After four successive top-half finishes, each achieved as their best players (and the occasional manager) were picked off by “bigger” clubs, Southampton diced with death in 2017/18.

A run of one win in 21 fixtures between late-November and the end of April left the Saints in the relegation zone with just four matches to spare, before Mark Hughes steered the club to Premier League safety with victories over Bournemouth and Swansea City.

Hughes’ appointment in March not only sparked an upturn in form but also led to a change of system, with the Welshman ditching Mauricio Pellegrino’s 4-2-3-1 in favour of a 3-4-2-1 – the repercussions of which for Fantasy managers we will discuss later.

Southampton assets weren’t a reliable source of points for Fantasy Premier League bosses last season: of the current squad, only Ryan Bertrand broke the 100-point barrier.

Charlie Austin‘s campaign was, once again, hampered by injury, while frequent rotation in the centre-back positions (not one centre-half made more than 30 starts) meant that the likes of Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens proved to be undependable budget defensive picks.

Not that the Saints’ defence was an attractive proposition anyway – only Bournemouth and Stoke City kept fewer clean sheets in the Premier League than Southampton (eight) last season.

That Austin, who made only ten starts and 14 substitute appearances, finished as the Saints’ leading league goal-scorer on seven goals said a lot about Southampton’s struggles in the opposition box, too.

The south coast club’s decent-looking opening run of fixtures this season – Burnley (h), Everton (a), Leicester City (h), Crystal Palace (a), Brighton and Hove Albion (h) – are inviting from a Fantasy perspective, but the Saints’ woes last season are evidently still at the forefront of many FPL managers’ minds; Cedric Soares is the only Southampton player who currently has a double-digit ownership.

In-depth data on Southampton’s season is available in the Members’ Area, while Fantasy Football Scout members can also read our detailed analysis of the key statistics in the article below.

Like I but I think I will punt on Pedro over Richarlson but will be closer to GW1.

Also similar to me bench is weak.

You're definitely going to want an 11m or certain 12.5m striker before too long.

    Slightly sadistic question:

Which player do you most wish to get injured the Thursday before the season starts?

Salah? Would make funds readily available...

    Rue-P
    Mendy Robertson Cedric
    Salah Sane Jota Lamela
    Aubu Arnie Tosun
    Fab Cairney Jags Wan-B
    0.5itb

Was on Siggy + Sørloth, but changed that to Tosun + Cairney. As I think 5m mids offer better value than 5m striker.
Jags will be whichever of the cheap Eve defs looked nailed.
Lamela a bit of punt, good start and end to last season and having a good pre-season, can easily swap to Mhki or Richarlison.

    Anyhow, thoughts appreciated

Lamela Arnie and Tosun could all be value picks but are risky too.

      Dont over think.

      Stop taking hits, d1ckhead.

Hold premiums, class is permanent form is temporary.

      Shunt out the others.

      - Iwobi here too.
      - Selling KDB for Mkhi because I had 2FTs and nothing to do.
      - Wildcarding from my 523 team to the template in GW10 (I think) because I bought Coutinho the evening before he got injured or something. Had enough other other issues for this mistake to catalyse a 30pt immediate loss from the WC

      1. Deulofail

        - starting with Kane instead of Lukaku, and sticking with him for too long, captaining frequently. (Went without for the last half of the season and did well despite his hauls)

In other words, mistakes I won't make again: not sticking to the plan, not adapting the plan, reacting too soon, reacting too late, reacting to nothing.

In other words: mistakes I will make again. 😆

      A) Don't try to be clever for the sake of being clever by taking unjustified risks.

      B) If a risk doesn't pay off, don't take another unjustified risk in an attempt to immediately make back lost ground.

      C) Remember there's plenty of opportunity

Not jumping on the Salah wagon early enough.

      Too many hits.

      Started with a premium defense.
I think a premium defense is something best left to be built upon a WC, when you know how teams/players are performing.

    Thoughts on willian?
Considering chelsea rejected big offers from barcelona, he seems a key part of sarri's team
    But still has limited gametime?
Hazard will play LW. They will likely get a new CF
    Kante and jorginho as CM
Willian may be first subtitute choice again this season?

Lloris Lovren Young Trippier probably back late from the World Cup.

Daniels might not be a starter with Rico coming in.

Neves has 4.9 written all over him.

Jorginho is a defensive mid and will probably never score.

Masuaku listed as a mid now, so his points total from previous years is misleading- they've also brought in loads of new players so we don't know how they'll line up.

I'd start again if I were you.

      1. Dr. Ante Pavlovic
        • 8 Years
        7 years, 11 months ago

        Thanks dor the feedback.

Neves on penalties, good fixtures, 5.0 is not a lot

Same as Jorginho, only 5.0, guaranteed starter and I think he could be golden differential, he will play in front of kante and could get some asissts and goals.

Masuaku costs 4.5, a decent bench option. If he continues playing on thr wing like last season I have no worries.

Defence is the real problem, still thinking about what to do here.

Jorginho at Napoli - 133 games 2 goals.

A valiant attempt, I too am beginning to lean towards assuming Kane will start the season.

Don't like the midfield. Think it's worth going with cheaper alternatives to PVA and Douglas and getting more defenders from better sides.

Thanks I'm toying between this and a top heavy 4-3-3.
Yes the midfield does look like it needs another bigger hitter in there - maybe Groß to Mhki? Although I do like Groß.
I like PVA and Douglas more than United defs and Coleman to be honest.

I was thinking more Man City/Arsenal/Spurs defenders. Could go Pickford and Stek in goal and PVA → Mendy.

Could give Gross a couple of weeks while Mkhi has tough fixtures to see how he'll do under Emery.

Hmm I'd rather have assured City starter like Ederson. Don't likr spending more than 4.5 on keeper but seems this is the best way to get a City defender.

Good idea re Mhki, I just hope Groß is still on pens with Norwood coming back.

Schlupp for palace has scored in pre-season. He is playing on the left of midfield. Wouldn't it be wise to grab him instead Van Aanholt?

Hey guys, what are your thoughts on the following?

    Pope/ Speroni

Tomkins, Robertson, Jagielka / Bennett, Peltier

    Salah, Sane, Mahrez, Richarlison, Delofeu

    Aubeymang, Vardy / Quaner

0.0 ITB, Not planning on using BB until the end + Firminho easy switch from Vardy once he's back and rolling.

Is Bailly nailed, who will play alongside him, Jones or Smalling?

Also, one opinion, if Spurs rest all semifinalists in gw1 who will they play then? Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Trippier, Lloris, you think all of them will get a rest?

General consensus is that Bailly will start gw1 but how long that lasts is unknown. Spurs starters gw1 a gamble really

6.5 5.5 range... I Would consider jota deulofeu if nailed or richarlison or even pedro
But those i'm not sure about their form and don't trust them so preseason will be intersting for players in this range.

Yeah I've gone for two 6.5m midfielders just because there's so much potential in that price range. Currently on Richarlison & Jota. I'm fairly certain I will start with Richarlison but keep changing my mind on Jota.

Richarlison could be good. As could other Everton lads like Walcott and Bolasie.

Someone at Chelsea out of Fabregas/Barkley is likely to be the 'creative spark' in Sarri's 433.

Wolves are getting a lot of hype- 7th Faves to win the league so Jota could be good.

Mhkitaryan looks good but Arsenal have a big squad so not sure how they'll line up. Got City and Chelsea up first so can wait and see with him.

Groß is pure quality but tough fixtures make him a wait and see as well I think.

These are the main options I'm looking at, but need more preseason to see.

there's loads of potentially good ones , any one of them can become a wagon for a time during the season , getting the right ones at the right times will go a long way to deciding the winner of FPL imo

If City continues to play with three at the back Walker will be one of them so Danilo should be wb?

Not sure Pep will be using a back three after his success with a 4-3-3 last season but Danilo should start a couple of games whilst Walker gets some post World Cup rest.

Hoilett could be a decent pick , 9 goals 11 assists in the league last year for Cardiff , he's their main attacking threat who has a fairly respectable fpl pedigree (119 points in 2011/12 season)

Not too sure on the midfielders in that price range atm. I think there might be more value in a 5.0 - 5.5 midfielder and a 7.0 forward combo than a 7.0 - 7.5 midfielder and 4.5 - 5.0 forward combo
The Martial situation is definitely one to monitor. I would like him if he is on form and nailed on to start for the first couple GWs

Just Fab and Pope to 4.0, competition for that spot
Stones not an option anyway but with WC definitely not.

Double Che defence could be good but costs a lot. Alonso has some doubt over position too.

Stones is not nailed , KDB might miss the first couple of games and i'm not sure Mili scoring loads of pens again this year is sustainable , also having 2 mid priced forwards is fine but you'll need to do some serious surgery if you want to get the likes of Kane or Auba in later
