Election fever gripped the community this week in its search for a Scout Picks champion in what proved to be the closest contest yet. We look back on that campaign, whilst also checking in on the activity surrounding the frantic deadline day dash Ultimate Fantasy Premier League managers faced. Elsewhere, we revisit a love letter for Leighton Baines and consider the balance of perception versus reality. As ever, we throw in all the latest members tables, hottest topics and hear news of a new team-based quiz taking place soon.

The Community Articles

Gameweek 4 proved was pivotal for those playing the Ultimate Fantasy Premier League (UFPL) game as the transfer window closed and managers made their final squad changes before January. Loans are still available up to then, but may not be needed if managers can get their selection right. Luckily QPR Expects Glory was on hand with this excellent guide to picking the right UFPL players for the next few months.

This weekend’s matches were also important for those looking for key differentials. The Puntmaster is proving quite the soothsayer with his regular trio of gambles and this week Southampton’s Graziano Pelle was among those coming into sharp focus in his crystal ball for Gameweek 4. Arvin-ation is another regular “punter” and offered up a trio of midfield options ahead of Gameweek 4.

With 15 % ownership in the Fantasy Premier League game, Leighton Baines is hardly a differential. Christina argued, though, that his ownership ought to be higher. Here’s his passionate defence of the Everton man who repaid the faith with a strong haul in Gameweek 4.

Meanwhile, AZ took a look at the promoted teams’ defences to see if any budget friendly differential defenders had emerged as enticing prospects.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

As British Prime Minister David Cameron and Scotland’s first minister Alex Salmond took part in some frantic last-minute campaigning in the Scottish independence referendum, we had our very own dramatic battle on the hustings. In our tightest contest yet to find a community champion for our Gameweek Scout Picks, Arvin-ation prevailed over rival Doosra by a nail-biting 105-104 votes. This was our biggest poll yet, with the community offering up 20 candidates to choose from. Watch out on Monday when the morning’s daily hot topic will launch the search for a Gameweek 5 community champion.

There was more campaigning against homophobia in football this week by the charity Stonewall. It has been urging footballers to show their support for their campaign by wearing rainbow laces. Thanks to the efforts of Tinkerman, our community also showed their support for the campaign by adopting a range of brightly coloured Gravatar images.

Facer chipped in with another of the week’s popular posts – our resident injury expert correctly assessed that Aaron Ramsey would shake off his injury and start.

Diego Costa was, of course, another player to recover from an injury doubt for Gameweek 4 – with devastating effect Pepin pointed out that, with such a high ownership, his hat-trick this weekend presents the season with its first game-changing moment, particularly for those that captained the Chelsea striker. Why is Pardew for Kinnear took this issue further, showcasing how a raft of highly owned, high scoring players, also including Cesc Fabregas, have the potential to ruin the season.

Impressed by QPR Expects Glory’s guide to the UFPL transfer day, 7 Shades of Smoke consulted his abacus to come up with this detailed look at where the smart money should be invested in the game. This will be worth looking back on in January when the transfer window reopens.

Finally, we asked to what extent perception clouds our sense of reality over a player’s potential. Inspired by a raft of posts critical of Danny Welbeck’s goal-scoring ability, despite statistics showing he is one of the Premier League’s most accurate strikers, we asked which other players cause a blind spot. For Goonerbyron, Yaya Toure remains a no-go zone, while for Athletico Timbo, Mario Balotelli is a player he remains reluctant to recruit; the showing against Villa certainly backed his stance.

The Members Tables

My goals imminent table, which seeks to predict potential goal-scorers based on goal attempts so far, claimed a couple of notable victories this weekend after correctly anticipating strikes from Kevin Mirallas and Pelle. Members are urged to keep a close eye on this table during the week to gain an insight into Gameweek 5’s under-the-radar potential high scorers.

Elsewhere in the members area Saintkeratinsins constructed this interesting look at the most attacking midfielders so far this season based on attempts on goal. Goal threat was also a focus for Burdinho in his look at the key performance indicators for forwards, midfielders and defenders.

Shots in the box remains the key criteria for assessing attacking potential for Banana Shaquiri, meanwhile Sk42ers looked at more negative attributes of strikers by delving into indicators such as bad touches and big chances missed.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

The Fantasy Freak dropped in to bring us news of an intriguing new team-based quiz competition he has planned. More details can be found here. Meanwhile, to take part in discussion on another team-based competition, the FFS UEFA group’s Hockey World Cup, please visit their dedicated competition article here.

    Catalogue of errors this week:

Mata to Steling (seemed logical and is what I want for the long term)

Filing to captain either Rooney or Costa in aid of a maverick 2 pointer from sterling.

    Only way is up now!

        The captaincy is hurting.

falcao is tough as per we dont know for how long he will have gametime limited due to his slow comebak pos-njury. too much cash 11.0 to have playing 25 min.
risk is he might rise to 11.3 by the time he starts 90 min.

How did falcao look when he came on?

it was pretty much an exhibition by then, hard to say. he had a decent chance but the keeper was on him fast and it was saved. today's performance should've increased interest in him by a mile though.

likelihood is there'll be at least one benched out of rooney, rvp, falcao and mata every week and we won't know who unless someone hits a real hot/crap streak, that's just gonna be the risk we have to deal with.

Roo is captain though, should start every week... Might be dropping deeper with falcao and rvp on..

he dropped deeper today. i don't think that'll affect his points a huge amount though tbh, he was virtually alongside the two strikers half the time, and more central. i doubt LVG takes captaincy so seriously that it makes him undroppable, but yeah, he's not as much of a rotation worry right now as the other three.

    Begovic, Hamer
    terry, bertrand, coloccini, duff, moore
    lamela, siggy, ramsey, sterling, fabregas
    costa, rooney, naismith

    0 ITB, 1 FT

Selecting one to bench from the front 8 is a dilemma for next week. Fixture wise fabregas has the toughest, form wise lamela is the worst having not returned in the last 2 weeks. But lamela has the easiest fixture (WBA).

I am planning on selling lamela after next week when his fixtures get tough. Would you rather sell him this week and upgrade elsewhere? (terry >> baines)

Or bench fab/naismith and save the transfer?

    Cheers,

I am. Aguero is an injury magnet. Purposely staying away from him for that reason.

costa is also an injury magnet though, and aguero has just as much potential to explode and better fixtures. essential while fit imo, the injury when it comes is a small price to pay.

I'm thinking of playing 3-5-2 next week with Chadli and benching Welbz. Roll over the transfers for 2 weeks and see how it's going in gw7. Easy to bring in Baines or Mirallas after that. West Brom are terrible and Villa defensively impressive so far...

Mata to Di Maria for a hit? Worth it?
I already did one FT for Jones to Duff
    Team is looking like this
    Krul/Foster
    Debuchy Duff Clyne Cahill Moore
    Ramsey Sterling Siggy Mata Marney
    Costa Rooney Naismith

I need to get rid of Debuchy, but I know Di maria will probably rise again this week and Mata could be easily dropped for Rooney next week to accommodate Falcao,RVP,Rooney in the starting XL.

Debuchy would be my priority. Looked a nasty injury and getting rid of a injured player should be first imo

But everyone says It's not worth taking a hit for a defender specially that I will still have 3 playing defenders in Clyne Duff and Cahill, maybe it's just Di Maria's performance today that is making me blind. lol

Understand but i always believe in shifting those long term injured players (guessing). You will find another use for your FT next week, something else may happen the week after and before you know it Debuchy has been with you for 4 weeks with a red flag.
Understand the Di Mari desire but they wont play QPR every week.

Many of the WC had a Chelsea and Liverpool defender who didn't deliver this week. I wouldn't be worried as long as your front 8 are nailed on and performing.

    Good morning DZ!

Happy to have saved FT, instead of shipping Mata for Sterling 🙂
But now I feel Mata's time is done. I was hoping Falcao would replace Rvp but came on for Mata instead 🙁

    Current front 8:
    Fabregas Ramsey Mata Lamela Sigurdsson
    Rooney Costa Naismith

    What's the obvious transfer? Mata>Sterling?
Willing to give Lamela another week since he hit the post 😛

    Thanks.

Thats what I am thinking as well. Mourinho will play for a point at Etihad and if they do score then the bus will be parked before they pick the ball out of the net.

Lol, I'm glad I got some company as well. I think Fernandinho will see to it that Fab doesn't see much of the ball. He's the only one that's creating chances really.

funny how one player makes a huge difference. you scored 76 while I got 59 with sterling captain. good move keeping mata instead of getting sterling.

I would actually keep Mata, he played really well and could have scored two goals. He looked more dangerous and they played way better when he was on the pitch, the only reason he took him out was because he wanted to experiment with Falcao - RVP up front but honestly I can't see that working

Whats wrong with this team. I feel like Im incredibly unlucky to be outside 1m atm. Krul-elliot; Clyne-PVA-Terry-Wisdom-Vlaar; Ramsey-Hazard-Sterling-Siggy-Albrighton; Rooney-Kun-Naismith

I bet you got unlucky with Hazard, Terry and Sterling this week. Which is fine because it won’t be like that every week. Aguero will get you points when he plays so will Rooney. Naismith and Albrighton need to go and maybe Krul. Get Costa!

I did Terry to Baines for free this week. Will wait a week to do Rooney to Costa. Hazard has been disgusting me especially this week as my captain. Maybe downgrading him can eventually be my source of upgrading Steven to Welz or Pelle

I want to thank everyone on this site for talking me out of Coloccini. I should had taken it a step further and ditched Krul as well. As it stands I have the popular Krul/Elliot combo which means I don’t have enough money to upgrade to one of the 5m keepers. At 4.5m price point I don’t see a lot of gems. Mannone doesn’t have a CS yet. Foster is out of form and the likes of Heaton and Schmeichel scare me. What should I do about Krul? Should I just keep a keeper who plays for the slowest back line in the league?

    Begovic

    Terry - Moreno - N.Taylor - Chester - Dummett

    Hazard - Ramsey - Sterling - Sigurdsson - Henderson

    Costa - Dzeko - Naismith

2.4M in the bank. Getting rid of Dzeko for Pellè or Welbeck and then what else? Just that?

haz, ramsey, siggy, sterling, di maria
              welbeck, costa, naismith.

who will you bench? there will be points on the bench almost every week.

I did lamela to chadli for the cash and the fact chadli has been playing way higher than lamela and eriksen and almost having a free run. Id keep Silva one more week though because I would not judge ADM on one good game against QPR he needs to back performances up

Anybody else looking at strikers and tempted to go big across all three? I am looking at Aguero in for Fletcher (yep I have got him) and having Rooney - Costa - Aguero. Will mean a 4.5 mid and a defence packed to the rafters with sub 4.5 players...but just look at those big lads up top. What do you reckon?

    1. kiwi_pool

Cheap defence seems to be the way to go right now. Will it mean playing a 4.5 mid each week in a 3-4-3?

Hi mate, nope my mid is cesc, ramsey, sigurdson and sterling with a 4.5 on the bench. Defence is abysmal but who cares!

Thinking about it if Costa does the biz against City. Actually just means going with two heavy hitting mids or uber defense. Both seem decent avenues considering Siggy is a heavy hitter at a bargain price.

    Got 1FT this week.

    Krul
    Clyne Moreno PVA
    Ramsey Fab Siggy Sterling
    Costa Naismith Rooney

    Foster Hendo Cahill Wisdom

Reckon I want Welbeck by GW8 which I'll sell Hendo to get, thinking of downgrading Cahill to raise some funds. So do I...

    A) Save it
    B) Hendo to 4.5
    C) Cahill downgrade
    D) Hendo/Cahill downgrade and Naismith to Welbeck for -4
    E) Something else?
