Joshua King (£6.5m) scored his first goal of pre-season on Friday ahead of a campaign that could see him return to his best.

He was a revelation in 2016/17 when, classified as a midfielder, he registered 16 goals, three assists and 178 points while operating as Bournemouth’s centre-forward.

His follow up to that was disappointing by comparison. Shifted to a forward on Fantasy Premier League, the Norwegian international scored half-as many goals, provided three assists and amassed a total score of just 110 points.

However, some underlying data from the second-half of the season suggest an improvement in his fortunes in 2018/19.

CHERRY ON TOP

We may have recently revealed the goal threat of Ryan Fraser (£5.5m) and the injured Junior Stanislas (£6.0m), but it does appear that King was unlucky not to score more often in 2017/18. No Bournemouth player registered more touches in the box than King (140) and none of his team-mates had more shots there either (1.2 per game). His 21 shots on target was also a club-high, while only Fraser (16.7) had a better goal conversion rate than him (15.7). Furthermore, King scored more big chances than anyone else at the club (six), even though Callum Wilson (£6.0m) was presented with more of them. Last time around King was still the joint-top scorer with eight goals, but he could easily improve on that in the upcoming season.

CREATIVE STREAK

While the cheaper Wilson matched King’s goal tally in 2017/18, where the Norwegian has the advantage over his colleague was creativity, which could well justify spending an extra £0.5m on him this season. King created 38 chances last term, which ranked second among the Cherries, behind only Fraser and, crucially, double that of Wilson. It is no surprise then that King registered twice as many assists as his English colleague, with just Andrew Surman (£5.0m) and Jordon Ibe (£5.5m) putting up more.

END OF SEASON FORM

King did not start 2017/18 particularly well but was one of the many players who performed much bette in the second-half of the campaign. Between Gameweek 1 and 19, King was involved in just 23 percent of Bournemouth’s goals. From Gameweek 20 until the end of the season, he was involved 50 percent of the time. Considering the Cherries’ appealing early fixtures, especially at home, King could establish himself as an important figure in the opening 10 fixtures. A trip to Chelsea in Gameweek 4 looks the hardest, although the Cherries were still 3-0 winners there last time, while Cardiff, Everton, Leicester, Crystal Palace and Southampton will all visit the Vitality Stadium in the early months.

SELECTION ADVANTAGE

King could start the 2018/19 campaign as the first-choice centre-forward at Bournemouth, although it’s early days yet. So far, King has been involved in all three of the Cherries’ pre-season matches, featuring from the beginning on two occasions. Meanwhile Jermain Defoe (£6.0m) has two starts, three appearances and a goal too, but Wilson has featured just once. Furthermore, King racked up more starts that any other Bournemouth forward in 2017/18 (27).

Best 4.0 goalkeeper to partner Pickford?

Speroni way down the pecking order now. Boruc must be the most nailed number 2?

    Note:

Danny Ward (Cardiff 4.5) made 18 appearances, including 6 starts, last season, with 4 goals.

However he was actually out for a couple months with injury.

    Decent option?

For 4.5m he only gonna sit on your bench, so his price enables the rest of the squad. I'd go for him over Masuaku and other 4.5 if I had to.

Full time Brentford 1 Watford 2

Not too many FF talking points as we also played a friendly last night, so it’s difficult getting much idea of who the most probable starters will be in two weeks. Plus several key players are yet to feature pre-season because of injury (Doucoure, Deulofeu, Chalobah, Femenia).

Another goal for Andre Gray, who could be a decent cheap forward to start the season if we don’t sign anybody else up top. His first year at Watford wasn’t a success but he’s looked revitalised this summer.

I still expect Masina to start at left-back, and probably Navarro at right-back.

Hughes, Pereyra, Foster, Kabasele look certain starters too.

Hughes is playing out wide so far pre-season, which is frustrating as most of us feel central mid is his best position where he can affect a game most.

If Everton sign a new left-back it's pretty annoying how we probably won't know who Everton's new penalty taker is until they get a penalty. They've only got one friendly left after tonight's game and that's on the 4th of August. It also doesn't help that Tosun and Siggy both have extremely good penalty records (Tosun scored 25, missed 1 - Siggy scored 24, missed 3).

Back to good old 3-4-3... 5.0 GK could also be Pickford or Kasper if they go to Chelski

    Heaton
    VVD, PVA, Coleman
    Salah, Sane, Mahrez, Mili
    Firmino, Arnie, King
(Boruc, AWB, Ward, Bennet) + 0.5 ITB for Sane > KDB.

    Looking ok?

Eh, he's a DM. Either take Xhaka's place or play alongside him is Arsenal retain their back 3 + wingback formation. You could be indirectly right if Rambo and Micky are going for one spot.

Koscielny will be injured until around Christmas at least. Torreira will likely start instead of Mkhi when everyone's available. Formation is likely to be a fairly fluid 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 based on preseason games, with Auba out left and Laca as the sole striker.

I would say 4-2-3-1 best guess at moment...
      Leno
      Bellerin - Kos - Sokratis - Kolasinac
      Ramsey - Torreira
      Mkhitaryan - Ozil - Aubmameyang
      Lacazette

      Holding in until Kos back.
      Xhaka in until Torreira.
Emery known for regular fb rotation.

Yes. Definitely looking at possibility of diversifying to Vert/Toby(at Spurs or United) or other emergent premium def later.
        Cheers!

nae bother. I want spurs defence in at some point especially if they have a good run and are looking solid, but yeah don't think it's worth it just now. Only way maybe is if you punted on Bavies for attacking returns, but he's by no means nailed

Kinda hope in a way that Zaha goes off tae BVB... would make it easier picking Arnie over him from the get-go

And I would also take Wood, Tosun and King before Zaha as well.

Why's that? Not Tosun as I have an everton mid and it is everton we're talking about here.

Curious as to why not Zaha though? Attacking, good opening fixtures, draws a fair few fouls 😉

    Hello folks,

Kindly help out with the top five 4.0 defenders who are most likely to start in GW1.

    Thanks.

Not sure there are 5 lol, but you should get at least 1 or 2 from bennett, peltier, wan-bissaka. other than that don't know if there are any looking likely

    Foster Patricio
Robbo Shaw Tomkins / Daniels AWB
Siggy Salah Jota Mahrez / Stephens
    Auba Zaha Arnie

    1.5 ITB

    Thinking:
    - Laca for Auba to free up even more funds to bring in erik or mane
    - Siggy or Ramsey?
    - Upgrade Shaw? (Although I reckon he'll be in for the first few games, press-conference dependant)

not sure I like having both zaha and arnie, as it gives you less flexibility than a cheapie would. downgrade one of them (im starting with zaha, and could swap to arnie after GW1 - i think zaha is a safer bet unless he leaves), and upgrade defence.

also would get a different 4.5 like cedric rather than daniels. BOU just signed a LB

nah but good team. may want to get some form of MCI defence for their awesome run GW2-whenever, depending on who looks nailed, but other than that good. not sure about 2x7.0 strikers is the only thing. doesn't allow much flexibility as you have funds tied up there

Quaner or Kamara for cheapie 3rd striker? Why?

    1. Andy_Social
      • 13 Years
      8 years, 10 hours ago

I think Kamara will lose his place to Schurrle, so there are no 4.5 ones who'll get more than a 1 sub point. 5m minimum for a possibly-playing striker.
