Joshua King (£6.5m) scored his first goal of pre-season on Friday ahead of a campaign that could see him return to his best.

He was a revelation in 2016/17 when, classified as a midfielder, he registered 16 goals, three assists and 178 points while operating as Bournemouth’s centre-forward.

His follow up to that was disappointing by comparison. Shifted to a forward on Fantasy Premier League, the Norwegian international scored half-as many goals, provided three assists and amassed a total score of just 110 points.

However, some underlying data from the second-half of the season suggest an improvement in his fortunes in 2018/19.

CHERRY ON TOP

We may have recently revealed the goal threat of Ryan Fraser (£5.5m) and the injured Junior Stanislas (£6.0m), but it does appear that King was unlucky not to score more often in 2017/18. No Bournemouth player registered more touches in the box than King (140) and none of his team-mates had more shots there either (1.2 per game). His 21 shots on target was also a club-high, while only Fraser (16.7) had a better goal conversion rate than him (15.7). Furthermore, King scored more big chances than anyone else at the club (six), even though Callum Wilson (£6.0m) was presented with more of them. Last time around King was still the joint-top scorer with eight goals, but he could easily improve on that in the upcoming season.

CREATIVE STREAK

While the cheaper Wilson matched King’s goal tally in 2017/18, where the Norwegian has the advantage over his colleague was creativity, which could well justify spending an extra £0.5m on him this season. King created 38 chances last term, which ranked second among the Cherries, behind only Fraser and, crucially, double that of Wilson. It is no surprise then that King registered twice as many assists as his English colleague, with just Andrew Surman (£5.0m) and Jordon Ibe (£5.5m) putting up more.

END OF SEASON FORM

King did not start 2017/18 particularly well but was one of the many players who performed much bette in the second-half of the campaign. Between Gameweek 1 and 19, King was involved in just 23 percent of Bournemouth’s goals. From Gameweek 20 until the end of the season, he was involved 50 percent of the time. Considering the Cherries’ appealing early fixtures, especially at home, King could establish himself as an important figure in the opening 10 fixtures. A trip to Chelsea in Gameweek 4 looks the hardest, although the Cherries were still 3-0 winners there last time, while Cardiff, Everton, Leicester, Crystal Palace and Southampton will all visit the Vitality Stadium in the early months.

SELECTION ADVANTAGE

King could start the 2018/19 campaign as the first-choice centre-forward at Bournemouth, although it’s early days yet. So far, King has been involved in all three of the Cherries’ pre-season matches, featuring from the beginning on two occasions. Meanwhile Jermain Defoe (£6.0m) has two starts, three appearances and a goal too, but Wilson has featured just once. Furthermore, King racked up more starts that any other Bournemouth forward in 2017/18 (27).

Good players. Not too sure about Schurrle and Southampton's defence.
Azpi seems expensive at the moment.
ID rather have a defender over a man city keeper.
I dig the Keita pick, he is quality.

He’s a great player, playing in a much better team, much better service, and he’s more clinical in front of goal than Sané/Sterling.

              They are my reasons 🙂

Mahrez will not just play as an orthodox right winger but he also played in David Silva's 'free 8' role against Liverpool. That sort of flexibility means he is more likely to start than the likes of Sterling/Sané who are a little more restricted, David Silva is seeing a smaller role this year and KdB is still resting after the World Cup. All eyes on Mahrez.

I don't really get where all the money has gone. Coleman, Firmino and Mahrez I guess. And why Townsend? I am not a fan of Townsend.

With that bench I Expect Salah, Auba and Kun.

      1. Teror
        • 11 Years
        8 years, 14 hours ago

You can't have Salah, Auba and Kun and have a defence as solid as mine.

As for Townsend, when I look at budget strikers it's highly unlikely that any of them are going to get you as many points as Townsend, so I figured I'm better off cheaping out in midfield. He's got a decent run of opening fixtures, he's a safer bet than the newly promoted teams whose players are unproven, will be playing in an advanced position with Benteke out and in a few weeks he'll probably be out for whichever budget midfielder emerges.

If Lucas continues showing good preseason form might B be better option? Can see him getting extended run in side with Son away and looking sharper than Lamela. Presently on A

    A Eriksen plus 4.5 m forward

    B Lucas Moura plus King

What do you think of my team?
    Patricio
    Mendy-Robbo-PvA
    Salah-Siggy-Jota-Jorginho
    Auba-Aguero-Arnautovic

    Bench: Speroni, Cedric, Gunnarson, Peltier
I really want to find additional 1.0 so i could swap Patricio with Ederson. Any thoughts? Thanks.

    So A or B....?!!

    A) 3-5-2
    Ederson
    Bellerin - Shaw - Robertson
    Salah - Mahrez - Jota - Mkhi - Costa
    Aubs - Firmino

    B) 3-4-3
    Pickford (if goes to Chelsea)
    Mendy - Shaw - Robertson
    Salah - Mahrez - Mkhi - Costa
    Aubs - Firmino - Arnie

    Cheers guys!

Read a great article by FPLAcademica in twitter where he goes through optimisation. If you can find it it’s worth a read. Anyway this is the team he’s going with:

    Fab
    Alonso Davies Ota Robertson
    Eriksen Salah Gross
    Firm Zaha Arnie
    Subs: Speroni, Neves, Stephens,Malone

    Thoughts?

I’d probably say the same until I read the article then it all becomes clearer. I’m personally sold on it just changed out Firm for Auba by changing one of the defence

It's an intriguing read. I'd be interested to monitor his progress if he goes with that squad and reports on it weekly. He doesn't induce me to make any changes to my draft though. Much of what he says I already agree with and have factored in, but I'm not going to change my mind about avoiding Alonso and being wary of Spurs early doors, not to mention to Zaha-want-away issue.

    Current team:

    Ederson
    Mendy Robertson Coleman (Cedric) (Wan-Bissaka)
    Salah Sanchez Richarlison (Deulofeu) (Cairney)
    Tosun Zaha Firmino

Worth ditching Tosun Deulofeu and Cairney to swap to a 3-5-2 with Mahrez and two 4.5m benchfodders?

This is Josh King's overall goal scoring record: 43 goals in 214 appearances
This is his record for Bournemouth: 32 goals in 105 apperances

For Bournemouth he is a 1 goal in 3.3 games player. So in a 38 game season he scores about 11 goals if he plays every game.

Personally I won't be going for him as I think he is not going to improve (he is 26, not some youngster), picks up niggly injuries (so doesn't play a full season) and was lucky to go on a hot-streak in the second half of the 2016/17 season which boosts his stats.

could go on a hot streak at the start given those fixtures. think you're correct in suggesting he's probably not a longer term option.

If they play 4-3-3 the ones who are nailed on are kante, Jorginho and hazard that leaves a rw and a cm up for grabs
