As was the case last week, the Fantasy Football Scout Community’s attention has been split roughly down the middle with Fantasy World Cup approaching its climax and the launch of Fantasy Premier League 2018/19 provoking debate.

Rainer and the exquisitely named Ohhh Shola Ameobi helped bridge the two games with a look at the Premier League teams most affected by the ongoing tournament and when the players involved in the 2014 World Cup returned to domestic action.

We’ve got a round-up of the week’s hot topics, and the usual array of Community tables and competitions, in our regular article below.

The Hottest Topics

This time last week, we were midway through the World Cup quarter-finals and Legomane asked whether sticking or twisting was the best option regarding Fantasy World Cup captaincy.

G-Whizz returned with his regular clean sheet odds hot topic ahead of the semi-finals, while rainy mused on the anticlimax that was the yellow card count.

Rainer, meanwhile, helpfully pointed out that Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea could be badly hit by their players returning late from international duty.

Before the semi-finals commenced, our Community discussed their transfers, captains and chips. With England and Belgium set to contest the third-place play-off later today, Siva Mohan looked at the rotation between the semi-finals and the fairly meaningless “bronze medal” match in the 2014 World Cup.

Legomane returned with a stick-or-twist semi-final special, as did G-Whizz with his last look at the clean sheet odds of this World Cup.

Ohhh Shola Ameobi examined the precedent of when the Premier League players involved in the semi-finals of the 2014 World Cup returned to their respective clubs.

World Cup ongoing or not, there’s no escaping the buzz around the FFS Community regarding the FPL launch.

Maximus Bonimus Pointimus asked if other managers adopted a player-orientated or structure-based approach to their Gameweek 1 squads, while Giggs Boson looked at the merits of both goalkeeper rotation and one Charlie Daniels.

Holding Matip held court while discussing five at the back and value according to position, while HamezMace floated the idea of a very early wildcard.

Rich2086 and Prøfeßor Bear gave a rundown of the Wolves side and warned us not to write off their assets, before CloudSky looked at some of the eye-catching fixture runs in the first quarter of the season.

Eden Wizard, meanwhile, suggested that Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero could well play together at the start of the season.

Norman Conquest rounded up the latest additions to the FPL game and their respective prices.

Our “members only” hot topics concentrated on the Rate My Team launch and, using this tool, what the best team over the first six Gameweeks would be.

The Eliteserien summer break was also a source of discussion, with Dupuytrens looking ahead to the transfer window and European Under-19 Championship.

Community Tables

Our members have been hard at work this week, creating no fewer than 13 public stats tables. FPL Virgin, in particular, has been beavering away, creating nine of those tables including the best defence of last season and the talisman theory.

Wainright looked at defenders who made the most penalty box touches, while easilythebest listed the players who had the most “big chances” last season.

Hotdogs-for-tea, meanwhile, rounded up the defenders who created the most chances and were the most attacking in 2017/18.

Community Tournaments

Ahead of the third-place play-off and final, competition in the Fantasy Football Scout mini-league for the McDonald’s FIFA World Cup game is hotting up. The current top of the league reads as follows:

1. Sladuna (385 points)
2. Lincon316 (363 points)
3. Ludaslol (362 points)
4. SmokinBadger (361 points)
5=. Matt5138008 (358 points)
5=. McGettigan16 (358 points)

Our Mods and Cons league, meanwhile, shaped up like this:

1. ZidanRamos (336 points)
2. GSumner (323 points)
3. JohannesN (309 points)
4. Jackpenn (300 points)
5. Matzi11a (296 points)

The latest update for Frøgball, which uses combined Fantasy scores to represent different nations, is here.

If you are running a community tournament or are thinking about starting one, and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round-ups, please email us a summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet, or head to head competition at geoff@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

Not sure if this has already been posted but how will Shaqiri affect liverpool's midfield?

Is this more incentive to avoid everyone but Salah, Mane and Firminho in attack?

No way IMO. He will provide them depth and the odd start I would think.

You think he’ll be in a central position? I would’ve thought that he’d be too attacking for that. He’s not exactly great at tracking back.

He should come off he bench for Mané or Salah or Firmino if they are 3 goals up with 30 mins left, or 2 goals up with 10 mins left etc, but he should be no danger to their starting places

I can hear him now. Something like: "I don't know, really, because these things can come back to bite you, but it seeeems like Aguero is just a nostalgia pick, and we might be picking him for the wrong reasons, but he could always score a hattrick next game to prove me wrong"

In your head: "FPL Virgin, don't buy Aguero. He won't score. I love you"

True, but I’d rather have Sané + 0.5 as a KDB placeholder.

Sanchez is very interesting at that price, but his form from last season is just too fresh in he mind.

He was running around with his little beer belly, could hardly lift his leg to shoot, and just generally looked like he is too old and fat for football now. The Mourinho factor certainly doesn’t help things either.

You’d want minimum 200 points for 10.5 and Sanchez got 150 last year, where half of that was in an attacking Wenger team. A full season I. Adefensive Mourinho team doesn’t fill me with confidence.

But who knows, we could all be ripping up our teams for GW2 if he scores 2 and sets up 1 v Leicester.

Feel he underperfomed massively last season, which includes playing half the season without motivation at Arsenal
If you look at it, without Lukaku Pogba for the first few games, his goal involvement for the United goals would be pretty high and fixtures ain't bad

          1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus

Things do seem to be in his favour selection wise for GW1. But last year I just saw a player who was finished at the very highest level. He was slow, defenders had a much easier time with him, he was overweight, and didn’t like having to track back n Mourinho’s system, his body language wasn’t great.

He’s also 30 in a couple of months & I don’t know how much motivation he could really have now after years in England, strikes me a bit like Rooney was towards the end of his Utd spell which is not a good thing!

But definitely I am in no way ruling him out, he could do very well. I just won’t be starting with him until he shows some form

Not that you are saying this, but people make the mistake of thinking that playing through the middle = more goals. Definitely not the case. It's just a position.

Some of the biggest scorers around come in from wide and when they get given a position through the middle produce less (FPL points).

In your lineup, you'd have to think Lacazette is pushing Auba wide, so Lacazette, though Ramsey could compete for this slot too if you think of it as 4321.

Likwise, with 3 behind the striker, it could be Laca pushing Auba wide again, or some people think Ramsey could be competing with Mkhi for one of those places on the "wing". I personally think we need another attacker like Zaha for this formation to be viable, so we can have the luxury of rotating resting Laca or Auaba once in a while - or rotating for tactical reasons - without having to play an Iwobi. Though admittedly this wouldn't be an issue if Ramsey was pushed up the pitch, though I feel it's less likely, and I would happily see Xhaka lose minutes 🙂

As others say, Ozil's not cemented in the team. I'd have been happy to seel him this window or last summer, but since he is staying, youve got to assume that he heavily is in Emery's plans. Otherwise it's a missed opportunity to cash in (despite a likely relatively unimpressive valuation for such a big name).

Hopefully we'll see the spark in him that we saw at times lat season, but over the ourse of the whole season this time around 😀

Any predicted lineups for today since I wont be home before they come out?
Are these that most previews seem to be agreeing on accurate?

England XI: Butland; Jones, Cahill, Maguire; Alexander-Arnold, Dier, Loftus-Cheek, Rose; Dele, Lingard; Vardy

Belgium XI: Courtois, Alderweireld, Kompany, Boyata, Meunier, Fellaini, Witsel, Chadli, De Bruyne, Batshuayi, T.Hazard

Actually the England’s one is way off isn’t it with only Trippier being replaced maybe?

So it seems. Maybe Rashford will get a game?

Also I imagine Kane will start. Assuming Lukaku's playing, who is his closest WCGB rival.

Haven’t thought of a WC strategy yet other than try to hold onto it as long as possible... from memory was there a DGW before GW19 last year that could repeat itself? That could be the opportunity

Sticking with Stephens unless/until another proves self. Think the concerns about possible Stephens price drop due to high ownership overdone. Plus, there’s always http://www.fplstatistics.co.uk to help with that.

Fabianski on his own. Will save you money and get you MORE points than with a rotation, as per last year

Better option than Patricio? I want to go with a 4.5-4.0 this year

If Morata is first choice this year I think he will be able to collect 200 points if he plays 3000 minutes.

He'll need to play a hell of a lot better than last season

11 goals and 6 assists (122 points) in 2000 minutes is okay for a debut season. Morata with more help this year because Sarri plays quite attacking I think 175 - 200 is realistic.

          Don't make him look good
He missed sitters last season, can't say he didn't get help, absolutely horrible, surely can't start with him with the new manager cuz we don't know how he looks at it.

Wait for Chelsea transfer news. 2 former Napoli players in the running, they'll prob start under Sarri.

Hoping one of him or Giroud nail down a place, need a starting 8.0-9.0 striker & they fit the bill perfectly
