The Fantasy Football Scout Community have been busy on two fronts this week, with the World Cup knockout rounds prompting discussion of Fantasy team strategies and the early launch of the 2018/19 Fantasy Premier League game catching many by surprise.

A few site updates, including members-only comments and the “undo upvote” function, have also been rolled out over the last seven days.

We’ve got a round-up of the week’s hot topics, and the usual array of Community tables and competitions, in our regular article below.

The Hottest Topics

Rewind seven days and the World Cup round of 16 was yet to begin. G-Whizz gave us his excellent bookmakers-influenced clean sheet odds after the climax of the group stage before ZoumasBloomers asked Fantasy managers their plans as Argentina, Spain and Portugal fell by the wayside and presented us with a host of selection problems.

Legomane sparked a “stick-or-twist” captaincy strategy debate as the last-16 progressed before Stat gave us a welcome heads-up on the players who were one booking away from suspension as we mulled over our quarter-final teams.

G-Whizz returned with more shut-out probabilities for the quarters, while discussion on taking hits for a stronger bench in the McDonald’s FIFA game divided opinion. 420king‘s price rise/drop predictions helped site users stay ahead of the curve.

Pumpkinhead gave us a straight choice, meanwhile: Romelu Lukaku or Eden Hazard?

Away from the Fantasy side of things, Polka Wakey O’Dot was effusive in his praise for this summer’s tournament: is this the best World Cup ever?

Red Arrows gave us a one-wish dilemma, too: England winning the World Cup or individual Fantasy football success.

The gaping void that was two World Cup rest days were partially filled by the launch of Fantasy Premier League 2018/19 on Thursday (thanks Hasselbaink Forever!).

NorthernBoysLoveGravs was straight in there with the quest to find the lowest FPL ID, while RedLightning put an early call out for mini-league details and codes.

The rate-my-team requests were quickly flooding in – panda07 with the first – with this hot topic collecting the subsequent RMTs.

Revival rounded up some bargain buys, while Ludo scrutinised Wilfried Zaha, Marko Arnautovic and the other reclassified FPL assets.

Stat brought welcome news about a change in the rules regarding the weekly prize.

The aforementioned FFS site updates, meanwhile, started with the rolling out of members-only comments and the “undo upvote” function. The first such members-only comment prompted discussion on the set piece and penalty data.

Another tweak fixed the “double sign-in” issue that had plagued the members’ area.

Community Tables

The launch of Fantasy Premier League has prompted two of our number to create some helpful tables to assist our squad selections for the new season.

Mattias has focused on bonus points and in particular which defenders are strong performers on the Bonus Points System.

FPL Virgin, meanwhile, has blessed us with a trilogy of tables looking at the best defenders, midfielders and forwards for the coming season.

Community Tournaments

Ahead of the quarter-finals commencing on Friday, competition in the Fantasy Football Scout mini-league for the McDonald’s FIFA World Cup game was hotting up. The top of the league read as follows:

1. Sladuna (289 points)
2. Ludaslol (282 points)
3=. Akihabara (273 points)
3=. Eunuch999 (273 points)
3=. Hurrikanne (273 points)

Our Mods and Cons league, meanwhile, shaped up like this:

1. ZidanRamos (244 points)
2. JohannesN (236 points)
3. GSumner (232 points)
4. Matzi11a (220 points)
5. Geoff (213 points)

The latest update for Frøgball, which uses combined Fantasy scores to represent different nations, is here.

If you are running a community tournament or are thinking about starting one, and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round-ups, please email us a summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet, or head to head competition at geoff@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

World Cup Data

We’re delighted to offer World Cup data as an early addition to our regular season offering to help those playing Fantasy games over the summer.

We’ve secured Opta data, not only for the tournament itself, but also from the Qualifying Rounds for Europe and South America and for international friendlies involving the participating nations. This includes all the matches played right up to the tournament kick-off.

Just to stress, this World Cup offering comes packaged with the regular Fantasy Football Scout membership.

So...how mad would it be to go all out defence this season? 5 at the back and De Gea? Don’t we always say that’s where the value is? I’m considering it.

I’d be interested in looking for the ultimate 5 defenders who are a risk week in week out, even in tough fixtures.

          Azpi and Alonso...

    Draft 0.2

    Fabianski
    TAA - Soares - Mendy
    Mané - Salah - Dilva - Mkhitaryan
    Aguero - Tosun - Zaha

    Speroni - Chalobah - Tomkins - Bednarek

    Lukaku and kane at wc

In terms of Salah teams surely this has to be as good as it gets for now?

Only logged in this evening but would Imagine it’s pretty template

    De Gea / 4.0

Alonso / Trent / Daniels / Kiko or Holebas / Bednarek

    Salah / Silva / Mhiki / Deulofeu / Wally

    Kaku or Aguero / Firmino / 4.5

I had Wally and Firmino, but Tosun (on pens) should outscore Wally for 0.5m and 9m for another mid. You could squeeze in Mané at 9.5m with an extra 0.5m.

    Thoughts on this first draft?

    Begovic
    Alonso Robertson Douglas
    Salah(c) Ramsey Jota Sessengon
    Aguero(v) Arnautovic Zaha

    Fabianski Neves Alexander-Arnold Morrison

I promised myself at the end of last season not to let fixture difficult sway my decisions as much, specifically on attackers (will obviously consider it for defenders). I feel Arnautovic is fixture proof anyway.

Yep, im not going to worry about bad fixtures as much as I usually do. Form factor s king.

Just keep an eye on pre-season and how Pellegrino sets them up.

If you look at last season, Arnautovic only scored well against the “easier” fixtures.

Zero double digit jails against any of the top six etcetc.

With this in mind, fixtures do play a part when you are considering teams such as West Ham. But fixtures don’t mean anything when your considering players like Aguero or Auba etc IMO.

when Aguero does start to get rotated again it's nice that we have options like Aubameyang and Lukaku at the same price to swap him to, and Firmino, Vardy, Morata, Jesus, Giroud to downgrade to 🙂

Using last season's PPM stats and this seasons prices what's the highest score you can get from fielding 11 players (+ capt) with a budget of 81m ? The winning score last season was 2512, which is 66.1 points per week. I've managed to derive a lineup that gives 67.7 points per game, which would give a total of 2572 beating last years winner by 60 points and not having used any chips. Obviously this doesn't work in reality as it would require all the 11 players to play 38 games. However, it give a good indication that the team should be competitive. All the players I used had played a minimum of 1000 minutes so this did not include those outliers such as Romero who played 1 game kept a CS and averaged 7 PPM. This might be a good way to evaluate your own RMTs.

Using last seasons PPM for your starters that gives you 61.5 points per week. Which is pretty strong, about 5 points per week lower than the winning score. But you're assuming that Coleman, Cedric and Mkhy perform better than they did last year so assuming they do, it looks like you'd be in good shape. Also Kane only scored 5.9 last season but 7.5 the season before, so if he gets back to 16/17 form you'd be looking really good.

If it hasn't been said yet, I think KDB might end up being essential this year.

    Raz is overpriced
David Silva might be rotated a little more for Bernardo
    Bernardo see above vice versa
Sane not nailed and maybe now Mahrez in
    Jorginho???

Kev has gone down .5m hasnt he this year?

Sign me up please. Might save .5m and straight swap for Sane as soon as he gets back from WC

What's that got to do with the price of fish?

Bernardo could play as a no.10 I'm sure anyway.

Nah just pure numbers of bodies and the fact that KDB is unstoppable outside of rest. Can't say the same for the others perhaps bar DSilva and now add Jorginho and Mahrez.

He started to play some centrally towards end of the season around CL knockouts and when Silva went home. I think Silva is safe up until the International break GW5 (hopefully he retires now) but will then be rotated around CL games.

A Belgium vs England final would see a lot of Spurs players return late to pre season, if they feature at all.

    Belgium:
    Alderweireld
    Vertonghen
    Dembele

    England:
    Trippier
    Rose
    Dier
    Alli
    Kane

Plus Lloris who would've played the semi final.

Considering Spurs don't have the best of starts, and don't play in their new stadium straight away, they're probably a wait and see at the moment.

    Hi all,

Just taking a look at the best 9.5m and 9.0m goalkeeper rotations that I could find. Assuming Foster is added to the game at 4.5m like Gomes and Dahlberg, we can look at the various decent combinations. I've taken the first half of the season (even though most won't plan on sticking with the pair for that long), i.e. 18 gameweeks.

Pickford/Foster (£9.5m): BRI/ wol, SOT/ bur, CRY, HUD, WHM, ful, FUL, BOU, CRY, HUD, BRI, sot, CAR, lei, NEW, WAT, CAR, WHM.
    - Potentially 15 home fixtures out of 18 with only GW12 (sot) and GW14 (lei) the trickiest games.

Pickford/ Bettinelli (£9.5m): CRY, WAT, BUR, bri, wol, BOU/ WAT, car, HUD, car, BOU, hud, lei, NEW/ SOT, cry, LEI, BRI, WHM, new, WOL
    - 11 home games of 18 with maybe two or three tricky fixtures in there

McCarthy/ Schmeichel (£9.5m): BUR, WOL, LEI, cry, BRI, HUD, wol, EVE, bou, WHM/ NEW, car, BUR/ WAT, ful/ bri, WAT, ful, car, cry, hud, WHM
    - 10 home games of 18, away fixtures are favourable enough

McCarthy/ Pope (£9.5m): BUR, WAT, ful, cry, BRI/ wol, BOU, car/ wol, HUD, bou, NEW, whm, WAT, NEW/ ful, cry, LIV/ tot, BRI/ car, tot/ ARS, hud, WHM
    - Potentially 12 home fixtures of 18 but it must be noted GWs 15 and 17 are very unfavourable so an exit route can be planned by then.

McCarthy/ Fabianski (£9.0m): BUR, BOU, LEI, WOL, BRI, CHE, wol, bri, bou, NEW, BUR, WAT, ful, new, CAR, CRY/ car, ful, WAT/ hud, WHM
    - Potentially 13 home fixtures of 18. Notably GW6 at home to Chelsea is the only real problematic week.

McCarthy/ Foster (£9.0m): BUR/ BRI, bur, CRY, cry, BRI, ful, wol, BOU, bou/ wol, HUD, new, WAT, ful, MUN/ lei, MCI/ tot, car, CAR, hud, WHM
    - Potentially 10 home fixtures of 18, but GWs 14 and 15 are very tough but by then an exit route can be planned.

Begovic/ Fabianski (£9.0m): CAR, BOU, EVE, WOL, LEI, bur, CRY, wat/ bri, SOT, ful, BUR, hud, MCI/ ARS, new, HUD/ CAR, CRY, wol/ ful, BRI/ WAT, sot
    - 12 home fixtures out of 18. GW13 is notably tough, but as mentioned, by then a WC plan may be panned or an alternative exit route.

Interesting. McCarthy Fab send the obvious £9m option, but neither team's defense was brilliant last year so remains to be seen whether they're worth it over the premium keepers.
Then again, I did start with triple Soton defence last year. Not to be repeated.

      Nice rotation up to GW11:

CRY, SOT, BUR, HUD, WHM, WAT, FUL, lei, CRY, BOU, BRI

10 out of 11 home fixtures that are all pretty handy, only tricky one is Leicester away in GW8

few iffy fixtures in GW5, 7 and 8 but I think it looks decent
