four will be playmaker Javad Nekounam and ball-winner Andranik Teymourian. The former was the team’s top scorer during qualifying with three goals but don’t expect either player to forage forward – aged 33 and 31 years old, the duo will look to keep their energy reserves up by remaining stationed in their own half of the pitch and come in at 4.9 and 4.7 respectively in FantasyiTeam. On the flanks, Fulham’s Ashkan Dejagah and Masoud Shojaei both bring European experience. The Cottagers wide man has notched four times in 11 appearances for his country, whilst Shojaei – who has previously plied his trade at Osasuna – produced five goals and 10 assists for Spanish second division outfit Las Palmas in 2013/14, and is cheaper than Dejagah in FantasyiTeam, priced at 4.7 to 5.0.

Up front, Charlton’s Reza Ghoochannejhad looks the likeliest starter in the lone forward role. A peripheral figure for the Championship side last season, Ghoochannejhad – who will take up 6.4 of your FantasyiTeam, budget – has produced the goods on the international stage and has notched nine times in just 13 appearances – he started three of the four above-mentioned Asian Cup qualifiers and notched on each occasion.

The Long Shots

Twenty-year-old Alizera Jahanbakhsh is the favoured option to be handed the role in “the hole” behind a lone striker. He’s notched 11 times in 17 matches for the Iran Under 19 side and, playing his trade for Dutch side NEC, produced five goals and four assists despite many of his appearances coming courtesy of the subs bench. Jahanbakhsh is classified as a forward in FantasyiTeam, however, and comes in at 6.2.

Elsewhere, Karim Ansarifard offers an alternative to Ghoochannejhad for the lone striker role. Starting two of the last three friendlies, he notched the only goal in the 2-1 defeat against Angola – he is available for 4.8 and listed as a midfielder in FantasyiTeam.

Fantasy Football Scout Daily Hot Topic

    Community Article of the month

The response to the launch of our community submissions section has been incredible. During May alone we published 41 articles, showcasing some top writing and researching talent in the community.

We were so impressed that we’ve decided to launch a Community Article of the Month vote, with a prize of a £20 Amazon voucher for the top article each month.

Seeing as this is about your articles we thought it only fair that you the community decide.

As a reminder of any that caught your eye over the month the complete list of the articles published in May can be found here….

    http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/category/community-submissions/

Please remember that this is only for articles published in May. Just say the name of the article and the author in the comment section in this hot topic and we’ll tot up the votes at the end of the week. The winner will be announced in this Sunday’s Community Round Up.

Among the many that have impressed us over the last month have been Bedknobs and Boomstick’s look at the Bonus Point System http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2014/05/29/baseline-bps-a-new-way-of-understanding-fpl-bonus-points/

Another was Sarjeant’s creation of attacking and defensive ratings for World Cup Group A-D teams. http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2014/05/30/world-cup-groups-a-d-team-ratings/

John Terry’s Dog’s entertaining look at Fantasy Limpets – players you can’t shift was also a highlight for us.

Some of the articles that have only a few comments are appreciated it's just they say it all really!

As it just so happens I've been reading through them all in the last twenty-four hours and so far stand out articles woulf be DINO's review of prospects for next season and my favoutite international scouting article is AB's research on Belgium. I've also found the Nigeria article very useful even though it's short.

Liverpool. They will probably end up paying 29m. Mind you, I wouldn't mind him a t the Toon but I don't think Cashley will pay that much money and Bony probably wants CL or EL

Would they though now that they have 3 strikers in Studge, Suarez and Rickie? As well as Borini..

He'd fit in well at Newcastle but I think you're right in that Cashley probably won't live up to his name and splash 19 mill on him.

He's a French winger. He was outstanding against Norway. I'd assume he's nailed, although I tend to avoid the French.

Almost nailed-on. On the right flank, whatever the system be.
If it is 4-3-3, he will play in the attacking three opposite Ribery on the other flank and Giroud/Benzemaa on the middle.
If it is 4-2-3-1, he will either play on the right, or just behind the striker.

From what I saw in the two friendlies, 4-3-3 will be the way to go. Unless Ribery is absent and plans change.

All of the above are true, he should start of the tournament as first choice on the right wing.

However, given the quality attackers available to France, and the fact that he looks first in line to be subbed (Benzema and Ribery other members of the front 3), a mediocre performance or two could easily see him slip out of the starting team, with Griezmann, Remy and Giroud all waiting as alternatives on the bench.

If Ribery is out, that does boost his appeal somewhat though.

          What game is this for?

I'm not even going to think about players until the McD game is opened, got a hunch that the RB points are going to be changed.

The Mirror game. I needed a game that was open now and not too complex for my mates' totally non-serious league. It's almost an exact replica of FPL, which makes it easy.

I'll still play McD and I agree, there's no way the RB rule can stand. Defenders scoring the equivalent of a hat-trick every game plus clean sheets and block points? It's nonsense.

Due to ITV's insistence on keeping Tyldesley and Townsend, the BBC wins every time, even if they only had Gazza and a small child doing their coverage it would still be better than Clive 'that magic night in Barcelona in 1999' Tyldesley and Andy 'taxi driver who is somehow on tele' Townsend.

I know you're a Villain but even so you must be able to watch/listen objectively and realise he's terrible! His 'Tactics Truck' on the ITV Premiership show remains the single most cringeworthy segment of football punditry I've ever seen! 😆

TBH I haven't seen the tactics truck but apart from Villa legend he was immense in big comps for Ireland when we were doing well. I thought he just did commentary on the games in any case? Leave the analysis to Keano and his ilk

He is no great tactician but then again Shearer could learn a thing or two from Ossie Ardiles about tactics and that says it all.

Strachan and Poyet are probably the only two qualified tacticians on either panel.

You need to separate loving him as a player from assessing his presenting/commentating prowess. I love Shearer to bits but he shouldn't be allowed on telly. 😉

That sounds absolutely hilarious (truck being towed away outside Stamford bridge)

As long as everyone agrees on the likes of Shearer and Wright not being allowed to comment on these games then I'd be ok giving up Townsend but unfortunately somewhere high up in these stations these guys seem to have fans.

Ps. I never said Townsend was a mastermind of tactics or anything like it, I just don't find him offensive when listening to his ramblings.

Watching with RTE is pretty cool though, Eamonn Dunphy, Liam Brady, John Giles... and on top of those three there's a comedy thing called Apres Match where they do marvelous eccentric impressions of footballers, managers and the panel between matches.

You have only been at it a day
And many people don't know you so they tend to look for people they know first.
Add to that you have a team who suit the DZ better, so actual japanese scouts will sign up if you post then.
Would also suggest just ask a couple of times a day, pages are really slow and everyone will still see them. Continually asking gives an air of desperation and believe it or not people actually relate it to real life so they aren't going to commit to a team that is desperate when they can see if one they think is better will take them.

You're just missing times when people are looking for teams.
Seen a few ask for places, don't be too selective as to who you want in team. There isn't really any guarantee that people will be good at this game.
Even today I have seen around a dozen new faces looking for teams and that will increase each day as deadline approaches

Still trying to get my head around the iTeam format and the whole planning your transfers in advance so would appreciate if someone would tell me if this is a half decent plan.

    Starting team:
    Akinfeev
    Yepes, Schaar, Garay
    Cuadrado, Shaqiri, De Bruyne, Oscar
    Neymar (c), Sanchez, Vargas

    GW1 (3-4-3):
Sanchez (vs AUS) > Cavani (CSTA RICA) > Benzema (HOND) > Messi (BOS)

    GW2 (3-5-2):
Oscar + Neymar + Vargas > Robben (AUS) + Reus (GHA) + Higuain (IRAN)

Does that sort of seem logical or is something sticking out at all?

Here's what I'm planning at the minute:-

          --------------------------------- Ospina ----------------------------------
          --------------------- Schaer D Alvez Holebas ---------------------
------- Rakitic Cuadrado DeBruyne Paulinho Vidal --------
          -------------------------- Neymar(c) Cavani --------------------------

3.3 left in bank to do:

          Cavani --> Bezema --> Messi --> Lukaku

and 1 more move for whatever else seems sensible

    Gents,

I've had 2 years of experience in my fantasy career. In my debut season I finished at around 30k Overall Rank in FPL. Last season I stepped up with the help of FFS community & finished just 4 points off Top 1000 i.e. 1145 Overall Rank. As you can see I'm not very experienced player but I got tactics & strategies which I've used quite effectively. I always try to give my best & I'm very enthusiastic about this game. It goes without saying I'd be loyal to the team I join & will adapt to that team's philosophy so you can consider me as an asset. I'm currently weighing my options so would like to anybody wants to sign me here?

Going to retread some old ground here but I thought as the game gets nearer, I'd use some data from FIFA's WC 2010 stats to further highlight how absurdly biased the 2014 McDonald's WC points scoring is (Where applicable I've given the maximum points possible (i.e. Minutes, played, Deliveries into Box etc...)):

    Player Analysis:

    Giorgio Chiellini (Italy) (Defender)
    Games played: 3
    Minutes played: 270 (Points: 9)
    Recovered Balls: 47 (Points: 47)
    Avg. RB per game: 15.67
Deliveries into box: 2 (Points: 1)
    Yellow Cards: 1 (Points: -1)
    Fouls: 7 (Points: -2)

Italy did not keep a clean sheet in any of their 3 group games (1-1, 1-1, 3-2) and went out in the First Round. Despite only playing 3 games, Chiellini amassed (by a rough calculation) 54 points.

    David Villa (Spain) (Attacker)
    Games Played: 7
    Minutes Played: 634 (Points: 21)
    RBs: 10 (Points: 10)
    Avg. RB per game: 1.43
    Goals: 5 (Points: 25)
    Assists: 1 (Points: 3)
Deliveries into box: 9 (Points: 4)

(Don't have stats for Villa's fouls)

David Villa was the top scorer in WC 2010, grabbing 5 goals (lost out on GB to Muller on assists). He played almost every minute of the tournament, earning the maximum points. Even still, Villa would have only earned 63 points.

That's only 9 points difference between a defender who played just 3 games and failed to keep a single clean sheet; and a striker who played almost the entire tournament, and joint overall top scorer in a winning team.

Change RBs to 1 point for every 5 RBs and Chiellini would only score 16 whereas Villa would score 55; a far better reflection on how the players performed.

Unless this gets changed, I recommend loading up on defenders instead of wasting money on expensive strikers.

    Data source: http://www.fifa.com/tournaments/archive/worldcup/southafrica2010/statistics/players/index.html

*** Best value XI of the season ***

    Speroni
    Kosc - Fonte - Ward - Delaney - Coleman
    Mutch – Sidwell – Davis – Puncheon
    JRod

1510pts, and an overall rank of around 2.3m

    .
    .
*** Highest scoring XI of the season ***

    Howard
    Coleman – Terry – Baines
    Yaya – Gerrard – Hazard – Lallana
    Suarez – Sturridge - Rooney

2,189pts, and an overall rank of around 70k.

    .
The latter is unaffordable and would still only get 70k overall. This just emphasises the power of transfers and rotation.

That would prop it up to 2400+ which would have had much better than 70k, but yeah you'd need the perfect mixture of value, rotation, captain choices, transfer choices, luck, and foresight....

If you are going to do this exercise you just captain the highest scoring player available. e.g. suarez for all the games he was available and the next highest scoring player (probably yaya?) for the games suarez is not available.

I'd say it would be well inside the top 1k

It probably wouldn't be right to select the highest scoring player in each round so cap highest scorer over season and vc second highest as this looks like a fire and forget solution

Yep, just depends on auto-subs and C/VC set up.

This is the highest scoring team and it is well outside our budgets. It's quite extraordinary that even that is not enough to win it.

I guess auto-subs would boost the score too (although obviously we're in a hypothetical situation where we're already breaking rules so not sure this is relevant 🙂 )

But you can have a team initially valued 100 with subs included that will, with the subs, outscore the actual winner. So it actually is a good point.

Yeah it really does show the value of transfers and captains.

The value team really highlights the unfashionable players that you need to identify and own to do well. Coleman and jrod are the only two we would have identified pre season last year and I doubt we would have done to well with jrod all season.

When you say highest scoring did you leave the captaincy on Suarez?

With Suarez captain every game, the highest scoring team would get around 700th in the world. Still not enough to win it.

It still emphasises the power of rotation (captaincy and bench) and transfers.

Your highest scoring XI is a failure, because it doesn't use the bench. There are 15 players in fantasy football team, and with those you can win without making one single change to your team if you're extremely lucky. With someone else we found here the "best dead team", i.e. best affordable team to start with and leave without touching it once, and it would have won the overall league by some 25 points or so. There's also probably a better one.

This was my point though, to emphasise the importance of squad over a XI.

That using your bench and rotation is so key because even an impossibly expensive team of the highest scorers isn't enough.

Yeah, but you can have a squad worth exactly that £100M starting value, not touch it once during the whole season, just letting the autosubs do their work, and win the game. We counted it and there were several different possible teams to win it. The best had Giroud as the vice captain and Jääskeläinen as the starting GK.

Morata swapped with Vidal is quite possibly my favourite transfer of all time.

I can see it happening if we throw some money in with it.. Vidal is being valued by Juvé at around €40m.. Morata would be worth about €10 to them (give or take). If we threw an offer at Juvé for Morata + 25 mill for Vidal he'd be a brilliant buy.

+ why would they want another striker? They already have a plenty of them.

...I know it's only the Daily Express. And I doubt it will happen, but I want to see the back of Morata and I want Vidal more than any other player in the world (except for maybe Pogba), so I can dream can't I? 😀

Think it's why I want to play this WC game. Easy, not too much to worry about. Can't be arsed fannying about with a squad.
