Joshua King (£6.5m) scored his first goal of pre-season on Friday ahead of a campaign that could see him return to his best.

He was a revelation in 2016/17 when, classified as a midfielder, he registered 16 goals, three assists and 178 points while operating as Bournemouth’s centre-forward.

His follow up to that was disappointing by comparison. Shifted to a forward on Fantasy Premier League, the Norwegian international scored half-as many goals, provided three assists and amassed a total score of just 110 points.

However, some underlying data from the second-half of the season suggest an improvement in his fortunes in 2018/19.

CHERRY ON TOP

We may have recently revealed the goal threat of Ryan Fraser (£5.5m) and the injured Junior Stanislas (£6.0m), but it does appear that King was unlucky not to score more often in 2017/18. No Bournemouth player registered more touches in the box than King (140) and none of his team-mates had more shots there either (1.2 per game). His 21 shots on target was also a club-high, while only Fraser (16.7) had a better goal conversion rate than him (15.7). Furthermore, King scored more big chances than anyone else at the club (six), even though Callum Wilson (£6.0m) was presented with more of them. Last time around King was still the joint-top scorer with eight goals, but he could easily improve on that in the upcoming season.

CREATIVE STREAK

While the cheaper Wilson matched King’s goal tally in 2017/18, where the Norwegian has the advantage over his colleague was creativity, which could well justify spending an extra £0.5m on him this season. King created 38 chances last term, which ranked second among the Cherries, behind only Fraser and, crucially, double that of Wilson. It is no surprise then that King registered twice as many assists as his English colleague, with just Andrew Surman (£5.0m) and Jordon Ibe (£5.5m) putting up more.

END OF SEASON FORM

King did not start 2017/18 particularly well but was one of the many players who performed much bette in the second-half of the campaign. Between Gameweek 1 and 19, King was involved in just 23 percent of Bournemouth’s goals. From Gameweek 20 until the end of the season, he was involved 50 percent of the time. Considering the Cherries’ appealing early fixtures, especially at home, King could establish himself as an important figure in the opening 10 fixtures. A trip to Chelsea in Gameweek 4 looks the hardest, although the Cherries were still 3-0 winners there last time, while Cardiff, Everton, Leicester, Crystal Palace and Southampton will all visit the Vitality Stadium in the early months.

SELECTION ADVANTAGE

King could start the 2018/19 campaign as the first-choice centre-forward at Bournemouth, although it’s early days yet. So far, King has been involved in all three of the Cherries’ pre-season matches, featuring from the beginning on two occasions. Meanwhile Jermain Defoe (£6.0m) has two starts, three appearances and a goal too, but Wilson has featured just once. Furthermore, King racked up more starts that any other Bournemouth forward in 2017/18 (27).

Yea Lukaku is overpriced. Salah is priced about right. If there is another good captain option (Hazard most likely) dropping him could be viable.

i would not go double arsenal from the start with the tricky first two games they have, also i would want a second captain option as well as salah (but i guess you see lacca as a captain option). also i think a 7 mil striker is too much to bench

Whilst a wee boost to start of your campaign would be nice, there's too much uncertainty to BB GW1. You can't be 100% that Zaha, Laca, Rich, Ramsey, Shaw, Cedric and AWB will start their games.

if you BB on a double game week you get 16 free point if all your players do nothing, i would also ways try and save BB and TC for doubles its a lot safer

in principle i agree, however, when it gets to most double gameweeks there is huge rotation and it can be difficult to get 15 starters in the team

  15. stat
    8 years, 11 hours ago

I think 3 x 7m strikers to start the season could be a viable strategy.

Zaha (provided he stays) and Arnie have looked good in pre-season - sure, Arnie's fixtures are a mixed bag but West Ham shouldn't struggle to score goals especially with Pellegrini and the attacking reinforcements brought in.

Tosun has yet to impress but the fixtures are very promising, and if a new LB comes in then it's probably a toss-up between him and Siggy for penalties. Tosun's penalty record is amazing - 25 scored, 1 missed, while Siggy's is pretty good too - 24 scored, 3 missed. Also with Richarlison missing tap-ins Tosun should be there to score the rebounds.

Of course this means going without premium options for a few weeks, but Firmino isn't certain to start in GW 1, Auba + Laca's first two fixtures are daunting, and Aguero's minutes are under threat from Jesus. If you have Salah then you're not going to look anywhere else for captaincy, so that makes having captainable players less important.

    1. Chrisirwin01
      • 9 Years
      8 years, 11 hours ago

Massively agree with the captaincy of Salah and the 3x 7mil strikers are completely viable. I've personally opted for Tosun, Augero and Arnie simply because Augero's ceiling is potentially too high and I'm willing to risk that. But £4mil of spare funds is very tempting 🙂

        8 years, 11 hours ago

Not sure about 3 but 2 for sure is a good option. I think Ill go without a premium striker for the start of the season.

      1. stat
        8 years, 11 hours ago

I feel like a 3rd 7m striker is better value than a 7.5m mid (unless Siggy is on pens).
Don't think 4 at the back is viable yet either with all the uncertainty regarding premium defenders.

Im still at 5 atb but seems to be in the minority 🙂 Its not that hard to get a decent bench of starters to hedge against the full back rotation imo, especially with the viability of going without a premium forward.

              I'm a 5-at-the-back too.

Currently Robbo, VVD, Mendy, Shaw and Bellerin.

              1. stat
                8 years, 11 hours ago

Robbo and VVD I can understand, but I can't see Mendy starting week in week out considering that he's coming back from a big injury and that he got injured in the summer again. Shaw is a transfer out waiting to happen, and Emery has always tended to rotate his full backs.

I think full backs who are mostly nailed but a rotation risk are extremely unlikely to get subbed on. They will either play from the start or stay on the bench. Subs are normally used for attacking players and midfielders, which all the top teams have too many of. I dont really see Davies getting subbed on when they have Moura/Lamela/Sissoko/Llorente + youngsters who are starved for minutes. Same for TAA, Mendy.

Right now its Mendy, Bailly, Robertson, TAA, Davies. Its tempting to drop Mendy for PVA for more nailedness.

              1. stat
                8 years, 11 hours ago

I'd drop Mendy for PvA as you said, but even so that's 3 transfers potentially waiting to happen.
Klopp has said that he's going to rotate TAA and Clyne, Rose is a risk to Davies once he's back, and I don't think anybody has any idea of who Mourinho's preferred CBs are, not even the man himself.

I dont think they are transfers waiting to happen. Both TAA and Davies are number one choice. Id guess they both play 3/4 games on average. When I have a decent bench I can handle the rotation. They both offer excellent value. Bailly is temporary, but hes the only non-long term player in my squad right now so I think its fine.

                  1. stat

Klopp on who will play between TAA and Clyne: "They will both play. Whoever is in the best shape before the match will play that game"

I'm on the side of the template-busters. 3 cheap starting strikers, or even better 2 cheap starting strikers allows a strong defence and massive midfield. I'd say that's where the best value is to be found providing perma-captain Salah is on fire.

Ditch Alison for a Liverpool defender. More than likely Shaw will be dropped after a few weeks. Mkhi not quite nailed on, would swap for Ramsey. Jesus not a popular choice.

Jesus and possibly Firmino not likely to play first game

    Ederson,
    Bailly, Kolasinac, Tomkins
Salah, Mane, De Bruyne, Pogba, Ozil
    Zaha, Arnautovic

    4.0 - WanB, Malone, 4.5

Not my team but I think it looks rather spicy.

What's the total value of all 5 players in your defence?

Mine is 25.5m and just want to gauge if that's too high. Thanks

5 players? So what a GK and 4defs?

      My starting 5 prob 26.5

That’s probably fairly normal. A 6, 5.5, 2x4.5 and a 4 is quite typical so maybe 25.5 is a million over the odds for three at the back.

26 here. I always back defenders to accumulate points!

Cedric, Bailly, Robertson, Coleman and Tomkins here. All reasonably nailed on.

27 here - probably too much, but I like the look of my team - playing 4-3-3

All advice would be greatly appreciated:
Lovren & Christensen will be exchanged for rival of same price in their team if don't look likely to start game week 1.
Within a few game weeks if needed- Mata to Lingard. Sanchez to De bruyne and Aguero to Lukaku.

    Ederson
    Lovren - Christensen - Shaw - Tomkins
    Mahrez - Salah - Sanchez - Mata
    Aguero - Zaha

    1 million to spend
    Thanks

    Aubameyang or Lacazette?

Divided opinion amongst everyone. Go with who you think will accumulate points.

Or... neither, watch them for opening 2 games then bring in your preference for GW3.

Lacazette should be a great differential if there isn't much between them.
