For a moment, we were beginning to believe it would never happen.

But Jonathan Moss had other ideas, perhaps, like me, he had been silly enough to overlook Diego Costa in his Fantasy Premier League squad.

We can’t claim that the Chelsea striker’s fifth yellow card and resultant one-match ban sent shockwaves through the Fantasy Football community – we were already in the brace position.

However, having navigated 11 domestic matches without an indiscretion, it looked as though Costa v2 was capable of making the Gameweek 19 curfew.

Now we have to consider our options.

The impact of the suspension is perhaps amplified by the fixture involved; the Boxing Day meeting with AFC Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge was potentially a platform for Costa to produce a big haul.

Then again, there was always the possibility that Antonio Conte would preserve the striker, if not in Gameweek 18, more likely for the visit of Stoke City that followed.

The Blues travel to Spurs in Gameweek 20 and, perched on the suspension tightrope; it would have been prudent for Conte to keep Costa out of the Potters clash and protected.

That’s perhaps a philosophical perspective on the current scenario – speculation to soften the blow.

Typically, Zlatan Ibrahimovic has a say in all this – he is now at the forefront of the Costa fall-out.

The Swede’s brace of goals at The Hawthorns has elevated his status and taken him to an impressive 54 points over his last six Gameweeks.

Even Costa, with his unerring consistency, pales in comparison, returning 42 over his last six starts.

The United striker had already built a case prior to his latest goals; he soared to the top of the “transfers in” column within an hour of Costa’s booking.

Clearly, with United facing Sunderland, Middlesbrough and West Ham before the FA Cup break and Jose Mourinho playing down fears the striker will be rested, Ibrahimovic appears poised to maintain his current output.

But for those who adopted Costa early, maximising his price increase, the decision is far from straightforward.

To move to Ibrahimovic now could force them to stick by the United striker beyond Costa’s return in Gameweek 19, should funds limit their option.

Arguably, Ibrahimovic deserves our faith, even if it does mean shedding Costa.

But benching the Chelsea man also has to be an option.

For many, that tactic will depend on the strength of their existing reserves or if they are willing to part with four points to strengthen in order to absorb Costa’s loss.

Certainly, with Ibrahimovic in the mood, the Old Trafford meeting with Sunderland looks a daunting prospect for his non-owners.

Similarly, should Harry Kane and Romelu Lukaku deliver double-figures in their Gameweek 17 matches, they will doubtless attract some Costa traffic.

Kane visits Southampton while Costa sits in the stands, perhaps an unlikely venue for the Spurs striker to return heavily.

But Lukaku makes a trip to Leicester City who will be without both Christian Fuchs and Robert Huth in their already suspect defence. Surprisingly, the Everton striker is already fourth for transfers in before kicking a ball in Gameweek 17.

Costa has shed 50,000 owners at the time of writing. Clearly, an exodus of sorts is under way, presumably made up of those who can either avoid a big loss of funds or who are willing to suck it up, driven by the appeal of the Ibrahimovic form.

It will be interesting to see just how much of his 52% ownership will be lost and just how quickly Ibrahimovic can climb in the nine days until the next deadline.

But there is perhaps an added twist.

When you consider that Sergio Aguero’s return coincides with Costa’s in Gameweek 19, the option of climbing the Ibrahimovic rises as a means of earning precious extra funds offers an intriguing possibility.

Costa to Ibrahimovic and then to Aguero is just one potential route on the crossroads created by today’s events.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Hasn't convinced you?! You must be going mad. 7 goals in his last 6 league games, plus an assist, plus he's on pens and hasn't had any recently, plus he's been banging them in at Europa games. Hasn't convinced you.

See above. If Aguero had those numbers everyone would be losing their mind going on about how he's the best player in the premier league, essential in fpl, captain every week, and fixture proof.

His recent hauls suggest that stats and points go hand in hand. They show he wasn't playing uselessly. His recent form is just regression to the mean.

It's a game of luck. Past points don't mean anything when you're looking to bring him in now. He has played very good all season, that's what matters. And I didn't sugar coat anything, those are facts. there's no selective misrepresentation there.

How is 'last 6' a misrepresentation of form... Shall we go whole season? 11 in 16, still very good. That's the same ratio as Aguero's premier league record at 2m cheaper. Why are you being so contemptuous?

6 goals in 12 matches is pretty mince for an 11.5M striker IMO but you have him so great.

I would say that 11 goals and 2 assist in 16 is decent. And again, I also try to predict future points, not only look at the past.
GREAT fixtures coming up and he is in better form than any other striker. The team are slowly starting to show signs of form and consistency.
Definitely not saying he is God's gift to man, but even you have to admit that has the signs of a good pick..

But to use your own logic, Chelsea also only put 1 past WBA and Zlatan just scored twice against them.

Haha okay then I can't really discuss the matter with you 😉

Not saying that you should sell Kane before he plays. Started to take part in the discussion, when Worzel said he was a poor pick. And of course he is.

A forward in amazing form with these 4 upcoming fixtures:

                        18 Sunderland (H)
                        19 Middlesbrough (H)
                        20 West Ham (A)
                        21 Liverpool (H)

Didn't say he was a poor pick. I put it into perspective and Ibra creamers came out the woodwork confirming the messiah has returned. I am also in the same boat as COK3Y5MURF

Not telling anybody to sell Kane for him, just arguing that logically he is a great pick for the upcoming fixtures.

Ibra had the best stats + no end product not too long ago. How do you know that won't happen again? What I'm saying is that beyond stats and numbers, there's an eye test that influences people's decisions, and I'm not saying he's not a good pick, but I'm just not going to sell Kane before he plays tomorrow.

I agree with the patience, but that's a different conversation.

If you have to make predictions about whose going to score, you chose the person with better stats; thats the whole point of stats (assuming the stats are valid and not stupid Coutinho-esc 30 yard shots). Surely Ibra is one of the most eye-catching players the world has ever seen, so that test shouldn't be much of an issue. He can grab a goal out of nothing, win almost any header, smash it harder than almost anyone, hold up the ball, do acrobatics that most players couldn't dream of, etc. And if he's constantly getting chances, as the stats suggested during that period, then the eye test should be in favour.

                    1. Worzel Gummidge
                      9 years, 7 months ago

So what happened when you picked Ibra for 8 weeks with good stats and he wasn't delivering and others with worse stats were firing FPL points our way week after week??

You're still at it... what are you actually trying to prove? The fact that you have to cherry pick a period and still lie about it speaks volumes to your horrible argument. It was only 5 games that he blanked for, so give up on this 8 week nonsense. He is in great form, with great stats, and is a proven great player.

And for your information, I didn't have him for those 5 games because money was tight. As I said before, this game is luck; just because he was clearly unlucky to not score though that period doesn't tarnish his future potential.

My double up on Alonso and Azpi is working wonders to the point that I've considered shipping out Hazard and investing in Cahill. Suicide in the LMS league I know. As someone who has never owned Costa this is easier for me to consider than most, has anyone actually done it?

Gives a team something like this....

    Heaton

    Sanchez, Eriksen, Siggy, Lallana

I'm really liking most of it honestly. Kane (sot) and Defoe's (mun) games are a bit iffy, but a penalty sorts both out. And the third defender is a bit of a coin toss with Amat (WHU) likely to get put up ahead of Pieters (liv) and Francis (che).

There's the problem. We make plans for as long as possible, I usually look around 6 weeks at least unless I really want them for a really good run of 3 or 4, but things change so much so fast that those plans often go out the window.

Ouch, although Holebas isn't the worst to play. Probably won't get a CS, but could get something in the other end. That is why you have him over a 4.5m def.

Nope, I like mine bar a few.

      Heaton (MID)
Jones (SUN), Holebas (CRY), Cedric (TOT)
Sanchez (WBA), Hazard (BOU), Siggy (WHA), Allen (liv)
Ibra (SUN), Kane (sou), Carroll (swa)

      Pickford, Snodgrass, McAuley, Nyom
2 FTs and 1.4m ITB so probably going to do Nyom -> Friend

The way I saw it, even if Kane scores 2 tomorrow, I'd still rather have Costa (3 blanks in 17) and Ibra (7 goals 7 games + crispy fixtures) over him. I'll only regret it if he scores 3 goals +

Really can't see him being rested, but of course nothing is certain. Instrumental to Mourinho's tactics - not only goals, but also an understanding of what Mourinho wants on the pitch and they need the wins now. Plus Ibra is a beast..

    Transfers done for a hit.

    DDG (Jaku)
Alonso - Jones - Friend (Pieters, Amat)
KDB - Payet - Eriksen - Siggy (Capoue)
    Ibra - Kane - Carroll

This G2G or should I activate WC?

Benefit of WC this GW: Sanchez in, 2xCHE def, cancels out the hit, better for TV I guess.

Benefit of WC next GW: Costa back so I wouldn't have to waste a FT to get him back, Carroll+Payet have swa this GW, defence is solid for this GW.

Guys, like most, want to bring ibra in. I'm gonna be losing Costa for him as i've only gained 0.1 on him since bringing him in.
However in order to do it i also need to lose a mid if i want to keep Kane.
Or should i just do kane > ibra straight swap and take the losses on Costa's value?
If not, who would you keep out of Kane and Eriksen to retain Spurs cover? as Eriksen would be the one to make way.

I was in a very similar position. Would have had to taken -4 and downgrade somewhere to do Costa to Ibra. Decided on Kane to Ibra straight for free. On the current form no question I want to keep Costa anyway long term so easy decision in the end for me.

Cool cheers Andy, it's a bit of a dilemma isn't it, as i also want to keep Costa, but tempting to ditch considering i've made practically no value on him anyway.
Can understand your decision to keep him if you got him much earlier than me. otherwise i can just buy back at a lower price, or on my wildcard if i use it from the get go.
Don't know why i havea soft spot for Kane lol, want to keep some spurs cover

Fair enough. I think I had gained 0.4 on Costa. Not much either but if you've only made 0.1 then I can see your view.

This depends on whether you think Kane will score 6 or more against S'ton, as you will be using an extra transfer on option B. So judge it off that. I'm predicting he does not score 6 or over against S'ton so I did Kane -> Ibra

I bought Costa for 10.8 so here's the plan for next 4 GWs. The down side is that I need to take an 8 point hit this week due to price rises/falls and I have Costa, Fuchs and Gündogan unavailable.

    GW 18
    Costa >Ibra
Gündogan > de Roon - 4.3 and he plays
Fuchs > Bellerin - need decent defender to join Alonso and will rotate McAuley, Smith, Amat
    Firminio > Lallana - enabler

    GW19
Iheanco> Carroll - Agüero is back

    GW20
Kane > Agüero - say no more

    GW21
    Ibra LIV (H), STK (A) > Costa LEI (A), HUL (H)
Not thinking of bringing Costa back until GW21 as in GW19 & 20 Ibra has SUN (H), MID (H), Kane SOU (A), WAT (A) and Costa STK (H), TOT (A)

For one more game. If he blanks then I would look toward replacing him with Walcott/Lallana/Boufal

Got Costa at 9.7, so he's staying. Have to activate my wildcard before or on Boxing Day. Can someone make my head stop spinning?

    Alonso Cedric Holebas
    Hazard Sanchez Payet Siggy deRoon
    Kane Origi

    (Grant, BSmith Costa* Ake*)

    C) Kane Ake ➡ Ibra Amat -4
    D) Kane Cedric ➡ Ibra Chambers/Barragan/Friend -4
    E) Cedric ➡ Jones

How nailed on is Phil Jones for the long term?

E.g. when Bailly and Smalling return will he struggle to keep his place?

I think Bailly and Smalling are the preferred options long term. But with Bailly's injury issues + AFCON combined with Smalling's match fitness, he could play for the next 1-1,5 month... But at risk for sure.
