Election fever gripped the community this week in its search for a Scout Picks champion in what proved to be the closest contest yet. We look back on that campaign, whilst also checking in on the activity surrounding the frantic deadline day dash Ultimate Fantasy Premier League managers faced. Elsewhere, we revisit a love letter for Leighton Baines and consider the balance of perception versus reality. As ever, we throw in all the latest members tables, hottest topics and hear news of a new team-based quiz taking place soon.

The Community Articles

Gameweek 4 proved was pivotal for those playing the Ultimate Fantasy Premier League (UFPL) game as the transfer window closed and managers made their final squad changes before January. Loans are still available up to then, but may not be needed if managers can get their selection right. Luckily QPR Expects Glory was on hand with this excellent guide to picking the right UFPL players for the next few months.

This weekend’s matches were also important for those looking for key differentials. The Puntmaster is proving quite the soothsayer with his regular trio of gambles and this week Southampton’s Graziano Pelle was among those coming into sharp focus in his crystal ball for Gameweek 4. Arvin-ation is another regular “punter” and offered up a trio of midfield options ahead of Gameweek 4.

With 15 % ownership in the Fantasy Premier League game, Leighton Baines is hardly a differential. Christina argued, though, that his ownership ought to be higher. Here’s his passionate defence of the Everton man who repaid the faith with a strong haul in Gameweek 4.

Meanwhile, AZ took a look at the promoted teams’ defences to see if any budget friendly differential defenders had emerged as enticing prospects.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

As British Prime Minister David Cameron and Scotland’s first minister Alex Salmond took part in some frantic last-minute campaigning in the Scottish independence referendum, we had our very own dramatic battle on the hustings. In our tightest contest yet to find a community champion for our Gameweek Scout Picks, Arvin-ation prevailed over rival Doosra by a nail-biting 105-104 votes. This was our biggest poll yet, with the community offering up 20 candidates to choose from. Watch out on Monday when the morning’s daily hot topic will launch the search for a Gameweek 5 community champion.

There was more campaigning against homophobia in football this week by the charity Stonewall. It has been urging footballers to show their support for their campaign by wearing rainbow laces. Thanks to the efforts of Tinkerman, our community also showed their support for the campaign by adopting a range of brightly coloured Gravatar images.

Facer chipped in with another of the week’s popular posts – our resident injury expert correctly assessed that Aaron Ramsey would shake off his injury and start.

Diego Costa was, of course, another player to recover from an injury doubt for Gameweek 4 – with devastating effect Pepin pointed out that, with such a high ownership, his hat-trick this weekend presents the season with its first game-changing moment, particularly for those that captained the Chelsea striker. Why is Pardew for Kinnear took this issue further, showcasing how a raft of highly owned, high scoring players, also including Cesc Fabregas, have the potential to ruin the season.

Impressed by QPR Expects Glory’s guide to the UFPL transfer day, 7 Shades of Smoke consulted his abacus to come up with this detailed look at where the smart money should be invested in the game. This will be worth looking back on in January when the transfer window reopens.

Finally, we asked to what extent perception clouds our sense of reality over a player’s potential. Inspired by a raft of posts critical of Danny Welbeck’s goal-scoring ability, despite statistics showing he is one of the Premier League’s most accurate strikers, we asked which other players cause a blind spot. For Goonerbyron, Yaya Toure remains a no-go zone, while for Athletico Timbo, Mario Balotelli is a player he remains reluctant to recruit; the showing against Villa certainly backed his stance.

The Members Tables

My goals imminent table, which seeks to predict potential goal-scorers based on goal attempts so far, claimed a couple of notable victories this weekend after correctly anticipating strikes from Kevin Mirallas and Pelle. Members are urged to keep a close eye on this table during the week to gain an insight into Gameweek 5’s under-the-radar potential high scorers.

Elsewhere in the members area Saintkeratinsins constructed this interesting look at the most attacking midfielders so far this season based on attempts on goal. Goal threat was also a focus for Burdinho in his look at the key performance indicators for forwards, midfielders and defenders.

Shots in the box remains the key criteria for assessing attacking potential for Banana Shaquiri, meanwhile Sk42ers looked at more negative attributes of strikers by delving into indicators such as bad touches and big chances missed.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

The Fantasy Freak dropped in to bring us news of an intriguing new team-based quiz competition he has planned. More details can be found here. Rooney's goal would have been saved by 18 other premier league GKs.

The way that team is set up seems like Aguero is costing you both Fab and ADM/Mata/Eriksen. I don't know if Aguero will stay fit long enough to even make the points difference close. Aguero boyd vs Fab and ADM doesn't see that close to me

The only way the first one is better is if Aguero is the outstanding captain option in the game which at this point he definitely isn't.

IMO Rooney and Chadlii is the best United and Spurs option.

Fabregas is a loss but then his fixtures aren't great and you could argue that Ivanovic provides plenty of attacking threat so tripling up isn't necessary.

You're right that we mainly have a 'what have you done for me lately' view in this game. I'd argue that Eriksen is the best tot MFer to have based on history and raw numbers and should outscore Chad if they play similar mins over the season.

Another issue I'm having with city is that they could be having another title hangover like what happened the last time they won the league. We don't have a big sample to go off but they haven't looked like the team we all expected.

City have had toughest opening to the campaign so far and that finishes after the Chelsea game. After that City attacking cover will be a must imo. They are a class team and are the main title contender alongside Chelsea. Soon enough Aguero will remind everyone why he is essential when fit.

Costa seems well entrenched. Rooney has a chance, but I do wonder if Falcao will be able to prove to be the main man. Aguero might be a touch too expensive IMO, especially if Costa and Man United forward X are proving viable captaincy picks.

I can't see it myself Ryan, particularly if there's another season of the Aguero hokey-cokey. Siggy and Welbeck / Pelle being such ( potentially for the last two ) good value means a New Power Five could easily emerge:

Siggy, Fabregas, Di Maria, Walcott, Sterling
      Rooney, Costa, Welbz / Pelle

Something like that looks better than 3 big strikers and a weaker midfield to me.

By downgrading Ivan and upgrading Chadlii to say Fabregas I think my lineup would still be better. Aguero will be a must have soon enough.

It's a difficult one, I think. CAR and Chadli ( for example ) or Costa, Rooney, Welbz / Pelle and better mids. I think as long as Aguero only plays 60 minutes a game and doesn't start banging in hattricks then the second one is best. Fingers crossed!

History suggests that Aguero doesn't need 90 minutes a game to be a must have. He has one of the best strike rates in the league when it comes to minutes per goal.

    Krul (Myhill)
    Clyne Chester Moreno (Rose, Wisdom)
    Sterling Ramsey Fabregas Sigurdsson (Cattermole)
    Naismith Rooney Costa

Was thinking if anyone needs to go it's Krul.

Want to wait until next week to make transfers and after some watchlist picks and a helping hand please guys and gals. I know i want to downgrade DDG to a 4.5/5 keeper too so put up your darkhorses.

current team im thinking of lining up for GW5:

    DDG (gilks)

    Dier Duff Clyne (ivanovic, wisdom)

    Sterling Siggy Ramsey Chadli (larsson)

    Naismith Rooney Adebayor

Not the best strikers but the kicker is I have 2FT and 5.3M ITB
Really looking for best PPM out of midfielders/strikers to dump the coin on.

K : Forster, Bego, and Mannone based on fixtures (Mannone based on price and you already have SOTON def)

D : Ivan has been on fire, but i'd consider downgrading if you want more $$$ for strikers

      1. Footylicious
        • 11 Years

Yeah been riding the wave on ivanovic assessing cheaper D.
I actually wanted some AVL defense but their fixtures are crazy at the mo.

So how would you compare forster to speroni?

From a pure keeper perspective, I like Speroni more. But fixtures and form of back line better for Soton at this time. CPalace not nearly as strong in that back as they were last year.

            Thanks heaps for the tips
I might save the DDG drop until next week.
With my current backline who would I drop ivanovic too if you had the freedom to? Chose him for chelsea D but its looking like they are not required this year.

what would you do with this front 8?

    lamela, sterling, siggy, ramsey, fabregas
    costa, rooney, naismith

I will have to bench one of them next week or ship someone out. If I had to bench someone then it will have to be fabregas and if I had to sell someone it will have to be lamela.

However, lamela looked good against sunderland and has WBA at home. But benching fab doesnt sit well either.

    Thoughts?

I have similar issue. Benching Naismith and playing a 3-5-2 with Nais as my first sub. I would not bench Fab against any team.

that's my dilemma!! I cant pick whom to bench.

My reason for benching fab is that mourinho always sets up defensively against big teams. And since its at Etihad he will play for a point and if chelsea score then the bus will be parked.

Only other real concern for me Costa obviously but I'm waiting to see how he goes against a decent defense first. If I save FT could possibly downgrade Sterling and upgrade Welbeck next week if neither deliver and both Costa and Aguero do.

    Heaton Gilks

    Moreno Alderweireld Bertrand Naylor Moore

Di Maria Fabregas Sterling Siggy Boyd

    Aguero Rooney Welbeck

        🙂

FFS wouldn't be the same without Triggerlips' preening, Jinswick endless, absurdly complicated RMTS, Doosra's "numbers", Daniel's unfathomable rants, Christina's moaning, Sporting's knob jokes and the like. It's what gives the place some character ( I think that's what you call it ).

You don't seem to offer much though if I'm honest.

I've not got one but stick them in for the season and you'll do fine.

Cost you money and points. That's never good, you know?

Slightly patronising but whatever. When they start to tighten up they'll be worth the price.

they will get the points overall, but you will get more points if you get the players in form.

Terry is doing poorly right now. Get in someone who is in good form and has the fixtures. When his returns slow down and when chelsea's defence get tight again then bring in terry and reap the rewards.

They're still favourites to get a clean sheet vs anyone. I don't think getting rid of them is a terrible move but it could be costly.

They're not favorites for a clean sheet against anyone. They're dodgy as hell at the back. And I don't see it changing. Not drastically anyway. Playing a completely different way this season.

Terry the only one that matters, and not surprised at all by Costa and Fabregas. If it was last year both would have gone up by at least a million or so by now, thus meaning those that missed the bandwagon having to either rearrange or look elsewhere.

I get the feeling the template will be even more frequent this year as a result of this.

What are the Terry owners planning to do with him?

Have to ditch surely. Chelsea are much more attacking, costing clean sheets. There are plenty of options for the price as well.
