Joshua King (£6.5m) scored his first goal of pre-season on Friday ahead of a campaign that could see him return to his best.

He was a revelation in 2016/17 when, classified as a midfielder, he registered 16 goals, three assists and 178 points while operating as Bournemouth’s centre-forward.

His follow up to that was disappointing by comparison. Shifted to a forward on Fantasy Premier League, the Norwegian international scored half-as many goals, provided three assists and amassed a total score of just 110 points.

However, some underlying data from the second-half of the season suggest an improvement in his fortunes in 2018/19.

CHERRY ON TOP

We may have recently revealed the goal threat of Ryan Fraser (£5.5m) and the injured Junior Stanislas (£6.0m), but it does appear that King was unlucky not to score more often in 2017/18. No Bournemouth player registered more touches in the box than King (140) and none of his team-mates had more shots there either (1.2 per game). His 21 shots on target was also a club-high, while only Fraser (16.7) had a better goal conversion rate than him (15.7). Furthermore, King scored more big chances than anyone else at the club (six), even though Callum Wilson (£6.0m) was presented with more of them. Last time around King was still the joint-top scorer with eight goals, but he could easily improve on that in the upcoming season.

CREATIVE STREAK

While the cheaper Wilson matched King’s goal tally in 2017/18, where the Norwegian has the advantage over his colleague was creativity, which could well justify spending an extra £0.5m on him this season. King created 38 chances last term, which ranked second among the Cherries, behind only Fraser and, crucially, double that of Wilson. It is no surprise then that King registered twice as many assists as his English colleague, with just Andrew Surman (£5.0m) and Jordon Ibe (£5.5m) putting up more.

END OF SEASON FORM

King did not start 2017/18 particularly well but was one of the many players who performed much bette in the second-half of the campaign. Between Gameweek 1 and 19, King was involved in just 23 percent of Bournemouth’s goals. From Gameweek 20 until the end of the season, he was involved 50 percent of the time. Considering the Cherries’ appealing early fixtures, especially at home, King could establish himself as an important figure in the opening 10 fixtures. A trip to Chelsea in Gameweek 4 looks the hardest, although the Cherries were still 3-0 winners there last time, while Cardiff, Everton, Leicester, Crystal Palace and Southampton will all visit the Vitality Stadium in the early months.

SELECTION ADVANTAGE

King could start the 2018/19 campaign as the first-choice centre-forward at Bournemouth, although it’s early days yet. So far, King has been involved in all three of the Cherries’ pre-season matches, featuring from the beginning on two occasions. Meanwhile Jermain Defoe (£6.0m) has two starts, three appearances and a goal too, but Wilson has featured just once. Furthermore, King racked up more starts that any other Bournemouth forward in 2017/18 (27).

    Fab 4.0
    Robbo Coleman Mee Tomkins AWB
    Salah Mahrez Richarlison Mkhi Stephens
    Aub Aguero Kamara

    4-4-2

    Too light in defence?
Can also do Mkhi > 4.5 and Kamara > Zaha/Arnie

if not purely because then at least you wouldn't have got them if you never checked their pre-season games?

they are all so buyable. entire back 4, pva goals, sakho baps, tomkins budget goals, wan bissaka 4.0! hennessey (currently, apparently his new competition is decent). i'd argue they are as much end of last season as pre-season picks

          Should do.
I already had Zaha so I got rid of Firmino for Arnie and turned Tomkins into VVD and Kabasele into PVA with the funds.
          Much more balanced now.....

arnie's form has been against league 1 and championship sides. even bournemouth, the one good fixture he has, are miles better than the teams he's doing so well against now

similar. a caveat i'd say is arnie is relatively fixture resilient, has done well against top teams in the past. still though, it's a rotten run

I see a few people debating whether Laca is more worth than Auba Because of the 1.5m. As an Arsenal fan, I want to state that Auba is much more quality and is the best player in our offence. I believe that even though Laca may start as 9, Auba will outscore him from the wing. I’m going with Auba 100%

I agree, I think its a good idea to have Sanchez in your midfield if you go no premium strikers, because then its easier to go downgrade Sanchez and upgrade a striker to premium.

Reckon a PVA AWB double up isn't too bad an idea. You can perms play PVA and double up when it seems viable. Easy sell PVA without losing Palace cover (assuming AWB keeps his spot) if you need funds or another premium defender seems necessary.

He could be... but i would rather save 1.5m & get Mkhi, save 1.0m & get Ramsey or spend 1.0m & get Laca... he's just in between them all.

Ozil/Pogba/KDB could be a very consistent midfield to partner Salah though

Foster looks good if he will start - very defensive watford manager
Heaton could be the star of the show if Pope is injured.
Kasper or Pickford if they go to Chelsea will be beyond essential.
Bettelini, Fabianski, Patricio all could be good also.

Either way i think better to go with one GK & a 4.0

Really hope either Chelsea buy a 5.0, or Pope has a long injury (no offence Nick) though as either of those situations instantly solves any GK dilemmas

Ideally I'll have a 5.5 f&f, but if I really need funds elsewhere I'll punt on a 4.5/4 pairing. The points difference between best and average keepers is narrow enough to not care that much.

How likely is Kolasinac to start? Is Monreal not more likely?

The weak point is the defence, Robbo apart. Rest is good.

Lots of talk about auba and even laca as great options, rightly so. I know it will take 3-5 games to see how Emery will line up his squad but I feel like the best value this season could be in the arsenal midfield. Mkhi (7), ramsey (7.5), even dare I say..Ozil at 8.5 all could be fantastic options.

Obviously players are priced based on the previous season. So last year, dele and eriksen were overpriced in my opinion at 9.5 (Eriksen less so, still good value.) This season you see the city mids overpriced, Sterling (11), Sane (9.5). I could see a double up on arsenal midfield starting in gw 3 really paying dividends, maybe even instead of having auba (11) and still captaining salah every week, and even kane when he returns.

I agree. Thankfully Arsenal have 2 stinky opening games for us to sit back and assess.
