After four successive top-half finishes, each achieved as their best players (and the occasional manager) were picked off by “bigger” clubs, Southampton diced with death in 2017/18.

A run of one win in 21 fixtures between late-November and the end of April left the Saints in the relegation zone with just four matches to spare, before Mark Hughes steered the club to Premier League safety with victories over Bournemouth and Swansea City.

Hughes’ appointment in March not only sparked an upturn in form but also led to a change of system, with the Welshman ditching Mauricio Pellegrino’s 4-2-3-1 in favour of a 3-4-2-1 – the repercussions of which for Fantasy managers we will discuss later.

Southampton assets weren’t a reliable source of points for Fantasy Premier League bosses last season: of the current squad, only Ryan Bertrand broke the 100-point barrier.

Charlie Austin‘s campaign was, once again, hampered by injury, while frequent rotation in the centre-back positions (not one centre-half made more than 30 starts) meant that the likes of Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens proved to be undependable budget defensive picks.

Not that the Saints’ defence was an attractive proposition anyway – only Bournemouth and Stoke City kept fewer clean sheets in the Premier League than Southampton (eight) last season.

That Austin, who made only ten starts and 14 substitute appearances, finished as the Saints’ leading league goal-scorer on seven goals said a lot about Southampton’s struggles in the opposition box, too.

The south coast club’s decent-looking opening run of fixtures this season – Burnley (h), Everton (a), Leicester City (h), Crystal Palace (a), Brighton and Hove Albion (h) – are inviting from a Fantasy perspective, but the Saints’ woes last season are evidently still at the forefront of many FPL managers’ minds; Cedric Soares is the only Southampton player who currently has a double-digit ownership.

In-depth data on Southampton’s season is available in the Members’ Area, while Fantasy Football Scout members can also read our detailed analysis of the key statistics in the article below.

Schurrle to Fulham will be an incredible deal. A 27-year-old winger with a World Cup Final assist to his name.

The financial muscle of the PL from top to bottom is astounding.

So Malcom to Barcelona means Willian deal is probably off. With the kind of money tvey've rejected I feel Sarri counts on him strongly this season, could be an interesting pick if he does end up staying.

So, it looks I'll be starting GW1 with this:

    Ederson (4.0)
    Robertson Azpi Bailly Coleman PVA
    Salah Mahrez (Cairney Costa Hughes)
    Zaha Aguero Wood

Yes, very heavy on defence. But I see them as providing guaranteed returns over a good period of time. They rotate so well over the first 8 weeks to always give me a back 4 at least. Say I downgrade 1 or 2 of them to 4.0/4.5 DF's, that extra 2-3m only really lets me upgrade a 5.0 MD to someone who may or may not fire in the 7.0-8.0m range. And I do quite like all 3 of those 5.0 MD's!

I think it's worth a try. Wildcard planned after GW8 anyway so can always switch it around if necessary!

    Thoughts?

I like the idea. I do.

The only thing for me is it doesn't allow you a lot of flexibility. You're talking about keeping those 5 defenders over the season, which is fine, and as you said a guaranteed source of decent points over the 38 gameweeks.

However, if you decide that you need to bring in another big hitter up front, or in midfield, then it'll inevitably be one of your defenders who makes way... and possibly before they've had their run of clean sheets that you originally brought them in for.

      1. The_Adam
        • 11 Years
        7 years, 4 months ago

If I stick to my wildcard plans ahead of GW9 then that defence just needs to get me through til then, not necessarily the entire season. Their collective fixtures beyond that point look a lot less appealing for a number of weeks, so I'll either change tactic or switch to other premium defenders with nice fixtures that rotate well, if it's been working.

Not too worried about having to bring in another big hitter up front. Already expecting to want Auba after GW2, so Aguero makes way (unless he's gone goal crazy in the opening 2 weeks), and having Wood & Zaha allows me to switch around between what I believe are really good options in that price bracket. Can't wait to bring in Arnie once WHU's nasty looking start is out of the way.

What’s people’s opinion on double ups in defence? I think it’s always better to have a double up in defence as opposed to a load of defenders and keeper from different sides. Surely if you have a double up in total ur relying on just 3 teams getting cs as opposed to 4 assuming ur playing three at the back that is (Including keeper). Now a lot of people might be put off because they don’t want to miss out an attacking assets from those teams, because generally a good defensive side is normally a good attacking side at the same time. But Man U and Chelsea can be good options, expensive but good. And u can focus ur attack on all the other teams instead.

I normally go for as many attacking defenders as I can which means they are rarely in the same team.

Double ups can work, don't think they are necessarily better though, if that was the case then a triple up would also be better.

I always try them, but in 10 seasons I’m actually trying to remeber a time when I got them right. I literally cannot remeber one clearly... but can re,ever 100’s that didn’t work! Depends on the team obviously, Burnley would have been great last year

Great when it works...gut punch when it doesn't

I had triple Burnley defence at the end of last season.

Got one CS that was amazing

Got a lot of conceding in the 90th minute...not much fun when a goal conceded costs you 12pts + 4-6 bonus!!!

A few seasons ago I tripled up in defence with Dier Vertonghen and Alderweireld and it went exceptionally poorly. Last minute goals wiping away 12 points was painful. I eventually gave up and they kept like 5 CS's in 6. It was exhausting.

Personally don't like the Cedric pick but that is purely down to the fact I don't fancy any teams chances when they have Mark Hughes as a manager

Hi..im new with this..please help me review my team
    Pope(fabianski)
    Cesar, alonso, stones,douglas(zanka)
    Salah,kdb,eriksen,milivojevic(neves)
    Arnoutovic, zaha ( kamara)

Just Fab and Pope to 4.0, competition for that spot
Stones not an option anyway but with WC definitely not.
      Will KDB start after WC
Double Che defence could be good but costs a lot. Alonso has some doubt over position too.

Fab with west ham now. Tough competition with adrian. If he can secure no1 then that will be great

Stones is not nailed , KDB might miss the first couple of games and i'm not sure Mili scoring loads of pens again this year is sustainable , also having 2 mid priced forwards is fine but you'll need to do some serious surgery if you want to get the likes of Kane or Auba in later

Thanks. As long as zaha keep on dive in box then milli can get the pen :p. Need to change kdb with mane maybe

      Yes

EVE is turning into Spurs from a few years back when they had more attacking mids than any other type of player. Rotation nightmare for the first few weeks imho. Which is a shame with their good fixtures.

Reposting my thoughts on the 6.5m midfielders.

Fàbregas: Not nailed. Could be great value if he nails the pivotal role (https://goo.gl/T6C1RP), similar to Hamsik in Napoli. With no further signings, I think Fábregas/Barkley/Loftus-Cheek will compete for that role. Possible differential.

Pedro: Not nailed. Will probably play for the first few weeks in the front 3 before Willian starts playing. Hence, could be a good option for those planning early wildcards.

Milivojevic: Nailed. Easy fixtures. On penalties. Boring but secure.

Walcott: Potential for goals and assists. Proven in the EPL. Even in 2016/17 season, he scored 120 points while playing only 1900 minutes. Will he get enough time of the pitch this season? If so, he could become the best value player this season.

Sessegnon: Good history in the Championship, but I don't expect Fulham to be an attacking team. For me, wait and watch.

Maddisson: Norwich fans will swear by him. Gray and Maddisson are vying for that vacancy left by Mahrez. Lets see who gets that spot. Could be potentially interesting. If you have the guts, go for him.

Oxlade-Chamberlain: Injured and ruled out for the season. Avoid.

Mata: Good option before the players from World Cup gets back to the squad. But, I would not pick an attacker from a Mourinho team.

    Elyounoussi: Unknown as of yet.

Lamela: People have been touting him as a potential bargain in fpl for years but it never really happens for him. He just doesn't get enough goals or assists to be a good pick even if he starts.

Richarlison: Exciting prospect. Had a fantastic few games with Marco Silva, and then fizzled out, so price is low. Reunited with Silva, can he regain his form?

Jota: Unknown. Many scouts are touting him as a potential bargain. I have not seen him enough to comment.

Lanzini: Injured and will probably miss entire season. Avoid.

I am currently on Richarlison. Fingers twitching for a switch.

I'm on Jota at the moment. Owned him in a fantasy before and he got 1 goal in 3 games and that was against a PL team.

Richi jury out after poor form when Silva did not get the Everton job. Could be good though. Lamela I like if he were going to get game time. Point per minute high last year. Milli safe boring pick
All round a nice analysis. Well Done!

Maddison will be playing as a No. 10, not as Mahrez's replacement. Hopefully Mahrez's replacement is still to come. Gray shouldn't be starting

Too many punty choices in my honest opinion.

      - Two 4.0s DEFs
      - Two NEWBIES MIDs to EPL
      - One punty FWD

Mkhi is also a bit of a punt IMO. Feel that Auba/Lacazette are better attacking picks, regardless of position. Ramsey too, in the same position.

        True on the punts.

The 4.0 def. are not supose to play actually. 343 is the way to go.

Might have to look again at yarmolenko when Chelseas lineup is more certain

      - Reasoning for Yedlin?
      - Think TAA will start the season?
      - Bournemouth just signed a RB.
      - Romeu not nailed and loves YCs (better 4.5s available in Ward/Chalobah)

Brave with no Arsenal/City forward.at the start, but I guess that's the risk on starting with Kane.

    Foster
    Shaw - Mendy - Robertson
    Salah - Mane - Mahrez - Richarlison
    Laca - Zaha - Arnautovic

    Fab - Stephens - WanBissaka - Bennett

Will downgrade Mane if Auba looks essential later on post gw3/4

    Shaw to Papastathopoulos/Bellerin

    Thoughts?

No, simply because I reckon Otamendi is more likely to start.

Mendy is a superb pick, just need guarantees as to how City set up.
