After four successive top-half finishes, each achieved as their best players (and the occasional manager) were picked off by “bigger” clubs, Southampton diced with death in 2017/18.

A run of one win in 21 fixtures between late-November and the end of April left the Saints in the relegation zone with just four matches to spare, before Mark Hughes steered the club to Premier League safety with victories over Bournemouth and Swansea City.

Hughes’ appointment in March not only sparked an upturn in form but also led to a change of system, with the Welshman ditching Mauricio Pellegrino’s 4-2-3-1 in favour of a 3-4-2-1 – the repercussions of which for Fantasy managers we will discuss later.

Southampton assets weren’t a reliable source of points for Fantasy Premier League bosses last season: of the current squad, only Ryan Bertrand broke the 100-point barrier.

Charlie Austin‘s campaign was, once again, hampered by injury, while frequent rotation in the centre-back positions (not one centre-half made more than 30 starts) meant that the likes of Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens proved to be undependable budget defensive picks.

Not that the Saints’ defence was an attractive proposition anyway – only Bournemouth and Stoke City kept fewer clean sheets in the Premier League than Southampton (eight) last season.

That Austin, who made only ten starts and 14 substitute appearances, finished as the Saints’ leading league goal-scorer on seven goals said a lot about Southampton’s struggles in the opposition box, too.

The south coast club’s decent-looking opening run of fixtures this season – Burnley (h), Everton (a), Leicester City (h), Crystal Palace (a), Brighton and Hove Albion (h) – are inviting from a Fantasy perspective, but the Saints’ woes last season are evidently still at the forefront of many FPL managers’ minds; Cedric Soares is the only Southampton player who currently has a double-digit ownership.

In-depth data on Southampton’s season is available in the Members’ Area, while Fantasy Football Scout members can also read our detailed analysis of the key statistics in the article below.

    Evening all!

I would hope for MOST of my players to return at least 100 points each over the season.

So, looking at the CURRENT prices and listed scorers for LAST season up to 5.5m

12 keepers scored 100 points or more
17 defenders scored 100 points or more
8 midfielders scored 100 points or more
0 forwards scored 100 points or more

Clearly I would like to avail of my full squad to cater for injuries, rotation, no fixtures, bad fixtures, double game weeks etc

So if you are looking to utilise cheaper midfielders or forwards you could be lucky to get any meaningful points from them. This is FAR from exact I know, but playing the odds should hopefully result in a higher overall score I think!

Good analysis this. For all those people saying a high value defender is better than a similar priced forward, it's definitely true, but equally if you want points from attackers you need to spend money there, so cheaper defenders will allow you to do that

Didn't a 5.5 midfielder beat all those defenders and 11 of those keepers?

Thanks for good work. Yet it is worth noticing that forwards are more expensive than defs and even the cheapest bench fodding fw costs 4.5. With 4.0 there may be even some starting defenders. So basicly you should include also 6.0 forwards for direct comparison with defenders. It is 1.5 millions above minimum cost, just like with 5.5 def.

The Burnley preseason report talked about the uncertainty of GK position with Heaton and Pope.

Is that right? How can Pope be in doubt?

so surely when everyone is back and we know more about the Chelsea arsenal teams etc then we will be looking at
Trippier, TAA, Bellerin/Kola, Emerson, Bailly, Mendy, Robbo, VVD, Azpi plus a fair few others
how do we only pick 3 or 4 out of them? its got to be 5 at the back after a few game weeks...hasnt it??

I think having 4.5s with good fixtures. ie Cedric, Daniels, Watford etc is an absolute waste of time. The fixtures do look good on paper but these teams just can't keep clean sheets
Tripper for me will be in and will be played week in week out especially if he gets on any set pieces
If TAA comes back and is nailed its an absolute no brainer to have him
Bellerin/Kola will be in possibly just for their long run of good fixtures and if nailed
Emerson is again a no brainer if nailed...big if I know
Bailly, having a united defender for 5.5 is again a no brainer regardless of fixtures
Mendy is risky but could be amazing
        Robbo is a season keeper
VVD..would rather have Robbo or a nailed TAA
        Azpi is Azpi

Listen, do what you think is best. Anything can work out if you pick the right players. Some people in the top 10k will play with 5 at the back, more will play with 3 or 4

I would comfortably pick 5 out of this lot and stick with them
the FTs can be used to jump on a 5.5-6.5 midfield bandwagon and juggle Kane, Auba, Kaku, Kun etc

I will already have Bailly Robertson VVD and Tarowski and a 4.0.

      I am happy with that.
I feel that five leaves the rest of the team too unbalanced.
I am going 4-3-3 with two 4.5m mids

Just reading Paul Madeley's wiki page and it makes you remember when players were club legends.

"In his autobiography, Right Back to the Beginning, Revie's successor Jimmy Armfield related a telling story about Madeley negotiating a new contract: "He once actually signed a new contract on what was virtually a blank piece of paper. I called him in to discuss terms and opened discussions by saying, 'OK, Paul, we'll give you so much'. He replied that he had no intention of leaving Leeds so he might as well sign the contract and let me fill in the details. I said, 'What do you want, then, two years or three years?' He answered, 'Either way, I'll leave it to you. I just want to play for Leeds,' and that was that."

I would have put him on a 100 year deal for next to nothing. After he retired I’d make him work sweeping the stands after games

Considering my bench currently consists of (4.0 GK, 4.0 DEF, 2x 4.5 strikers)...

    A. Otamendi + PvA + Jota -> Robertson + Shaw + Siggy.
    B. Otamendi + PvA + 4.5 striker -> Robertson + Shaw + 5.5 striker (to improve my bench, just in case).

    1. Carlton P
      • 10 Years
      8 years, 1 month ago

hard to say what to do without seeing your team but I would rather have a 4.5/5.0 mid than a 4.5 striker
Probably get Wood, King, Zaha or Arnie involved

      1. Obi-1 Kenobi-0
        • 11 Years
        8 years, 1 month ago

        Ederson (Steele)
        Otamendi PvA Coleman Douglas (Bednarek)
        Salah Sanchez Mahrez Jota Cairney
        Aguero (Kamara, Quaner)

        Playing 4-5-1 so can't really have a 4.5 mid.

        1. Carlton P
          • 10 Years
          8 years, 1 month ago

its Sanchez that has to go imo. your funds are better spread around so maybe get Ramsey in (7.5) for example
then you've got 3.0 to upgrade Quaner or Kamara to one of the strikers I mentioned.
Cairney should be your first on the bench mist weeks
Also you've got 4 City so you should probably take out Otamendi

Like some of your picks like Mendy and Mkhi, but too many flakey starters with Kamara and a 4.0

Nice one - which do you think are the riskiest starters?

Kamara. 4.0 player and even Chalobah

Anyone think Ross Barkley might get a place in the Chelsea midfield under Sarri?

    6m...nicely priced 😐

I think out of the players that Sarri has at his disposal he is the most like Hamsik. So could be a very astute differential if he starts

        This is what I thought

Suppose he loses Hazard and Willian...what's left ain't pretty

Old-man Fabregas, getting-older-man Pedro, RLC, Drinkwater.... bleeuurrgghhh 🙁

With slim pickings, he might be the one to benefit

Please RMT! I know it’s early but who else isn’t excited for another year of pain, sorrow and distress?

    McCarthy (Fabianski)

    Bailly, Robertson, Cedric, (Daniels, Tomkins)

    Salah, Mkhi, Willian, Lennon (Wilshere)

    Firmino, Aguero, Arni

Not a fan of goalkeeper rotation. Go with £5.5 Ederson and a £4.0 - needs an extra £0.5m so downgrade Wilshere.

Not that sold on Lennon because of Burnley's small squad with the Europa campaign but hard to find value from £5.0/£4.5 midfielders and he's as good a shout as any. I quite like the look of Costa at Wolves perhaps?

            How about Wilshere>Stephens then Lennon>Fabregas

My opinion is that Firmino should be avoided to begin with.

I just see him as the easy option for fickle managers to downgrade in-order to get the post GW1 bandwagon and with his ownership being high stands more chance of losing value than gaining

    Thoughts?

A different take on value and captaincy - isolating 3 premium players/ spots (over 9/9.5m) to be your captaincy options for the season. Having over three premium players in a squad decimates the rest of it for me. Considering these spots as seperate from the rest of your squad stops you from bringing in premium players you're never going to captain which has been proven across all metrics to decrease their value compared to cheaper options and allows you to keep a solid team structure without jumping on bandwagons at every opportunity. Having Auba, Aguero and Salah together makes sense as long as they're your only premium players and you're going to share the captaincy around them. If you only want 1/2 captaincy options, then it's a different mindset - if you're without doubt going to permacap Salah or rotate Salah and Kun then there is a second/ third premium spot available to use at your leisure but in this case then going for players that are 9/9.5m instead of 11m is going to be a better use of that money value wise, as you can spread the remaining cash to improve the other 12 spots - without captaincy the difference between a 9m and 7.5m player compared to an 11m and a 5.5m player is going to be large if you choose shrewdly. Just my take on the recent value studies and a slightly different mental approach of how to play the game. All thoughts/ criticisms massively promoted and appreciated because I've been interested to see teams that still seem to be simply trying to cram in as many premium players as possible when for so long this has been proven to not be the way to play the game.

I'm going with Salah Aguero Auba and Eriksen as i think they'll all get loads of points!

Based on this, I have Salah, Aguero, Mahrez and Sanchez in my team, but can't really see myself captaining Alexis and definitely not Mahrez anytime soon... this post would suggest it's better to reinvest elsewhere?

Just consider what the money from downgrading Alexis could do to the rest of your team and then I'd suggest perhaps using the RMT tool alongside your own predictions for the season to find which option would get you more points.

What happens if Auba is better value than say Eriksen? Or Firmino? ppm/cost?

This is picking up on the sub point as opposed to the main point I was putting forward but in that case I'd still say consider what the 1.5m between those options could do to the rest of your team first and evaluate which option is going to get the most points. But in that case, which with a player like Auba may be possible, unless you're totally set on permacapping Salah then he'll very likely be a captaincy option so would be a perfectly logically sound pick.

Is there a consensus 5.5m midfielder yet? Looks like a fairly poor price point imo. Would rather pick a 5.0.
