Best Southampton players to sign on FPL in 2018/19 – Complete Members’ Analysis

After four successive top-half finishes, each achieved as their best players (and the occasional manager) were picked off by “bigger” clubs, Southampton diced with death in 2017/18.

A run of one win in 21 fixtures between late-November and the end of April left the Saints in the relegation zone with just four matches to spare, before Mark Hughes steered the club to Premier League safety with victories over Bournemouth and Swansea City.

Hughes’ appointment in March not only sparked an upturn in form but also led to a change of system, with the Welshman ditching Mauricio Pellegrino’s 4-2-3-1 in favour of a 3-4-2-1 – the repercussions of which for Fantasy managers we will discuss later.

Southampton assets weren’t a reliable source of points for Fantasy Premier League bosses last season: of the current squad, only Ryan Bertrand broke the 100-point barrier.

Charlie Austin‘s campaign was, once again, hampered by injury, while frequent rotation in the centre-back positions (not one centre-half made more than 30 starts) meant that the likes of Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens proved to be undependable budget defensive picks.

Not that the Saints’ defence was an attractive proposition anyway – only Bournemouth and Stoke City kept fewer clean sheets in the Premier League than Southampton (eight) last season.

That Austin, who made only ten starts and 14 substitute appearances, finished as the Saints’ leading league goal-scorer on seven goals said a lot about Southampton’s struggles in the opposition box, too.

The south coast club’s decent-looking opening run of fixtures this season – Burnley (h), Everton (a), Leicester City (h), Crystal Palace (a), Brighton and Hove Albion (h) – are inviting from a Fantasy perspective, but the Saints’ woes last season are evidently still at the forefront of many FPL managers’ minds; Cedric Soares is the only Southampton player who currently has a double-digit ownership.

More points in defence than Hughes at that price.

Looked at his stats too. He will probably be 6.5 to 7. Could be a super pick though. Suffered injuries last year. I tend to agree with you though.

Reposting my thoughts on the 6.5m midfielders.

Fàbregas: Not nailed. Could be great value if he nails the pivotal role (https://goo.gl/T6C1RP), similar to Hamsik in Napoli. With no further signings, I think Fábregas/Barkley/Loftus-Cheek will compete for that role. Possible differential.

Pedro: Not nailed. Will probably play for the first few weeks in the front 3 before Willian starts playing. Hence, could be a good option for those planning early wildcards.

Milivojevic: Nailed. Easy fixtures. On penalties. Boring but secure.

Walcott: Potential for goals and assists. Proven in the EPL. Even in 2016/17 season, he scored 120 points while playing only 1900 minutes. Will he get enough time of the pitch this season? If so, he could become the best value player this season.

Sessegnon: Good history in the Championship, but I don't expect Fulham to be an attacking team. For me, wait and watch.

Maddisson: Norwich fans will swear by him. Gray and Maddisson are vying for that vacancy left by Mahrez. Lets see who gets that spot. Could be potentially interesting. If you have the guts, go for him.

Oxlade-Chamberlain: Injured and ruled out for the season. Avoid.

Mata: Good option before the players from World Cup gets back to the squad. But, I would not pick an attacker from a Mourinho team.

    Elyounoussi: Unknown as of yet.

Lamela: People have been touting him as a potential bargain in fpl for years but it never really happens for him. He just doesn't get enough goals or assists to be a good pick even if he starts.

Richarlison: Exciting prospect. Had a fantastic few games with Marco Silva, and then fizzled out, so price is low. Reunited with Silva, can he regain his form?

Jota: Unknown. Many scouts are touting him as a potential bargain. I have not seen him enough to comment.

Lanzini: Injured and will probably miss entire season. Avoid.

I am currently on Richarlison. Fingers twitching for a switch.

I'm on Jota at the moment. Owned him in a fantasy before and he got 1 goal in 3 games and that was against a PL team.

Richi jury out after poor form when Silva did not get the Everton job. Could be good though. Lamela I like if he were going to get game time. Point per minute high last year. Milli safe boring pick
All round a nice analysis. Well Done!

Maddison will be playing as a No. 10, not as Mahrez's replacement. Hopefully Mahrez's replacement is still to come. Gray shouldn't be starting

You have done a whole members article on Southampton and not mentioned Bednarek? I first this strange to be honest. He was used in a back 3 (call it five if you want) system at the end of the season. If you look at the ins and outs after the Stephens red card (and then Yoshida) it appears Bednarek may be ahead of Stephens and Yoshida in the pecking order. He only missed out on the final day due to injury and might be worth a stab at 4.0, considering he may be preferred as a regular. Even if he doesn't get regular football (more likely if Hughes doesn't stick to a back 3) it is worth mentioning (especially in a members article.

Hello everyone. Thoughts on these two teams, please - the first is a new one I've just done in spur of the moment, the second is the one I'm leaning toward.

    Team A

    GK: Fabi/ Foster
    DEF: Bailly / Cedric / Lovren (Tomkins / 4.0)
MID: Mkhi / Salah / Sane / Deoulofeu / Townsend
    ATTK: Firmino / Kane (Kamara)

    Team B

    GK: Fabi / Foster
DEF: Bailly / Cedric / Lovren (Tomkins / Daniels)
MID: Mkhi / Salah / Sane / Deoulofeu / Stephens
ATTK: Firmino / Auba / Tosun

    Cheers!
